It is necessary though. There's something about parental blessing. Its necessary they gv their blessing and consent. Its so important that its even stated in d Bible. There r cases where u'r more dan sure dt dx guy x d right one for me n dey seem nt to gv their blessing. Maybe for a selfish reason like u pointed out. In dx case, u'll have a lot work to do. Try to convince dem, pray for God to touch their hearts, be patient. If all of dx doesn't work n u really wna move on, well, u can at ur own risk. But knw dt it'll surely have a negative effect on ur marriage on d long run. My advice is, after d marriage, do everything possible to gt their blessing. 1 Like 1 Share |

Parental consent is very necessary! Even if they oppose the marriage initially, switch over to the 'battle of the knees' and things will fall in place. It happened to me initially but I later won my parents heart and received there full blessing 4 Likes |

It depends on the situation. If the reason the parents don't support the marriage to the spouse is because of tribe or religion; then you don't need to listen to them. but if its because the spouse has a bad life style or invovle in criminal activities then its good to listen to your parents and not get married to the spouse. |

Hmm... The guy that goes against his father's suggestion and comes to you for marriage... ( he is not in good terms with his parents, perhaps) How would you view him? Will he value your parents? Charity, they say, begins at home. My dear, save yourself the ache. Many that treaded that path didn't return or did return with broken bones and hearts. What an elder sees while sitting down, a child cannot see when even standing on an iroko tree. Most parents, not totally all, wish the best for their kids. They have been through the life stages we are still yet to encounter. I think the consent of parents should be considered greatly. Sometimes, when our senses get clouded by love and sentiments, our parents see the situation from different and rational view. |

Its necessary anywhere in the world. Its just more prominent in some cultures than the others. Except you are a wayward child will you not want parental consent. Your happiness is their happiness and vice versa. However, I must be honest that sometimes we just want to go our way and then we ignore parents advice. I wouldnt want to say because of love because I dont believe in that bullshit. I dont believe in love. We dont love eachother lets quit deceiving ourselves. 1 Like |

Parental consent is very important to some extent.but we still have to use our head.when d reason for their refusal comes to church reasons or other issues dt doesn't have to do with d heart,we should remember dt in as much as they are our parents,we are d ones to stay with d wife.not them |

D major reason(s) sum Parents dnt support sum marriages is either d background of d partner is very bad because in igbo land, d parent will send a member of d family to go n ask questions,if d person in question is 4rm a good home or Family. because sum families are caused n sum might hav madness or untimely death in dia homes n u wouldn't wnt ur son or dota to marry 4rm such family.Dats wat we do,bt any parent dat is so materialistic is a bad parent. |

yes it is a good thing to be done it helps bring good things to the marriage, but some parents are filled with hate for a particular tribe or group of people, insisting that they will not accept it for just the reason of hate, such things have caused a lot of troubles in marriages, but if the parents points out reasons on a normal, then is for you to listen and see what you can get out of it.but let me tell you the fact, parents are one way or another have played a role is many broken unions that would have ended up happy today and pushed their sons and daughters into miserable unions... 1 Like |

Culture has been diluted by movement of people thus the reasoning of most people shows why the country no longer has a conscience. Your intention to marry someone means you have decided to take over, from the parents of your intending partner, the the responsibility of a care giver. Think of it this way. You buy a can of coke or wears or gala... you consume and toss what ever remains away. Meaning they are disposables!!! Now, would you, after going through the pains of raising a child to adulthood, give that child to a spouse that will treat that child like the disposables? Though this is not fool proof, but your parents have the obligation to review the immediate factors (character of intending spouse, family, your readiness as a person, etc) and give their consent (or objection). My advise is do not judge them untill you have gotten to that point in life!!! So, it is better to seek their consent for the good of you and your family. |

BreezyRita: I really love this question and would love to learn the repercussions of going ahead with marriage without full parental consent. In my sister's case, my parents forbid over their living bodies for her to marry a guy from another church. You see, it's not their fault. They happen to be top notch leaders of the church we attend and it will damage their reputation seriously if such happens. People tell my sister, do you want to miss your happiness for parent satisfaction? I say, why can't we have both? But its getting really difficult and I'm beginning to think they should just go ahead and fashi my parents. They will come around later. But what if something happens in the marriage? Won't my sister feel guilty for going against my parent's orders |
