Wretch32: The Indians someone talked about in my quote above, they are resourceful because they network and work together, same thing other Asians But Nigerians?? Nahh our case is different
I’ve decided to rest my case and take the advice of others here... it will remain a dream and tbh I can do just fine on my own
However, as soon as I’m settled in school I will like to change the trend and mentor two people from this thread (intending applicants)
In 2017 I messaged lagosiamyhome by sending her a direct message through this platform Told her my study plans, Infact I was already expecting I-20 from the school then We exchanged a few emails that would swing my decision eventually and today I’ve reaped the rewards . She may not remember but I’m eternally grateful for the impact those 2 back and forth emails we sent each other has on me today I turned down my admission and went back to dig deep and prepare better
That person I was in 2017 could be anybody here right now reading this!! I want to be part of a success story and I want to mentor someone as much as I’m needed
This is a challenge to the rest of you? How many have you mentored and how many are you willing to mentor, it’s not easy to come here and scrutinize transcript true and that itself is a selfless service but for those who are capable, don’t shy from mentoring others not just academically but career wise Like a wise man once said “ a little empathy goes a long way” Let’s try to make the our worlds a better place by helping each other and guiding each other rightly and selflessly
I rest my case... So are you saying Nigerians don't Network or help? However, I wont discourage you from networking with Indians and others. Yes, that's good. I am at the position i am today through connecting with Nigerians that are good. There are bad ones too tho and bad ones are more than good ones. You can't survive in the US without Networking. You will work alone and die alone. More so, the Indians they're telling you about care about themselves too. Some are good and others are bad. It's everywhere. For example, i had an interview with 8 people panel (Two Indians). I was notified about the position by one Indian recruiter. Now get this, I was drilled by just the Indians and asking questions out of the job description. Later, i'd find out that the job was given to their fellow Indian. I messed up by relating the interview questions to the recruiter (Indian). I guess they sent in their person after mastering the questions i was asked and got the job. Don't get me wrong, Indians are smart and some are not smart. I like this Indians because they get fellow Indians to the top IT jobs in the US. However, I didn't get to where i am today with the help of Indians or whoever you may think off. I got here through networking with great Nigerians with awesome mindset that keeps pushing you to get to the zenith with them. The same minds that provided the same help and information you're getting on this platform are the same that can help you get to wherever if you choose to align with them closely. I can't recollect 100's of people i have connected and so on. Nigerians in the US are crazy, No doubt. Still the same mindset of i don't want you to get to my level. I met a guy here on NL that we were both denied same day almost 4yrs ago just got a job that pay's him $140000/yr. He called me and told me what to do asap to build my profile for the skill-sets required for the position because they need more people. what do you say about this wonderful Nigerian? Word of advice: Choose your network carefully! There's an adage that says birds of the same feather flock together and a goat that walks with a dog will eat a dog's poo. Choose wisely! Addressing Shawarma and Lagosismyhome! I have no preference! You guys are doing a wonderful job here! Lagosismyhome abeg no vex! I understand where you're coming from and sharwama you too No vex. Case closed. All 2019 hopefuls keep your head high up and get the Visa. American dream is worth it if you want it. Live and let live! Texrem!!!! 38 Likes 4 Shares |

Wretch32: Guys, I was thinking, and the older guys could help out if necessary Some of us leaving need support, (not financial ohh Infact anybody that makes such requests will be blocked ) instead of just being thrown into the deep end We need to network, keep in touch and share opportunities if necessary And help others too who come via this platform as well Information is power, there are lots of things we can learn from each other, solutions can be proffered, mentorship and career advices only for students in status, or resident graduates(there should be a means of verification before being accepted into the group) @lagosismyhome is this possible ma? I believe as one of the elder ones you would be in great position to champion such a good cause.
Just an idea, I hope others like it tho Cos personally I’m already struggling with information, about going into a new country, no friends, and I’m yet to find a Nigerian student there, it helps having a mentor where are you going? Shoot!! |

sharwama: SHARWAMA’S DIARY OF GRATITUDE. So I just got back from DHL and I have my passport Mama I made it, it's no longer a dream or a story I wrote out of anxiety. It's real. All I feel right now is gratitude, pure gratitude. There's got to be a God up there who really cares about Sharwama a lot and His angels are all over NL, yes I have encountered some of them, I know them by name. I will post my transcript shortly but first, I'd like to write about the amazing angels I met on this platform, who became a great part of my success story. TEXREM After writing my GRE and TOEFL last year September 28 and October 27 respectfully, my best friend Ayo told me to go to NL and look for someone named Texrem. She said, "he is so busy but if he accepts to help you, you'd be in safe hands". So I created a username just so I could contact Texrem. I remember sending him a message asking for his help as I commenced the journey of choosing schools and applying. I remember his reply “I would be glad to help you” He didn’t have to keep to his words, but he did anyways. First, he went through my SOP’s for some schools, despite his busy schedule and said they were ok. However, at the bottom of that mail, he wrote “also apply to ETSU!’ ETSU was already on my mind and with Texrem’s "order", I shaa shaa applied. March 13, I received my admission letter from ETSU with international merit scholarship that covered 50% of tuition. I was super excited and I informed Texrem. Few days later, I got a GA offer from the department of Biology, estimated at $35,906, my deficit was $9,590 (insurance inclusive) and I fainted. I didn’t even apply or ask anyone for asssitanship. I believe it had to do with applying early( before the priority deadline) and my overall application. The offer was just too generous and I also informed Texrem. He has really been a part of the whole process, you know. From guiding me on how to complete my dynamic form, getting the right financial statetment for my I-20, to paying my SEVIS fee and I-20 shipping fee. Yeah he handled all that Then professors started writing to me, trying to convince me to pursue thesis in their labs, giving assurance of how much impact working with them would have on my career. It was overwhelming. I felt like a celebrity, I swear down! Again Texrem was there to caution and guide me. He directed me on how to schedule skype interviews with professors and I was eventually able to choose a lab I love. He taught me how to politely say "No" to a professor. I never sent a mail without Texrem going through it. I mean I always thought it was a bad thing to turn down offers from people you hold in high esteem but not anymore. I’m allowed to respectfully say NO. Texrem also guided me on how to schedule my interview and complete DS -160. Although my interview was booked for June 7, I sent my transcript in the first week of April, he took time to read and approved. I also kept mentioning that I needed a mock interview, he didn't even answer me for that one Instead he did something I would never forget in my life! It was on a hot afternoon on the second/third week of April. By after 3, I was having my siesta when my phone rang. It was Texrem, I kukuma picked. Me: Good afternoon, T: Good afternoon. Then he said Good morning Me: oh, yes the time difference, sorry. Next thing I heard was What’s your study plan? I froze instantly, I mean which one is study plan again this hot afternoon? Then it hit me! That was an interview question! I screamed out loud “Texrem No, Texrem nooooo, I am not ready at all at all. I mean I didn't see this coming" He didn’t even answer me, he was quiet, he was waiting patiently. I took deep breaths and answered. Brethren from that moment, it was a back to back something! Uncle kept bombarding me with questions, sounding so formal and official, I nearly piss for body, I swear down. You know my favourite part? Where he said “ I will be approving your visa” and ended the call. I cried ooo, I was like Lord I want to hear same words from a VO. That surprise mock interview gave me a whole new level of confidence. He showed me what pressure felt like and I knew I could handle the real interview. I was anxious but hell yeah I was ready… As my interview drew imminent, I tried getting him to do a second mock but he was extremely busy. A day to my interview, he called me. June 6th, I was sounding so low that evening; fear, anxiety and uncertainties. I thought he called to do mock for me, instead he left several tips and words of encouragement before ending the call like ; I believe you have gotten the visa, you already have great responses, just go and deliver, make sure you smile, have pauses before and between your sentences, so it won't seem like you crammed, be polite to the VO, it's okay to say sir/ma, it won't kill you, make sure you stare into the VO's eyes while answering, like see I no dey commot here without white paper There are so many more phenomenal things I wish I could share but I’d rather press pause here because words have started failing me or maybe it's coz I have started crying. Like look how far Sharwama has come. From reading for over 9 hours everyday for GRE and 6 hours daily for TOEFL, writing essays/letters of intent/ diversity statement. I even quit my job. Gosh, it's all over now, it freaking paid off. So this is me saying I owe so much to you; thank you Texrem, for everything that you do, for pushing me when I needed to be pushed, for scolding me when I failed to follow simple instructions, for believing in me when I couldn't believe in myself, for all the crazy jokes that made me laugh, for making out time for me despite how tight your schedule is, and most of all, for "coming down to my level". Thank you so much. I really hope you can be proud of me and how much I have evolved on this journey. Yes, I am coming to TN to buy you chicken and chips God bless you immensely, you are the best!
Roasted! I have been sharwamalized here! Congrats to you! Your resilience paid off! I know you can trouble my life, even with my actions trying not to give the time, you kept on knocking to get the time and attention without backing out. Thanks for understanding my busy schedule. I am happy for you! Johnson city awaits you! JC welcomes you! Fly fly fly! Wishing you fall 2019 guys the best! 12 Likes 1 Share |

keji157: Good day everyone. I've been a silent follower. I recently applied to ETSU in March 2019 and I got my application approved on May 3rd to attend ETSU in Fall 2019. A mail was sent to me which contained a link to filling a form for my i20 which I did immediately. when applying in March, I submitted my dad's bank statement to the schoo which covered for Dec 2018 to March 2019. I got a mail from the school last night insisting I submit statement from 3 most recent months I.e Feb, March and April/May. My dad has been out of the country hence I cant get his bank statement. I want to know if it's okay to use my mom's bank statement since she is around. I plan to mail the school informing them of change in sponsor before they issue me form i20.
Please I need suggestions or advice before I take the above steps. Thank you all shoot them a message for change of sponsor |

LagosismyHome:
There is no right or wrong answer ......... But when you dwell on something too much then it becomes a high Mountain . If its me they cannot travel without you so focus on getting yours first . The rest might follow seamlessly after. If you go with the I20 alone then if asked , be very upfront and say you would love your family to be together at some point but your i20 is for yours now. If you go with the other i20 then work with what you have and be ready to defend home ties
Interview is so subjective that there is no right or wrong way. Any of them can work. It depends on the voices in the VO head at the time of interview.. Some people have all the home ties in this world and are still denied ... So just Prepare for questions and how to present yourself well and hope for the best You just answered the question! focus on yourself first. They will issue F2 for your wife and kids if any and they can go and get the visa and join you after! 3 Likes |

I shared a LinkedIn post which he antagonized the authenticity. If how his post started didn't clearly show the intention, doesn't this show it
I get the whole idea of him trying to be the smartest guy in the room but gosh, this is a faceless forum. ToluwalekeA: Visa approved today. will share transcript soon.
Note: the VO denied all students with no GRE exam. Atleast i could count 6 before me. pls kindly do GRE even if u did not do well.my friend had 278 and his bisa was approved though we both have GA that waived tuition with stipends. No bank statement required. Wish everybody success. Thank you nairaland. i used nairaland for my Visa to the UK and now the US. am grateful to everybody. cheers.
1. Congrats! 2. Please, GRE does not guarantee a visa. I have seen tons of student get visa without GRE and i have seen students got denied with GRE. All that matters is preparation. However, Standardized exam do improve your chances of getting the visa. 3. You got visa with GRE is your business! You didnt get visa without GRE is their business! You get visa with/without GRE is our business. 4. Prepare as you go for your interview. Dont be discouraged because you didnt write the GRE. You will get the visa IJN. Success to you all! 17 Likes |
