News coming from the NE indicates that troops today had a wonderful outing; they rescued 5 family members abducted by BHT at Gamboru Ngala. Troops in Pulka have killed a number of terrorists and recover weapons. Same with troops in Wagga and Madagali. 1 Like 1 Share

rka1: My opinion. Maybe some gunshots from nowhere caused this confusion. And most of the gunshots were sounding so close, maybe to scare away those that fired the first shot as is usual with our security people. The DSS have operatives with diff skill sets, the question is, are these ones capable as body guards or close protection teams, this is because we have a penchant for square pegs in round holes. The gov too get odeshi or e too stubborn, na "get down" dey initially hard am. Make una tell am say hot lead no dey hear odeshi o. |

Soldiers, Not Boko Haram, Attacked My Convoy – Borno Governor The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has accused Nigerian soldiers of being responsible for the attack on his convoy last Wednesday in Baga, a town in Kukawa Local Government Area of the state. PREMIUM TIMES reported how Mr Zulum survived an ambush by suspected gunmen last Wednesday while on a trip to Monguno and Baga towns to distribute food to internally displaced persons (IDPs). Addressing the army’s commanding officer in Mile 4 after the attack, Mr Zulum wondered why the army has not been able to secure Baga despite the number of troops deployed for over a year. “You have been here for over one year now, there are 1,181 soldiers here; if you cannot take over Baga which is less than 5km from your base, then we should forget about Baga. I will inform the Chief of Army Staff to redeploy the men to other places that they can be useful,” Mr Zulum was quoted by Channels TV as saying. But speaking a day after the attack, in another Channels Television video seen by PREMIUM TIMES, on Monday, Mr Zulum said what happened to him was a complete sabotage from the military. “It is a complete sabotage… I cannot end my interview without clearly stating what happened yesterday. As far as I am concerned, there was no Boko Haram yesterday (Wednesday). It was a serious shooting by the Nigerian armed forces while ‘residing’ in Baga. The situation is very embarrassing.” The governor’s statement underscores the disturbing security situation in Borno. His statement suggests either sabotage by some soldiers or poor communication between the soldiers in Mr Zulum’s convoy and those on the ground in Baga who shot at the convoy. The army has said it is investigating the attack. “The Nigerian Army wants to reassure the general public that this will be interrogated with a view to forestalling future re-occurance,” army spokesperson Sagir Musa said a day after the attack. In his Thursday speech, Mr Zulum said the failure of the military to take charge of Baga may lead to residents taking laws into their hands. “Baga is important… We shall organise the community to take destiny into their own hands so that we can occupy Baga. That’s important”, he said. PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported how the Northern Governors Forum, through its chairman, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, described the attack as “callous and reprehensible.” Mr Lalong’s statement was signed by his spokesperson, Makut Macham. The forum said the attack was to frustrate Borno governor’s efforts toward reducing the sufferings of IDPs who had been traumatised by terrorists. “This regrettable attack shows the desperation by enemies of peace and humanity at large to jeopardise all efforts towards making life easier for victims of violence in the state over the years,” it read. Borno is the state most affected by the Boko Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria. The insurgency has claimed over 30,000 lives and displaced millions of others. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/406650-soldiers-not-boko-haram-attacked-my-convoy-borno-governor.html |

Faithful007: "Nigerians" on social media have extrapolated from this and are already believing and putting it about that soldiers not bokoharam are the terrorists up North, which was why I felt that the Governor’s statements were unfortunate. You, know, the military infrastructure has a grater capacity to cast aspersions and make it look more believable than any Governor or even the presidency is able, especially if none of it is based on truth. The military hierarchy would be first to know that the Governor is on to them and thus would make plans to eliminate him. For instance, they could have moved first or move next and accused/accuse the Governor of being behind the terrorism in Nigeria along with some other shadowy governors. They could have made the governor despair and claim that the terrorists were responsible. The fact that they have done none of this rather suggest that the Governors words should be viewed in context of frustration rather than the beginning of the revelation of some deep conspiracy that includes the nature of the terrorism in Nigeria, its funding and facilitations. 1 Like |

COVID-19: NAF COMMENCES AIRLIFT OF ESSENTIAL MEDICAL MATERIALS PROCURED BY WAHO TO 13 ECOWAS COUNTRIES In further fulfilment of its constitutional role of providing aid to civil authority, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to commence airlifting thousands of medical materials and other consumables, procured by the West African Health Organization (WAHO) for distribution to 14 member nations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Nigeria inclusive, to curtail the spread of COVID-19. The airlift of the medical supplies is in fulfillment of the promise made by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the ECOWAS COVID-19 Response Coordination “Champion”, that Nigeria would provide logistics support to ensure the items are distributed to all countries in the Sub-Region. The 13 other ECOWAS countries are; Cote D’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Senegal, Togo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Cape Verde, Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali and the Republic of Benin. The medical materials, which would be airlifted in 3 phases, include laboratory diagnostic kits, Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), intensive care equipment and miscellaneous medical accessories such as coveralls, masks, face shields, goggles, reagents, viral transport medium, ventilators and oxygen concentrators, amongst others. Flagging off the airlift of the medical materials at the 307 Executive Airlift Group (307 EAG), Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, yesterday, 4 August 2020, the Chairman, Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Mr Boss Mustapha, who was represented by the Honourable Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, stated that President Buhari had risen to the occasion as a true Champion who has demonstrated good leadership, solidarity, friendship and good neighbourliness to the Sub-Region. He noted that the NAF had remained the backbone of the logistics operations of the PTF’s response in tackling the COVID-19 Pandemic in the country. He therefore commended the pilots and entire crew of the 2 NAF C-130H aircraft that would be handling the airlift/distribution exercise for their dedication and professionalism. In his remarks, while receiving the consignments for airlift, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, represented by the Chief of Training and Operations, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) James Gwani, noted that, in line with the NAF’s responsibility of providing military aid to civil authority, the Service considered the airlifting of the items a great privilege and worthy contribution to a noble cause. He therefore pledged the commitment of the Service to a successful operation. Also present during the flag-off ceremony were the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zubairu Dada; President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou; Director-General, WAHO, Professor Stanley Okolo; Director of Operations, HQ NAF, AVM Ayoola Jolasinmi, along with other dignitaries and Government officials. This is the reason I care less about what happens to a Nigerian soldier these days or the army. You can't be a responsible soldier under an irresponsible government. We can't have a professional force under an irresponsible government. 5 Likes
