3 possibilities

1. Drivers might need some updating or re-installation : Go to the device manager, then right click on the network adapter, then uninstall , check the box that says "uninstall the driver software for this device" now click uninstall...

>go to the manufacturers site >under support, type in the system model, you should see a list of drivers for your system
> download and install.... Did it work?

2. The hardware might be gone : Although the Wi-Fi might look like it's showing and is expected to work fine, but in fact the hardware might be gone. If after installing the drivers software, you still experience the same issue, then the Wi-Fi adapter will need replacement.

Alternatively, you can get a USB - Wi-Fi Adapter which will work just fine.... Except you'll loose one USB port (depends on what's more important)
