How many people actually learn languages in school.? All they do in school is teach you how to say good morning and write grammatically correct sentences. How many people learned to speak ibo yoruba hausa and french from secondary school? This is a waste of time and resources. You cant teach nigerians to speak other nigerian languages in secondary school yet you expect them to learn the most difficult language in the world in school. Somebody is high on something 1 Like |

felifeli: Since your children may have to be dealing with a lot of Chinese in the future considering how much they are investing in Nigeria, doesn't it make sense that those children learn at least the basic of that language so that your country does not get ripped off when doing business ? Don't be myopic in your views. The Chinese learn English for the same reason. Stop reason like a senseless man. Can chinese ever waste their children times and resource to learn any of our languages? One of the reasons china attained their present economic status and influence is because, they didn't allow foreign cultures into their system. African leaders are not but visionless hypocrites. 4 Likes |

Alright! Even though some of our languages are dying and our culture is being forgotten by everyone except white people; and we are barely literate in English in this country, have yet to master French (a language spoken by all our neighbours), we're gonna learn Chinese, with all the different characters and different signs AND NOT WRITTEN IN THE SAME ALPHABET. We have obviously finished learning everything there is to learn in Science, Math, Social Studies and English. Great. #Sarcasm 2 Likes |

D sage: One of the reasons china attained their present economic status and influence is because, they didn't allow foreign cultures into their system. My question is, does allowing foreign cultures into one's own system relents a country from attaining a good economic and influencial statut? |

Nigerians are very myopic. Why would the Chinese need to learn a Nigerian language. Is any Nigerian language a recognised international language of communications. Why do the Dutch and Scandinavians speak almost flawless English whilt most people in the UK only speak english? Because english is a recognised international language. Are the Dutch and Scandinavians better for it, I think yes. Thank goodness they are not mumu like the majority on this thread and say they wont learni english because the English arent learning dutch. China is becoming a superpower and it is forward planning. The only shame is that this initiative will only exist on paper and we will never see a teacher teach mandarin in a Lagos classroom. 3 Likes |

mukina2: The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, said on Monday that the state government would introduce Mandarin, or Chinese language, in public schools’ curriculum as from next session. So,what will now happen to my YORUBA LANGUAGE. ÓMÒ TOSÓLE NÙ,OTI SAPOYA KÓ. any country that forsakes its own God given language for another, should prepare for its dooms' day, because, there is no way you will learn another man's language without learning and practising his culture and religion. for example,a yoruba man that grows up in the north or wants to learn Hausa language should prepare himself on how to eat GORO or practice Senseless killing of innocent souls. so,Lagos state and its citizen should prepare for KUNGFU FIGHT in all ramification. Fashola, think twice before embarking on this suicide mission, whereby children will begin to fight their parents with KUNGFU,WOMEN WILL BEGIN TO GIVE BIRTH TO SHORT SHORT CHILDREN LIKE AKIN AND PAWPAW. 1 Like |

to those accusing fashola of not promoting cultural heritage, abeg which govenor restructured the eyo festival? promoted the lagos carnival amidst many more. chinese mandarin is like the most popular language in the world owing to its vast majority speakers, much more popular than french, german combined so i see no evil in learning it. it improves the student IQ and learning capability which is definately what we need in nigeria today with the alarming number of dumb people walking around. you guys are just being paranoid. thumbs up to fashola |

Please,Nairalanders, there's something that is confusing to me. If a man is vast and sound in is local language, but not knowledgeable in English language, why do we have to consider such a person AN ILLITERATE? If we conclude that, such a person should be called an ILLITERATE,then, what should we call A BRITON OR AN AMERICAN who is not knowledgeable in YORUBA,HAUSA AND IBO LANGUAGE? don't you think the Briton or American should as well be called an ILLITERATE? I NEED ANSWERS PLEASE. 2 Likes |
