Nigeria does not have a Police Force; what we have are hoodlums, bandits, thieves and touts who are armed, uniformed and given the authority to steal! Wonder why?

They are the least funded of the security forces; the FG will not try this with the military ( you know why). They have given them the necessary tools to fend for themselves, a gun and uniforms and more recently a bill which allows them raise funds from bails into a trust account

Don’t be under any illusion that the top officers in the NPF are unaware of the rot! They are fully aware and the police will NEVER change

There's more to this story, let's even assume your number is fake, the highest they would do is to impound your vehicle until you prove that the license plates are original or give them money which is what they are rally after, stripping you and locking you up is so not normal, we all know they are mad but not to this extent. Police also would not two your vehicle when they Caan force you to drive it to their station, you probably skipped some part of the stroy.
"The highest they will do is impound your vehicle on fake number plates?" Are you for real? The implication of fake number plate is that the vehicle is likely stolen. In that case it is a criminal matter. Will you impound a suspected stolen vehicle and release the driver to go and bring evidence the vehicle is not stolen?
I think the story is as streight as it can be. The police knew the loophole with Lagos number plates and used it to extort him simple.
Its just like those days when there is a mistake of just one number or letter on your documents ie engine number and they use it to extort you on the expressway.

First, license plate verification is not within the powers of the police. They are acting ultra vires ( outside legal powers). They are looking for bribe, please do not bribe them. Teach them a bitter lesson. Quickly get a very good lawyer to file a Fundamental Human Rights matter before the high court as well as a motion requesting the court to compel the police to release you on bail.

In the same vein, while the suit is filed, file a complaint to the highest police command in the state (police commissioner) and cc the IGP. Also mention the names and numbers of the policemen involved, if you cannot remember, mention the station and the DPO in charge. Also, in the suit, let the parties be the Nigerian police force, each and every of the policemen involved, if you or your lawyers can get their names, the DPO, the State Commissioner of Police. Your lawyer can do all these for you.

I give you less than a few days they will come and release you by themselves. But still continue with the case. Embarrass them till Abuja starts to query the DPO. He will weigh it and ask whether the 20k he wants to collect is worth all this wahala. Deal with them o, do not beg. I repeat, do not beg.

The sad truth is that the policemen were extortionist and since it appeared on the Lagos State Database (verify.autoreg.ng), they should have backed out.

Unfortunately it is not the duty of the police to identify fake particulars because they don't have that capability, they are expected to provide security in detecting stolen vehicles, criminals in transit etc.

Checking particulars validity ceased to be a duty of The Nigeria Police when VIO was craved out of her in 1967. But this is Nigeria!
Focus on the extortion or brutality you are alleging but definitely not Police duties. It is the duty of the Police to check while finding the author of a crime any irregularities concerning a motorist with criminal intent who may have pasted a fake plate number on a vehicle for disguise, that may have been used to execute a crime or that the vehicle itself was stolen. The person can be investigated if they are not convinced or satisfied and that is why they Police the people and it's property. Every duty of the Police in time past which are now performed by other uniformed organizations, to assist the Police does not automatically removed the functions from the Police, in petroleum they still protect our pipelines from vandals just like the NSCDC, they still protect our border areas just like the Immigrations and Customs, they maintain traffic on the road and attend to accident victims just like the FRSC,they apprehend drug dealers just like the NDLEA , they are there when there is fire outbreak just like the Fire Service, they still Police the Prisons just like the Correctional Service, they also perform international operations just like the Military and also assist the Military in case of external aggression as may be prescribed etc, infact they still perform a lot of duties which are not statutorily removed from them as it is not practicable or viable to be removed, looking at the critical nature of those sectors and input of the Police on those sectors. So the job of the Police is so essential to the existence of any nation including Nigeria even if Nigeria and Nigerians don't seem to recognize that considering their poor salary and pensions compared to the Military and others. Police is in charge of internal security in Nigeria and every other organizations assists and supports the Police for a common goal.

What fits the Police is pick out the offenders one on one until you eliminate all.

Very sad.

All of us blaming the op for being too gentle would have also been the first to blame him for lossing his life arguing with our trigger-happy policemen instead of playing along and later come out to fight.

There are no hard and fast rules in dealing with security agencies in Nigeria. You fight, you withdraw, you shout you smile, you joke you cry, you loss your time or and your money by force or willingly, etc. Whatever happens just ensure you don't loss your life, else fellow downtrodden citizens will blame you.

We need to get the leaders of those given the instruments of coersion to explain how they turn these instruments of protection to those of extortion.

It is sad. This is only one amongst a thousand other extortionist endeavours of our security agencies.

The police do not do this in the north, the government should better implement all endsars demands now or else the next one would consume them and all those looters

That’s true bt maybe not a balanced comparison I’m not exactly sure yet. Crimes in the north are different in the south west and south east. Their major issues are insurgency asides that its mostly Lowkey. The south the types of crimes varies so the policing is different.

U can’t compare the policing in vi with the policing in ajegunle or Mushin. They are different issues. This is what I mean by balancing judgement that said the way the policing is been done is shameful bt that’s not the North’s fault bt governments poor monitoring of police service and feedback. Why do u think in America they use body and car on dashboard cameras? For monitoring and feedback.

Government needs implement a monitoring and feedback mechanism/system that works for us.

On 29/12/2020 in Aba, I was stopped by a group of police men while driving myself and family members on my 2005 honda accord. The police men wore just police camouflage polos with no displayed Identity card, name tag or force number and were carrying AK-47 rifles. I was driving my 2005 honda accord car with Lagos registration number.

Inside the car were my two younger brothers, my younger sister, my wife and my one year old baby. The police men requested for my vehicle papers and driver's license which I handed over to them. They said that my license registration number is fake. They showed me an FRSC web page where they ran my plate number and it displayed "Invalid".

I explained to them that the number was duly registered in Lagos and that the plate number was gotten via legal channels and there is no way it can be fake. They wouldn't hear of that. I demanded that they allow me call who registered the vehicle for me which I did. The agent that registered the vehicle for me is a colleague of mine in the office that has connection with FRSC.

He explained to me that Lagos is the only state that produces their plate number themselves and that sometimes they don't upload it on FRSC database. So, that the number doesn't show on FRSC database doesn't mean that it's fake. He gave me Lagos autoreg verification website(verify.autoreg.ng) to give the policemen to verify the plate number . I personally verified my number on the autoreg website and it showed valid. I tried explaining these to the policemen but they wouldn't hear the explanation.

They collected the car keys from me to drive the car to their station but couldn't start the car after several attempts. They ordered I and my younger brother into their miniature mitsubishi bus and took us to their station. They later took my brother back to the car location and towed the vehicle to their station.

They told me to UnCloth to my boxer shorts and detained me inside their cell(the condition of the cell is story for another day). I was detained for approximately 6hours till my dad came and they collected thirty thousand naira from him before releasing me. The DPO ordered for my release after my father intervened and is most likely aware of the thirty thousand that was paid before I was released.

He(DPO) said my vehicle should not be released till they conclude investigation on the license plate issue. They defrauded 30k from my father to effect my release when I committed no crime. My vehicle was duly registered in Lagos which can be verified on autoreg website. They detained me for no just cause for 6hours in a filthy cell that is not fit for lower animals let alone a human being. They refused to release my vehicle till this moment thereby causing a lot of hardship to my family for someone that visited home for Xmas.

I have resolved to fight the humiliation I am suffering in their hands with everything I have got. I just want to be sure that what my agent told me is the truth. Is a plate showing on autoreg but not on FRSC database fake? How can I prove that my plate number is authentic?
Please gurus should respond.
first of all collect as plenty as possible lagos registered numbers(maybe up to 10 numbers) check those numbers on FRCS website if they have the same problem you can then proceed to other enquiry.

If you wan to go Legal do it asap. They know what they were doing. they could have stop tens of commercial vehicles who will absolutely had expired number plate, but because you are a private owner and will have saving, you are a good target.

Next time asked them to verify from about 10 cars passing by that road.

Secondly I wonder why police brutality is so rampant in the south.Go to North everyone live free and is not afraid of any form of police brutality or extortion.
