A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday ordered that an 18-year-old student, Victor Obadiah, be given six strokes of cane for stealing a phone.

Obadiah, who resides at Kado village, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a count charge of theft.

The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, gave the order after the convict pleaded guilty, and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

He said that the court might not be lenient with him the next time he appeared before it.

The Prosecutor, Mrs Florence Avhioboh, had told the court that the matter was reported by one Deyoung Ikpi of Dape village, Abuja, at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on Feb.10.

She said that the convict on that same date, snatched​ the complainant’s phone from him at Angwa Cement Bus Stop, Abuja, while going home.

Avhioboh said the convict was chased and caught while the complainant recovered his phone.

The prosecutor said during police investigation the convict confessed to the crime.

She said that the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)

After donating his kidney to the love of his life, Mary Emmanuelle, of course Simon Louis was the happiest man when she survived it.

He had thought the best thing for him to do after both of them survived the operation was to pop the question after she was nursed back to health.

Alas, Mary turned down Simon’s proposal despite having being together for over two decades and like matured people, they both agreed to remain best friends.


Simon, 49, said: “I offered her my heart but I had to settle for giving her my kidney. Whatever happens, I’ll never regret giving her the gift of life.” And Mary, 41, claimed: “He is my very best friend and always will be. The love between us is real.

He could have died doing what he did for me.” Speaking further on why she turned down his proposal, Mary said: “I felt incredibly flattered that he should want to marry me after seeing me at my absolute worst. But I let him down gently by saying I’d have to think about it. I think I’d worry if we got married it would in some way damage our special friendship and also I don’t want to get wed until I’m fully better health-wise.”


Despite his disappointment, Simon maintained he had no regrets about donating his kidney to Mary. He said: “I didn’t think twice about it. There’s no question about doing something like that for someone you love.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has arrested two men for “impersonating” its operatives to obtain $10,000 by false presence.

Spokesman of the commission, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, disclosed this in a statement.

Uwujaren identified the suspects as one Mike Nkwocha and Richardson Obasogie, a “self-confessed Colonel in the United States Army”.

He said their victim (not identified) had petitioned the commission alleging that one Ladan Mustapha, who claimed to be an EFCC operative, called to inform him that there was a petition against him.

Mustapha allegedly told the victim that the petition bordered on illegal acquisition of assets in different parts of the country for which he was currently under investigation.

“Together with his partner, Nkwocha, a meeting was arranged, in which $200,000 was demanded as gratification in order to “kill” the case, but $15,000 was later agreed upon as payment.

“An initial payment of $5,000 cash was made to Nkwocha, while he continued to put pressure on him for the balance of $10,000.

“However, suspecting foul play, after a retired personnel of the DSS (Department of State Services) told the petitioner that EFCC operatives don’t demand money to carry out official duties, the EFCC was petitioned,” Uwujaren said.

According to him, Nkwocha was arrested, and during interrogation, confessed that Obasogie was the “brain” behind the fraud.

He said a search warrant was executed on the suspects’ houses resulting in the recovery of incriminating items.

He listed the items as letterheads of the United States Government, DSS, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Bayelsa State Government, and one computer system.

Uwujaren added that Nkwocha and Obasogie would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

Meanwhile, operatives are intensifying search for Ladan Mustapha, who is currently at large, he said.(NAN)

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has counterfeit and expired drugs as well as other unwholesome items worth over N80m.



Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja during the destruction of the items, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the seizures were made within Abuja and neighbouring states in the last one year.



She added that some persons had been arrested while many others are facing prosecution in several courts.



The NAFDAC boss also disclosed that some of the expired products were willingly forfeited to NAFDAC by some companies and Non-Governmental Organisations.

She said, “Today, we witness the destruction of various categories of regulated products worth over N80m. It is important to note that some of these expired products were voluntarily forfeited to NAFDAC by companies and NGOs while others were mopped up from circulation via enforcement activities of the agency.

“Our enforcement and surveillance systems are not without daunting challenges as violators continue to adopt different strategies to ensure that they evade arrest and enjoy proceeds of their nefarious activities.

“NAFDAC will continue to deploy effective strategies to ensure that violators are not only arrested but also face the wrath of the law.”

Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has expressed his belief in a Nigeria devoid of tribal or religious divisions. Ambode who was in Enugu to attend the funeral of Alex Ekwueme made this known while paying a courtesy call on the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. He said:

“I am more Igbo than any other person because Lagos is a cosmopolitan State and I am not too sure whether I can cross any street in Lagos without having an Igbo brother or sister and if you want to govern Lagos properly, you have to abide by the rules and conditions of business men and women and which the majority happens to be our brothers.


“In the last 32 months that I have been Governor, I have tried as much as possible to keep peace and keep harmony because that is the only way my economy can grow and that is the only way Nigeria also can grow and that is why we are for a united Nigeria. It is also why I am so happy that the last Southern Governors Forum meeting attended by all the Governors was held in Lagos and being the Chairman of the Forum, I took it upon myself that I have to be here for the burial of the late former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme."
