How can one explain or rationalize Ojukwu embracing the Marxist decree 34 that abolished regional governance in place of a powerful centrist arrangement and only a few months later call for a return to the status quo?

It was only Ojukwu as military governor of the eastern region that wholeheartedly welcomed decree 4 . That decree had all the hallmarks of a Marxist and Zikist ambition for Nigeria with Igbos holding the reigns of power . It was not until Ironsi was deposed and states carved out of the regions leaving the Igbos on their own that Ojukwu began ranting for a return to regional assembly.

I have stated here that the Igbo Marxist coup of Jan 1966 was to stall the creation of Calabar-Ogoja-Rivers Region out of the then defunct eastern region by an act of parliament that was pending for approval. The so-called minorities took their plight to Lagos after all entries and prayers for such fell on deaf ears in the regional house at Enugu which was overwhelmingly dominated by Igbos. Even Zik warned that granting the seccesion of present day Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River will sound the economic death of the Eastern region. The minorities took the matter to Lagos and had already secured the backings of the North, mid-West and mid Western regions representatives to push for the carving out of COR region out of the old Eastern region. All was already set for approval in January of 1966.
