Friends of Umezuegbu Chukwunonso are describing yesterday, November 19, as "Black Sunday" because of the sudden demise of the 24-year-old Uniabuja graduate.

Nonny, as he is fondly called by friends, graduated last month from the department of banking and finance in Uniabuja. He was still working on his project when he died after a brief illness.


Nonso happens to share mutual friends with Chisom Doris Ukadike who was also killed yesterday in an accident in Awka, and friends lamented losing 2 friends in one day.

Nonso was vibrant and well loved by a great number of people, judging from the outpouring of tributes on his Facebook wall.

Wife of Bauchi State governor, Hajiya Hadiza Abubakar, has awarded scholarships to 115 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and vulnerable children.

The scholarship was provided to the beneficiaries through her ‎Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Bauchi Sustainable Women Economic Empowerment and Peace Initiative (BSWEEP).

Speaking during the occasion, Mrs Abubakar stated that the scholarship was given to the beneficiaries to help them acquire education which she said is the bedrock of national development.


She added that the beneficiaries were drawn from IDPs in the state, vulnerable children as well as 15 selected female pupils with special needs from Special Education Centre, Yelwa, Bauchi.

Mrs Abubakar further informed that 50 of the beneficiaries are in junior secondary schools, while 50 others are in senior secondary school.

In his remarks at the event, Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar commended the gesture of his wife towards the less privileged.

The eye surgeries sponsored by the government of Kebbi state has performed 200 surgeries giving back the gift of sight to 200 people from across the state.



The outreach by The Centre for Community and Rural Eye Care Initiative, ICare also gave free eye glasses and medications to patients.

Ponzi scheme MMM has officially announced a “RESTART” of the system, leaving many Nigerian participants wailing with thousands and millions of Naira trapped in the scheme.

In a message posted on the home page of participants Saturday morning, the scheme said that it had struggled to stay afloat after going on a break in Dec. 2016 but had been forced to do a system restart.

Many of the participants who commented in various MMM Whatsapp groups recounted sadly how they and family members had lost millions to the scheme.

MMM is a ponzi scheme which gained popularity in Nigeria in 2016. It promised to pay participants 30 per cent return on investment every 30 days.

Despite various warnings by the Federal Government and its financial regulators, many Nigerians adamantly went on to participate in MMM.

RESTART

Unfortunately, we were unable to overcome the consequences of the crisis triggered by the authorities and mass media incautious actions at the beginning of this year. Despite all our efforts. The problems have been accumulating and, as a result, we have to announce a restart.

So, there is a restart:

All old Mavros (acquired before this announcement is posted) are frozen. We will gradually buy them back as the System develops.

All transactions with new Mavros (acquired after this announcement is posted) will be carried out on the usual terms with no restrictions.


Some amendments have been made to the rules:

Mavros will now start growing at the moment the request is confirmed (not at the moment it is created, as it was previously).

Some of the participants of the scheme expressed regrets for ever joining MMM.

One of the participants (names with held) said that if he had known he would have used his money fro something better rather than investing on the scheme.

“This MMM people are very useless, they just came to dupe us,” he said.

On the promise by the scheme to buy back the debts it owed Nigerians when it restarts, he said: “Restart? who are they restarting with? Nobody will join MMM in Nigeria again”.

“MMM is gone and gone for good,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it will not be discouraged by the legal obstacles it is facing in the process of recalling Kogi-West lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye.


The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this at the quarterly consultative meeting with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.


Yakubu said constituents had the right to recall anybody they wanted to in a democracy.




He said, “There was a pronouncement on Thursday last week on the matter and everything has been taking to the Court of Appeal. We are waiting to be served with court documents and the commission will take a decision today.


“Ultimately, election and recall are legal processes and we will not violate the laws of this country but I want to assure you that we will proceed courageously. Citizens must have the right to recall anybody as long as the process is in conformity with the law of this country and I am committed to that.”


The INEC boss also warned politicians seeking to run in 2018 and 2019 to stop campaigning as this was in contravention of the Electoral Act.

Senator Binta Masi, the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs has called on all Christians in Nigeria to join politics.

According to her, the church can determine who Nigeria's leaders would be once they participated actively in politics.

“In spite of the challenges encountered in politics, Christians should not be discouraged. Once you have God by your side, everything will pave way,” she said.

She made the call at the National Conscience Conference organised by the Buildman Foundation of the Summit Bible Church Abuja on Saturday.

Erstwhile goalkeeper of Nigeria's Super Eagles, Vincent Enyeama has been sacked from his club, Lille alongside 10 others by new coach, Marcelo Biesla.

The French club’s new Argentine boss has also sent messages to Zambia’s Stoppila Sunzu, Tunisia’s Naim Sliti and Ivory Coast’s Junior Tallo saying they are not part of his plans.

Enyeama, who played 101 times for the Super Eagles, only signed a new deal last season and could choose to follow the lead of Tallo.


“As for me, I’m under contract. I will respect the two years I have left. I’m in no hurry,” the Ivorian told French Newspaper L’Equipe.

“I want to establish myself at Lille.

Im highly disappointed that these "great men of God" are making inciting statements!!! At least all of them are educated, some of them even have universities so they can actually read and have access to curriculum developments and trends in the country!!!

If they can show any Nigerian where the FG has ordered or in anyway with her policies forced students to study Arabic studies, then they have a point; but with baseless claims, its not so good for these reputable men.

Chukwudi Leo, a Biafra supporter has said that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is “bigger than Jesus”.

For over ten years, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire has aired on major network stations across the nation and it has become a family game show.



It came as a rude shock when news went round that its major sponsor, telecoms giant, MTN, pulled out of the show. Due to this development, the organisers of WWTBAM had no choice but to rest the show temporarily.

While several rumours have surfaced especially on the internet stating reasons why the telecoms operator backed out, Punch learnt from a reliable source why the show has been rested temporarily.

The source also hinted that the show would definitely be back on air for its tenth-anniversary celebration.

The source revealed that the main reason MTN backed out was because of the N330bn fine by the Nigerian Communications Commission.

“It is the fine that was imposed by NCC that made them pull out of Who Wants To be A Millionaire. The company loved the programme and wanted it to air but that fine was too much for it. It was not WWTBAM alone that it dropped, so many agencies working with the company were also affected including its permanent staff; so it is not about the programme alone.

“Apart from that, its South African arm also has some little problem that it is facing. That is the reason. However, it is just a temporary thing, once it has settled, the programme would be picked again. It is coming back but for now, it is temporarily resting. In fact, it would air for its tenth year anniversary,” the source said.
