you answered yourself...that port is an FG property and before the State government can do something on it, it must obtain permit from the FG...which seems somehow impossible because of tribalistic politics
the federal government will rather build a port in warri, bayelsa or calabra, instead of onitsha...they might built it in the next 20years sha

to even clean the waterways is a problem talk more of developing it. To renovate the overhead bridge that passed across it has been a problem for long.
Okay. If this was to be a country of intellectuals we would have had running about three to five ports for now.

Onitsha (Igbo: Ọ̀nị̀chà Mmílí[4] or just Ọ̀nị̀chà)[5] is a city, a commercial, Industrial, educational, and religious centre and river port on the eastern bank of the Niger river in Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria.

Onitsha by 2001 had an estimated population of 511,000 with a metropolitan population of 1,003,000.[2]

The majority of people in Onitsha are Igbo and speak the Igbo language however significant communities from Northern and Western Nigeria live in the city. The Onitsha people like to be referred to as Ndi Onicha.
As a city lying strategically at the bridge between Eastern Nigeria and Western Nigeria, and between the densely settled Igbo hinterland and the oil-rich creeks of the Niger Delta, Onitsha is strategically positioned as a regional hub for trade and logistics in Eastern Nigeria.

Sentiment aside, why don't FG do something about this Onitsha seaport? It could go a long way to generate employment, increase our revenue base and open doors for foreign investment which all in integration boost our GDP. Must we play politics with everything?

Aside that one Nairalander challenged guys

YOUR REAL HATERS are the people who did all they could to stop the port even when you supported their incompetent brother as President. To make that port a reality needs unity with other Nigerians .

Clown your contribution is not needed here, go to the Imo related or other non Anambra related threads. Onitsha Port is working, take your evil far away from us as we have nothing in common with you nor your people. Stay away from us and everything that concerns us. I don't know if you are cursed to be commenting on every thread on NL. You have been warned!

why? Is Onitsha no longer Nigeria? Or you just feel like the people in igbo land should not just be happy over any achievements?

If we have this mindset towards ndiigbo, why not just let them go?

Onitsha Market is one of the largest markets in West Africa.[1] It is governed by one of the most revered traders associations in Nigeria, the Onitsha Market Traders Association (OMATA). Most of the major import merchants from Eastern Nigeria have their head offices within the market. The average traders in the area are known to bring in at least six consignments of 40 tonnes (40-feet containers) of goods annually. Some of the major importers do more than 20 consignments of 40 tonnes of goods per year. These include jewelry, clothing, household, industrial and office equipment.

It is bounded by the River Niger to the West and Fegge through Osumaru Road from the East. The market is secured by the Onitsha Main Market Vigilante Services working under the auspices of the Nigeria Police Force. The market can rightfully be described as the commercial power house of West Africa. It is massively patronized by merchants in the ECOWAS sub-region including Accra, Abidjan, Douala, Niamey and Cotonou to mention a few.
