Family / Dear Daughter (letter From A Single Lady To Her Unborn Daughter ) by vichofu(m): 5:49am On Jul 07, 2015
I bought my first compact brown powder over the weekend, along with a good shade of foundation and a powder brush. As I worked my way through putting my face together on Sunday morning, I laughed at myself for a bit. See, I remember the years of agony my mother faced with having two kids who are nothing like her where making up is concerned. I thought about how she tried everything to get us to be “make-up wearers” early enough and how she constantly rolled her eyes when she saw us ready to go out with bushy eyebrows, roughly put talcum powder and lip balm. I remembered her say at some point that we’d grow up suddenly and realize making up wasn’t such a bad thing, and I smiled at how right she was.

There’s something so decidedly feminine and adult about the whole process of getting ready and it made me think of you – even though you aren’t here yet – and my mom. I hope you meet her, and I hope she teaches you all the tricks with making up with her huge make up box that I hope you inherit. And then, I hoped that you too would one day celebrate how I was right about something you were stubborn about smiley

I settled into wondering what you would be like, and I hoped against hope that you wouldn’t inherit some of my characteristics. I hope you aren’t stubborn about your ideals and you are flexible enough to embrace change, unlike me and that you do not want to live a fantasy or build sand castles in the sky and hold on to its possibility with dogmatism. I hope you do not have my almost horrible ability to over-analyze and dissect any situation even when I know it’s only gonna cause me grief. I hope you do not dance around pessimism and negative what ifs like I tend to but hold on to optimism like your life depends on it, ’cause it does. I hope your nails are not short and stubby like mine, and they are as far away from your mouth, as the east is from the west. I hope you do not become overly independent or dependent. I hope you are never timid, and you can stand in front of every crowd to say everything that pops in your mind, intelligently. I hope you don’t shut yourself from the world when you feel bad, because people were made to both lift you up and bring you down; you need them, no matter the state of your mind. And I hope you don’t cry so easily or so often.

I hope you love food – the cooking as well as the eating -and you have a good eating habit. I hope you make good friends that would stand the test of time and are of good character, and I hope you keep them. I hope you know and love your body, never to lazy to keep it in shape and never shy of its weird complexities. I hope you are creatively inclined and that country music gives you peace and rock songs make you happy smiley . I hope it brings you joy to do crazy uncoordinated dances, like me. I hope you find your purpose early and work you way towards it with fierce determination. And I hope you’re a happy child, giving the joy to the world, one smile at a time.

I hope you have a good sense of self and hold on to becoming you. I hope you’re opinionated, actually, you have to be, it’s too strong in my family. But I mostly hope you know how to put a good balance, knowing where your opinions should rather be held on to, than said out loud. I hope your days are filled with confidence, knowing you can do anything with God and determination. I hope you’re more selfless than I try to be, knowing that people always come before things. And you’re smart and thoughtful and generous, not only because it’s sexy, but because it’s everything.

I hope you’re friends with my father, and that you spend your early years sitting at his feet, listening to words of wisdom and I hope his arms are still strong enough to lift you up like he lifted me up when I little. I hope every scar you get from the world moulds you into a woman of wisdom and character who understands better because she has learnt. And I hope it never ever gets you down. I hope you learn to love early and then find love. And I hope when you find “the one”, you treat him like he is the one.

I hope you’re more of a lady than I am, wearing skirts, heeled shoes and red lipstick. I hope your hair is always in place, ’cause I’m not sure I’d be able to help with that pretty well – my natural hair always needs to be set free in loose tangles on sunny afternoons smiley . I hope you’re strong and zealous and enthusiastic about life. I really hope you decide early on to live a life geared towards inspiring and helping others, living a story worth telling. I hope you work out your own salvation, love Jesus a heck ova lot and have a steady relationship, it’ll make all the difference in your life. I hope you set your path straight before you and walk in that direction daily, never losing sight of the big picture whilst still giving time to appreciate the beauties of life all around you.

Dear Daughter, above all, I hope I can be all things and more for and to you. A good example, a role model, a friend, a sister, a goofy partner, an available ear to your rants and a prayer partner. I’d love to share my shoes with you – hurry, have big feet!, and have you steal my clothes. I’d be excited to be chauffeur more often than not and your teacher every single day! I want to be the pillow you cry on when you get your heart broken – you most likely will – and I’d be glad to eat all the comfort food and get fat with you on the road to healing. And while I’m waiting to start this relationship with you, I’d spend these days of my youth becoming someone worthy to be looked up to as a mother.

Lots of love,

Politics / Election Campaigns - A Disgrace To The Citizenry by vichofu(m): 6:37pm On Aug 15, 2014
I was going through a friend's blog and stumbled on an article . i thought i should share it with you guys... smiley smiley smiley smiley

As we draw nearer to 2015 when most states will be electing their respective state governors and the country will also be electing her president nationwide, evaluating the fate of the Nigeria citizenry has become pertinent.

With the on-going mimicry of sharing bags of odourless Fufu, rice, milk, money and kerosene as we have seen in both Ekiti and Osun states, our politicians have finally succeeded in disclosing to the masses how hapless, poor and maybe seemingly worthless they perceive them to be. They have just told us that wooing the masses is pretty simple and very affordable. Or how else could they belittle the voters if not by demonstrating a flash-in-the-pan kind of kindness? Kerosene? Rice? Fufu? Milk? Money? Really? Won’t all of these finish within the first week after their elections? What insolence!

Indeed, Governor Kayode Fayemi and Ayo Fayose should go down as national heroes for successfully re-emphasizing the wonder of playing politics based on the “stomach infrastructure” of the populace; little wonder Rauf Aregbesola and Iyiola Omisore towed the same route in their recently concluded duel. Good as these wooing formations might seem for the politicians, the swiftness at which they have been able to sway these ignorant majorities should actually pose more worries for them than hope. I mean, now they should know that someone who is only concerned about his share of rice during election campaigns is neither someone who knows what good leadership is all about nor is he someone who is willing to take responsibility for the development of his community or the nation at large. And obviously, these categories of people constitute the majority who nag and criticize their leaders blinding because in the first place they never really had an apt idea of what good leadership entailed asides them getting free kerosene and Fufu.

Inasmuch as I agree that the majority of the voters in these communities might be poor and of low academic background and hence the ease at which they fall heads over heel for these political parasitic tactics however, I just believe they can do better due to the overstretched use of this tactics.

Really, I challenge INEC to take our electioneering processes to another level by offering voters an opportunity to express dissatisfaction in the aspirants where applicable amongst other things. I suggest there should be a “Vote of No Confidence” column for voters who feel at that the Political Maradona’s are not only incompetent but also misfits for the positions they are vying for. It is true we all have to exercise our civic rights but certainly not in favor of some political jokers.

As we approach 2015 with such an uncontrolled pace, we can only imagine the several political dramas that are yet to be revealed across the country. How many more will be impeached? How many more will be killed? How many more will have to port from one party to the other? How many will reject INEC’s results and prefer to shrug it out at the elections tribunal? 2015, we can’t wait! Let’s revive hope in our nation, vote leaders based on competence and dedication rather than for short-term freebies and ethnical satisfaction because, this way, our leaders will assume more respect for us all.

Culture / Why Do People Wear Tattoo? by vichofu(m): 8:48am On Jul 15, 2014
What is tattoo?

Tattoo, according to Wikipedia, is a form of body modification made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment.
The word “tattoo’’ reportedly has two major derivations. The first is from the Polynesian word “ta’’, which means striking something and the Tahitian word “tatau’’, which means marking something.
The tattoo tradition began over 5,000 years ago and the patterns are as diverse as the people who wear tattoos. Tattoos are created by inserting coloured materials beneath the skins surface.

However, there are some reports that the first tattoos were created by accident.
“Someone had a small wound and rubbed it with a hand that was soiled with soap and ashes; when the wound healed, it left a permanent mark on the skin,’’ says one of the reports.
In spite of the growing interest of social scientists in the study of tattoo traditions, there have been scanty historical records of the age-old practice.
All the same, tattoos come in various forms and designs and they have been used as ornaments and religious symbols by humans for thousands of years, with examples found on numerous preserved prehistoric specimens.
Its prevalence notwithstanding, experts insist that modern tattoos are not a cheap tradition, as tattoo artists usually charge good fees for their services.
“Most tattoo artworks are charged by the hour. This is always the case with large pieces which take multiple sessions to finish or anything that requires freehand,’’ says Mike Paul, a London-based artist.
“The hourly rate is, however, determined by factors such as operation costs, artists’ time, type and quality of the design, among other things.
“Some shops charge as little as 50 U.S. dollars (about N8, 000) per hour, while other fees may be as much as $250 (about N40, 000),’’ Paul adds.
However, Mr Ononiwu George, an Abuja-based artist, says that tattoos are permanent body marks which people choose to wear tattoos for various reasons.
“Some people wear tattoo because they want to remember somebody or an event. Others wear it because they want to express themselves artistically.
“Such people want to communicate some messages via the artwork on their bodies; particularly those messages which they may not be able to convey in words.
“However, some people wear tattoo for rebellious purposes; they just want to be different,’’ he adds.
Obi, who is into body arts, including tattoo art, says that tattoos are permanent body arts.
“We, however, do temporary body arts, face paintings and glamour arts; we call them celebration arts.
“Celebration arts are those kinds of designs you wear during birthdays or fashion shows. Besides, you may just want to take some photographs with the body arts, looking different.
“What makes the difference is the duration of the artwork on the body.
“Tattoos are more expensive because, they are permanent; the price ranges from N5, 000 to N40, 000, depending on your location,’’ Obi says.
Miss Rose Edobor, a trader, says that wearing tattoo has increasingly become fashionable among the youth.
“Young people have a liking for tattoo; tattoo may not appeal to you when you are old because by that time, your skin would have become wrinkly and saggy.
“So, when I become old, it is not going to make any difference if my skin has been tattooed or not. I just love tattoo because it beautifies my skin,’’ she says.
Sharing similar sentiments, Mr Osas Igbinosa, a barber, says that he likes the tattoo on his body because it gives him a sense of self-satisfaction.
“I like the tattoo on my body because it has a special meaning to me; anyway, it looks quite good on me.
“ I do not care what people think about tattoo, it is my body and I see the tattoo on my body as quite trendy.
“The tattoo designs are a mere decoration of my body and I love art; I love to wear art,’’ he says.
However, many people seem to have different conceptions or misconceptions about tattoo.
For instance, Mr Paul Phipps, an evangelist, insists that God has warned people to refrain from wearing tattoo because tattoo inscriptions are forbidden.
“God in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy specifically warned the children of Israel not to tattoo their body because any form of body inscriptions is forbidden.
“Tattoos even have some spiritual connotations, as they may be occultist in nature and whoever engraves such marks in his or her body can never enter the kingdom of God.
“So, it is not advisable for anyone who is a child of God to put on tattoo because it has to do with body inscriptions.
“Body inscriptions, no matter how they are done — whether manually or mechanically — involve blood and they are, therefore, not pleasing in the sight of God.
“Tattoos, whether permanent or temporary, are considered as some of things which God detests so much.
Expressing similar viewpoints, Alhaji Fuad Adeyemi, the Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyyah Mosque, Abuja, says that tattoos are forbidden in Islam, adding that Islam is an all-encompassing religion that touches all aspects of human endeavour.
“In Islam, tattooing is a forbidden area. Prophet Muhammad says the curse of Allah is upon those who those who wear tattoo and those who make tattoo inscriptions.
“Based on the teachings of the Hadith, it becomes a prohibited thing for a Muslim to wear tattoo.
“The main reason why tattoo is prohibited is that it mutilates the human body and changes the creation of Almighty Allah.
“When you try to reconstruct your body, it is, therefore, Haram (proscribed by Islam). It is also a sort of deceit to pretend to be what you are not,’’ Adeyemi adds.
The different viewpoints notwithstanding, anthropologists insist that tattoo is an ancient tradition in all cultures which has definitely come to stay. (NANFeatures)
