Career / Re: Graduating With A Second Class Lower by TheOne2(m): 7:04pm On Apr 22, 2007
Guys,

I simply do not understand the crux of this debate.  Are we saying peeps that graduated with 2.2 are better than those that graduated with 1st class and 2.1? I think we should all be objective here and not allow our emotions rule us. I will not say 2.1 is definitely better than 2.2 but in life there are rules that govern the game and if they are known beforehand then there shouldn't be any cause for complaints. How many of us here got into university without realising that in the outside world a 2.1 is viewed to be better than a 2.2? Knowing this, why would you not then go ahead to make sure you graduate with one knowing that it is what life requires of you. My humble opinion is that your grade is a fairly accurate description of your academic abilities. Please note that I said "academic abilities" which might be different from ability on the job. You might have crammed and whatever but the important thing is that you did what was needed to make the best out of the situation you were in. That is one of the key things that employers are looking for, the fact that you were able to make something good out of that situation. So the corollary is that since one is able to do well before, he'll most likely do well again. But pray, how do you expect someone who wants to differentiate between potential employees to go about it? Employ all of them for a year to see how they do on the job? Of course that is unrealistic so you will expect such a person to refer to past records which is what all the 2.1 & 2.2 stuff is all about.

When we say companies emphasize certification, what do we really mean? What are the certificates certifying? They certify your academic abilities. I'm sure no company has ever told anyone that they should your certificate to gauge how well you will do on the job. In a booming economy there would have been no need for all these arguments but we unfortunately find ourselves in a situation where it is "survival of the fittest". Please if you had a 2.2 do not be discouraged, you are the only one that can hold yourself down. Develop other skills and go for further studies. Alternatively, start with the not-so well-paying jobs and garner experience while proving your mettle. You will be surprised to discover that the 2.1/2.2 stuff only exists for entry level (no other way to differentiate) and when it comes to experienced positions it is what you have done and achieved that matters.

Last word: The opportunities are vast and available, all you need to do is quit feeling bitter about others and make out a way for yourself. While going about it, make sure you excel at it because people judge you based on what you've done in the past.

If you claim to be christian and you still profess these views then you are a DISGRACE to christendom. You say Christ came to the world to set free, is it not from demonic ideas like Osu that he came to set us free from. How would you have felt if you were born to a supposed "Osu"? Because you feel you were free-born now gives you the right to condemn others to a life of misery through your blind discrimination? You think our lord Jesus would be proud of the views you've espoused here? Stop to think for once and not be blinded by some stupid and evil cultural allegiance.

Career / Re: Can You Describe Your Job? by TheOne2(m): 11:08pm On Apr 19, 2007
My job?

As I speak it consists of studying and passing exams enough to bag an M.Sc degree.

In my normal life, my job involves making sure that oil fields are developed in an economical way and that oil wells are producing in an optimal manner (this is a very narrow description). If I start describing all the different parts, it's going to take a lot.

I absolutely love my job as it enables me to use my greatest strength which is my analytical ability. I love the travels, the sense of adventure when I get to go to remote places (there are days when I travel by road, airplane, helicopter and boat all in the same day).

Most importantly, I love it because I believe the pay is reasonable. I'll be miserable if I have all of the above with a miserable pay grin

The only part I hate is having to go to the field and maybe 2 of you are going to work and you have to go with more than 10 soldiers with tactical security plans, chase boats, guns everywhere etc. I found it amusing at first but grew to hate it with time.
Romance / Re: So difficult to find a nigerian Girl you can take home to mama in London by TheOne2(m): 12:55pm On Apr 19, 2007
As for me, don't know much about thamesmead boys. But i work hard, have a full time job, and have my own place----a lot of naija girls in london are similar to me; they have good jobs/careers, home and respect themselves not to hang with some jobless, flat-sharing man (black, white or naija) who will only sponge off them, use them for casual relationships and them leave them as single mothers -------- of which we have way too many already in london, especially among the black coomunity.

@tega78
When you say you have your own place, I take it to mean you have a mortgage on a flat/house? Does that mean you live in the 2 or 3 bedroom house all on your own? You don't sublet any of the rooms out? If that's it, and for a single young lady, you must be very rich by UK standards.

For a man that's in school or has just started working and isn't in a position to get a mortgage yet, where exactly is he supposed to live? On the streets? I say this as you seem not to want anybody who shares a flat with others and I can't think of any other option apart from buying a house. No wonder Naija guys will want to do "runs", if na the kind high-jump wey you dey set for them be that.

BE CAREFUL O!!

my sister i feel for your situation but if you are not OSU yourself you have to think of it diply before you go into it. in Igbo land we have the so called osu and UME, both are placed at the same level but OSU can never marry UME. if OSU can Discriminate in marrying an UME why not u. When Diala and OSU or UME marry things don't move very smooth history can tell you better.

It is not the fault of our generation and we cannot do anything about it. The changes has reached its limit and the limit is in marriage, before as i heard osu and non osu do not trade in the same market,do not eat togather and many other thing they don't do in common but all those are no longer in place today. Your Pastor can tell you many things but on that day he will not be their for you, after all a pastor can never advice you against it.

You have to carry your cross my sister because at the last day you family ,your pastor, your friends and even your guy will not be dia. its you and your GOD.

Me I have just one request to make:

Even if Fashola does no other thing for four years, he should only help all of us clear all the agberos off Lagos roads. They are a menace to society and no sane society should allow such. I was shocked when I heard that Tinubu said they were the ones that voted for him so he couldn't touch them. At least in this case Fashola got more tham 800,000 votes. Or are are there more than 800,000 agberos in Lagos.

This is my candid request to the new governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola.

I am amazed at some of the responses I'm seeing on this post. How can somebody, in the 21st century, still be counting something like the "Osu" caste system as something to consider? It doesn't make sense and we all know it. Are we not the ones that yelled about the inhumanity of white men enslaving Africans? So when it comes to us other rules apply abi? Abeg marry the guy, anybody wey no like make e go jump for water.

All you should do is make sure, with everything within, you that you are successful. If it were somebody as rich as Adenuga that is Osu, you think people will remember. Or the people will say they will not take his job because of that?

I have seen the video on youtube and am surprised none of you got the part where the guy said he used to work as a border guard on the Ghanian border. Do we now have Nigerians working as border guards in other countries? If he said Benin republic now, I would have given the benefit of the doubt and said the Nigerian side of the border. I wonder where the guy now met his Nigerian "masters" based in Lagos that he collects money for.

Some of these oyinbos are just too dumb. Or maybe they are too much in a hurry to link anything fraud to Nigeria.

@ 4play

Why did you choose just a part of the post. Please read below

It is simple reasoning but you are bringing emotions into it. Will it make sense if I declare myself Oba of London when I know the is a Queen here who is the recognized monarch here. If I should go to Buckingham Palace and announce that I'm the monarch to all Yorubas living in the United Kingdom, how do you think that would sound?

This is not just a nomenclature matter, we all know what monarchs represent in Nigeria. It is the equivalent of collecting the part of UK tax going to the royal family. If I say I am Oba of the Yorubas in London and that part of their tax should be paid to me, will it make sense? You were just too much in a hurry to poke fun to think things through. Anyways, I leave you to your views o as I no get power to argue.
Politics / Re: Why would obong of calabar try to stop the eze ndi igbo of calabar by TheOne2(m): 10:55pm On Apr 14, 2007
@ adconline

I am afraid your reasoning is flawed on this occassion. The Igbos in Calabar by virtue of their being resident there should fall under the authority of whatever monarch is recognized there. I do not think they need to segregate themselves and appoint a monarch to themselves in another man's land.

I think you are being unnecesarily on the defensive. Your retort about who will perform traditional functions is unfounded. He doesn't need to be Eze Ndigbo to perform new yam festival rites. If that's the case we should have Eze Ndigbo in all 774 local governments of Nigeria who will be performing new yam festival rites then?

Please note that I have given an objective analysis, I will appreciate it if there's no name-calling or stereotyping.

Politics / Re: Why Can't Nigeria's Oil Revenue Be Paid Out To Citizens? by TheOne2(m): 6:06pm On Apr 11, 2007
Simple.

You have to change the Nigerian constitution first to be able to achieve that which comes back to the issue of resource control. The income regimes in the 2 countries are different, as such a direct comparison cannot be made. You first of all have to remove the concept of a central purse from our constitution and allow each state pursue it's destiny. It's only then that such an idea would be practicable.

I tend to like the idea of decentralizing revenue. I feel it will bring the best out of us as a country as any state that is not making money now will be forced to THINK AND ACT. Political office will not be so juicy except for starters in the Niger Delta states which will all be very rich initially and such anybody seeking office will know that he's got real work on his hands and not just going there to "chop" federal allocation. With time other states will catch up by using whatever capital they have, whether human or material and we will become a prosperous nation in the long run.

Before I forget, it will also ensure  that distractive issues like sharia etc will not be on the front burner as those states will be busy thinking of how to make money rather than disturbing us with religious issues which should never be mixed with state issus.

Before anybody accuses me, let me state that I'm not from the Niger Delta. I'm from the south-west and while I think we might have it rough at first, I believe there are potentials which can be tapped but are being suppressed right now due to the oil craze.

are we the ones that should answer your questions on the sustainability of TINAPA? Or did we tell you we were there when they were doing the business plan? You are one of those Nigerians in diaspora who tend to think that people at home do not think before they do anything. Politics / Re: Eight Years Old Democracy, Water, Road, Light, How Well by TheOne2(m): 8:25pm On Apr 09, 2007
Dayokanu,

are you that tall lanky guy that was in OAU chemical engr dept. Dunno what it is but this ur name rings a bell.

All,

I don't know why we chose to suffer from selective amnesia. I know it's fashionable to climb on the bandwagon and engage in OBJ-bashing. I can bet that all of you bashing OBJ now will in a few years time start singing - OBJ's time was good!! It is just in our nature as Nigerians not to se anything good in the present leadership.

Having said that, personally, this government has had a better impact on my life. I know where I was during those illiterate military regimes and I know where I am now. People talk about exchange rate, why can't anyone present a trend of naira exchange rate against the dollar since 1973 when it was introduced and let's see the trend. That would make for scientific analysis and not just mouthing the N88 -$1 in 1999 stuff. Are you forgetting that there was a dual exchange rate regime where govt officials were purchasing at N22 - $1 and selling at N88 -$1. The person that left it at N88 -$1, what was the exchange rate when he assumed power? It smacks of mischief or illiteracy to just mention rates without incorporating trends and the time value of money. When naira was even N88 - $1, how much was it on the parallel market. When was the last time the gap between official and parallel rates were this close?

Growing up in those military years, it was almost a waste of time going to school because you graduate and sit at home. It was very bad. Right now, the reverse is the case. Anyone that says the employment situation in the country has not improved appreciably is lying through his teeth. I graduated from a class of more than 70 people in 2002 and I don't know ONE person in that class that is not gainfully employed. People are even changing from one multi-million naira job to another. You find people having job offers from 3 oil companies at the same time. In those days will you even see an oil company advert talk less of applying. It was "man know man" but that has changed now. Anybody that hides under the excuse of "man know man" for unemployment in today's Nigeria is simply not good enough i.e. there are people who are able to prove themselves better at whatever assessment they are given.

Again, people talk about PTDF. Do you guys realize that PTDF has been in existence since 1973? With the same cash inflows as now? What were they using the money for then? At least OBJ govt used part of it to sponsor Nigerians for study abroad and rehabilitate some institutions. What were former govts using the money for.

At least when I listen to the news and hear about an appointed public official, I now see professionals in various fields. Before it was Alhaji this, Mallam that and you guys want us to go back to that state? We are all witnesses to what a simple thing such as letting people who know what they are doing occupy positions i.e. Soludo, Akunyili, Okonjo-Iweala, Ndukwe etc. Some simple issues bordering on equity of the federating units have been adhered to. Abi was it not in this Nigeria that 20 ministers will be announced and 15 will be northerners?

Concerning ASUU strike, is it under this government that ASUU started embarking on strike? I got into university in 1997 and my professor's salary was N10.000. Please ask them how much they earn now. If the idiotic military govts had not allowed the system to rot, you think we'll be in this situation now? It is on record that there was a time our universities were world-class, under whose regime did they deteriorate?

I'm just tired of hearing all these "throwing the baby out with the bath water" kind of comments.

I know the government has it's shortcomings e.g. Anambra situation, Adedibu, Anenih and his works ministry and other issues and I'm frustrated by these as well. We shouldn't because of these write off the positives carte-blanche.

FINAL WORD:

Judging on the impact on MY LIFE, this govt has done more than 100 times what previous govts have done.

How, if I may ask, did you come to the conclusion that Nigerian professionals don't succeed in Nigeria. I think you should reframe your assertion to say
"it's a good thing that Nigerian professionals succeed in other countries apart from Nigeria" because Nigerian professionals definitely succeed in Nigeria too. I know you are excited that the judge is Nigerian but you shouldn't then come to the unfound conclusion that Nigerian professionals don't succeed in Nigeria.
