Not according to reputable rankings.

https://www.globalfirepower.com/countries-listing-africa.asp

You sure took your time to find this highly misleading list, let's break it down;

- First this list is for total military strength, the topic at hand is about Air strength.

- Even at that the way it is measured is highly misleading, population, road coverage, oil production all factor into the ranking and Ethiopia has no oil, a smaller population and is a mountainous area.

- It makes no mention of tactics at all.

Now let's get to the main point.

- It measures number of aircraft as superior but makes no mention of the types of aircraft available.

- Nigeria has more helicopters and trainer aircraft with trainers making 1/3 of the "military strength".

- The 13 dedicated attack aircraft are the Super Tucano planes that we have bought but are yet to use.

- Ethiopia has less aircraft overall but more fighters which are designed specifically to destroy other aircraft. If we were to have an air superiority battle with Ethiopia Nigeria would lose because most of the air power is focused on fighting ground targets.

- If we are even to take this list seriously Angola would destroy Nigeria in the air.

Thanks to napt2 for educating some of our ignorant and uneducated youths, lecturing and educating them is community service that must be done.

With the level of ignorance troubling our youths, Nigeria is in for a rough time.

Now, I'll highlight the impressive and explosive capabilities of the Super Tucano.

This aircraft load and deploy nearly all the modern and sophisticated munitions and avionics you see in modern jet fighters like the F-16 and the F-35.

Underestimate the Super Tucano at your own peril.

Well it was bought specifically for the war on boko haram, not for conventional war

( Every country must have the ability to fight unconventional war).

Good, but the price is too high, they should buy drones instead that would have served us better with more endurance while they operate it at a safer distance and very cheap. Imagine have drones that could loiter for 2 days in the skill both day and night while waiting for those elements to get out of their holes and strike.

Even here Nigeria is still ahead of Ethiopia.

But let me not stray too far from my original point which was that Nigeria does not need advanced fighter aircraft.

Even the most sophisticated fighter jet has a limited flying range so you only buy fighter jets if :

1. You have nearby powerful and hostile neighbors; or,

2. You have aircraft carriers or a network of bases across the region.

The point is, Nigeria is the air power in our region and those with superior Air Forces on the continent do not have the capacity to deploy them against us effectively. So we buy what we need, which is simply enough power to decimate boko haram.

3 more things by the way:

1) The Tucano was originally made by Embraer of Brazil. However, the US Air Force loaned some Tucanos during their test programme and their officers improved the firepower and avionics of the aircraft. This improved plane is known as the Super Tucano and that's one of the reasons why we needed US permission before the deal could go through (because the improved firepower and avionics are US products).

2) Some people complained about the cost, but that price includes the cost of training Nigerian pilots in the US, providing spare parts for a given number of years and providing equipment at the air base in Kainji (it's not just the cost of the plane).

3) The Nigerian Air Force is also getting JF Thunder fighter jets later this year or early next year. They are being tested in China and Pakistan at the moment. However, I think the Tucanos are more important than the Thunder because they deal with our major problem at the moment.

Pictures below are of the JF Thunder.

This is the most sophisticated fighter jet in the world, the F-35B Lightning II aircraft armed with the Paveway II.

Our Tucano are coming with 200 Paveway II laser guided bombs.

The super Tucano is a mean beast, there's almost nothing the latest jet fighters deploys that the Tucano can not.

What review is there to see than people asking you for prices of your products and you ignoring them?
Macsjebs:
cool Nice one, we hope it delivers, even beyond expectations

...Lagos traffic lately is indeed worrisome and as if that isn't enough stress already, a lady in the car today shocked me when she engaged me in an argument over how I smelled

And I was like, Ma'am pls calm down and give me a minute to explain. It was no small drama as she went on and on, saying, I am a guy and not a lady, I shouldn't 'bath' myself with perfumes

Eventually, I explained to her that less is more with our mind blowing fragrances, It was indeed a happy ending after she got from me for trials and confirmed saying 'never in my over three decade on earth have I used such a potent and astounding fragrance'

This isn't made up and even reviews from Nairalanders on the thread on my signature corroborates it.

Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System

BAE Systems to Supply 9999 Additional APKWS II to Nigeria and Netherlands

BAE Systems is awarded $225 million contract to procure 9,999 additional Lot 7, full-rate production units of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II.

The procurement of the additional APKWS II weapons will upgrade the current 2.75-inch rocket system to a semi-active laser guided precision weapon in support of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and the governments of Nigeria and the Netherlands, the United States Department of Defense said in a statement Wednesday.

Work is expected to be completed in September 2020.

Anyways I have already acknowledged that Nigeria's main priority is fighting ground targets but that doesn't make it "better" especially if you want to compare a head to head fight between two different countries and not stateless insurgents.

Anyhow sha, they must sha defeat this Boko Haram, I'm tired of seeing their faces.

Thanks there is someone that is enlightened too. Nigeria keep buying tainee aircraft and equip it with or configure it for fighter. Ethiopian Airforce Migs will destroy ours even before we know they are there.

I don't want to bring up Egypt, those one will smoke us for breakfast as they operate f-16.

I posted about the weapons and gadgets we are getting with your Tucano and you are here blabbing about politics and partisanship? What's that nonsense got to do with my post?

But here is my point, the said Aircraft was bought for insurgent war like someone said, which is not a problem, but argument here is that if it was for conventional warfare with Mig-29 or F-16, it stands no chance.

Because those have powerful radars compared to Tuc.And can Dec text and struck from a great distance.

Yeah, President Babangida started a programme to build these kind of planes in Nigeria and several were made (they are called the Air Beetle), although they were kit planes.

However, one of the problems with Nigeria is instability. There was the June 12 crisis, Babangida left power, Shonekan came and then Abacha came and we were under sanctions and had an economic crisis.

The programme was not continued due to all these problems.

How come you know all these stuffs, you work in the military?
