We are strongly working on increasing the population of these birds. Long term investors are invited to partake in our project.

To see appreciable returns on Investment, the least we can do would be the 5000birds I earlier mentioned.

We are currently trying to acquire some acres of land to expand our project.

But what without funding, how do we grow, ?. 5000 birds will cost us in excess of 4Million naira.

Hi Basking, you are really doing well and I must say am proud of you. You did not just establish a business but you went ahead sharing your success story to we Nairalaners you are a worthy ambassador to this noble course. I however would like to be reading more of the challenges, you face while raising your birds to minimize mortality as well as what was done to curtail it, with this we upcoming business minded people would guide against it. Am happy dat in 10 weeks from now the 1st set would start yielding their purpose of investment. When are you especting to push the broilers to market? (As in what's d full matured size and weeks for christmas-like fowls. Once again welldone. May God continue to bless you. Cheers

This is a commendable effort but there are some errors which others who may start theirs need to  address, which can cause chicken losses. Poultry farming is sensitive and the errors should be kept to the barest minimum.

Some of the errors that i have observed while reading the posts on this blog are as follows:

1) The outer view of the Chicken pen has a construction error. The roof is supposed to have an overhang of at least 50 cm on all sides (front and sides). The purpose of the overhang is to prevent rainwater and excess sun rays entering the chicken pen.

2) In one picture, the steel feeders were laid on the floor. They are supposed to be hung from the roof and to level with the back of the standing birds. By lying them on the floor, the chickens will easily soil the feed in the feeders by walking in it and defecating in it.Their droppings contain ammonia which is a health hazard which can cause serious infections. It is much safer and wiser to suspend the steel feeders from the roof with wire.

3) I observed that charcoal heat was used to provide heat for the chickens in the brooding stage.Charcoal may be the cheapest but it is not recommended for heating in the brooding stage because it can not provide steady and uniform heat which the chickens require at the brooding stage
i also observed that the charcoal pots were not covered with wire netting to protect the chickens from getting too close to the heating pots and getting burnt to death.

4) In another picture, i observed that the minimum space requirements for day old birds was not observed. There were too many little chickens in the brooders house in the picture and i observed that many of the little chickens would not have easy access to the plastic drinkers which risk is exposing some of the chickens to dehydration and death from thirst.

5) In another picture where there were day old chicks, there were papers laid on the floor which was a right step as it will enable the chickens identify their feed. However i observed that the was no wood shavings under the papers.Wood shavings should have been spread under the papers to provide a bedding and better comfort for the birds.

6) The litter was too thinly spread on the floor in one of the photos. The normal thickness/depth should be 4-6 inches, to be able to absorb the moisture from the chicken droppings and for easier evacuation of the droppings.

When setting up your own  poultry farm, take steps to ensure that the errors highlighted are avoided to avoid avoidable chicken losses, infections and outbreak of diseases. For details of more errors to avoid in poultry farming, you may check www.johnayodele. for free details

I am back again and with good news.

latest update is that my chickens are 13weeks and in less than a month, we should have our 1st crate of eggs. I am however delaying it to ensure they are very well ready to start laying the golden eggs.

We have started putting crates together to accommodate the eggs. buyers for the eggs cant wait for the chickens to start laying. In-fact one of my customers has offered to pay in advance.

My only challenge remains the feeding. This chickens are really eating the thing and that brings me the the decision of starting a feed-mill to both feed them and also sell to the public.

I hope I will get your patronages when our branded Feeds hit the market. I will keep you posted when the names come out from CAC.

Lets keep this post alive!.

I really cant wait to start posting pictures of EGGS instead of HENS grin

wont there be an oversupply if you speed up the process so to speak of the new 500

I think its okay to just allow them grow at the duration,

then again I don't know where or who you are supplying to, You should start selling the current eggs before you over invest

Hi,
i have enjoyed the posts and comments, quite nice. I started just like this 3 years ago and really was fun, then the reality of business hit me. all the fun was gone and am lookin for a way out.
Thanks God am still here and am still in the poultry business.
@Basking, pls do not get ur hopes too high, take it easy, the eggs will surely come but in tricles for some time say a month. Just hold ur head high, u have done well.
If u can spare the cash, I will advice u think of Battery cages. I started with battery cages and switched to deep litter and now back to battery cages.
the yield withe the BC is quite high at a piont I was making 90% laying rate. on Deep litter, I never made 60%.

For the newbees that wanna go into poultry, I have developed some excel sheets to help u. I will past in on line FREE OF CHARGE.

WATCHOUT.

Gentlemen and ladies of the blog, I want to thank everyone for their pieces and chunks of advice. We will act accordingly. We have recently procured some acres of land in ogun state for the same business and WIP.

We have procured the best breed of broilers in the country, reason we strongly believe they should be ready for xmas sale. We have also gotten special feed rations to ensure growth is achieved. For the layers, it is normal for us to be expectant as its a longer term investment that has gulped millions. So the earlier they start laying the beta for us oo.

When the broilers are 4weeks I will post them here.

Again for the cages, we are currently talking to our suppliers abroad to ship them in. God on our side, roi will be good.

Infact if you need cages, I will sell to you both used and new ones. With these, I hope I have been able to allay your fears for our farm.
