The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Monday provided free petrol to commercial motorcycle riders, better known as Okada riders, in Ado-Ekiti. The supply of free fuel was launched at a petrol station along Ikere Road in Ajilosun with the riders forming long queues to benefit from the gesture. Many of the beneficiaries decorated their bikes with the posters of Fayemi. They got five litres of fuel each in the scheme which continues on Tuesday. The fuel station was besieged by the riders as soon as the news spread that free fuel was being supplied at the outlet. The APC candidate urged the riders not to collect transport fare from the commuters they would be conveying. Fayemi’s appearance at about 10:45am turned the filling station to a carnival as the riders hailed his gesture and recalled what he did for their unions during his first tenure. The APC candidate urged the riders to ignore allegation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) camp that he would ban commercial motorcycle operations if he wins the July 14 poll. Fayemi said rather than banning Okada business, he would give the operators more incentives including soft loans, equipment and provide good roads to aid their operations. Recalling some of the goodies enjoyed by the riders during his first term, Fayemi revealed that he procured 280 motorcycles, 500 tricycles for them and gave their union a brand new bus. He added that his government, which was in office between 2010 and 2014, gave the riders’ union N150,000 monthly allowance for logistics and running of their office. Fayemi also revealed that his first administration celebrated Okada Riders’ Day for the first time in the state’s history and also provided 3,000 free helmets for their use. A beneficiary, Segun Fowobaje, hailed Fayemi for the free fuel supply which he said would add value to their business. Another rider, Wale Esan, assured Fayemi of the votes of the riders describing him as the “true friend of the masses”, saying his government did the best for them in the history of the state. A security aide to the APC candidate, Deji Adesokan, who coordinated the scheme said the gesture was to identify with the riders as important stakeholders in the state. Adesokan said the free fuel given to the riders was also to the benefit of commuters who would be conveyed free of charge. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/ekiti-guber-okada-riders-get-free-fuel.html

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has invited presidential aspirants, Governors, Senators and other leaders to a meeting on Monday in Abuja. The meeting is coming amid plans by leaders of the Reformed-All Progressives Congress (R-APC) to defect to the PDP. Ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor Ahmed Makarfi; ex-Minister of Special Duties Tanimu Kabiru Turaki(SAN); ex-Governors Sule Lamido and Ibrahim Shekarau are some of the presidential aspirants invited. They will discuss terms for accepting R-APC leaders, like Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara and others into the party. Top on the agenda is the report of the ex-Governor Liyel Imoke Contact and Mobilisation Committee, which has been negotiating with R-APC and about 30 “minor” parties. The notice of the meeting was conveyed to the critical stakeholders by the Party’s National Secretary, Umaru Tsauri. It reads: “The National Chairman of our great party, the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, hereby invites all PDP presidential aspirants, all PDP governors and former governors, PDP members of the National Assembly and former members, all members of the BOT, members of PDP former ministers forum and all state chairmen to a crucial meeting on Monday, 9th July, 2018 at Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.” Although the notice was silent on the agenda, a source in the National Working Committee (NWC) told The Nation that the “meeting will discuss the proposed defection of R-APC leaders and other bigwigs to PDP; alliance talks from other parties and the way forward for PDP in 2019. “We will specifically look into the report and recommendations of ex-Governor Liyel Imoke Contact and Mobilisation Committee which had been holding talks with likely defectors and our leaders in some affected states. “Certainly, we will also consider the offers from Saraki, Tambuwal, Kwankwaso and others who are interested in returning to PDP with a desire to contest for the presidential ticket. “Do not forget that there are some knotty issues in the report which have not been clearly defined. This is what is delaying the expected mass defection to PDP.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/r-apc-pdp-summons-atiku-makarfi-others.html

A former Chief Information Officer with the Federal Ministry of Information, Yushau Shuaib has asked the National Industrial Court (NIC) to commit the Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed to jail for allegedly refusing to comply with the judgment of the court. Yushau, who was a former spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), asked the court to jail the minister along with the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) and their Permanent Secretaries for their alleged joint refusal to comply with the judgment of the industrial court delivered on November 22, 2017. Justice David Isele of the National Industrial Court (NIC) had last year ordered the immediate reinstatement of Shuaib into the public service four years after he was forcefully retired in 2013 for writing an opinion article on former Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, over lopsided appointments in the public service. The judge had specifically ordered the Federal Government to compute and pay within 30 days all Shuaib’s salaries, allowances and other emoluments due to him from July 2013 to the judgment date and interest at the prevailing commercial bank’s rate on his total package. In addition, the court directed that Shuaib should be placed at the appropriate position he ought to be in the service. However, since the verdict was handed down, the minister and other respondents were said to have refused, neglected, omitted and failed to carry out the orders of the court. In a 34-page motion on notice filed at the court against the minister and other respondents to enforce the execution of the judgment, the plaintiff claimed that several letters dated December 4 2017, December 14, 2017 and April 9, 2018 were written to the respondents on the need to obey and execute the court judgment to no avail. The fresh motion filed by his counsel, an Abuja-based lawyer Barrister James Ode Abah of Bonafide Legal Chambers, prayed for an order for the enforcement of the judgment. The suit also prayed the court for an order that all the salaries, allowances and emoluments due to the plaintiff be ordered to be paid to him forthwith along with interest at the prevailing commercial bank interest. In an 18-paragraph affidavit in support of the motion, Shuaib claimed that there had been no court order that stayed execution of the judgment he secured in 2017, hence the refusal of the judgment by Lai Mohammed and others to obey the orders was unfair labour practice and contrary to international best practices in labour employment and industrial relation matters. The affidavit personally deposed to by the judgment creditor averred that the court has the power to enforce its own judgment and commit to prison any person or organization who commits acts which in the opinion of the court constitutes contempt of court. Meanwhile, no date has yet been fixed for the hearing of the motion which has been filed. Shuaib was offered automatic employment by Delta State and Federal Government after winning State and Presidential Awards of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) scheme in 1993. He had served as Public Relations Officer at various government establishments including Delta State Government House, Asaba; Federal Ministry of Information, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, National Assembly, Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), National Press Centre, and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) before the compulsory retirement. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/ex-nema-spokesman-yushau-shuaib-wants.html

Following allegation of forgery of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate by Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday, charged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack, arrest and arraign her. In a statement issued in Abuja by Kola Ologbondiyan, its National Publicity Secretary, the party urged the the President not to provide a cover for Adeosun “in the character of his Presidency whenever close allies or agents are found wanting on issues of corruption.” The party said the revelation vindicates its stand that the Buhari Presidency is “a haven of fraudsters, common thieves and persons of questionable character, adding that the recent revelation has cast a full-length dark shadow on the overall integrity of his administration.” The statement added: “The world can now see how the Buhari Presidency has been concealing sharp practices under it. We can now see why there is humongous corruption under President Buhari’s watch and why Mr President has refused to take any concrete steps to check the sleazes in his administrations. “Perhaps such ‘artful dodgers’ were deliberately hired and placed in revenue related agencies to perfect the pilfering of our common patrimony for interests in the Buhari Presidency.” The PDP challenged President Buhari to prove himself a man of integrity by allowing an open system-wide and independent inquest into all alleged corrupt practices in his presidency. It further said: “We challenge President Buhari to be bold to allow an open independent inquest into the exact figures amounting to the trillions of naira oil revenue earned by the nation in the last three years and how he had spent same with Mrs. Adeosun as minister of finance. “Mr President should allow an open inquest into his handling, with Mrs Adeosun, of all our depleted foreign financial instruments, including the Excess Crude Account (ECA), from which funds were taken without recourse to the National Assembly. “President Buhari should also allow an inquest into his administration’s borrowing of over N10 trillion in 30 months, with Mrs Adeosun as minister of finance and the purposes for which the money was used. “Furthermore, we challenge President Buhari to allow an inquest into the leaked memo at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) showing N9 trillion corrupt oil contracts as well as the alleged stealing of N1.1 trillion worth of crude oil, all in a sector under his direct purview as minister of Petroleum. “We also demand for an open investigation into the N18 billion Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) intervention fund and the N10 billion National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) alleged to have been stolen from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) by APC officials and Presidency cabal.” The PDP also urged Nigerians to note “the colossal corruption under President Buhari’s watch and hold him directly responsible for all the calamities that have befallen our nation in the last three years.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/pdp-demands-adeosuns-sack-over-alleged.html

Uche Secondus, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says his party is set to regain its lost crown as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has “broken into two”. While addressing a crowd at the flag presentation rally for Kolapo Olusola, PDP’s governorship candidate in the July 14 election in Ekiti, Secondus urged voters to reject Kayode Fayemi, APC candidate, whom he said is unsure of the faction he belongs. “APC is broken into two,” he said. “Can you ask Fayemi under which of the factions is he contesting? Because the broom has scattered, the broom has broken.” Secondus, who was at the rally with members of his national working committee, said the PDP has been repositioned to take power, starting from Ekiti in 2019. “Standing here is the rescue team,” he said. “PDP will rescue Nigeria from economic collapse, security collapse, and all sorts of inhuman treatments meted out by the APC government.” He also blamed Buhari for the recent killings, especially in the northern part of the country. “As you can see, killing going on in all the states, especially Zamfara, Taraba, Benue and the Plateau. How long can you kill our people?” he asked. “This country is experiencing civil war because of the killings, and Buhari and APC is behind it. And by the grace of God, PDP will rescue this country from the hands of APC. They are planning to arrest our leaders, we refused to be intimidated.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/the-broom-has-scattered-pdp-chair-uche.html

The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the contract for a 11.9-kilometre link road for the Second Niger Bridge. The road that cut across Anambra and Delta states will gulp N206bn. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Mohammed explained that the contract for the link road also included the provision of associated infrastructure for the bridge. He said the contract was awarded to Julius Berger Plc, which is already working on the project. The minister stated that the Public Private Partnership model adopted for the project by the last administration had failed but that the present government was determined to complete it. He added that the council awarded a contract for the rehabilitation of a road in Enugu State for N11.58bn. According to him, the council also approved contracts for the provision of consultancy services and mining exploration at the cost of N12.7bn. Mohammed added that the FEC ratified a multilateral competent agreement to assist in curbing tax evasion and improve revenue collection. He said the council approved the Africa Project 50th Article of Association with two windows to allow for project finance by the Africa Development Bank as well as the Financial Transparency Policy Guideline memo, which would allow for more transparency on how government revenue were being handled. He explained, “The three memos from the Ministry of Finance that were approved include the ratification of the multilateral competent authority agreement on automatic exchange of financial accounting information, ratification of the Africa 50th Articles of Association and the approval for the financial transparency policy guidelines. “The first memo sought for the ratification of the multilateral competent authority agreement on automatic exchange of financial account information.” Mohammed added, “The memo is going to assist in curbing tax evasion and improve the revenue collection of government. “The Minister of Finance also presented a memo asking for approval for the ratification of the African 50th Articles of Association. This particular memo is unique in the sense that both the African 50th Project Finance and African 50th Project Development Association are actually two windows, which have been created by the African Development Bank to allow for bankable infrastructural projects to be financed by the subsidiaries of the African Development Bank. The memo will take care of certain projects, which cannot be financed simply by the AfDB. “Such projects are to be financed by these two platforms and already, Nigeria is one of the founding members of these two platforms and has invested heavily in them, and the ratification of this treaty has made it possible for Nigeria to take advantage of this.” According to him, the Minister of Finance is seeking the council’s approval for the financial transparency policy guidelines. He stated, “This memo was approved and I think the unique thing about this memo is that it is going to bring more transparency to how government revenue and accounts are being handled. “As a matter of fact, with the approval of this memo, it will now be possible for the public to know exactly how much revenue is collected by the government, how much is being spent just by going on the website of the various ministries, department and agencies.” Mohammed said the council also approved the revised estimated total cost for the engineering, procurement and construction of the OB3 gas pipeline project. He explained, “This is a project that has been awarded but there was a need for the cost of the redesigning to seek for council’s approval so that there will be enough funds to execute the project. “The project is important because it has to do with the delivery of gas from the eastern part of the country to the power turbines to improve our power supply. This contract is awarded to Nestor Limited and Olisa Limited and the total cost of the contract is $92m and N765,968,000,000.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/2nd-niger-bridge-fg-approves-n206bn.html

Members of the Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, accused the executive arm of the government of hiring “protest contractors” in Abuja, to protest against activities of the National Assembly. This was sequel to a motion by Senator Banabas Gemade (Benue North East) on the floor of the Senate at the resumed plenary on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. Gemade had raised a point of order, bringing to notice of the Senate, the protest outside the National Assembly complex, demanding the resignation of the presiding officers of the 8th Assembly over constituency projects. The protesters, mostly women and youths were seen carrying placards with threats and cautions to the National Assembly. Gemade condemned the protest and advised the Executive arm of government to focus on actions that would ensure even distribution of projects. In his contribution, the deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu described the situation as shameful and embarrassing, attributing the protest to poverty and unemployment in the land. His words: “Let me recognize that we have problems and challenges in Nigeria. But I would limit myself to the issue of unemployment and poverty. Rising from this, some people have found a way of surviving. One way of surviving in Abuja is to organise protest. There are people who are considered as protest contractors. “What is happening is that some people go to government officials or governors who they believe are opposed to the National Assembly and collected a N1500 each for number of protesters and when they organize these young people, they pay them only N500 as in the case of today to come and protest in the front of the National Assembly. “So each time I see them, I feel sorry for this country that some people are doing things they do not believe in. the issue of protesting today against constituency projects is to say the least very embarrassing. “I come from a constituency in this country where indeed constituency projects is working and I challenge anybody who says it’s not working to come with any contradiction of what I am saying that constituency projects in my senatorial district has been implemented as allocations were released. There is no abuse whatsoever. I challenge anyone who feels it has been abused to come up with evidence of such. “Any person who is opposed to the projects of our various constituencies, I consider the person as an enemy of the people. I will never for any reason be distracted by this. We should focus and ensure that in any budget that this is provided for because this is the only way we touch the lives of people we represent in this country. “No amount of blackmail or intimidation should stop the implementation of constituency projects, I admit like every other thing in life, it is being abused in some places and by some people but that is not to suggest that the benefits out-numbers some of the issues we have raised. “If anybody has any particular evidence of the abuse of constituency projects, the senate and indeed the National Assembly is prepared to deal with it. But to say that constituency projects should be discontinued, I believe that is the height of insensitivity to the part of our people. So whoever is collecting money to come to the National Assembly to come and oppose the issue of constituency projects that is not going to happen”. On his part, Senator Attai Aidoko (Kogi East), said such “paid” protests cost at least N10 million to organise. He urged the executive to double the funds for constituency projects in the country. Senator Hamman Isah Misau (Bauchi Central), while contributing, accused the executive of sponsoring the protest against the National Assembly. He said, “this demonstration you are seeing outside is organised by a serving Minister and a sitting Governor. These two people are trying to paint the image of the National Assembly black. They are doing this because there are certain people in the National Assembly they want to bring down. “I don’t know if the people close to the President are advising him. These people when the President was away on medical issues, these same people were canvassing for President and Vice-president and the people close to the President are aware of this. “I remember when the President was away for more than 100 days, the civil society organisation, and media were pushing the National Assembly to form a medical team and make the President’s seat vacant so that they will be change of government. “The National Assembly under the leadership of Mr President (Saraki) and the Speaker, you people stood firm and defended the President when he was not strong. Today, ironically, the same people are the people, close to the President, that Mr president is taking more seriously than the Senate President and the Speaker. “A lot of money was to be used on the National Assembly to declare that seat vacant. These same people looking for the seat of Mr President are now the good boys around the president. The people that want to bring you down”. After much deliberations in condemning the perceived sponsored protests against the National Assembly, the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, urged the protesters to channel their grievances to the Executive that orders the release of funds. Saraki noted that, in some communities in the country, constituency projects are the only ways through which the impact of governance is felt by Nigerians. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/executive-using-jobless-youths-to.html

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari has credited frailty and killings in the nation to degenerate government officials. He said that the lawmakers included were the individuals who never again approached plunder open treasury. NAN reports that Shehu made this known on Monday while talking with newsmen. Shehu said such government officials were keen on removing the sparkle from the Buhari-drove organization. "The opposition for control has turned out to be fiercer in light of the fact that the stakes are high," he said. As indicated by Shehu, Buhari was being assaulted particularly in light of the fact that he had released on the nation, a war against defilement. This, he stated, had never been so in the nation, as access to open treasury for plundering had been blocked. The associate, in any case, said that the president was fortunate in light of the fact that he had a legal which was changing itself and was in agreement with him in battling debasement. "As I address you now, two previous state governors are in prison; many individuals felt that this war against defilement is a joke and that the forward and backward that had described this after some time, will proceed. "One of the two cases was resolved following 11 long stretches of forward and backward amongst legal counselors and Judges, kicking the ball from this court to that court. "A ton of these unforgiving assaults against the president are originating from individuals who had turned out to be utilized to way of life they can't support. "On record, there were individuals in this nation, since they are compelling, they had changeless suite in real lodgings in Abuja where they leave richly at open cost. "What's more, when they are leaving, they are went with packs of Ghana-Must-Go," he said. Shehu included that the president had blocked access to national assets for languid individuals, legislators, particularly the individuals who were battling back, on the grounds that they were not glad. He said that the Buhari-drove Federal Government was building framework the nation over. As per him, there is no state in the nation where at least two government streets are not being recently built or reproduced. "We have greater power that can't be devoured, 2,000 megawatts of power that no one is taking. "Continuously finishing, we will hit 10,000 megawatts from the 2,600 that we acquired," he stated, including that administration's concern was the manner by which to deal and disperse power to the individuals who required it. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/administration-distinguishes-genuine.html

Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has again raised the alarm that the flag bearer of All Progressive Congress (APC), John Kayode Fayemi has hired four top officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from the headquarters in Abuja, to manipulate the July 14 poll to favour the APC. He also alleged that the Federal Government had been delaying allocations to states in the federation because of the July 14 poll in Ekiti, with a view to insigating workers in the state against his government. Speaking categorically on a live state Radio and Television broadcast in Ado Ekiti, state capital, on Sarurday night, the governor gave the names of the four INEC officials as Pasca Ukenwa, Deputy Director, ICT, Abdulrasak Agboola, also Deputy Director, ICT, Kenneth Ukeagu, Procurement Officer, and INEC Commissioner, Amina Zakari. He said, “I am still raising the alarm again of the plan of three Abuja senior officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); Pasca Ukenwa, Deputy Director, ICT, Abdulrasak Agboola, also Deputy Director, ICT, and Kenneth Ukeagu, Procurement Officer of INEC, they are working with Fayemi in a desperate plan to rig the July 14 governorship poll in Ekiti. Ukaegu is planning to get ballot papers for Fayemi while the ICT directors are planning to reload card readers for Fayemi. “Ukeagu is assuring Fayemi that if he can reload the card readers, he would get the ballot papers for them. The three INEC officers are all working with Amina Zakari, another big shot of INEC in Abuja. Zakari was the one Anambra rejected with a claim that she would rig the last Anambra election in the state. Zakari is a professional rigger and I have no apology for that statement. “All the APC plans to do is to rig the election but we will reject that. They got into power at the federal level because the process was transparent. I have told INEC not to rig for me because the people of Ekiti are solidly behind our candidate. “We know all about the plans of APC and all the movements of everyone working with him to manipulate the electoral process. Part of their plan to stuff their pockets with ballot papers when coming to vote. I urge Ekiti people, don’t go away once you have voted, stay with your votes. They have also brought thugs in all the hotels, but we know where they are and they can’t do anything.” “The Federal Government has refused to share the allocation. They decided to delay so that workers in Ekiti would be angry with Fayose. They held a meeting last week Saturday and decided to delay the allocation so that workers won’t get salaries until after July 14 poll. They are owing me two budget support. “They delayed the salaries of the workers across the nation because of Ekiti. Is that a government that loves the masses?” The governor also took a critical swipe at Fayemi, alleging that the state has not benefited anything from the ex-minister’s appointment into the federal government cabinet. “If Fayemi were to be governor he wouldn’t have been able to fight against Fulani herdsmen in Ekiti the way I had done because he would be afraid of Buhari. “Tinubu said Fayemi is Buhari’s friend but is Bubari coming to rule Ekiti? A Buhari’s friend cannot tackle herdsmen menace because Buhari’s himself has failed to deal with the challenge at the national level. “For Fayemi to have condemned the success of our students in NECO exams is bad. He said that our children who came tops in exams had had their exam answers bought for them is appalling and an height of reckless statement. “Fayemi is coming with bitterness to come and devour and destroy all of you. I know what I am saying. I have served you before and I am still serving you and you can know the difference,” he said. Speaking further about the July 14 poll, he said: “The power of the people is greater than those of us in power, peoples’ might is greater than federal might. Anything that does not represent the truth in this poll will fail. “The opposition are fighting God and they will fail. We will beat APC 16 :0 again. There will be a mother of all rallies on Thursday, July, 5 where the PDP flag will be given to our candidate, Olusola Kolapo Eleka. There will also be victory walk where all of us will wear white, and walk through the state capital praising God and thanking him for victory over our enemies.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/ekiti-guber-fayemi-has-hired-four-top.html

The Chairman of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Alhaji Abdullahi Bodejo, has declared that land all over Nigeria belong to the Fulani. According to him, those claiming to owe land and would not release it to government for ranching were being selfish and do not want peace in the land. He told Sun that his group was supporting the establishment of ranches 100 per cent, disclosing that, “it is because there are no ranches that some Fulani elements from other states are opposed to anti-grazing law. “But with the intervention of the Federal Government, Fulani can now confine their grazing activities to a particular area. “They are raising opposition to it because the President of the federation is a Fulani man. I don’t know the basis of the opposition, but those people who are opposed to it are enemies of the Fulani. They are trying to gang up against the Fulani because of their personal interests. “Is it not a good idea to also settle the Fulani? This will be a solution to the herders-farmers’ conflicts Insha Allah. “If we close all the cattle markets in this country, the economy will come down. Take the case of Lagos where they slaughter almost 6000 cows per day; go and ask the governor how much revenue they are raking from there. For almost 60 years, Fulani have not gained anything from government. “Some people are just bent on destroying the Fulani economy. “As far as I am concerned, they have no reason for opposing creation of ranches. It is just a demonstration of their hatred against the Fulani. “Everybody has a right to his opinion but the hatred is too much for us. Let us have a rethink and build Nigeria together.” Speaking on the fact that many states were reluctant to donate land for ranches because they don’t want to regret it in the end, Bodejo declared, “The day those people were born, were they born with the land? The people who are claiming land are the ones causing crisis in this country. If Fulani have the culture of staying in one place, do you think anybody can claim land more than Fulani? “If you don’t know, land all over Nigeria belongs to the Fulani. But the only thing is that we don’t have business to do with the land.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/07/plateau-killing-why-land-all-over.html

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Friday revealed when the shut Bodija market will be re-opened. The market, DAILY POST recalls was shut Thursday afternoon after a clash reported to have claimed lives of about six people occurred between butchers and policemen Thursday morning. But, Ajimobi while speaking when he visited the market Friday afternoon declared that the market can be reopened within twenty-four hours. Ajimobi, however, said such would be done after due consultation with the security agencies, community and market leaders and the leaders of the local government area. He added that perpetrators of the clash will be prosecuted and made to rehabilitate the burnt police station. He reiterated that his administration will not tolerate hooliganism, thuggery, saying that government will not fold its hands and allow some dissidents to destroy its seven years labour of restoring peace and safety in the state. He maintained that only an enemy of development will condemn the action of the government to relocate the butchers to the central abattoir, explaining that the management of the Central Abattoir is being handled by the 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Ibadan and its Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), the National Butchers Union of Nigeria (NUBN), the Oyo State Government on Public Private Partnership arrangement. He said, “We are talking about the general health of the people and not just the minute section in the market as every citizen of the state has one or two things to do with the Bodija Market. The decision to have a central abattoir for the Ibadan butchers predated my administration and we saw the need to relocate the butchers as well. We started discussing with them since five years ago before we eventually relocated them this year. “We had series of stakeholders’ meeting and signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the smooth relocation. All parties agreed to our resolutions and that is why I am surprised that we still have dissidents fomenting trouble. We are always in the habit of politicizing issues in the state. Majority of the butchers have moved and we have received commendations from their union, National Union of Butchers of Nigeria. “Let me assure you that the perpetrators of this violence will not go unpunished and they will rehabilitate the police station. People must be allowed to pay for their deeds. We did not destroy anybody’s stall or shop. Or is there any crime in destroying what is not useful for the government again? We have not stopped them from selling meat at the Bodija market but no more slaughtering of cow there due to the poor hygienic condition. There was also resistance when butchers were moved from Gege to Bodija, so the resistance is not new but the crisis and violence were unnecessary. “We are working at reopening the market at the earliest possible time as we do not want to deprive our people their means of livelihood. But, we must be assured that adequate measures are put in place to forestall a repeat of the crisis. We may likely open the market in the next 48 hours”. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/ajimobi-reveals-when-shut-bodija-market.html

As a way of curbing the menace of human trafficking, the Nigerian government has announced plans to introduce Trafficking in Persons, TIP, into the curricula of basic and secondary schools across the country. It has in preparation for this organised a two-day sensitisation and advocacy workshop for publishers and authors by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP. The seminar, which has kicked off in Lagos, is for the stakeholders to provide needed textbooks and other learning materials to compliment Federal Government’s effort. Delivering a welcome address, Director-General of NAPTIP, Dame Julie Okah-Donli, explained that the essence of mainstreaming TIP issues into the curricula was to deepen the prevention aspect of the agency’s work. She said with the knowledge of TIP issues and related crimes at an early age, it will be difficult for pupils and students to fall prey to traffickers and, by extension, make them vanguards against TIP. She said: “It is our conviction that we cannot win this battle alone without the collective support of the various stakeholders, including children, who are usually the target.” Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, Prof. Ismail Junaidu, described human trafficking as modern day slavery, saying the need to eradicate human trafficking led to the infusion of TIP issues into schools’ curriculum. On his part, National Programme Officer, International Centre for Migration Policy Development, ICMPD, Mrs Amala Obiokoye-Nwalor, said the workshop was necessary for the roll-out of the curriculum. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/nigerian-govt-infuses-trafficking-in.html

Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana(SAN), yesterday, urged the Plateau State governor to order for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the murder of over 86 people in Razak, Ruku, Nyarr, Kura and Gana-Ropp villages of Gashi District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. Falana in a statement said that should the government fail to take appropriate action to stop the killings in Plateau “we shall not hesitate to report the authorities of the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government to the Special Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for condoning crimes against humanity and genocide.” He said: “We wish to sympathise with the government and people of Plateau over the reckless and cold murder of 86 unarmed people in Razak, Ruku, Nyarr, Kura and Gana-Ropp villages of Gashi District in Barkin Ladi Local Government. “While appreciating the measures adopted by Your Excellency to restore law and order in the affected local government, it is high time that the brazen impunity of the serial murderers in Plateau State was challenged by the state government. “Otherwise, the reckless killing of unarmed citizens by criminal gangs will continue unabated. “Since a group has already claimed responsibility for the heinous crime, we are compelled to request Your Excellency to use your good offices to order the Police to arrest and investigate the suspects. “At the end of the investigation, the Attorney-General of Plateau State should be directed to prosecute the suspects for conspiracy and culpable homicide.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/plateau-killings-falana-reveals-what-he.html

A former deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Timi Frank, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign from office. The APC chieftain said this in reaction to the recent killing of about 100 people in Plateau state over the weekend by suspected Fulani herdsmen. Frank called on the President to urgently put an end to the frequent killings of Nigerians in the recent times, especially in the North-central part of the country. This was as he urged all Nigerians and Civil Society Organizations to be ready to hit the ground running in the mission to salvage Nigeria from the current administration. In open letter to the President on Tuesday, entitled, “stop the killings or resign now,” Frank, said, “It is high time the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Trade Union Congress, TUC, Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers, NUPENG, Petroleum and Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, and all well meaning Nigerians, wake up and defend the people because we don’t have any other country we can call our own.” “The entire North Central has become a killing field with the lives of Nigerians being lackadaisically wasted without the security forces accepting the challenge to stop what now amounts to ethnic cleansing. “Nigerians have continued to die in their hundreds despite yearly increases in defence and security budgets and other extra budgetary allocations, the recent being $1billion withdrawn from the excess crude account by this administration. Notwithstanding, the security agencies have failed to protect Nigerians while it does appear that the more huge money is expended on security, the more deaths we procure. “Mr. President, may I remind you that one major plank of your electioneering campaign was the promise to personally lead Nigerian troops to dislodge and destroy Boko Haram and restore full security to all parts of the country. Regrettably, Nigerians have not seen you do that in the last three years. However, the increasing ferocious mass murder being carried out by Fulani herdsmen has made the Boko Haram insurgency seems like a child’s play. “May I remind you that in Washington D.C you told President Donald Trump that the merciless killers were trained by Moumar Gadafi of Libya? In another breadth, your Minister of Defence, said the killings can only stop when the open grazing laws enacted in Benue and Taraba states are repealed. “Tell me, is there any open grazing law in Plateau and Zamfara States? Besides, you have refused to declare the killer Fulani herdsmen as a terrorist organization because of your soft spot for them, which is contrary to the haste with which the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) – a group of agitators that never engaged in any bloodshed – was branded a terrorist organization and outlawed.” Frank said the country cannot afford to wait and watch helplessly as innocent Nigerian lives are being wasted by murderous terrorists, allegedly operating as herdsmen. “The time to rise up to defend our country and our people, by speaking up, is now! The ongoing pogrom in Plateau, Taraba, Benue, Kogi, Zamfara, Adamawa, Kaduna and other states must stop! Nigerians must demand for a new leadership that can guarantee their safety and welfare. Clearly, the present administration has failed in its responsibilities to protect the people. This deadly criminal gang that is killing, maiming and cutting short the lives of our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and children must be stopped now, otherwise, Nigeria may soon stop to exist as a country,” he said. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/plateau-killings-resign-now-youve.html

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, legal luminaries of Nsukka extraction have vowed to mobilize support for the re-election of Governor Ifeanyi of Enugu State. Leading in the struggle is Barr. Maximus Ugwuoke, who made the disclosure during a meeting of the group, under the aegis of Nsukka Zonal Lawyers’ Forum. Ugwuoke, a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, House of Representatives aspirant for Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, said 300 lawyers from the area were being mobilized for the project. While describing Ugwuanyi as “a great achiever of our time”, Ugwuoke said “we are set for a solidarity rally for the Governor, our own son, who has made us proud.” “The grand rally is in support of the Governor’s vision and a way of not only appreciating what he has achieved so far, but also to ensure his reelection. “I am asking all Nsukka lawyers to identify with this project. We have to stop political detractors who may hide under any guise to subvert the good plans of the Governor,” he added. He had also at the meeting informed his colleagues of his desire to represent his constituency at the House of Representatives, recalling the massive support he got from the forum when he contested about five years ago as an executive member of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Enugu branch, which ensured his victory. He said he had decided to come to them for the support as they were “indeed very dependable, you are formidable ally in this project.” Ugwuoke declared that his ambition “is not grounded on self aggrandizement and selfishness but borne out of burning zeal to serve.” “My passion, my decision to contest is driven by a vision to deliver the goods of quality representation and make a difference. I do not believe in a politics of personal criticism but rather I believe in issue-based politics. I have a vision to deliver and challenge other aspirants to the office to lay their visions bare for the people’s assessment,” he said. He further disclosed that he would have ordinarily liked to consult every member of the Lawyer’s Forum individually but that time may not permit. “Though most of you may not participate in the primaries but you have your contacts and networks which you can utilize to make things happen positively,” he said. “Since this house had supported me and given me victory in the past, it is right, proper and correct to inform you of my intention to contest the election to the House of Representatives for the Nsukka –Igboeze South constituency. I am a lawyer of Nsukka extraction and a proud Nsukka lawyer at that and I pledge to live up to the billing,” he stated. Responding, the chairman of the Nsukka Zonal Lawyer’s Forum, Barr Alphonsus Ugwuafia commended Ugwuoke for his decision and described his cause as synonymous with that of every Nsukka lawyer and wished him success. The chairman counseled him to go on with consultations and assured him of their support and votes once he gets his party’s nod. Other speakers concurred with the chairman and urged Ugwuoke to bring to bear his experiences, connections and contacts in his pursuit so as to ensure that he got his party’s mandate. They also lauded his decision to run an issue-based campaign without rancor or mudslinging. They expressed the hope that he will sail through and wished him a successful outing through the PDP platform, which they agreed was a sure bet in the State. The meeting was attended by about 100 members of the forum, including the likes of Professor Frank Asogwa, Former Enugu Commissioner and Dean of Faculty of Law Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Barr Okey Ani, former commissioner for Local Government Enugu State, Barr Pascal Okaloagu, Barr Chuka Ezike, Director of Public Prosecution and a host of others. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/2019-nsukka-lawyers-mobilize-for.html

The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has thrown his support behind a former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomole, to succeed as national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC. Oshiomhole, would emerge as the party’s leader barring any unforeseen circumstance today, after Clement Ebri, his major contender withdrew from the race some days ago. Sani in a statement issued on Saturday, criticised the outgoing chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun for his poor leadership, describing his party in its present form as ‘unruly” with a broom unable to clean the political space. He, however, expressed optimism that Oshiomole, unlike Oyegun would lead the party into a desired future. “In the last three years under Oyegun, APC oscillate between Libya, Syria and Yemen situations. “In the last three years, APC’s broom was stained by the feaces of inequities and glued by the mucus of injustices. “In the last three years, APC became an unruly ruling party presiding over ruins of its sub chapters. “Chief Oyegun is leaving behind an APC that he fashioned and erected on a heap of fraudulent congresses, cold war and civil war. Chief Oyegun is leaving behind hatchets buried with leaves. Chief Oyegun is literally leaving behind grenades covered with flowers of which Comrade Adams must detonate. “In the last three years under the outgoing leadership of the party, APC’s broom was unable to clean the political space and even itself but rather became part of the nation’s refuse and sewage waste. “I believe Comrade Adams can take the party out of the woods and lead it to a new path and a new future. However, I advise that Adams must resist the blackmail and the stranglehold of the Lucifers within the party,” he said. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/how-oyegun-ruined-apc-oshiomole-must.html

The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah, has advised the federal government of Nigeria to change its tactics in the anti-corruption fight against looters. Kukah said the government should negotiate with looters of the nation’s treasury in order to recover stolen funds. The cleric made this known while speaking at the 29th and 30th Convocation lecture of the University of Jos on Friday. Bishop Kukah explained that some countries had negotiated with corrupt officials to recover stolen funds and it worked for them, hence calling on Nigerian government to adopt the same tactic. According to him “Fighting corruption as a whole is beyond just recovering stolen funds, although it is necessary to punish treasury looters and corrupt officials, to solve the whole problem would involve tackling it from the roots and that means the institutional framework. “Investigate what they have stolen, then call them and negotiate how much of it can be recovered, while you put frameworks in place to holistically solve the problem. “Corruption is not only a Nigerian thing. Former presidents of nations like America, France, Israel, South Africa, among others, have been removed due to corruption charges. Yet, their countries are working.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/corruption-negotiate-with-looters.html

A group of Christians under the aegis of National Christian Elders Forum, NCEF, being championed by a former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), and Solomon Asemota (SAN), has warned that Christianity in Nigeria may cease to exist in 25 years from now. Danjuma’s group said that the present generation of Christians may be the last set in Nigeria. With this, NCEF demanded the restructuring of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, before the 2019 general elections. They warned that if the current faulty structure would be carried into 2019, it might be too late to preserve Christianity in Nigeria. The Secretary of NCEF, Bosun Emmanuel, expressed these fears in his paper entitled, “Impact of lack of unity in CAN as threat to Christian faith”, delivered during the annual conference of Catholic Men’s Guild, held at the Catholic Church of Assumption, Ikoyi in Lagos. According to them, the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in Nigeria “is openly pursuing an anti-Christian agenda that has resulted in countless murders of Christians all over the nation and destruction of vulnerable Christian communities.” NCEF said, “Due to the inability of CAN to forge Christians into one indivisible army of the Lord, the Church has been weakened and unable to stand before its enemies. Realistically speaking, Christianity is on the brink of extinction in Nigeria. The ascendancy of Sharia ideology in Nigeria rings the death toll for the Nigerian Church. “It is therefore imperative that CAN must be restructured, as a matter of urgency, if Christianity is to survive. CAN belongs to every Christian in Nigeria and there is nothing wrong with the association. It is the management that should be revisited and restructured.” He added, “The Catholic Church should be prepared to return completely into the fold of CAN and participate fully in providing leadership in these troublous times. God warned in 2013 that we were not careful, in 30 to 40 years, Nigeria would be like Turkey. “In 2018, we can say in 25 years from now, we are facing the risk of being the last Christians in Nigeria. Therefore, Christians should be in the frontline of defending democracy in Nigeria. The Church is the bastion of democracy. A divided CAN cannot defend democracy and promote justice, equity, and fairness. Consequently, Sharia will grow stronger. As Sharia grows stronger, democracy will become weaker and the Church will be emasculated out of existence. “The current Federal Government in Nigeria is openly pursuing an anti-Christian agenda that has resulted in countless murders of Christians all over the nation and destruction of vulnerable Christian communities. Just recently, Elder Statesman, Gen. T. Y. Danjuma raised the alarm that Christians should take steps to defend themselves.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/therell-be-no-christians-in-nigeria-in.html

Ex-militant leaders from the Niger Delta under the first phase of the Presidential Amnesty programme have thrown their weight behind the leadership of Professor Charles Dokubo as the coordinator of the programme. According to the ex-militant leaders, their decision to pass a vote of confidence in Dokubo was based on his new style of leadership that has injected a new life into the Amnesty programme. The former militant leaders, made up of Ezekiel Akpasbowei, Henry Benedodoghe, Gravilla Egbela, Franklin Duduku, Igwu Emeka and Nico Sintei, Chief Omoh Tonwerighe and Andrew Voko, made this known after an enlarged meeting. A statement made available to The Guardian after their meeting which was held at the Resident of ‘General’ Pastor Reuben, however called on him to reconsider the decision on the recall of scholarship beneficiaries under the programme back home in Nigeria. It said, “the decision should be rescinded and the Amnesty should accommodate all students, because they are all from Niger Delta regardless of the suspicion on whether they were smuggled into the scheme.” The ex-militants also want the coordinator to have a listening hear to the voices of leaders of militants on best way to handle issues of Amnesty programmes by showing care to the leaders especially on their welfare. While vowing to give him their full support to excel in the set mandate of the programme, they urged him to intervene and prevail on the Niger Delta Development Commission and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to assist in the needed development of the region. It reads further, “Our people in the region are law abiding people and have resolved to shun violence that are inimical to the growth of the region. And we urge politicians to desist from igniting the region and halt it’s economic activities.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/ex-militant-leaders-pass-vote-of.html

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has urged the management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) to cooperate with law enforcement authorities in the prosecution of dismissed lecturer, Professor Richard Akindele involved in sexual harassment. Babatunde Irukera, the Director-General of CPC, made the appeal in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja. DAILY POST reports that the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife sacked Professor Richard Akindele for allegedly demanding sex from Monica Osagie to upgrade her mark. Irukera, speaking on the university’s decision, said that this would serve as a deterrent to the pervasive pattern of behaviour on many campuses. “In addition, and as a further deterrent, OAU and other learning institutions should commit to eradicating sexual harassment by establishing or institutionalising effective redress mechanisms. “This should include secure whistle-blowing opportunities for such cases, to protect both students and faculty,” Irukera said. The director-general also reiterated the need to address sexual harassment in institutions. This, he said, would provide safe and liberal environments for students and ensure that the relationship between faculty and students. “Both the approach of OAU and the outcome of its investigation convey the institution’s intolerance for despicable behaviour. “The action would inspire confidence that going forward, such allegations would be thoroughly investigated, and when established, penalised to the full extent of the law. “This exemplary response by OAU sets the standard and sends the appropriate message to other institutions, that learning and scholastic communities must be devoid of unacceptable behaviour, and that when such occurs, it will not be without consequence,” he added. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/sex-for-mark-cpc-applauds-oau-over.html

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed reports that the campaigns for the election into its executive committee have been a source of distraction to the Super Eagles at the FIFA World Cup in Russia. The federation’s first Vice President, Barr Seyi Akinwunmi, told journalists in St Petersburg that “We are not here for NFF election and I am of the opinion that this NFF election be moved from World Cup year, because everybody mixes both, and it should not be. We are here specifically for the World Cup. “Please, let us concentrate on giving our team the total support because they are in need of it. When we finish, we will go back home to face the election. We will not do the election in Russia. “The election will come and go, but what we are here for is the biggest football competition in the circle of football unions. I think we should focus on it. “We are going to have our report after the World Cup, and that will cover everything that happened here, maybe that would settle everything that would be done in Nigerian football after the championship. “People must air their views of being able to do different things in situations like this. I am sure all of us here can see things differently, that is a normal human reaction. The fact that you are a board member does not make you different from other Nigerians in football.” “I may have my own views as an individual, as far as football is concerned, but at the end of the day, we are a board and we are responsible for the team. In terms of campaigning, nobody campaigned to me as a delegate. I do not know where the issue of campaigning came in,” he said. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/world-cup-2018-nff-speaks-on.html

Lagos State Government on Tuesday announced it had abolished promotion of civil servants based on career progression to ensure efficient service delivery. Head of Service, Folasade Adesoye, made the disclosure at a news conference in Lagos to announce activities marking this year’s public service week. Mrs Adesoye said: “To this extent, all government officers now have clearly defined job schedules against which their performances will be assessed. “This approach is based on the perception that governance must be open, timely, effective and efficient.” She noted that the public service week, which holds from June 19 to June 25, was introduced in 1994, following the resolution of the Conference of African Ministers of Civil Service. According to her, African countries set aside June 23 as the Public Service Day to recognise the value of service to humanity. The HoS revealed that some of the activities to celebrate the week would include a parade and exhibition by ministries departments and agencies, and visit to charity homes, orphanages, old peoples’ home and rehabilitation centres. She said that games such as ‘Ayo’, Draughts, and Ludo would feature, besides singing and other forms of entertainment such as mock news presentation, stand-up comedy, mimicking of personalities and display of skills and dexterity in local drumming. Mrs Adesoye said that the state government had set up stands where medical screening for ailments such as hypertension, cervical/breast and prostate cancers, diabetes and hepatitis would be conducted. “The screening will be performed free; specialists will be on ground to provide advice on health-related issues,” she added. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/lagos-stops-promotion-based-on-career.html
