@biddybee, the initial eggs will be peewee eggs, sometimes very small, it will take a few weeks say 2-3 to even out. you will need to change ur feed to layer mash as soon as 5-10% of the birds are laying. best regards 4 Likes |

Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by davidzfarm(m): 3:26pm On Mar 08, 2012 |
@ ILEANAJU: well you did not state the locatn of your farm but one major problem with broilers in this season is heat stress, i recommend you feed your birds early in the morning by providing artificial light make sure that the feeders are empty during the hottest hour of the day and provide feeds for them again in the evening. you could equally check their droppings for sign of diseases. |

This is really interesting. Its nice that this thread made a front page. I observed some pertinent issues about poultry production are being raised, some have been addresed, while many have been unattended to. Kudos to the experienced/experts who have been solution providers here. However, i'll love to be part of this discussion. I presently work with one of the biggest operators in the poultry industry in Nigeria where I'd been involved in training people on Poultry/Catfish Production and management. Apart from this, our company is involved in sales of feeds, drugs, vaccines, inputs and laboratory services with business presence across Nigeria. Should you require any help/information or got questions, pls visit www.animalcare-ng.com or write info@animalcare-ng.com you can also write me on ooparinde@animalcare-ng.com Poultry farming is for the wise, hence apply wisdom. best wishes 1 Like |

Hi Hindsight. That is a beautiful venture you executing. Please knowing you are in Kaduna too, am equally there, and doing same. Have been in Poultry business for the pass 26 years, yes since 1986 Started with just what you are doing, then expanded to FEED compounding, not just for my farm but for commercial too. Sorry could not read all the postings, so I dont know if you have talked of your feed for the Broilers and the Layers.I can give you a break down of the cost of feed for the Broilers and Layers. A guaranteed feed that will give you the desired result of (1) maturing you Broilers @ 8weeks with an average weight of 1.5Kg (dressed) (2) For your layers (things being equal - healthy layers) to get an average of 70-80% laying. Layers Chick-Mash (1-6wks old)= 18-20% protein, 2800Kcal Energy @ N2000/bag/25kg Growers-Mash (7-16wks old)= 14-15% protein, 24500Kcal Energy @ N1500/bag /25kg Layers-mash (17wk upward)= 16-17.5% protein, 2700Kcal Energy @1800/bag/25kg Broilers Broiler Starter (1-5wks old)= 23-25% protein, 2850Kcal Energy @ N2200/bag/25kg Broiler Finisher (6-upward)= 20-22% protein, 3000Kcal Energy @ N2100/bag /25kg Note: 25kg bag of feed will feed 200 laying birds (125gm per bird) 25kg bag of feed will feed 200 7wks old Broilers (125gm per bird) Having said that, I wish to wet your appetite, think of raising QUAILS. Quail for meat and eggs, they are "Wonder food and Drug" its profitability is 6 times layers or broilers. This is how it goes Quail laying ability is same as Poultry layers, its egg price its almost the-same, but feed consumption is 1/6th of poultry. Poultry layers- 200birds eat 25kg a day, Quails- 50Quails eat 1kg a day which implies for feed of 25Kg. 25x50=1250Quails. Did hear some asking what are Quails? Hmmmm Read it here www.quaileegcure.com The Quail egg is prized as a dietary and healing food. It is recorded that Chinese medical practitioners have used quail eggs for thousands of years to remedy aliments such as rhinitis, asthma, hay fever, spasmodic cough along with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Children eating quail eggs are less likely to suffer from infectious diseases than other children who don’t. In men, quail eggs provide the prostate gland with phosphorus, proteins, and vitamins that can be a powerful stimulant for sexual potency. Women find that the egg improves skin color and strengthens hair. This is why quail eggs are in facial and in hair care products. Quail Eggs are especially useful to children to enhance development, both physical and mental. A child that eats one or two of quail eggs a day has a better memory, a strong nervous system, sharp vision, a better developed and less sick. It’s been found in two sets of classes in Japan, the students that ate one or two Quail eggs a day do better (physically and academically) than the class that didn’t eat Quail eggs. Quail eggs and treats diseases of the heart, liver, kidney, stomach, thyroid, anemia, nervous system. And yet – diabetes, tuberculosis, bronchial asthma, vegetative-vascular dystonia. Quail eggs have olinevoy acids. Olinevoy acids dissolve and display the stones from the kidney, liver and gall bladder. Quail eggs give good results in treating infertility, epilepsy, allergies, and all kinds of eczema and other skin diseases. http://www.authspot.com UUPS SORRY MY TORRY LONG KO? BEAR WITH ME BECAUSE THIS IS WHERE AM LANDING! AM PLANNIG TO RAISE AND REAR QUAILS,SO I URGENTLY WANT TO BUY AN INCUBATOR.THE "FOREIGN" ONES ARE THE BEST (AM NOT BEING UNPATROTIC BUT LOOKING FOR RESULT)FROM OTHERS EXPERIENCES, FOREIGN ONES GIVE EXCELLENT RESULT (90%), LOCAL ONES BEARLY 40% My question is how do I go about it? @poster. Feed formulation isn't that difficult , just get him some materials ( I think I should still have some ) and teach him how to use the "Pearson square". Some feed mills will give him a good formular and he won't even need to go thru all that stress |

REMEMBER: Only Healthy Birds perform http://henhousefarms./2012/03/18/16/ No doubt you have heard the old saying, “health is wealth”. Well it true, especially so if you are in the poultry production business. As we have said already you can prevent a whole lot of sorrow if you adopt the preventative approach to poultry diseases. Hygiene: Hygiene is key and it starts with the proper location and design of the poultry house. You must locate a foot bath at the entrance (never compromise this); Isolate sick birds as soon as possible and bring them to the attention of that local vet we told you to find. Remove dead birds immediately or dispose of them by burying because dead birds spread disease quicker than live birds!... 1 Like |

hi all thanks for the information and advice i really learnt a lot about poultry business because i want to start my own soon,i already bought the land, but my question is that is this type of business okay for me since am living in London and i love to have my own farm in Nigeria any advice welcome may GOD bless you all |
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by igbonla(m): 3:11pm On Apr 01, 2012 |
fasbio: hi all Do not go into poultry or any other livestock farming if you are not on ground in Nigeria, do not attempt it no matter what you are told. Poultry requires daily management during which a lot of "under the table games" are played by those managing it for others; you can and will lose your money within a short time. It is a good and profitable business if you are on ground. |
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by biddybee: 7:52pm On Apr 01, 2012 |
igbonla: I quite agree, though my brother stands in for me because I have a full-time job, I still visit my poultry farm every 2 days just to ensure that everything is ok. This is not due to lack of trust, but his passion for the birds cannot be compared to mine. This birds require extra care and which if not available, you'll run into losses. Proper accounting is necessary too. Good news!!! I've started selling eggs, they are gradually increasing in size. Any tip(s) on how to boost their egg production. Thanks |
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by davidzfarm(m): 1:58pm On Apr 02, 2012 |
@biddybee congrats the eggs have started coming in, boasting the egg size could turn either way 4 you, the first thing you need to do is to increase their feed consumption, you can do this by giving them extra light in the morning, then you add vitamins and electrolytes. however, if they are above 30weeks and have achieved optimum size, you can add NEMOVIT(egg formulae) to their water.goodluck 2 Likes 1 Share |
