percipi1: It is apparent that Nairaland has been taken over by ethnic bigots. And this is affecting lots of people who live about ethnic divides to the extent that some had to leave. A lot even confessed that it has affected their disposition to people of other ethnic group simply because of what goes on here.

To help clean up this medium of ethnic bigots, i have devised 7 rules to stay clear of bigots. They are as:

1. You must remember that everybody on nairaland is inconsequential because none of them is yet to identify themselves by their real name

2 You must remember that the contributors on nairaland represent an inconsequential fraction of Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities



3. You must keep your cool whenever you read anything derogatory regarding your ethnic group. Always remember that the writer is not a person of consequence.

4. You must respond only to people who have history of addressing issues.

5. You must never use derogatory word against anybody or their ethnic group.

6. If an ethnic bigot responds or tries to engage you in a discourse, do not oblige him/her.

7. Always stay focus on the topic and if you are angry with what others are saying, simply move on, you are walking away from nobodies, remember.

Honestly, sometimes I want to hide my face in shame about this embarrassment on NL. Sometimes I wish this forum was an intranet and not internet. I wish people outside Nigeria do not have access to this stockpile of national slurry.
Among my fellow Igbos I notice sometimes an overly magnified sense of pride and self-making. This 'Pride' gets the other Yoruba guy infuriated and he uses the most fiery words to teach him humility (as it is one of the cardinal virtues for Yorubas). The Igbo returns those firewords with his own and the heat starts. Before you know it an important discuss is ruined

Am only concerned about what Buhari is doing to those who support him but are now on the other flank in this smoldering nationla issue. At least for their sake he should sound less uncanny and represensible and disagreeable. He's bring them so much embarassment by statements like this. Fellow compatriots, what's the fuss about King of African Literature or not. This is a mere public acclamation and not a laurel! I want to bet that if the dead hear or see Chinua will be laughing by now. He made IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR while still alive that he's not ruled by this kind of trivialities we're disagreeing about. Am not a military strategist. But if in the wisdom of the experts who render advice to Mr President they deem this move fit, appropriate and timely, then may their hope be blessed by Providence.
This whole mess is as a result of the northern insistence on power and dominance but by allowing this to spill to this level I think they shot themselves and their inordinate ambition on the foot.
If GEJ ever wins in this battle and restores considerable peace in this region, he has automatically won the love (and perhaps votes) of the locales there. And then the real bull's eye would be lost by those who brought us to this mess.
However, I'd simply pray, God help our Leaders to bring us to Peace, prosperity and Righteousness. Amen

THE MANY SINS OF JONATHAN
Never in Nigerian history has a sitting President or Head of State, or even a Governor ever received so much derision, derogation and name-calling as the current President Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ). It is a very misleading incongruent and irreconcilable blend of both vilifications cum glorification that the name of the president often experience whenever it is mentioned in a public political discourse. Those who vilify him call him all sorts of unprintable names like ‘clueless’, ‘retard’, ‘visionless’, ‘weak’, ‘tactless’, etc. They allege that Mr President does not respect his own promises even when he’d made them openly to the public—not talk of some purported ‘gentleman’s agreements.’ This category of citizens says he’s the worst performing Nigerian president. They say that he’s underperformed to the most mortifying low ebbs. They say that the president upon assumption of office had promised Nigerians to not only fight corruption but also to initiate institutional reforms to plug the loopholes from which corrupt officials find the act so easy. But this promise was raped recently by the declaration of a state pardon to a former boss of his Mr Alamieyesiegha Diepreye. This he did through the instrumentality of the Council of State made up of more individuals that he alone—including stocks and scions from the oppositions.
The country’s major opposition political parties are the Congress for Progressive Change CPC (strong mostly in the Muslim north), All Nigerian Peoples’ Party ANPP (strong mostly in the Muslim north), Action Congress of Nigeria ACN (strong mostly in the South west), and the All Progressives’ Grand Alliance APGA (with fair presence in the South east). There’s also Labour Party LP and Democratic Peoples’ Party DPP, among others. The first three mentioned are at the final stages of arrangements to form a mega merger party. This opposition, especially those in the north and south west have exhibited frontal opposition against the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party PDP at the centre. But what are the sins of this man at the centre? Firstly, it was a very on smouldering and sweltering disagreement between the president and some religious and political leaders of the Muslim north right from the period the ill-health of former president Umaru Musa Yar’adua under whom GEJ had served as vice president worsened. From about November 2009 when the late president took serious illness, the fear of the southern (Niger/Delta) vice president succeeding the late president caused a frightening wrangling and so much loss of love between the north and parts of the south, especially the South/south and South/east. This situation was worsened when after serving out the Yar’adua/Jonathan joint ticket Jonathan indicated another interest to run for the presidency, defying an alleged zoning ‘gentleman’s arrangement’ in the ruling PDP. This was GEJ’s first unforgivable sin. He was seen as an avaricious betrayer, impatient, and inconsistent and inconstant. This caused some northern elders and leaders to threaten to make the nation ungovernable for GEJ should he eventually emerge president from the poll. And very true to this promise, from the very moment the results of the presidential polls started suggesting that GEJ was winning heavy violence erupted in several parts of the north claiming several lives including Youth Corps members. Up until this moment, this violence seems not to be abating.
It was widely speculated that as soon as GEJ assumed full control of the presidency, an alleged petrol tank farm in Kaduna (North/east) where large volumes of products have been hoarded by the northern feudal elites for several years was opened by the federal government for public use. This definitely received the anger of the north with the apprehension that this was leading to disempowerment of the wealth of the north. Another undercurrent was the discontinuation by the federal government to pay emoluments to religious and traditional leaders in the north which they hitherto exclusively and unobstructed- ly enjoyed. The presidency had argued that if religious and traditional leaders in the north should receive federal govt stipends so such those in the south. But since the govt cannot afford such huge wage bill it had to completely exorcise itself of that evil possession. The South west which is a mix of both Muslim and Christian natives also became victims of this reversal. It is important to note however that the key Leaders of the three major opposition parties are all Muslims. Also, the presidency’s insistence on the Petroleum Industry Bill PIB is a major headache to the north and South/west which have been said to control 83% stake of the oil blocs in the Niger Delta. The passage of the Bill will lead to the loss of a lot of petrodollars to these oil bloc owners. Hence, the inexplicable terrible delay the Bill has suffered in the national assembly.
At the dawn of January 1, 2012 the presidency announced the total removal of subsidy on petrol in the country. This announcement stroked up public disquiet never witnessed since the full return of democracy in the country in 1999. Although the many public and private, formal and informal debates on the issue before and after the announcement have suggested that most Nigerians agree that fuel subsidy with all the corruption that have wrought it must go if the petroleum sector must grow. But the problem is when? How? And who would remove it. Govt officials have strongly accused ‘rogue’ oil marketers for being responsible for the large scale protest in most parts of kano, Abuja, Kaduna (north), and Lagos (South west). Though there were pockets of protests in some parts of South/south and South/east, where about 95% of the oil is produced, all of them put together can’t compare to any single of the former.
The presidency and the PDP have been accused of trying to muscle and muzzle the planned merger of opposition political parties against the 2015 General elections. As at today, the acronym APC toasted by the opposition is still a matter of litigation, and by Law the election regulating body cannot register the merger with the disputed acronym until the courts say who the real owners of the acronym is. All Peoples’ Congress has dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to court for its refusal to register the group with the name and acronym. The opposition merger All Progressives’ Congress says the ruling PDP is afraid of the mammoth crowd behind the proposed merger and is doing everything to frustrate the fusion. One would wonder why the president would want to do that. Opposition says that it’s because he has another presidential ambition. That leads us to another sin of GEJ.
Jonathan had promised Nigerians that he’d be running for a single four year term, after that step down. Jonathan despite all attempts to make him come straight has chosen to keep all Nigerians under the blanket of their uncertainty as to whether or not he’ll contest in the 2015 election. He has not said yes or no in the public
but all his body language seems to suggest clearly that he wants to re-contest for the coveted post. The lingering rift between him and Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state—a Niger/Delta state, in fact the state is the very stock from which Bayelsa the president’s home state was born—has been widely seen as open arm twisting of any perceived competitor from that region. Although the Constitution grants GEJ the right to contest in 2015, the north has handed down several vociferous threats (even war and secession) of the dire consequences of such attempt by GEJ. Recently, the people of the Niger/Delta have equally issued similar ‘reprisal’ threats through the mouths of persons like Kingsley Kuku, Asari Dokubo, and Miss Annkio Briggs. One begins to wonder if these sins are strong enough to deter GEJ from re-contesting. Do these sins amount to underperformance? It thus seems if Jonathan declares an interest Nigeria is in trouble, but it does appears if he’s coaxed into not contesting Nigeria is in perhaps a bigger trouble.
Now, talking about those who glorify GEJ, they insist that GEJ has in about two years outperformed all other past Nigerian presidents and Heads of State. (I wonder if this not rather bourgeois claim). They say that in the course of his electioneering he had promised to build at least 100 Almajiri schools in the north to help push up the region’s match towards literacy and civilization and also to build new federal universities there. Several of such Almajiri schools have become fully operational with full scholarship and free books, uniforms and sandals and schoolbags plus other fringe motivations like Conditional Cash Transfer, feeding. The federal govt in 2013 reduced drastically the examination score requirement for students from educationally backward states in the north seeking admission into federal govt owned secondary (Unity) schools across the nation. In fact, it is zero for candidates from Yobe state. The north is the major food producer of food for Nigeria. He promised agricultural revolution and to dismantle the federal govt tractor and fertilizer purchase and distribution corruption that has bedevilled the sector from time immemorial. The Agric minister Dr Adesina Akinwumi seems to be carrying out this revolution order to the letter. He promised to improve irrigation and to revitalize the dams for both agricultural purpose and hydroelectric production. GEJ supporters are busy photographing pictures of every other progress made these areas and uploading them on all known social networking sites. They also claim that the trains are fully back (my friend had called from Kwara state lately to tell she’ll be travelling from there to Lagos and that it’s cheaper and more fun). I saw the trains last Christmas in Lagos. There are confirmations that the Lagos-Kano corridor is back and running. Though the machines used are said to be antiquated and is time wasting. Pictures of work progress in the Maidugri-Port Harcourt axis fill the internet, as well as that for the City rail for Abuja. I am personally a testifier that federal expressways have improved across the country. I have travelled through more than a lot, even though they are not all perfect examples of a 21 st century Trunk A roads. My friend visited from South Africa last Christmas and travelled across almost the entire length of the country and when we spoke he said that in just few years Nigeria seem to have consulted a better dibia man. He was impressed at the progress made so far and expressed hope.
All standard indices used to measure a nation’s economic growth suggest that Nigeria’s economic growth is a 21 st century wonder, except for GDP per capita
which in fact is the real measure of standard of living. Nigeria’s GDP per capita is a public shame yet to be cleaned up. Unemployment among the 70million youth is put at alarming 40million—this excluding the underemployed. And then adults! Granted that, considering this huge number, it’ll be very difficult to easily notice progress made to reduce this—coupled with population surge. The federal govt YouWIN programme has directly empowered some hundreds of Nigerian youths with innovative businesses with the target that these youths will in turn employ others thereby contributing to the employment milieu. Power (electricity) is about Nigeria’s worst shames both home and abroad. Incidentally, this sector has been variously feed with billions of dollars without any known achievement. The problem almost appears obdurate. Before 2011 records have it that Nigeria could generate only 2500MW of power. Today we hear that it has risen to a measly 4500MW. This is still insufficient for Lagos state alone! The administration seems to be making great commitments towards improving the situation. Building power infrastructure from ground zero does not happen in just a wave of a wand. The country’s airports have received a recognizable face-lift in the past few months. Due to space I’d choose not to roll out all the good these supporters credit to GEJ.
GEJ supporters continue to remind Nigerians and the entire world of the ‘most free, fair, transparent and credible’ elections of 2011 and the others that have followed in some states since thereafter. While I’d admit that it was far better than that of 2007 in a million ways, I’d frankly say that it wasn’t devoid of corrupt practices entirely. At least I witnessed multiple voting in favour of GEJ at the polling centre I was and I quickly registered my disapproval and insisted on discontinuation of that (eheh, opposition has noted that…lol. But omo na die I for die that day oo). One uncommon gift GEJ has given Nigeria is independence of the Judiciary, at least at the federal level, and the big one…freedom of information. Yes, in fact in all its definitions. This freedom has brought him more pain in the butt than anything else perhaps. Unlike with Decree IV of the Buhari’s administration, people openly ask even the most sensitive questions even on public stages and get away with it. People even threaten the person of the president and the presidency with violence. Whatever stops Jonathan from taking these rampant abuses seriously beats the imaginations of many men. Could it be the said freedom of information Act or could it be Jonathan’s personal temperaments. Only a strong babalawo can tell. Yet, there seem to be some little kind of harmony between GEJ and the people in power (I know you want to mention Amaechi, Aliyu, and Lamido): the judiciary, executive, and legislature. Even opposition members and governors are hardly seen publicly disagreeing with this man—unlike during the era of former president Olusegun Obasanjo. Could it be that there’s something these people (opposition legislators, governors and ministers) see that some GEJ haters on the streets do not see? Or could it be that old table manner they taught us while we were growing up—that you don’t talk while (on table) still eating? Maybe only time has the answer.

Let me start on a lighter mood. Our people say, "Ashi kanma na bekee." ( Lies are best said in English Language). Did you notice the very convoluted knitting of bekee in that piece? I had to parse the sentences to ascertain their syntactical/lexical correctness.
Well, I've heard what Lai Mohammed and also Engr Gaidam have said about the SOE and now Bola Tinubu. It does appear these elders are more fixated on 2015 election than on the safety, security and corporate existence of Nigeria and Nigerians! Even the Yobe state governor has commended the president for the decision.
The president was wise enough not to stoke a fume by allowing the elected powers in the areas to remain in accordance with the interpretation of Section 305 of the Constitution (unlike what OBJ did in his time).
It's only a shame that these so-called opposition are making themselves loose street credibility with these luminious but mortifying charade kind of opposition. To be opposition does not mean to be the opposite of sensible reaction/thinking/action.

This is definitely a cheering news. God bless our govt officials and help them to continue to better the lives of her people. Bless all men and women who spend sleepless nights trying to salvage the souls of other men and women.
I insist that Nigerians (especially youths) must take their destinies by their hands. Jump into the stream of job and wealth creation rather than sit ahome in laziness and pessimism and hate.

If this economic integration is an honest one then my soul is already jolly with hope and enthusiasm. This conglomeration is long overdue. I wonder why this region wasted almost eternity in mutual distrust and suspicion. Maybe the evil wind blowing in parts of the country has shown each one who his real friends are.
I have developed a fully documented well tailored and implementable action plan for the fasted development of this region of my birth. If only we'd give it an honest committment for implementation then the picture of Nigeria would be like that of Rome and Naples.

I congratulate Mr Fashola and his accolytes, especially that Nwa'fo there in charge of the Economy and Budgeting, Ndaa Ben. You guys are trying. But I still think that Lagos is richer than every other state in Nigeria by multiples, except of course FCT. So they should achieve more. There are still poor and unemployed Nigerians in Lagos. If this figure was submitted by the FG some people here would say how has it affected the live of the man on the streets. But am not meddling into such frivolity. Lagosians must help the Lagos govt succeed by paying tax, taking on volunteer works that govt pays for, etc. What's wrong if my church applies to be sweeping a portion of the express way, say every Saturday (even if we've got to hire the sweepers) just to help our society. By this, govt will cut that cost. This is just one out of many helps we as groups and individuals can render our govt.

Reading through the comments of Nigerian youths on issues like this if feel so bad about what we bring to discussion tables.
Firstly, such issues of nat'l importance are discussed with the most embarassing kind of sentiments of either hate, bigotry, chauvinism or mischief.
Secondly, everybody seem to know everything about everything! We discuss issues we know absolutely nothing about its working as though we've won Nobel Laurete in them (am not suggesting that you might not know at least little).
Now, we're always quick to lampoon the govt and it's officials on corruption, insecurity, unemployment, etc. When opportunities are myriad in Nigeria to raise your living condition by yourself!
If I hear that my govt is injecting so much fortune into that sector what I should think is how do I convert this opportunity to my benefit? If by 2015 Nigeria will be self sufficient in rice what can I do? I could be a rice farmer, processor, distrubutor, or I could even sale agrobased materials required in that field. Just say, I could employ myself in either the upstream or downstream sector of that economy. Now, you wont do it. When somebody else takes the opportunity and turns a millionaire overnight you come to NL and say govt corruption has been used to make some rogue peasants rich overnight (this may also happen in some circumstances though but I hope you get my point).
The reason why businessmen and investors wait for govt annual budget is so they know what direction their investment plan would go that year.
The economy of space wont let me say more. Just to say, Stop crying. Start (or rather continue) trying. But if you chose the former, odikwa nma. Nobody owes you anything in life. Not even your parents or your govt. You owe yourself rather.

Inasmuch as I will continue to strongly condemn Dokubo's threat of violence if GEJ is not returned as Nigeria's President come 2015, I will say that it'll be a lie if we say that Buhari had only said "lynch". You cant remove the "blood on dog and baboon" part of that his threat. More so, if the Buhari's garuliuos hunger for power is not akin and incestuous with the northern Born-To-Rule mentality why then didnt a fullscale war break out when the same Buhari lost election to Yar'Adua (an election most widely criticized that even the Yar Adua himself admitted to the wholesale rigging). He quietly took to the court. And I watched the entire court proceeding on that judgement day. Why did we not hear even the sound of a pyrotechnique? The 2011 election might have had its imperfections but it's adjudged by both local and int'l commentators as a paradigm shift from the past.
Lastly, in view of the foregoing, what is the meter with which Buhari himself measures a free and fair election? Is it just one inwhich he or a fellow northerner emerges the president?

This sounds like a vitriolic opinion to entertain, but permit me to piss it out. For 30 whole months the entire Nigerian federation (and their foreign allies) turned corosively against Ndigbo (and some other minorities) in the South East and South South. They killed people whose number has been quoted between 2-3million (women and children and men alike), destroyed their land, socio-political and economic organisation. Uptill this moment Nigeria is yet to apologize or reconstruct what it spoiled there. More painful, Ndigbo are still jeered and insulted and mocked insisted.
While trying not sound saddistic, I feel that 'Karma' has found a way of fulfilling the entire prohesy of Isaiah 49.
But am interested in Nigeria, our Nigeria. We must stand up against evil anywhere and everywhere. The Reverend gentleman, Martin Luther K Jnr said, 'Injustice done anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere'. I appeal to my yoruba brothers. You might feel so safely insulated for far. But this is a terrible and ephemeral peace you're enjoying now. Let's all North, East, West and South rise up strongly and fight this common enemy. Ndigbo have fought their own war and will never fight again, unless perhaps the offer to assist other groups in times of war. Igbos are honestly NOT as bad as you were indoctrinated by those who were using you to further their gains made you to believe.

I've not actually been to that state. Am neither muslim, ACN, nor Yoruba, nor even their opposites or oppositions, so am not really under the voodoo of religious, tribal, or political party, so my judgement is hardly skewed here. When I opened the thread I said let me just read how a human being would have in a position like that for three years without a single achievement to his name! OP should have concretized his claim by pointing out what the governor should have done that he didnt do, name his abandoned projects mentioning their location, etc. If the gov has poorly performed it must be properly measured and scaled with standard calibration and not just a lacklustre conjecture.
Maybe those who're on the other wing (religion, tribe, political party) are just prowling to stone back at their percieved enemies. Let's stop the bickering Nigerians!

Oh, how I love a very meticulous and fact-fat piece like this!
Then, if these where actually what GEJ promised during his electioneering I'd in my own judgement rate already rate him 70 per cent even before the said 4yrs.
Definitely he hasnt touched all promises but has visited perhaps more than 70 per cent of all the aforementioned--although even those attended to may have not been fully delivered to 100 %. Meaning that he's religiously been steadfast on the path of his promises inspite of the multiplex and complex security, human and environmental challenges of our country.
Am so afraid, Opposition party, rather than frost and fume and fuse, they should just kneel down and pray to God that he doesnt insist on re-running cos if he does the opposition will have only a few hardline friends left behind their queue (my opinion, shah. Am not campaigning for anyone at all oo).

It's like he's the Nigerian President that enjoys the highest respect and goodwill from world biggest weights but yet scorned and stoned the most by even the least weight in his home country.

I've always believed it that it cant be commonsensical to Amaechi if he insists on running for that post or worst still as an underline to another person. The damage he'll be causing himself and his family will be monumental and even his Rivers and indeed entire niger delta brothers wont forgive him.
Maybe he has tested his percieved "rascality" (rascality here isnt my personal judgement) with the president and has come to know that he was heading for political hades.
If he doesnt run, it's my prediction that he'll either be a senator or be given a ministry. #Smiles# But God help the north if it's the Petroluem ministry. I'll leave that at that.
If he doesnt run for presdiency he'll most likely become a key actor in the camp of GEJ alongside Alams in the run up of 2015 elections.

I personally have faith that the Nigerian society and citizens have all the possibilties of growth and wellbeing.
This is a good report in my own thinking. But just like I was speaking with a friend over the phone few minutes ago, all these savoury reports must begin to directly affect the lives of people at all wrungs of the society.
While continuously improving and sustaining the growth, the Economic Management Team must take visibles steps to sprinkle this fortune to all and sundry. This can be achieved by improving general infrastructure like road (my friend came in from Canada and has been to over 15 states in both South and North since the past one month of his holiday and he said federal roads have recorded paradigm shift--though they have not all become what 21st century roads should be), Nigerians cant wait to enjoy the "luxury" of constant power supply--though we all agree that it has gone mouribund for rather too long and also investment in that sector takes time to fruit. But at least for the sake of our sorrowful passion we wont mind a magic or miracle. Quality health care delivery must become possibility fastly please. We have almost the highest of everything bad in that sector--mortality, morbidity, etc, except perhaps the one lowness--but only in life expectancy!
I know that govt does not really create jobs per se. It creates good business environment that creates work. But then there is too much unemployment. I dont know if you actually know what it means to search for job for long without progress. Owu saa gi !mara ihe. Whoever damaged our education sector! My good friend, if you didnt know, people write memoirs towards the end of their careers. El-Rufai wrote his maybe as a mistake or cos he has told himself the truth that he's at the twilight of his career. That Soludo hasnt written one does not mean a 1st Class graduate of Economics has nothing to write about himself but that after over a score decae plus of his career he's still just fresher than palmwine. If you dont mind you may want to google his name and see for yourself the number of books of international reckoning that he has written.

My greatest reservation about the OBJ team was their immaturity, arrogance and naivety in handling power despite their experience in professional and private practice. Some fools will clap and cheer this write-up (book) but I think it is a revelation and an insight into the immature minds of individuals who shaped policies that affected over 200 million people in 8 years.

They were much older than Gowon, IBB, Murtala and OBJ in their military years.....leadership quotient is depreciated greatly in Nigeria.
