The sword referenced here is metaphorical. Much like the Sword of the Spirit, and Helmet of Salvation spoken of in Ephesians 6:17

The Pope and the Catholic church was the head of government back then and I think you should know that Roman Catholicism and Christianity are two different things with different ideologies and teachings.
