$45 we have a long way to go!!! C'mon, people.

yeah I know undecided
To say I work in a bank, they are quite stingy, but Im not worried, they will get hungry and want a candy.

but once I introduced that I will hold an iphone raffle one lady said she would buy 20 tickets

the tickets would be 2-5 $ i havent decided on the price.

But If that doesnt bring enough I might just post them on ebay a bit higher than my usual sale price (donation wise)

So I wont give up!

*pumps fist in the air*

Chiogo- make sure u get at least 2 ppl to donate.
if everyone gets 2 others to donate, we will make it in no time.
Re: Help Me! Disfigured Teenage Student Cries Out by chiogo(f): 2:47am On Oct 01, 2009
I thought everybody who was willing to donate was supposed to donate $20. $45 doesn't make sense. C'mon people.

Girl, I'm in college and the people here are very stingy. Everybody will tell you they're broke - students. But I'll try sha. I'll start with my roomie.

platnumnk.:

Wait. Excuse me?? Im not trying to take it as an insult, because this is Nigeria.
Look, I will raise the funds. If you want to help, please do so, but your words are discouraging. And I ask people who I have spoken to before.

I agree with your point with the hospital but not with the point of "avoiding stories"

I am the one handling Nairalanders and Funds in the US/UK, another Nairalander is handling funds from Canada and other sources.

I have a jar of funds I have collected from work. What stories is there to be said.
Are u trying to stay something?
Look- I live abroad. I know it might not mean much but, I have a very stable income.
Lots of people hold fundraisers here and no one trips about it, I donate when ever I can.
When people ask me to donate, I donate because I want to help, no to worry if it is a scam or not, if you have to worry then you need to hold on to your money. Because you need it more than what ever you are giving to.

What more do you need? Have you contacted the hospitals? Sent your "organizations" to them?

I dont like this tone you are taking, rallying up people to do things, when I have taken out my time and organized it, site went down and i rebuilt another one from scratch.

Im not trying to boast, I just want you to see the effort put into this.

And it hurts me when u insist on scaring people.

My phone number is on the site, why not call me?

To all those who have donated so far, Thank you.
I will count the amount I collected at work and post.
Might post pics too if I have time.

**I am also holding a raffle for an iPhone ** but I think I might hold that one at work.
That should raise money quickly.

thanks
I never meant to imply that you are unning a scam, am really sorry if it came out that way. I learnt the hard way that sometimes when we raise money and give parents or guidance the child is not treated because family and relative could divert the funds. I support you 101% and am doing my best from my end too. I did not mean to scar anyone, In my line of work, i have seen some things that made us develop a strategy where funds go directly to the beneficiary. Once more am sorry if i offended you. Good luck, we will keep in touch.

platnumuk,

U said it all. Its quite discouraging and scaring when u invite frnds and potential donors over to the site to see things for themselves and some one who is supposed to be familar with the Nigerian mentality is raising false alarm.

Plat, keep up the good works. Pls no distractions.

I just sent some money by western union to his uncle, one Dominic Chilemo(002348064162432),he doesn't even know about nairaland talk less of the efforts we are making to help his nephew but i have adviced him to tune in and follow up with the happenings.I hope he is the right person, even though he sounded humane, one never knows but then,i have satisfied my concsience.

It is just my way of celebrating the fucking independence, reaching out to someone in dire need.We should all learn to reach out no matter how little,it could make a huge difference.

Fellas, visit the website aisha2 posted before saying unkind things to her. She has said nothing insulting in her posts and everything she said made sense.  I know a bit about the organisation she works for and they are SOUND, esp the guy who founded it, Kwajafa. He is one of the Nigerians I respect the most and you don't get my respect easily.

They have done amazing things for children. The Joshua case is right up their alley. You're saying 'Stick to the Plan'. What is the plan?To get the boy the surgery he needs. Is there another plan? The family doeosn't know the Indian hospital in question.Someone said the surgery can be done in Nigeria and furnished specialists. Aisha works for GIPLC, and you really need to research that organisation, they're wonderful people, and she agreed to contact National Hospital in Abuja on behalf of the boy. IF the surgery can be done there and when it is ready, she suggests the HOSPITAL be paid directly. Did she say you should hand the donation over to her? When you finish collecting the donation but no one even knows how and where the boy will be getting surgery, what are we doing then? Do this well and don't get carried away.

Its not what she is saying but how she is saying it.
I have already stated before that I will only send it to the hospital or the mother, and that makes sense to me.
But for everyone to write individual checks to the hospital? - That wont mesh well with a lot of people I know.
And her reason for sending checks to the hospital is so to be "safe" apparently that means safe from me which hurts/.

I also asked her orginization to go to see them and for her to call me.
My lines are open.

And Another note to Everyone- Please dont call that number unless is is about a Donation - Thank You.

@platnumnk truely, like Max said, dont get carried away, i have not seen what Aisha2 posted that deserves such harsh remarks.
We are all trying to help and she's offered a solution. You are not even in the country and she is.
You set up a site, so is it about 'glory' now? Please just be calm and consider her solution.
It isnt about any of us, its about saving a life.

Ok.
This is stance on the issue, and I want to make it clear for everyone.
The site was set up to make it easier for ppl online and for people I know to send donations that are not in Nigeria.
It is a great idea for her and her group to go and see the parents,  infact I am waiting on her call.
It is the fact that the trust factor was reinstated in the posts.
Many people that havent been to nairaland are beening sent this link to read.
How would it look when I direct people to this site and they have others contesting it?
And u know Nigerians are very suspious.
I emailed many close friends yesterday, and I still had to text them to let them know how serious I am.
The more help, the better, we defintely need it.
The funds are only going to the hospital or the mother. - I hope I dont have to repeat this again.
The only happiness I seek is the Josh being well again.

Aisha2, what's the answer to my question? When are you going to have someone go there?
Re: Help Me! Disfigured Teenage Student Cries Out by Nobody: 12:51pm On Oct 02, 2009
Spoke to the parents and they disagree about how we can help. We are willing to raise money for the surgery but only when they can conclusively confirm where and when the surgery is scheduled, right now, it seems they want the money for drugs, and my organization does not raise cash because we need to ensure credibility and this is how we have built our name and reputation over the years. If today they can tell me what hospital the surgery is and how much it is, we couldraise the money in two weeks but they can not give me all that information, the mom keeps saying they need to go and buy drugs in Lagos.
I am shocked at some of the words and insinuations made here, I am trying to help the boy and help you the donors to ensure that the money is used for the boys surgery, its not about me and if a lot of you feel strongly about what you are doing, then by all means go ahead but if after giving your money and the surgery is not done, please save me and other Nairalanders the stress of reading a thread about how bad Nigerians are because what is worth doing is worth doing well.
What we are trying to find out is where the surgery will be and they have not given me that response yet. Platnumk, i am not contesting your site or the geniuness of your intention, all am saying is that, be sure of where and what money you are donating is going to be used for, I would feel bad for you if after all your efforts, the ys surgery is not carried out.

we are getting in touch with his people and looking into national hospital. When we confirm a hospital, we get cheques in the name of the hospital, in the case where the child is to be taken abroad, we get people to write cheques in favor of NTA. from my experience, people give you reasons to doubt them, so we usually deal with the hospitals directly or an organization that is credible.

========================================================================================================

Fallas, Aisha2 has being making great efforts and good advices not until she suggested writing chq in favour of NTA. same NTA!!!. I dont buy that idea at all. I love her idea of writing the cheque in favour of the hospital!! Its a great idea.

I strongly believe there is the need for People/donors in Nigeria to pay into another account different from that of the Joshua's mom. So that we can write chq directly to the hospital so that the money donated will not end up being used in BUYING DRUGS FROM LAGOS.

If we can trust AISHA2, which i belive we should, I suggest she can give us an account we can pay into and then she can write a chq in favour of any hopsital we/family decide to carry out the operation.

Pls aisha when next u call the mom tell her to give u the name of the drugs. She shouldnt waste money coming to lag. I can buy the drugs and waybill or DHL it to them. The operation should be our priority here and not buying of drugs, especially if it endetails coming from the way from the EAST to lagos just to buy drugs.

Waiting for ur suggestions and advice.

I said NTA because they usually bring cases like this to us and when a child is to be taken abroad and we are trying to raise money, people find it easy to trust NTA becuase of their track record in bringing assistance for children in these kind of situations. I asked the mom for the name of the drugs and she said she was in a bus that she will call when she gets to her destination, am still waiting for her call.
I am more interested in getting the comprehensivecase file or possible referal so we can know what hospital to pay to. I could have gone to Enugu myself but i have a baby here about to undergo delicate surgery, his case is special to me because he was abandoned by both parents at birth and his situation is dicey, so am staying close in case they need something from the hospital.

Thanks for ur reply.

But can u give us personal/any acct we can use? rather than using JOSHUA'S MOM acct? for accountability purposes. I think its better so that u can write the chq directly to the hospital. I strongly believe that "WE"in Nigeria can raise money faster than all "these abroad based people" cos of the economic meltdown. And if we keep paying directly to the UBN account of LINDA we may end up not be able to fulfil our aim. At least our aim is not just to pay money but to see that the operation is carried out successfully soonest.

I Just paid my 1st treanch of money into thatUBN acct, but something tells me that the money may end up being used in buying drugs or something else.

pls reply. b/4 i make the 2nd payt.
Re: Help Me! Disfigured Teenage Student Cries Out by Nobody: 2:40pm On Oct 02, 2009
The truth is that I would prefer to have a comprehensive report of the whole situation first, then we can know where to pay the money into. when his mom calls back, i will talk more with her so we can understand hwere the surgery is to be carried out. Please be patient, whats what doing is worth doing well. I wouldnt want you to pay even into my organizations account because we dont do that, we prefer people deal directly with the hospital. we asses the situation first and see what needs to be done before we bring out our cheque books. I should have more news when she calls back.

i apologize if my words or any others came out wrong.
I totally agree with paying only the hospital.
I talked to the Uncle Dominic this morning.
He says the only reason why they were told to go to India was the amount of Plasma that needed to be used is not availble here in Nigeria.

Im pretty sure that Joshua's guardians are not well knowledged of medical stuff, hence the want to buy drugs
Though that wasnt mentioned at all when I called this morning.
Aisha- if someone else, perhaps a medical doctor can give him a second opinion , because I feel that they will never settle down on a correct hospital because no one is guiding him and they are only going by based on what they know.

How soon can someone go there?
And do you have a contact number? Where I can reach you?

My fears exactly. I am working on getting someone over there, I would have gone myself but as i said i have a child here in Abuja waitng surgery. i am still talking with the parents though. Let me give you a bit of an example, before we started paying directly to banks, some parents will collect money and say they paid house rent or they did something else.
Check our website, there are numbers there you can call. Am sorry i havent called you, I have had phone issues for some days, but my collegue will tell you everthing you need to know, he could give you my number if you want.
Thanks for understanding. God bless you for this work of love and faith

I want to say this to all NLanders. I am very proud of you all.  Even though we fight and bicker at our differences most of the time, it's good to know that we still can come together and be each other's keeper when it matters the most. This bond is what holds us together, first as human beings and secondly as Nigerians. I'm so proud of you all.

To the organizers, God bless you! I'm ashamed to say that when this story first broke, I felt strongly about doing something but never made a move on it. I kept stalling and stalling until I forgot all about it. Seeing this story again today made me feel so ashamed of myself and do some self reflection. It's one thing to talk about doing something and it's another to actually make the move to do it. Thank you again guys. Good job!

and please keep on donating grin

The boys mom just called and asked me to inform others not to send money into the uncles account, she said the uncle has been diverting the money. This is the type of stuff am talking about, when money starts coming in, people in situations like this can turn to monsters. I may have to go to Enugu myself next week to get information about the scheduled surgery. The kind of thiongs i see in this my work is heart breaking, some families turn a tragedy like this into a meal ticket, Please whoever is collecting the donations, just hold on to it, when we are sure of surgery, we will give you the name of the hospital
