I don't know anything about dyslexia until now but I will make research on it... concerning helping him believe me we have a been trying our best since when he was even younger but it just seems like a fruitless effort though we didn't stop but it kind of frustrating

I am guessing that in a place like Nigeria, it is not common to find help for children who may have such issues, so you may have your work cut out for you. I suggest you start by taking him to see a psychiatrist, to get an idea of what possible problems he may be dealing with. There are only videos on how to help children with learning difficulties.
If it turns out he has a learning disability, which I highly suspect, you will need to find teachers who understand and are able to tailor his learning to his needs, and you will like it. Also best if the entire family is also educated on his needs, so you contribute to his learning in every way.
Just so you know, there is no CURE for learning disabilities. However, by finding out how he learns best, and tailoring his learning to that, you ensure that he is able to live a near normal life.

Aw...might not be his fault though

Re: HELP! My Brother Is Too Dull by Nobody: 10:08pm On May 29, 2020
Is he mentally challenged? Like is he autistic or has down syndrome? Though autistic people are sometimes brilliant cos Ive seen one or two in my former school. Only their social life is dull as they are alway s withdrawn.

If he's not any of the above, then he may be suffering from dyslexia like many have pointed out here. And if that is the case, you may need to enroll him in a special school where people with such disability are managed. Also try to find out what his interests are and engage him in it to help exercise his mental ability/skills.

Hi good day my fellow Nairalander please I will really need your experience about this issue. Please help me read to the end as it is a little bit long.

My junior brother is 14 years old and to be sincere I haven’t seen anybody as dull as him. I don’t know if it is natural but I just can’t understand why someone at that age could still be struggling with very simple arithmetic. My brother can’t write 1 – 150 correctly at 14.

He seems too dull; note he attends one of the best private school around our area, though I know you might say maybe education is not his way but even if you want to drop out from school you should know some basic things like money, time, multiplication and so on but my brother doesn’t know anything I must say, even to write his name correctly is a problem. It is making everyone unhappy lot of money is being spent on lesson teachers and other things for him still no improvement.

I am a student of one of the top federal University in Nigeria same as my other siblings even at both secondary and undergraduate level we were always above average so I can’t say his problem is genetic. I really wants to know what is the problem with him nairalanders. After I finished secondary school I once taught some pupils in primary school though there were dull ones too there but with time I could see improvement unlike my brother i always try to teach him from time to time but it kind of frustrating as he doesn’t even seems like he will ever grab anything and he doesn’t behave like he wants to learn anything.

He makes it seems as if he is not interested book or arithmetic at all …we all tried talking to him endless time to always read any time he his less busy but he never does except he is being forced.

He rarely talks, he loves to keep to himself always, he doesn’t have interest in anything unlike we the others that are die hard football fans, most times my mom will tell him to even go out to play and mingle he will not still want to go, he prefer to stay at home seating all day without reading or doing anything, even if it is to draw or play football he wont.

This matter is not making everyone happy at home we don’t even know the solution to his problem again, as in imagine having a child that is 14 years old that doesn’t know the difference between 17 and 71 it is just so bad…..

We don’t know if his case is mental or spiritual. please nairalanders I know there are child experts in the house or anybody who have experienced something like this before what do you think is the problem and possible solutions to the problem your contributions are welcome.

Please help me push this pleaseeeeee

Your brother is dyslexic. There is a different method of teaching people with dyslexia. He is not dull

All you need to do is to keep praying for him and by the grace of God, his life will receive total transformation in Jesus name. Amen.

Very very clear your brother is in the autistic spectrum and may also have a learning disability, maybe dyslexia

It's not the poor boy's fault that his brain is wired to see 17 and think it's 71,not his fault that reading appears so overwhelming..the alphabets musy appear scrambled to him & his brain can't cope.

Think about it,do you think he would choose not to know the difference between 17&71 by choice?

If someone gives you a book and places it upside down, would you be able to read it?

The poor boy must have been struggling for so long, his self esteem must be in tatters.

You and your family should see a paediatrician or a child psychiatrist or psychologist for a diagnosis then hopefully point you to a specialist that manages kids with learning disabilities

You all must be frustrated and i empathise but think of how much your brother is suffering.

Seems like you watched "Like Stars on Earth", didn't you?

Sounds like autism

Not his fault.
Easily could have been you.

Did you read what he wrote? If the guy had autism he'd be brilliant as phuck but dull socially.

I don't have anyone to teach me ABC or D, but thank God for the gift of life. I can read and write, I even went to Arabic school for some time, our cleric was so eager to call me back when he found out that I don't frequently attend modrasat. I had a friend like that, it makes one to have low self esteem. Scold, teach and pray for him.

I don't think so. Behaviorally he MAY be on the spectrum but that alone does not account for his stunted academic growth.
Keep typing rubbish there u hear.
Your description of him suggests that he is autistic.
The earlier you help him the better.

Good public schools are far better than most private schools, though.

Go to the closest FMC in your town. Book an appointment at general consultation. Ask to see a clinical psychologist or consultant psychiatrist. You will come and thank me later.

It's a lie. That's a myth. Autistic people are not as bright as Hollywood has made us believe.

I think you have to discover him. His mode of learning and interest. He might attend the best school does not mean they are delivering knowledge to him the way he understands. He definitely has his way of grasping knowledge which you yet to discover.

And trust me, you will be amazed when you find out.

Make sure you return to share a testimony when you do.

Choose a sport or let him choose a sport to pick an interest in, or see if he has interest in Music. There is no such thing as a dull child, it's ur job as parents to discover the talent.

Not every one will be a Doctor or Engineer as most parents seem to want. There is a hidden talent in that child discover it. Don't judge him cis he don't know maths or English.

Find out wat he is interested in, buy a musical instrument or a sports item. Just do something but don't call him dull at all.

God doesn't waste.
