Phones / NCC Directs MTN To Scrap 10 Kobo Per Second Plans Effective Midnight by techsuplex: 9:47pm On Jul 13, 2013
We have learned from reliable sources that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed MTN to halt with immediate effect all it’s plans with the 10 kobo per second rates. According to the source, about 8 million of it’s subscribers on the affected plans (MTN iPulse and MTN SuperSaver plus) would be automatically migrated to other plans starting from midnight, 14th of July, 2013 to avoid NCC sanctions.

No clear reason has been put forward for the NCC directive, but my guess is that it has to do with NCC’s designation of both MTN and Globacom Nigeria as “dominant” players and as a result would be closely monitored to ensure that they were not using “anti-competitive practices” to stifle the competition. If that’s the case, It would be funny as that very reason gave birth to the new plans being scrapped today.

We have reached out to a few contacts and we’ll update if we hear something new on the issue. So if you wake up tomorrow on a new plan, well we gave you a few hours heads up.

If you do have scoops like this for us, please send to tips@techsuplex.com. Thanks.

Phones / Ios 7: A Breakdown Of What Is New by techsuplex: 10:57am On Jun 14, 2013
Pictures and more details at the source: http://www.techsuplex.com/2013/06/12/ios-7-a-breakdown-of-what-is-new/

Apple unveiled the new redesigned iOs 7 on monday with a couple of design changes, some new features and tweaks. Hype and media blitz aside, what are the changes that have actually been made to Apple’s mobile operating system? We have answers to that, here’s what’s different on the new iOs:

The User Interface (UI)

Apple has in the past few has been bashed for not really changing the look of iOs’ user interface since the very first iteration. Apple has taken note of the criticism and made some changes to the UI on iOS 7. Skeuomorphism (the principle in which design cues are taken from the physical world. e.g Apple’s use of “leather” and “wood” textures on iOS 6 and below) has been killed in the favour of a more modern, “flat” design in iOs 7. The icons have been redesigned as well (Yes! the weather icon is no longer always stuck at a sunny 73 degrees) Some argue that the new icons are a step in the wrong direction, but hey, they are different all the same. A brighter color palette as well as some transparent elements and even a new system font (Helvetika Neue Ultra Light) have also been introduced to jazz up the UI.

Gestures

iOs 7 is more reliant on gestures than ever before. In addition to the slide to unlock gesture and dragging the notification drawer down from the top of the screen, users can pull up the Control Center from the bottom. Swiping slightly down from the top of an icon row reveals a search bar, and alarms can be dismissed by sliding up. Also much like BlackBerry 10, you can now go back a level by swiping from the right edge of the screen to the other side.

Control Centre

Control Centre (mentioned above) is a swipe up menu that brings quick settings such as WiFi, air-plane mode, screen brightness, etc. It also allows you control media and flip through open apps. This (and multitasking) would probably be one of the most welcome changes for iOs users. It is a pain in the butt to have to exit your app and dig through the settings to make the same changes on previous iterations of the OS.

Multitasking

Multitasking has been upgraded and now supports all apps, unlike previous versions of iOS were stopped at services and stock apps. Apps would also update in the background without affecting battery life, and it is now smart enough to selectively update certain apps at certain times of the day or when there is WiFi. Apps would also now auto refresh as soon as they receive push notifications, so you don’t have to wait and refresh the app after opening as is currently available. The multitasking UI is also changed from the static grid of icons at the bottom to a fresher card-based system with app previews on each card, reminiscent of WebOS.

AirDrop

AirDrop is a new feature in iOS 7 which can be accessed from within the Control centre that lets you share content with other iOS users who are close by. It however is only available on the iPhone 5, fifth-generation iPod touch, fourth-generation iPad, and iPad mini.

Camera and Photos

The camera app on iOs 7 has been refreshed with improved UI, photo framing, and integrated filters. The Photos app has also been revamped and automatically arranges images by date and location.

Safari

Apple’s stock mobile browser, Safari now features improved full-screen browsing, gesture-based navigation, and a new flipping card-tab overview that is near identical Google’s Chrome for iOS and Android. The search bar on the right is also gone as the address bar now doubles as the search bar as well. Safari also has the newly announced iCloud Keychain, which syncs passwords and credit card information across devices integrated.

Siri

Siri also gets updated in iOS 7, the visuals have been flattened to match the rest of the OS and there is now a male voice option added to it as well. Also, The depth of Siri’s “reach” has been improved. It can now control functions such as toggling Bluetooth or controlling brightness and can also also reference Twitter, Bing, and Wikipedia when answering queries.

iTunes Radio

iTunes Radio service which is integrated into the music player lets you choose songs to listen to on demand, and it has the ability to curate radio stations based on particular songs, artists, albums, or genres. It would only be available in US at launch though.

There are a few other changes and new features, we’ll look into them when we do a full OS review when it is available in its final form, before then though, it is safe to say that iOs 7 is the biggest change from status quo since iOs debuted in 2007. Whether the refresh is enough to satisfy those who think iOs is stale now, is up for debate. One thing that isn’t though, is the fact that upon release, it would be quickly and widely be adopted by the legion of iOs users who are out there now
Phones / Cross Platform BBM: Looking At The Bigger Picture. by techsuplex: 6:46pm On May 17, 2013
Originally posted here:[url]http://www.techsuplex.com/2013/05/16/cross-platform-bbm-looking-at-the-bigger-picture/

The biggest news from the BlackBerry Live keynote on Tuesday was definitely the announcement that BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) was going to be available to iOs and Android devices for free starting this summer. Almost as soon as we tweeted that on our Live tweet (which made the big screen at BBLive by the way–Woohoo!) my mailbox and twitter lit up with requests for me to share my thoughts on the issue. So here goes.

I’m pretty sure the first thing that came to many minds would have been that BlackBerry had committed suicide of sorts (and maybe they have, who knows? Only time would tell for sure), Why would BlackBerry open up its most prized possession to competitors (android and iOs) who are larger and doing way better than it is at the moment? Doesn’t seem like there is any sense in it or is there?

Maybe there is.

Just over a year ago, not long after Thorsten Heins took over as BlackBerry CEO I, Babse and David (AWOL writers here), had a discussion similar to this. at the time, one of the Directors and co-Founder of BlackBerry Jim Balsillie had left the company and sold his shares. The gist was that he had suggested that BlackBerry dump their hardware business and instead, focus on being a service by opening up BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) as a whole to other devices and then get a commission of the service as they do for BlackBerry devices. His reasoning was that BlackBerry wasn’t making any money off hardware or software any longer (In fact their hardware division was running at a loss, and BYOD concept had started getting into the enterprise market, so the demand for BES licenses had reduced to an extent) and the bulk of the money being made was from BES and BIS service charges.

The danger in this idea was three-fold, firstly, BlackBerry’s has a largely loyal user-base. I doubt many other companies can get away and survive for this long with the type of behavior they exhibited pre- Thorstein–multiple product delays, slow response to competition, uncompetitive products etc. Such a move, would be alienating the last bit of customers who have kept faith in the brand for so long. Getting a new market base from scratch for a brand being dragged in the mud at that time would have been pretty difficult.

Secondly, after spending all that money developing the BlackBerry 10 OS which they had already stated they were open to licensing out to other OEMs, adopting the service only strategy Jim suggested would mean shelving the OS and throwing away all their investments in that regard, because the only way another OEM would consider licensing it was if the platform had proven to be up to scratch and in demand. No one would license stuff the owner wasn’t going to invest in themselves.

Thirdly, it would leave all their revenue in the hands of networks. BIS may be advantageous to the networks in terms of speed and congestion because of BIS’ data compression, but in the long run, networks make less money on BlackBerry plans than they would on regular data plans seeing as they have to share the payments for BlackBerry plans with BlackBerry. And without putting hardware out, the network’s need for BlackBerry service reduces especially when they can make more money by offering their data directly. So why would a network choose to make less money when they can make more?

At the time I had the above discussion, I was of the opinion that they could open up BBM and BlackBerry service only when BlackBerry 10 was a proven success and they had gained back some traction. Is BlackBerry 10 already a proven success? It’s hard to tell, mostly because I think it’s still early days. Asides the fact that they were able to return to profitability after offering the Z10 for just half a quarter is all the information I have, and even that could be a one off. It’s still too early to tell, ideally it would take a couple of quarters to tell if BlackBerry 10 is a success or not, It most likely would do well at first as a lot of individuals AKA “BlackBerry People” (a bit more on this below) and companies that swear by their BlackBerry devices replace the old ones, the key point for it to succeed would be whether it is able to attract new users, that haven’t used BlackBerry before. As at their last earnings they said 55% of their Z10 sales were to non-BlackBerry users…so maybe they are attracting those users already, they have data, we don’t. Till I can see that data, I’ll still feel it’s too early to say.

BBM multiplatform

Now to the heart of the matter. What possible reasons are there for BBM to go cross platform? In one word revenue. I’ll explain.

As far as I’m concerned, BlackBerry’s “fall” from the top revolved around their inability to define themselves, instead, they tried to be everything everyone else was or what they thought everyone else wanted them to be. They tried to make everyone happy instead of focusing on their strengths. After the iPhone launch in 2007 rather than try to focus on a product which would further differentiate the iconic BlackBerry brand and create its own space, they launched the Storm hurriedly as a response. It was the first BlackBerry model I skipped. I thought it was awful. They never really did recover from the storm. And they kept slipping, they pushed their legacy OS, stretched it past its limit by adding new features to try and compete with newer, more modern Oses, and truth be told, the fact that they were able to get some of the features on the legacy OS knowing what it started out to be, is a testament to the brilliance of their software team. BlackBerry may have been in a stronger position (emphasis on may) if they had focused on being a brutally efficient communication tool, with kick-ass battery-life while building a new OS to compete in the background. But that’s in the past.

Since Thorsten took over, he has harped on a few things over and over again, “focus”, “mobile computing”, “BlackBerry people”, etc. I think Blackberry wants to own the mobile computing space and to do that, they need to get on a huge number of mobile devices (and they are doing so via their Enterprise device management solutions and now BBM for starters, who knows maybe more later). They aren’t trying to be another Apple or Google (at least in the short-term) rather they are becoming their own identity, owning their brand, creating their own space. They market BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry as a whole now as “for BlackBerry people” (i.e “hyper connected”, multi-tasking, ambitious, < insert marketing jargon here> etc, You can watch this video here where Thorsten first used and explained the term). I’m pretty sure it could have been easy to put a home button on BlackBerry devices like every other OS does, but they chose not to, they chose to try and shift the paradigm away from buttons and going in and out of apps, to a more modern gesture based flow and it does work. It may not be for everyone though…at least not right away. They are focused at a particular set of people–a particular set of “BlackBerry People” who would use BlackBerry regardless of whether BBM is there or not. The selling point for these isn’t BBM, it could be security, or the “flow”, or the OS level integration 3rd party apps can access, or maybe the multi-tasking or even just plain sentiment. They estimate they can be profitable by focusing on that subset of the market alone (at least in the short-term) and they may be right, just selling 1 million Z10s took them out of the red.

Are they losing money off the people who don’t get the next BlackBerry or ditch the platform because of BBM? Yes…and no, not really. How so you ask? Those people who need BlackBerry devices for BBM alone mostly aren’t buying new BlackBerry devices just for BBM, they keep their old ones. Like seriously, what percentage of BlackBerry users who use the device for ONLY BBM, would shell out N98,000 or N120,000 for a Z10 or Q10 respectively? Not a significant percentage in my opinion. The money BlackBerry makes of these would be about 30% of their monthly subscriptions that would be about N300 or N450).

Now that percentage that keep BlackBerry devices just for BBM hurt the BlackBerry brand in a sense. They expect everything on every other platform to get on their phones, they can’t have that, so they aren’t satisfied…they complain and tarnish the brand’s image. By letting them go and still offering them the one thing they want from BlackBerry as a whole…for free, Blackberry would have in one single move, set in motion a chain of events that would better the brand image (less slander by unsatisfied users) and widened the brand’s reach. BBM is arguably heads and shoulders better and more efficient than most other IM clients, If the adoption is high, do you know how much free marketing it would be for BlackBerry if BBM is one of the top apps on Apple’s app store and Google Play? This brand laundering and marketing is way more valuable than the N300 – N450 per month revenue they would otherwise have made from the same people.

Still on those customers that ditch the platform, BlackBerry still does retain them via BBM they aren’t lost totally per se, BBM can be monetized in several ways down the road, services like the already running BBM money (a mobile money service that runs on BBM in Indonesia), the just announced BBM channels and other services possibly in the pipeline that run on BBM as a platform could be a new source of service revenue to replace the old sources (BES and BIS subscriptions which have been going down because, first you if you don’t need high grade security and control as an enterprise, you can use Microsoft Exchange server for the new BlackBerry devices from which BlackBerry makes no service revenue and BIS plans are now low cost, so less money is made there as well). So a new stream of revenue and a laundered brand in one move.

Lastly, while all this is going on, the BlackBerry 10 ecosystem is developing and inching closer to the big 2 ecosystems (iOs and Android), Big apps and games are there now (Skype, Ruzzle, Kindle, Tunein radio, Evernote, Dropbox, Keek, Asphalt 7, Modern combat 4 etc) are there now, more are coming (there’s a leaked beta of instagram floating about), exclusives like Blaq (which is now my favorite twitter client on any platform) are there as well. You are even beginning to get situations where top apps (e.g Animoog) from the number one ecosystem (iOs), skip android and are available on BlackBerry first. Even developers like Songza who first offered their app as an android port are now developing a fully native BlackBerry 10 version after seeing strong demand from the platform.

So there is definitely some traction there. If that traction proves to be long term and BBM gets successful on the other platforms in the future, offering exclusive features and better experiences on BlackBerry could also be a tool to win back customers to their hardware. This may sound far fetched (it actually IS far fetched) but it could one day get to the point where it becomes, “the only reason I have an iOs/android device is because of the apps, I can get a better experience, integration (read this) AND those apps on BlackBerry 10.

Or maybe not. Time would tell.

For some people that jump from 3310 to BB, their first experience of a real phone is BB and as such they don't know that all they are seeing for the first time was already enjoyed by many years back.
Eg.
Many talk about email, push emails was already on symbian before 2008.
Opening many apps and switching between. Since 2009 , symbian has been running multi-tasking.
The good thing about BB is that it opened some people's eyes to smart fone but the smartest one always stepped up their game to Android. The Ultimate OS
symbian didn't have push. it polled emails (the phone checks the mail server for new messages at intervals, with BlackBerry's push email, the server "pushes" the email to the phone. That's why if you turn off your BlackBerry and you have 10 emails while it's off, you will see them the moment it comes back on. Symbian didn't do that)

I cringe when I come across threads that compare Blacberries to Droids. Naija is known to always carry last when it comes to technology and developments.
The only other phone manufacturer that's in the same class is.. well Apple.

@Those saying Z10s gettin android apps. That the biggest joke I ever heard. The BB10 OS is a major improvement by Blackberry (formerly RIM) but dey arent gettin android apps. And to make mayyers worse its gona tak a while for developers to take the OS seriously thats if the franchise survives. People shud read up more on stuf.

As seen from the pictures below, BlackBerry 10 as a platform can play android apps through an emulator just the same android plays its apps. It won't play ALL the apps (e.g apps that are built with the android NDK exclusively) but it definitely does play android apps. In fact a good number of apps on BlackBerry Workd are android apps.

What's better, is you can port android apps your self and side load them on your phone (You can see instagram and flipboard running in one of the pictures and those aren't on BlackBerry World yet) THere's a tutorial on how to do that here:
http://www.techsuplex.com/2013/04/02/tip-how-to-install-android-apps-on-your-blackberry-z10-and-playbook/

Coming from someone that uses all the platforms side by side daily, one platform, would never be better than the other, WHy? because everyone's needs are different.

just thought to chip that in, for more techy, gadgety stuff, feel free to visit the blog www.techsuplex.com

Instagram, one of the most sort after applications right now, is available for your BlackBerry 10 device, well sort of. has posted an android port of the app that works relatively well on the Z10. You will remember that we told you that instagram was coming to BlackBerry 10. There have also been reports that the instagram app for BlackBerry 10 was going to be an android port, it is unclear if this is a beta of the android port for BlackBerry 10 or it is just a regular older android version that works.

In any case, the app works well without a lot of bugs, so if you have been waiting for this, well here's your chance to give it a spin.

Phones / Gtbank Naira Mastercards Now Processing Blackberry App World Payments by techsuplex: 4:30pm On Jan 26, 2013
One of my major grouses with BlackBerry App World (FYI, it's called just BlackBerry World now) before now, was the fact that it was not accepting payments from my Guaranty Trust Bank Naira debit card. In fact, at some point, the only cards that worked were the dollar denominated cards. Much later, Zenith Bank Naira cards were able to make app purchases, but the GTBank card would not.

During the press conference in Nigeria last year, in response to a question, they said they were working on bringing full payment options to Nigeria and it seems that at least one hurdle has been cleared in that regard.

If you have a GT Bank Mastercard be rest assured that you can now make payments and purchase content from BlackBerry World. If you have any other card, please try and let us know the results in the comments.

Phones / MTN Launches Call Sponsor Service, Lets Reciever Opt To Pay For Call. by techsuplex: 6:44pm On Jan 17, 2013
MTN Nigeria has just launched a new service “Call Sponsor” for its prepaid subscribers in which the a customer can initiate a “call collect” call and if the receiver agrees to, he can pick the tab of the call. The Call sponsor service will be available to all MTN prepaid tariff plans except MTN Zone.

Here’s how the service works:

First, initiate a Call Sponsor call to your sponsor by dialing *121*your sponsor’s number#. Example: *121*08030000000#

You will get the following response:

“Call in progress. Please wait while your call is being connected.”

The network will verify if the intending sponsor satisfies all the conditions necessary (e.g tariff, balance, etc) after which you will hear the following response:

“Welcome to MTN Call Sponsor service. Press 1 to accept, 2 to reject, 3 to accept and add to white list, 4 to reject and add to black list.

Your sponsor will be required to either press;

1 to accept the call
2 to reject the call
3 to accept the call and add your number to the white list
4 to reject the call and add your number to the black list

If your sponsor presses 1, the call will be connected and your sponsor will be charged for the call according to her/his MTN2MTN tariff plan rate.

If your sponsor presses 2, the call will be rejected and you will receive the notification message:

“Sorry, the call cannot be connected at the moment. Please try again later. Thank you!”

If your sponsor presses 3, the call will be connected and your number will be added to your sponsor’s white list at the end of the call.

If your sponsor presses 4, the call will be rejected and your number added to your sponsor’s black list..

Phones / Hackulous Shuts Down: Installous Gone...bye Bye Cracked Ios Apps? by techsuplex: 12:33am On Dec 31, 2012
Hackulous, the team behind the very popular Installous and Appsync has shut down taking with it Installous and Appsync.

Installous, the most popular unofficial store for “cracked” apps on iOs which was available via cydia, on jailbroken iDevices offered both paid and free apps from the iTunes apps store for free. While Appsync on the other hand, was a tweak which granted jailbroken iDevices the ability to download and install apps from other sources other than the iTunes App store and was critical to the functioning of Installous and other sideloading means of installing apps on iOs devices. As of right now, both apps are no more.

Phones / MTN Concludes LTE Tests In Kano by techsuplex: 5:44pm On Dec 14, 2012
A few minutes after posting the story about Airtel’s 4G LTE tests yesterday, we got a tip in the mail box that MTN was also running LTE tests in Kano which concluded yesterday. While our tipster would not give us speed results, he confirmed that nationwide tests were indeed going on right now, in preparation for launch next year. This is in line with our earlier story about MTN switching to an IP-based network to as to support a smooth transition to LTE next year.

Phones / Airtel Completes 4G LTE Trial In Nigeria by techsuplex: 6:20pm On Dec 13, 2012
Airtel Nigeria, this morning just hit us up with the news about completing their Long Term Evolution Networks trial in Lagos Nigeria, You will remember that we mentioned MTN and Globacom’s LTE plans a few months ago. From their tests, they were able to maintain connections as fast as 32-37 Mbps for downloads and 10Mbps for uploads. The tests were carried out in Lagos, but there are plans to carry out the same tests in other parts of the country. So if you have an LTE capable device and an airtel sim, you may want to flick the LTE antenna on every now and then to see if you catch one of the tests on a band your device supports.

Phones / Blackberry Introduces BBM Voice Calls: Lets You Call BBM Contacts Free! by techsuplex: 8:33am On Nov 14, 2012
BlackBerry have introduced the ability to make voice calls between BBM contacts. The Service which is called BBM voice lets you make voice calls over wifi to BBM contacts by simply tapping the call button while in a chat and you’ll start a voice call. BBM Voice will add some great depth to BBM, providing you the ability to escalate a chat to a voice call when the situation calls for it. This feature should be huge in emerging markets or for anyone calling long distance as there will be no long-distance charges.

Additionally, in BBM you’ll be able to see each users status as well so you’ll know who is available for a call and who isn’t. When on a call you’ll see a split-screen view and can still use any other apps on your device. So you can still use the chat function as well as send pictures within BBM or even check email or use the browser.

Programming / Developer Integrates Interswitch's Webpay With Wordpress Plugin by techsuplex: 6:59pm On Nov 13, 2012
A UK developer, Sean Barton has integrated interswitch's webpay solution into the popular woocommerce wordpress plugin. When the plugin is installed on a site, clicking a pay or purchase link sends the user off to Interswitch to enter their payment information as normal. Then they return to the site with their information in POST. It sends a CURL request to the Interswitch server which returns the payment status. If the status is positive then the order is set to Processed and the purchase process completed pending dispatch of the item(s). Id the CURL request returns an error then the message is presented to the user in conjunction with a ‘try again’ link which sends them off to Interswitch to enter their information again as per the requirements set out by Interswitch.
