He’s confused. Fashola is originally Ekiti. He’s just saying rubbish. It’s obvious the guy is not Lagosian and has no knowledge of the history of Lagos. Royalty indeed. One village chiefs son.

They are still yoruba people. The Plumptres are formerly Agboola family. That's my grandmother's people. I know the Rhodes, Bucknors
I have been trying to explain to them that the ones with English names adopted those names and are actually Lagos Island Awori. They have Yoruba family names but they are arguing with me. Lol. People from the bush in Lagos want to seize control and the strides that Lagos Islands made to make Lagos what it is today!

there you go with all that crazy talk bro. Your family came here after my family built this place up. You guys are barely 150 years old in Nigeria. Are you saying Lagos state is only 150 years old ? Put some respek on a Niggas name for all the hard work we did putting this place together before you immigrants joined us in the 1800s. Put some respek on a niggas name angry. I ain’t asking for too much but to put some respek on my name
I belong to at least 3 of those Lagos Royal families too. Your family built nothing in Lagos. Lmao. Go and ask who built Lagos and you will see all these families names come up. Oyinbo did not even know you exist except we brought you out for taxing. Which your family remits to our Oba’s and administrators. Call your family name if e sure for you! I am even sure if you do, they are probably not Awori.

the only thing you are responsible for is repatriating here in the 1800s with that white mans name and white mans money and coming to grab all the land in Lagos with grin that white zaddys money. Am the real Lagos royalty in this mahfuka. My family built and still is building Lagos as we speak. My brother is who went and bought all the Lagos blue line trains and ferry’s from Milwaukee USA. We doing good work out here
Your family built nothing in Lagos I can assure you. Those names up there are responsible for most of the building in Lagos and setting up Lagos for what it is today. Your family were largely isolated and living in remote villages. Even your father cannot make the claims you are making here. Who do you think you are chatting with? Go and ask your father, Lagos Island families made all the moves for Lagos and were the richest and most educated Nigerians. So where does your family come in? Only 4-5 real royal families in Lagos. Oba of Lagos, Benin and Lagos Island Awori ancestory. Onikoyi of Ikoyi, Oyo Ancestry. Elepe of Epe, Epe Ancestry. Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Ikorodu ancestry. If your family does not belong to any of these then you don’t come from a real Lagos royal family but from a political chief subject to one of these families.

Very few royalty in Lagos are even as original Awori as these guys you are trying to rubbish their ancestry. Your so called royalty is not royalty but a village chief who was updated by Tinubu. Very few real Royalty in Lagos. Not these cash and carry ones that your family probably belongs to. Which is why you obviously know nothing about Lagos Island families. We are different from the bush ones from the mainland. So don’t insult us. We are responsible for the Lagos you are proud of today.

Till today that Vaughn family they kept in touch with their relatives in America. The Vaughan’s from America meet up with the Nigerian Vaughan’s annually for family get together and to tell their story. It is what it is
YOU are the one formulating stories out of your ass. You are not Lagosian and you do not have an idea what you are talking about. I am telling you what the reality is. You can not use the story of one immigrant to Nigeria to now paint all Lagos families. That was not a returnee but an immigrant. It’s different. Stop confusing yourself, jumping to conclusions and trying to turn family histories greater than your own to rubbish.

Also another reason why many of these ex slaves gravitated to Lagos Nigeria is that at the height of the abolitionist movement several extremely rich white philantropists, the billionaires of their time, all got together to form the AFRICAN COLONIZATION SOCIETY to deal with the slave problem by repatriating former slaves back to Africa. Then they paid an ex slave called MARTIN DELANEY to go explore Africa for a suitable place to repatriate the ex slaves to. And Martin Delaney explored Africa and found his way to Lagos Nigeria and went back to report to the white billionaires and then they built a huge ship and gave the slaves who wanted to return lots of money and shipped them to Lagos

XAUBulls
Guy, they did not gravitate towards anything. They simply came grin back home. You are arguing points you know nothing about. You don’t know the history of Lagos like I do. I am from one of these families and we do not discriminate against these people and call them slaves. They made Lagos what it is today! These families occupied Lagos Island and were mostly taken from there or travelled from there. Lagosians, especially Lagos Islanders are far ahead of other Nigerians in every way when it came to education and trade. They had been doing international trade and education long before other Nigerians who were telling tales in villages and clapping hands every night cheesy. The Ijebu’s were still in their fishing villages and Eguns as well. The village Awori’s were farmers. These names are Yoruba exposed to westerners and most are Awori descendants who occupied Lagos Island. The ones with English names have Yoruba family names. Those ones did not go anywhere to slave! They just adopted those names via religion or trade due to their interaction with Oyinbo. The ones with Spanish sounding names are returnees!

They returnees are not all slaves either. They are also well respected members of Lagos because they brought with them a lot of knowledge and building in Lagos. So stop trying to diminish them and their contributions. Their wealth was made in Lagos through industry and being pioneers in introducing things to Nigeria which the West were already doing. No slave master gave any money to any free slave! African American are still fighting for their 40 acre and a mule.

brother you said they were mature when they left and came back older with knowledge of their villages ? Do you know how long slavery went for ? Like 300 years. Nobody who went came back unless you fought the slavers on the ship and escaped and returned back I. Which case you would still remain your african name. All those names are the white masters that owned them . Anyone who has those names is a many generational slave. They have no idea where they came from. They mostly picked Sierra Leone or Liberia or Lagos to return to
The ones that escaped in Sierra Leone were shipwrecks. They came right back home. The ones from Brazil were not all slaves and Brazil did not practice slavery like US. No White person gave anybody money. The blacks in Brazil were keeping families with links back to Nigeria and preserving their history so they know where they are from. A lot were able to buy their freedom and come back home before death too. It’s not a one type of story! No slave returnee from America came back! America was too far and brutal with their slavery. Except they immigrated into Nigeria legally like this Vaughn that you claim. Even that was rare.

i have researched this thing very well case in point the Vaughn family who had many generations in America but in the mid 1800s the man decided he wanted his generation to grow up in Africa so he found his way to Sierra Leone before eventually choosing Lagos Nigeria and then his children married into the Yoruba tribe and one of his grandchildren was the first black medical doctor in Nigeria etc etc
Ok. It does not apply to everyone on that list. 99% are Yoruba and the returnees are Yoruba too. Tansome-Kuti found his way back to his village in Abeokuta. Many on that list like that from Ogun and Osun state. Not all on that list are Lagos names. Freestuffs just added all the names she knows. Most of those returnees were mature when they left and came back older, with knowledge of their villages and even family member they left behind. So they did find their way back home and started contributing to their ancestral land tremendously.

It seems that you are not understanding what he said. He didn't explain in detail so it is understandable.

All land bought and registered under the land use Act grants a 99 year lease to the owner. The ultimate owner of the title is the state. In this case Lagos state. When that lease expires, Lagos is entitled to refuse yo renew it and or to grant that land to the original owners or a third party.

Meaning no one absolutely owns land in any state - all you have is a long lease. Only people with freehold titles are exempt.

Also all land compulsorily acquired in the past by lagos state especially under military governments is being returned to its ancestral owners irrespective ofvwhom lagos state has distributed it to since then.

Big lesson. The best place to own multi generational real estate is in your own state.
Not true. These families own their land for perpetuity and Lagos State Government is helping them lease and collect rent via tax. They owned these lands before formation of Nigeria government and any laws on land ownership.

all these names are slave returnee names. When they were released from slavery they were given some money and repatriated to Liberia and Sierra Leone from where they found their way to Lagos and were richer than everybody because white man compensated them a little and then they used all that money to buy Lagos land up. And so all these are not true lagosians. Just the richest black expatriates after slavery who bought up Lagos land and they also came back with some skills so they were of a higher class than the local population hence why they all became famous . Some came from Brazil too
Not true. Load of bullshit you wrote there. Yoruba going to Brazil knew who they were and not all were returned slaves. Yoruba were going to Brazil for trade and education. Some were free in Brazil, made money and came back. No Oyinbo will give you any money as a free slave. The slaves amongst them paid for their freedom and came back home.

These families own Lagos Island and a lot of land around Lagos. A lot of their kids are abroad so thieves pretending to be Omo Onile are selling these lands. Most people are living on stolen land.

Ransome-Kuti and a few others are from Abeokuta and not Lagos. The Brazilian sounding names are returnees. The English names are Yoruba Lagosian with Awori roots with old family links to Lagos Island, but they embraced Christianity or Oyinbo names. They all have their own Yoruba family names. Oyinbo used to give names by profession too. So some of those English name allude to profession of ancestors when English people landed in Lagos.

You are either a small boy by being uncivil in your post or you belong to the other side. You can't be more lagosian than I am. I was in my maternal family house this afternoon on the island and I took the below picture. Look at what's written on that ark. Iga Oshodi Buku of Lagos. It's written in Benin language. Iga means compound. Google will help you of the origin of the word oshodin which was later changed to oshodi by removing the letter n. They're a popular family in Benin citiy till date. Even if you also have that word in Nupe language, it can never mean same as what it means in Benin language. Oshodin in edo means the representative of an oracle and am sure it's not same meaning in nupe. It's not a yoruba meaning either. An oracle representative in yoruba language is called aborę, not oshodi.

Oba of lagos himself had corroborated this in the past. I remember when mc oluomo was showing interest in becoming the oba of oshodi and oshodi family fumed. It was never a rumour but the truth. Oba of Lagos told the so called oshodi family that they're fake lagosians as that name they gave themselves didn't belong to them . That they came and adopted it for relevance sake.

That said, the early settlers of the eko( now called lagos Island) are the binis while the early settlers of the other parts are the aworis. We're not disputing this. This topic centres on Eko( the lagos Island) not other parts of lagos

Can you ask your wife to tell us the meaning of Oshodi in nupe as you're now claiming it's a nupe name?
Oshodi is Nupe and has always been. Just because something has a meaning in your language does not mean it is the same in other languages. Iga Oshodi Buku has nothing to do with Edo. The guy is Nupe, but you are still arguing and claiming you know better that he is Edo. Lmaooo. Something that is a well known Lagos history is what you are distorting.

Oba of Lagos is not more Lagosian than Oshodi family. They are more Lagosian than him and he will never say such. If he ever said such please provide the record. You just come from Edo state and start typing rubbish and making up stories. Lmaooo. Your so called Edo people met Lagos cosmopolitan and assimilated with bringing their culture. They are not what makes up Lagos. The Awori own Lagos outright. Your Oba does not own the land his palace sits on, what does that tell you?

That they are settlers who formed a system for their own people like Igbo and Hausa chiefs in Lagos today. They are not founders or early anything. They met everyone there that is there now. The Egba’s, Ijebu’s and Aworis.

Oshidin or oshodi may mean a different thing in nupe. That doesn't make nupe one of the early settlers in Lagos. Edo ( binis)and awori were early settlers here. You can distort history.

By the way, you can still voice your opinion without being sarcastic. Grow up
Benin are not the early settlers. They were invited by Oyo’s as cousins to partake in living in Lagos. Awori own that part of Lagos and Oshodi is Nupe. Stop twisting history! The Oshodi of Lagos is purely Nupe and has absolutely nothing to do with Edo. You are still arguing stupidly when someone close to their family member is correcting you. You are overstating Benin stake in Lagos. Most Lagos families with English names have Awori origin but adopted English names.

Typical Igbo needing any kind of Oyinbo validation to prove themselves. This is why they cannot be President of Nigeria. Their slave mentality is too ingrained. It will be like handing over Nigeria to be sold to foreigners.

WTF kind of shameless and stupid post is this? What concern us with a bunch of fake Oyinbo profile posting the exact same news. Lmao. Which shows Igbo have sponsored or opened fake pages to publish? Bunch of fools.

1- if he doing something right and step on powerful toes
2- if he is doing something wrong step on the populace toes

The question is how do we determine which one.
Simple, if all the publications are things before he attains power then, No 1,is the case. He is doing something right.

So what is President Tinubu doing right that is warranting this.
1- stopping international thieves that steal our oil, they are fighting back
2- stoping explioters of dual exchange rates
3- stopping oil subsidy thieves
4- repositioning Nigeria for growth.

Conclusion
It is obvious this publications are sponsored and huge funds is involved. Moreso some individuals which are Nigerian wouldn't mind to destroy Nigeria just for their private gain.

Not true. The word Oshodi in nupe could mean a different thing, same way Ife( love) in yoruba also means different things in different tribes. Ife in ibo is different from ife in yoruba.

I used to see Jide too on ibo buses but jide in ibo is different from jide in yoruba. You see. Even in same yoruba, the word Ife has different meanings and pronunciation. Oshodin and oshodi are same pronunciation. The only difference is the "N" . Edos were the first occupants in Lagos and we're not disputing that.not Nupe. All the Lagos Obas used to be taken back to edo for burial until about 150 years ago. Their regalia till date is similar to that of bini chiefs. Most of the names given to compounds on Lagos Island had edo meaning. Oshodin or orshodi and iga aren't yoruba words but that of Edo. That oshodi is also a nupe word doesn't make it relevant in the lagos formation, neither does it mean same thing.

It's also never mentioned in history that nupe were among the early settlers in Lagos. If you had mentioned kwara, kogi and some parts of middle belt regions as places where Nuoe had settled in the early days, I'd have said you're right.
You are dragging my wife’s direct ancestor name. Are you crazy? Benin is not the only other subgroup in Lagos. Northerners were also there. Oshodi is pure Nupe.

Has anyone here read of the Adebisi Idikan and family in Ibadan? Has anyone read of the historic wedding of one of his daughters which shook the entire Yorubaland at that time and atrended by Britons? Had anyone learnt of this man, who once paid the taxes of the entire men in the ibadan city for years to the colonialists in that era? His house was the best and most expensive in ibadan during his day's.

His friend happened to be the father of the first lawyer and first medical doctor in the old oyo empire, including ibadan.

While lagos has always been known for feferities and societal events, cheered by the big and mighty, we can't conclude that more of such great events weren't taking place in towns and cities outside Lagos in that era. During this time, only Lagos Island, Ebute Metta, Yaba and some adjoining places in Apapa formed Lagos while other places were full of water and tick forest. Most of the areas which now form part of lagos used to be part of the Ogun state land. Agege, the entire alimosho, Berger, Ojodu, olowoora, etc, used to be Ogun state even Ketu down to Ikorodu used to be Ogun territories. While some other parts were inhabited by the binis. Some of these areas are the Igas on the island, Oshodin( now known as oshodi). Oshodin is actually an edo word. It doesn't have any meaning in our tribe and language. Some people in order to gain relevance in Lagos gave themselves that name oshodi. Same as Docemo( a white name) now called Dosunmu. Iga Iduganran are bini words. Madam Tinubu was originally from egba. She never had a child to herself. People came.and adopted that name as their surname, just to gain relevance. It's a woman's name. As powerful as she was, one of her husbands (the borno man who was one of her workers) had to bear her name as his last name

Meanwhile, Ibadan, the so called brown roofed city was the most civilised of all cities in west Africa as of then. Those brown roofs were owned by the rich ones who came from far and near to settle in Ibadan the way they do in Lagos today. If your father had an iron sheet on his roof in those days, then he must be rich because during that era when Iron sheets were trending, only about 25% of all the buildings in Nigeria had iron sheets coverings on their roofs. They were mainly covered with bamboos. You hardly see the brown-roofed buildings in several of the present day towns and cities, except in some villages where those who built in the cities during the era also built houses the way many also do today.

While Lagos could be termed a place for societal events, Ibadan had witnessed several of such historical events too, similar to what the OP put up. Back then, Lagos used to be 2nd home of the egbas. Those mentioned in that lagos wedding were originally from egba in what is now called Ogun state. They came and settled here and became part of us. My maternal side ( the Jakandes) came from Kwara, the igbomina area of kwara.

Those praising lagos should remember that a tree doesn't form a forest. Other tribes too contributed immensely towards the development of our great state. I wonder why people hardly talk of the likes of ojukwus and other families. The man who once owned the largest transport company in Africa. The man who once owned limousine and other exotic cars, yet unlettered. God bless Lagos. God bless Nigeria and Nigerians.
Oshodi is not an Edo word but Nupe. More than likely Oshodi impregnated someone in Edo. He has many concubines and bastard children all over the country. But Oshodi is Nupe. It is Oshodi, not Oshodin.
