Food / NAFDAC Appeals Ruling Declaring Fanta, Sprite Poisonous With Vitamin C by 360frolic(m): 10:16am On Mar 16, 2017
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has filed an appeal and a motion to stay execution of a judgement on Sprite and Fanta soft drinks.

An Igbosere High Court had ordered the Agency to compel the Nigerian Bottling Company, NBC, Plc, to carry a mandatory warning on its Fanta and Sprite products, stating that the contents should not be taken with Vitamin C in order to avoid poisoning.

The court berated NAFDAC for poor regulation of the products, popular among millions of Nigerians.

The judgement was delivered in a suit filed by Fijabi Adebo Holdings Limited and Emmanuel Adebo against the NBC and NAFDAC.

In her reaction, the Acting Director General of NAFDAC, Yetunde Oni, through a text message ti Premium Times from Vienna, Austria, observed that the agency is a national regulatory authority and would react both scientifically and legally to the judgement.

“Our lawyer has filed an appeal and a motion to stay execution of action of the judgement also filed,”she said from the 60th session commission on narcotics drugs she is currently attending in Vienna.

The NBC had on Wednesday also appealed the court judgement saying it was not true that the drinks are poisonous when taken with Vitamin C.

Crime / 20 Suspected Prostitutes Aged 13 To 14 Arrested In Kano State by 360frolic(m): 7:36pm On Mar 13, 2017
The Kano State Hisbah Corps has arrested 120 suspected prostitutes and drugs addicts at a recreation centre located about 21 kilometres outside Kano city.

The Corps said it made the arrests during a night raid on the Hills and Valleys Recreational Centre in a joint operation with the state office of the Nigerian Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, after receiving series of complaints from residents of Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of the state.

The Director-General of the Hisbah Corps, Abba Sufi, told journalists that out of the 120 girls and boys arrested, 20 are believed to be between 13 and14 years old.

Mr. Sufi said 19 of those arrested were notorious persons who the command had arrested several times in the past and taken to court.

He said they would be prosecuted under the state’s Prostitution and other Immoral Acts Prohibition Law enacted in 2001.

Mr. Sufi said some of the girls arrested were at the venue for a wedding ceremony and that the command has handed them over to their parents.

“We have 37 boys and 79 girls who are mostly under-aged and we have invited their parents to caution them against allowing these under-aged ones to engage in social vices”.

Abba Sufi said the corps had also identified some other black spots where illicit drugs were being taken mostly by young girls and boys, warning that the command would soon swoop on them.

“The EFCC, under Mr. Ibrahim Magu’s leadership, will never succumb to any pressure. Like we have always said, there will be no sacred cow,” he said.

Politics / Amina Mohammed - Why Young Women Must Be Proactive by 360frolic(m): 1:31pm On Mar 13, 2017
Amina Mohammed, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General has urged young girls to stop waiting for opportunities to drop into their laps.

She made the call through her message to the Youth Forum of the Commission on the Status of Women, ahead of the International Commission on the Status of Women.

“Gender-based discrimination, marginalization, violence and other human rights abuses; unequal access to education, to health care; these are basic rights and also to opportunities for leadership and participation. This list goes on and on.

''The barriers are so high that it would take 170 years to achieve economic equality between women and men; 170 years!

''I’m sorry but I do not accept a world that says equality is not good enough for you or me or our daughters,” she said.

The deputy UN chief challenged young women not to wait for opportunities to fall on their laps but go for it as waiting would not make it happen.

“I’m not waiting. I know you’re not waiting. When I was your age I was never waiting. I was always being told to take it easy or time will come. And I was always thinking my time is now. So, our world can’t wait. Building a better world won’t happen on its own.

''We live in a world that is out of balance. Eight people hold the same wealth as half of humanity. All of them are men, by the way. Joblessness – particularly for young people – is on the rise. In many parts of the world, it is completely off the charts. And when you see data that just aggregates a figure, look behind the data to the people, the faces and where they are,” she said.

Politics / Lagos To Buy 5, 000 Air-conditioned Buses To Replace Danfo by 360frolic(m): 12:56pm On Mar 13, 2017
Lagos Sate Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, at the weekend said that the proposed Bus Reform Initiative aimed at giving Lagosians an integrated public transportation system would kick start this year with a sinking fund of N30 billion.

Governor Ambode, who spoke to journalists, said his administration had identified the challenges Lagosians go through on a daily basis commuting via public transportation, saying the reform was aimed at providing a viable alternative.

He said the Bus Reform Initiative is a three-year plan aimed at introducing over 5000 air-conditioned buses to replace the yellow commercial buses, popularly called Danfo, which according to him, was no longer befitting for the State’s mega city status.

“We decided that the best thing is to allow the yellow buses go and so the Bus Reform Initiative itself is a three-year plan of 2017 to 2019 in which it intends to bring in new buses of 5,000 units in the three-year plan.

“The bigger size buses will take 70 people and then the medium range buses will take 30 people. We believe that the middle range buses will be supplied up to 70 per cent of the total volume which will amount to about 3,600 units and then the longer range in that direction,” he said.

Speaking on how the government intends to fund the initiative, the governor said that his administration would launch a public transportation infrastructure bond of N100 billion that would span between seven and 10 years, revealing that the government already has a sinking fund which it intends to put into the bond.

Politics / Senator Adeola To Hameed Ali - Appear Before Senate In Customs Uniform Or Resign by 360frolic(m): 9:20am On Mar 13, 2017
Senator Solomon Adeola has called on Hammed Ali, Comptroller-General of Customs, to resign if he won't wear uniforms while appearing before the Nigerian Senate.

In a statement by his Media Adviser, Chief Kayode Odunaro, Senator Adeola said that the Senate resolution summoning Ali to appear in Custom Service uniform and rank was aimed at protecting the organization’s integrity.

The statement reads, “We have had a Major General, Haladu Hanniya as head of FRSC wearing the agency’s uniform as well as a Major Danjuma Maigari wearing even the KAI uniform in Lagos State, all in a bid to promote agencies they lead.

“This is not the Abacha military era when a Sole Administrator was appointed to head the Nigerian Customs.”

“Except in covert operations, an officer in these organizations operating without uniform could be taken to be performing illegal duty or worse, be taken as not representing the institution at all.

“And as stated on the floor of the Senate in plenary, the Comptroller General is a rank that can only be worm on uniform and not on mufti.”

''There is concern among officers and men of the Customs Service on the appointment of 'outsider' to head the agency as it is a morale killer, career progression inhibitor as well as damaging to the organizational growth of the service stressing that there may be need to amend the Nigerian Customs Act to restrict appointment of CG to career officers as it is done in the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Immigrations and the Nigerian Prisons Service.

"The APC-led Government of President Muhammadu Buhari was elected on the promise of change, adherence to rule of law and renunciation of impunity in any forms. The story we hear daily is the arrogance and high-handedness of the CG and name dropping of the President. We had it on good authority of his reluctance to be answerable to the Minister of Finance as stipulated in laws of the land. We that were elected cannot look the other way while the people we represent are subjected to avoidable hardship orchestrated by an unelected appointee in a bid to cure the inefficiencies of the agency he leads. We are in a democracy," the Senator added.

Benue State Police have arrested one Misa Mohammed that has been parading himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
Spokesman of the command, Moses Joel Yamu, said the suspect was arrested at No.33, off Egume Street in Wadata area of Makurdi after the command detailed its men on his trail following a tip off.
Yamu said the suspect, whose real name was Misa Iorliam Francis, appeared to have been defrauded by an illegal recruitment syndicate and cautioned people against dealing with questionable characters promising them jobs.

Speaking to newsmen, the suspect said a certain police officer, Uche Paul, who he met in 2013 when he registered for the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Plateau State had allegedly masterminded his recruitment into the police academy.

“The man (Paul) took me to the police station and assured that he would recruit me. He later printed an acceptance letter which he gave me as the commencement of my training. He recommended books which I bought and he urged me to read them as part of my training for the four years I stayed there.

“I went back to my people who donated N130,000 which I gave to Paul. I have been collecting things such as money and food items from my people for him during the period. And when he told me that I was going to pass out on February 3, 2017, I organised my people who went to thank him while I also did a thanksgiving in the church,” he said.

The suspect, a native of Naka in Gwer local Government Area of Benue State, however admitted that he bought the uniform and gave it to an unsuspecting police tailor who sewed it for him.
