the op is not spot on if he could only refer to one single feature of a 4k tv .
maybe he is the nigerian being referred to, a lazy bum who cannot be bothered to do any research into what his tv can actually do.

the only potential issue with 4k tvs is that most of them run propietary oses and not android. last i checked, only sony does android tvs. and those sony tvs cost an arm and a leg

I asked a question but you didn't answer it, how many Nigerians use their smartphones completely or even to a 70% level? Recently I changed my phones theme and it's wallpaper changed, a pal said "Your phone looks pretty different, what did you do"? Yes, he uses a smartphone.

4K UHD TVs are the best display TVs in the market but it's not for the Nigerian market! What am I even saying ? It's not even for the African market ! But we see this TVs in the showrooms and eventually in the homes of people, even some government office connect their CCTV cameras to 4K TVs so the security men can see what's really happening around the building. Funny, they just buy it without understanding the concept behind it. This post is for enlightenment purpose because people are fund of buying electronic gadgets without doing little research or at least seek the advice of an expert. They rather rely on the advice of salesmen/saleswomen who are just there for one reason, make profit ! It is a good thing to embrace new and better technology, but there’s a difference between embracing new technology and just wasting money. In this post I’m going to explain exactly why Nigerians are wasting money on one of such technologies.

THE 4K ULTRA HIGH DEFINITION TV.

First of all, what is 4K ?

It's not a fancy name, 4K is actually a resolution (2160 X 3840). The highest video display resolution right now! To enjoy the power of true 4K UHD technology, you must have a high video resolution of 2160 X 3840 pixels to match with the 4K UHD TV, that's when you can say you're watching 4K TV. This display is a lot better than the usual HD and full HD displays and produces super-rich quality, life-like displays.

Sorry to say this but a lot of Nigerians don’t understand how resolutions work. A lot of people who buy 4k UHD TVs have never watched 4k videos before. THE MAJOR PROBLEM IS, there are few 4K contents available. A 5 minute 4k video is about 2GB in size how much more a full movie of almost 2 hours. A lot of TV shows, movies and TV networks are not even available in 4K resolution ! Not even MTV, CNN, BEIN SPORTS, SUPER SPORTS, FOX NEWS, AFRICAN MAGIC, SOUNDCITY, NAT GEO WILD etc displays 4K UHD videos. They only display in HD. So what’s the point of splashing huge amount of cash on 4K UHD TV only to go home and watch the regular videos or cable TV channels. You’re not different from the guy who bought a much cheaper FULL HD TV because its same video resolutions and you can hardly notice the difference. Agreed it does upscale the video quality to some extent but it's still not 4K. TV stations around the world are not ready to embrace the 4K UHD technology yet! Unless you ready to stream 4K videos directly from NETFLIX or AMAZON PRIME at mind blowing data rates, you can hardly enjoy the 4K experience. Even if you have the cash to burn, which internet service provider in Nigeria can give you enough bandwidth to stream 4k movies non-stop on Netflix at 2160 X 3840 pixels everyday ? This is a secret no TV sales man will ever tell you. Buying such TV in Nigeria is like buying a Ferrari and driving it in a street full of potholes. You can hardly enjoy it !

Do you think Nigeria will be ready for the 4K TV technology in the next 5-10 years ? Tell us in the comment section

The OP made a lot of sense. I happen to own an Ultra HD TV and disappointingly, I rarely enjoy the 4K content it offers because such are very limited and also expensive. An average 4K Blu ray DVD costs about 70 Dollar and it's not even available in Nigeria, not to talk of the fact that in addition to owing this special TV, you also need a 4K DVD player in order to play a 4K video. You have to order 4K DVDs from Amazon and the like.

For now, having a 4K TV is a share waste of money in Nigeria. A Full HD TV would just do.

op you might be wrong....but we have a lot of 4k contents now.....in CDs and video games.....so while you might argue that some don't understand 4k....your argument that Nigeria is not ready for 4k is flawed
Last I checked the memory capacity of a compact disk (CD) is 737mb, so how exactly does a 2 hours movie on 4k which could take about 220GB or 2GB per min fit inside a compact disk, the way you guys talk eh, sometimes I wonder the people behind this monikers.

You got it wrong, the TV manufacturers are not waiting for Nigeria to upgrade to 4K. In a short while DSTV & Others will be forced to deliver 4k content.

Tv of 8 million , the selling point is not only the 4k resolution. it must be a smart TV with customized inbuilt content. the screen size. ability to share content with other devices using screen mirror/screen cast /pc sharing /chromcast. the processor. one remote control solution for all ur device. one connect box to reduce wire at the back of ur tv. clean back solution. invisible connection.
the currency conversation rate is another major factor that increase the price

your argument is invalid because it shoehorns all nigerians [yourself included] into the box of tech illiterates.
i may as well ask i the author of the article uses the internet to a 30% level, since he could not be bothered to do a simple search on the actual features of 4k tvs

i have found that it is more a case of interest than anything else. i know enough 'tech illiterates' that can find their way around cars 45 and vehicle auction websites. the same way plenty of nigerians understand the use of whatsapp and other messaging apps.

Nice one
Information is life.
This mindset of waste and redundancy is traceable to numerous gadgets described as telephones that many people run around for without utilizing up to 30% of the functions correctly....

An average Nigerian won't be discussing tech back and forth like we have been doing. Am average Nigerian use his gadget a bland way. Buy a smartphone install social media and game apps and flex on.
Buy a tv, plug his dstv to it and flex on.

My point is, an average Nigerian wants to use the current tech or show off but not because of its functionalities.

An HD content on a Full HD TV can never be the same with an HD content on a 4K UD TV. That upscaling ability of 4K TV is enough to increase your TV budget. There is no crime in getting that extra quality. Even those in the advanced countries use 4K TVs to watch HD/SD contents.

What I think we should be discussing is why all Nigerian channels have refused to upgrade from SD. There are over 15 HD channels on DSTV (the MNETS, Supersport, Etc.) and I believe that with time, some upgrades would be made on a few channels.

Note to get those 15+ HD Channels, you have to cough out around 12k for monthly subscription. I believe those paying heavily for these TVs can afford the subscriptions and data.

hopefully it doesn't take long for dstv to upgrade to 4k,but for now Netflix and youtube offer 4k content and most 4k TVs come with Netflix and youtube preinstalled.watched the last of us 2 e3 gameplay demo on my phone at 720p and on a 4k TV and the amount of extra detail was amazing.people with Xbox one x,ps4 pro and PCs with gtx 1070 and above will also be able to take advantage of it so 4k isn't a waste of money

And 4K on Xbox One X really looks good... And it supports HDR.

If I may ask, today there are cameras with ultra HD lens and over 64mmega pixel, how does this compare to the 4k resolution TV. Many modern digital IP CCTV cameras are far in 10mpixel resolution with super clarity that you really need an HDMI and and ultra HD screen to get the beauty of their clarity. How does this also compared to this 4k TV?
Tnx
