Buhari thinks that having a strong exchange rate makes things cheaper for the masses. He feels it wicked for economist to allow the Naira devalue bringing pain upon the masses. The ultimate determinant of your exchange rate are market forces and not economists. If the oil price drops by half, the Naira would lose value. People will pay more to buy dollars. If you refuse to devalue, the foreign reserves will sink fast.

For Instance, the official exchange rate is around ₦410 per dollar. "That is kind of the president" some would say but is it?

The problem is who will supply at this rate? When was the last time you purchased dollars at this rate? Will you, any of you sell your dollars at this rate? In reality it is an "audio rate." The prices of goods and services reflect the parallel market rate of around 600.

So, because the exchange rate is overpriced at the official market, it has led to repressed inflation. Because inflation is repressed, this prevents goods to be sold at realistic prices, it leads to artificial scarcity of that good or service as providers are not ready to sell at the old price as its not market reflective.

It is because the dollar price is not market reflective, that has led to an artificial scarcity of forex, hence limits on our naira debit and suspension from PayPal. We are in deep shit economic wise until Buhari goes

The gap between the official and parallel Market rate should never be more than 3%. The former CBN governor, Sanusi said so. Anything above that differential will cause cause distortions in the economy, encourage round tripping and corruption. Presently, it's over 30%! You do the maths yourself.

Round-tripping is when you buy at the official rate to simply resell at a much higher price. For instance, GTB charges ₦490 when buying domain names. I am sure all banks overcharge.

Also, the well connected like someone in Buhari's family can "purchase" from the official rate to simply resell. I can ask Zahra Buhari that I want to buy $10m. She can offer it to me at ₦500 per dollar. She instructs me to deposit ₦5b into her company account, Iamnotzahrabuhari Nig.ltd. This company now buys $10m for ₦4.1bn and supplies the $10m to me. She has made ₦900m profit by doing absolutely nothing.

This government is one of the most incompetent, most corrupt and most wasteful in the country's history. PMB's poor education and obstinacy completely obliterates any benefits of his incorruptible character.
