The boys mom just called and asked me to inform others not to send money into the uncles account, she said the uncle has been diverting the money. This is the type of stuff am talking about, when money starts coming in, people in situations like this can turn to monsters. I may have to go to Enugu myself next week to get information about the scheduled surgery. The kind of thiongs i see in this my work is heart breaking, some families turn a tragedy like this into a meal ticket, Please whoever is collecting the donations, just hold on to it, when we are sure of surgery, we will give you the name of the hospital

NO wonder he dont ( the uncle) even know the name of the hospital in INDIA.

redsun:

I just sent some money by western union to his uncle, one Dominic Chilemo(002348064162432),he doesn't even know about nairaland talk less of the efforts we are making to help his nephew but i have adviced him to tune in and follow up with the happenings.I hope he is the right person, even though he sounded humane, one never knows but then,i have satisfied my concsience.

It is just my way of celebrating the fucking independence, reaching out to someone in dire need.We should all learn to reach out no matter how little,it could make a huge difference.

I strongly believe "WE" should only deal with the hospital and the MOM only. No to the uncle or any other relations

After all our aim is not just to raise money but to make sure that the money is used for the right purposes.

WE must nt be discouraged at all. WE CAN DO IT!!!!!

Like aisha2 said, let's stick to whoever is collecting the donations until we are sure where the operation is taking place.

I'm so mad right now. Redsun please can you contact the mother of the boy and let her know of your donation and the amount at least.  cry  I'm sure the mum's number is somewhere on this thread.  I don't know if it's this one, 07056499575. Can someone confirm?

I hope the chap is not a guyman because he sent me a text yesterday with his email address attached saying he could not find this thread on nairaland,so i sent him the link via email.

I hope nest time i will hear from him,he won't be coming up with some deals, anyway,i am equal to the task,we will yarn.

As for contacting the boy's mum,i don't think i will be able to do that,if they can toy with such a thing,i am just not keen on them anymore.
Re: Help Me! Disfigured Teenage Student Cries Out by MadMax1(f): 3:31am On Oct 04, 2009
You have every right to feel that way. The uncle is diverting funds? This is why I insisted  on the mother's bank account, and why having donations collected paid directly to the hospital sounded good. When it comes to money, lots of people mess up. He didn't know the name of the hospital in india when I asked. How did he come by the amount for the surgery then? I asked for the mother's account and he quickly sent me his. Someone pointed out that the plasma required for the boy, according to the article, is too much. But it's this same Uncle who supplied all the information in the article. It was in a national daily. Lots of people must have seen it and sent money to the bank accounts in the newspaper ( the Uncle's accounts). That was why having someone on NL look into things and arrange the surgery here was such a fine idea. We'll know the real needs of the boy and the true costs.

He has no qualms about stealing money meant to undo another suffering? No worries. It's not our problem. The so-called Uncle will get his comeuppance. What goes around comes around.

It's natural for you to be disgusted. But remember it's not the boy or his mother who did this. Please don't punish him for his Uncle's heartlessness. Just follow your original generous impulse and give. There's a good Redsun. kiss

I am in constant touch with the mom, and i should get a comprehensive report from the Doctor tomorrow. I have informed the mother that neither her or the uncle will receive any more money until we know the hospital where the surgery is going to hold and we will pay what we have to the hospital. I was speaking to a Dr friend on Saturday who is a pediatrician and he laughed so hard when i told him that the parents said they needed money for Plasma and were going all the way to lagos to get it. He explained that plasma is simply blood without white blood cells and it is not expensive or hard to get. He advised that if we really want to help we should parley with the hospital and know the boys exact state and pay what we have to the hospital. My advice, please just keep what we have gathered now, dont pay even to the mothers account, I am so tied up in Abuja, if not i would have gone to Enugu, but i will be expecting the report by mail from the Dr, and then i will post it on Nairaland so we can know exactly what we are doing. If we pay now to even the mothers account, you will be suprised that when its time for the surgery there will be no money left. Please you guys trust me on this. This method has worked for us for three years, There are so many examples where relatives will want to use a childs illness to make quick money. Please do not be discouraged, the health of the child is paramount, lets focus on that. God Bless you all

I've been following the progress you guys are making with the donations for the young boy's treatment and i'll like to make a few comments.

The boy is apparently being treated at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, the questions you donors should be asking are

(1) Who is his doctor at UNTH and what exactly is he treating him for.

(2) Why is there still the confusion as to whether he is going to India or not for his surgery. The simple truth is that the required surgery can be done and should be carried out in Nigeria. I have posted a list of specialist surgeons who will be able to help if and when contacted, I'm not sure if anyone has tried to do this.

(3) It seems clear that his so-called uncle is scamming the money donated by well meaning individuals by diverting the funds for his own use, so anyone donating any fund should be made aware of who the final recipient of the fund is.

The most critical thing to do now is to find the appropriate hospital in Nigeria where his treatment can be carried out before you guys send your money to anyone.

To answer your questions:
1. I am meant to speak to the Doctor Later. Usually, in cases like this, we request for a letter from the hospital with the details and cost of treatment, I am waiting to get that from the Dr on Wednesday. As soon as i do, i will post it here.
2. We need the Medical report from UNTH before we can seek a second opinion.
3. Thats my appeal too, please dont send money to till we know where and when the surgery will hold

Major setback. Mom was supposed to hook me up with the doctor for the medical report but now she said they have been discharged and will be going back to the hospital on the 15th
Re: Help Me! Disfigured Teenage Student Cries Out by platinumnk(f): 4:48pm On Oct 06, 2009
what?!! angry why they discharged them? Was it because of money?

Did the mom say why? why are threy going back so late? Doesnt she have the doctors name that treated them?

She should stay there, and refuse to leave.

Sometimes that is what you have to do.

I dont get it , if she knew we were coming why did they leave.

Im gonna call them tonight.
Re: Help Me! Disfigured Teenage Student Cries Out by Nobody: 5:21pm On Oct 06, 2009
I dont think its money. Most times when a patient is not in need of immediate treatment he is discharged and made an out patient to save cost for the family. I was disappointed because this would ve been d best time to talk to d doctor and make headway.

is there a way for them to go back?

or can u talk to the doctor without the family present?

i thought the mom knew u were coming?
Re: Help Me! Disfigured Teenage Student Cries Out by Nobody: 10:41am On Oct 08, 2009
Spoke to the mom now, i let her know that i was unhappy with the half reports i get from them. She informed me that, a sample of what is in Joshuas Mouth was removed and taken to the histology lab and that is why they were discharged and asked to come back on the 15th of October for further directions. Now I am wondering how the uncle came up with the amount needed for the surgery since examinations have not even been concluded. I have told the mom that if i do not get to directly talk with anyone in the hospital i will hands off this case and she assured me that she will get me in touch with the doctor.
This type of things are the reasons why we insist on proper information and investigation. In the past and even now, i have seen people sadly take advantage of a bad situation and the kindness of Nigerians and generosity of Nigerians. Please do not get angry or loose hope, our focus should be on Joshua and the kind of help he needs. Thank you all for your kindness, patience and generosity. I am sorry i have not been able to go to Enugu myself but am doing my best via E- Communication to investigate this issue. Thank you all

It seems some sort of progress is being made.

From aisha2's report he must have had a needle aspirational and incisional biopsy for the histopathologists to determine if his problem is just an infected traumatic inflammatory swelling or something more serious.

In any case, he needs to have whatever treatment is required as soon as possible. I wish him the best.

Hi all, good news. I was finally able to speak to the Dr today, his name is doctor Ojri, i asked him to guide Joshuas mom in applying for a hospital medical report and it seems he did because they called and asked for my email and office address, as soon as i get i, i will post it here. God Bless and reward you all.
Meanwhile, I have four new patients in the national hospital. I have a boy withcancer of the jaw, the doctors there have taken his case as pro bono and are treating him free but they need N75000 for radiation and an 11 yr old baby with a growth in her anus. She needs N700000k. The boy with the cancer needs urgent help as his cancer is spreading fast. Please if you are touche, kindly write a cheque or bank draft in favor of National hospital Abuja. God Bless you all
