Chapter Three

Martha gathered up her things as she prepared to leave for the day, for some reason, she felt even more exhausted today than she was on other days…she paused in her movement as that thought came to her, no, it wasn’t ‘some’ reason, it was in fact, a very specific reason

She had spent the whole day trying to hide from Alex, at some point she began to think that he just made things easy for her and stayed out of her way on purpose, he probably noticed her desperate, highly unsuccessful attempts to avoid him.

Pathetic.

She sighed to herself, things were bound to get tougher for her in this house ,she could just feel it and she wasn’t sure if she liked that or not….if she liked the distraction or…..

“Martha?”

Omari’s booming voice drew her out of the solace…or was it turmoil? Of her thoughts, she turned to him, “Sir?” he was sitting up in his bed and reading a book, it was a common habit of his to read some business or motivational book before going to sleep. She should have asked on Sunday night why he had refused to be tucked into bed, it should have been the clue that he was expecting someone, his son….

His head was tilted to the side as he studied her, “Something wrong?”

She shook her head and forced a smile, “No sir, I’m fine.” She replied, how would she tell him that she was thinking about that jerk she had been unfortunate enough to meet today? She was angry at herself that she had allowed him rule her thoughts the entire day when he deserved no place in them. so, what if he was incredibly handsome and had a body to make Bryan Okwara green with envy? He wouldn’t be the first attractive man she had seen, the city of Abuja was crawling with them….fine, she hadn’t really had the opportunity to be around men who weren’t related to her, even less the ones as gorgeous as Alex was, but still….

“Are you sure?”

Since the first day she had come into this house as his care giver, he had been nothing but caring to her. He was nice and attentive, even when she wasn’t willing to divulge her problems, he always noticed when she seemed different and tried to make her feel better, she couldn’t begin to count the amount of times he had paid her salary much earlier to help her get out of a bind, or sometimes outright given her some money. It was why she couldn’t begin to fathom why anyone would hate him at all, even less his son.

Alex acted like his father was the anti-Christ himself, she simply couldn’t reconcile that man with the one she worked with on a daily basis, which meant Alex was probably wrong about the man or he had grown up rebellious hence his skewered view of his father.

She turned to him with a smile, “Yes, sir. I’m fine.” She replied

He nodded, “That’s fine, if you say so.” He shrugged, “Say me well to your parents and your brother.” He said as she picked up her bag having packed everything she needed.

“They’ll hear sir. Good night.” She said

“Good night Martha.” He replied with a smile.

She couldn’t help but notice the similarities again between Omari and Alex, she shoved thoughts of the younger Onoja at the back of her mind and prayed she wouldn’t encounter him on her way out. If she had any luck he was still inside his room and would do her the favour of remaining there.

She opened the door carefully just so she wouldn’t make any noise to alert him, she poked her head out of the door to scan the area for any signs of Alex, grateful when she found the entire hallway was dark, he was probably still up in his room. While she was glad that she wouldn’t have to encounter him, she was a little sad for the same reason, even to her, that seemed funny.

She stepped out of the room and closed the door behind her, she held her bag tighter against her shoulder and proceeded to walk out of the house. She was heading toward her favorite entrance- the back gate, when a thought occurred to her.

Alex’s words flashed in her mind, he had accused her of using the wrong entrance earlier in the day. She bit her bottom lip, she might as well just use the front door and quash that idiotic comment of his- not that he would be around to see her use the ‘right’ entrance, but it would make her feel better. She was no burglar and the front door was just as good as the back one.

She turned around, her mind made up and made her way to the front door defiantly. She was just passing by the sitting room when a voice shocked her to her bones, “You are so predictable.”

“Jesus!” she screamed as she dropped her bag to the ground.

The lights were turned on and the entire room was flooded with brightness. Lo and behold, sitting in one of the grand chairs in the room, was none other than the same person she had been avoiding….scratch that, the person she had thought she had successfully avoided. He had his legs crossed and was dressed in a pair of shorts and a grey polo that accentuated his impressive biceps and lord knows what else. She frowned immediately.

“I’m starting to think your face can’t conjure anymore expressions other than that frown.”

“Maybe it’s the only expression your face can conjure on mine.” She shot at him as she angrily picked up her bag.

He shrugged, “That would make you weird, considering this face has been known to conjure quite the opposite on other women.” He replied cockily.

Such suffocating arrogance had no presence in this house, she scoffed, “Such a high opinion of yourself.”

“Oh, far from that. I’m actually quite the humble guy, you would have found out a little of that if you hadn’t spent the entire day trying to avoid me.”

She rolled her eyes, but was no less taken aback by the fact that he had noticed. She had guessed so earlier on, but it didn’t make it any less disconcerting that he indeed had noticed her awful attempts. She was done with him, she had a feeling if she entertained this guy for too long, she would end up leaving here pretty late and her house was far enough.

“Good night, sir.” She said snidely and walked toward the door

“It’s Alex, good night Martha.”

She halted in her movements and briefly closed her eyes, there was something so deep and…carnal, about the way her name rolled off his tongue that shook her to her womb. She gripped her bag tighter for the feeling to wane off. Damn it! She hurried in her footsteps and flung the front door open, wanting to leave his presence as fast as her legs would carry her.

The annoying thing about her efforts was that she would still have to come back to this house tomorrow, back to him and it made her even more nervous. She didn’t know how she would be able to comfortably work here for the rest of the week until he left…but she would have to.

Hello Safarigirl
You can invest in a mobile laptop external battery, especially as a writer and freelancer.

I got this [see pics attached] over three years ago for 25k. It serves me 12-16 hours. Since my laptop battery lasts 4-6 hours, by charging and using my laptop battery before re-charging, one external battery can last two to three days.

Saves you the stress of fuel and engine oil and all the noise. Just beside you on your work station and easy to plug.

Cheers. wink

Update: Who's in the Pool?

****

Alex figured he would give Martha a little let up the next day by leaving the house early. he was no hermit to be sincere, and spending an entire day at home on his first day had caused him to feel dull. He loved it when the sun hit his skin and he loved it when he got to go out and have a good time, so the next day, he had picked out of one of the keys to his father’s car and dropped a note for the old man telling him he had gone out. Initially, he was going to go to his room and relay the message, but he didn’t want t o spoil whatever routine Martha had set out for his dad and waking him up before her arrival would have probably done that. He had riled her up enough the day before, he wanted none of that this time.

He had something of a blurry memory of the city centre, but thankfully, his father had installed a GPS in his car, so it helped him in his quest to visit a few places. He had always known that Abuja could be dull in the daytime, but the night life was quite interesting, so, he opted to visit places that would at least be open during the day. One of such places was the Arts and Crafts village, a place he had fond memories of.

His mother had always loved art, so, the village was one of the few places she loved to visit. He could never forget that look of mirth that was plastered on her face whenever she visited. There was aglow to her that was non-existent whenever they were with his father and since then, he made a note to himself that if he was in Abuja, he would get her something from the village.

It had been the first place on his list to go to, but he changed his mind and decided to see a movie first, so he visited the cinemas. As expected, the mall was considerably empty when he got there, but he wasn’t there for the people. The thought caused a smile to form on his lips; that was an odd thought from him. He lived for the people, for the ladies. He supposed his lack of interest in the ladies was as a result of his mind being on a particular lady. The others would have to wait he supposed, they were fish fry compared to the shark that was right at his backyard.

He saw two movies at the cinema and by 11PM, he was on his way to the Arts and Crafts village. Suffice it to say, there were lots of things to choose from, and while he hadn’t come out with lots of money, his ATM came in handy in his sojourn. By the time he was through, he had gotten his mother a dress, a bead bangle and a miniature sculpture that would look beautiful as a table piece, he had also gotten Lanre and Jaiya a pair of matching bracelets and settled for a shirt for Kobi.

By the time he was through with his shopping, he was filled with excitement, he stopped by Dominos Pizza to get something to eat before making his way back to his father’s house a little earlier than he had planned. He had written in his note that he would be back by evening and had told Donald same, but he figured he would make an early stop and relax a little before he went on his evening outing. There was no way he would be missing out on the night life.

He had just gotten to the street of his father’s house when a call came in from his mother. He grinned once eh saw the Caller ID and answered, he hadn’t spoken to her since he arrived two days ago, she was probably worried he had finally dismembered his father.

“Hey mama.” He answered in a sing-song voice as he slowed down reaching the gate

“Alex, are you alright?” she asked, her words dripping with concern

“Of course mum, never been better” he replied.

There was a period of silence from her on the other line so much that if he couldn’t hear her breathing, he would have thought the line had been cut

“Is your father alright?” she finally asked, she couldn’t even hide the terror in her voice

He grinned at her question; leave it to his mother to imagine the worst when it came to his happiness with his father, “As at the time I left, he was…at least I guess so. He was asleep, so unless he was lucky enough to die in his sleep, I reckon he should be rolling about in his wheelchair.”

He could hear her sigh of relief as he maneuvered his way into the compound and waved at Donald who was saluting him, “So, what has you so happy?” she asked, a little cheer now present in her voice.

“I went out, got you some stuff.” He replied killing the engine of the car. He picked up the carton of pizza as well as the other items he had gotten from Dominos and stepped out of the car, choosing to leave the other items in the boot until later.

Donald rushed off to him to greet him and he handed the security guard a package he had gotten for him. the man was ecstatic and thanked him profusely, he waved it away and advanced to the house

“Mind telling me what those things are?” his mother asked

“Yes, I do mind actually. I’m just telling you I got you some things to keep you waiting and anticipating.” He teased as he opened the door and walked into the serene house. There was nothing but silence within the house, which meant his father wasn’t rolling around in his wheelchair like he had thought…where was Martha though? He thought.

The sound of his mother’s laughter drifted over the phone and he couldn’t help his smile, she had such a beautiful laughter, he wondered if he would ever find a woman whose laughter could make him smile so hard like his mother’s did, “You mischievous child, the anticipation better be worth it.”

“Haba mama, have I ever disappointed you?”

“No dear, you’ve never.” She replied, he could hear the smile in her voice at her response.

He walked to the kitchen to drop the items he had bought, once again wondering where in the hell his father’s supposed caregiver was. Did she perhaps leave the house while his father napped to go and do whatever her side gig was? He was aware that people did that a lot in government establishments, but how did a private nurse abandon a sick patient to go about town? She couldn’t be so careless.

“Well, I’m not going to start now.” He said as he turned to head to his bedroom first ,he would take a quick bath before settling to eat, maybe check on his father later…if he was feeling up to it of course.

He had barely moved a few inches when his ears just barely picked up a faint sound of splashing water. Was someone in the pool? Who could be in the pool? It’s not like his partially paralysed father would be taking a swim…unless it was part of his therapy. Was Martha helping his father take a swim? He doubled back and advanced to the backyard instead

“I’m counting on you then, glad to hear you haven’t strangled your father yet.”

“Oh, I’ve come close a couple of times.”

“Alex!”

He laughed at her shock, however once he reached the screen door, the sight he met caused his laughter to die down….that better be his eyes deceiving him, because there was no way in hell his father’s prissy, little caregiver was taking advantage of the cool swimming pool, “Mum, can I call you back later? Something just came up.” He spoke to his mother, his eyes stuck on the moving female form in the water

“I hope everything is fine over there.”

“Yeah, it’s great. Just want to sort out a small matter.” He replied as he slowly and quietly opened up the screen door just so he wouldn’t alert her of his presence

“Okay, call me back when you’re through.”

“I will, love you mum.”

“Love you baby.”

And then the line went off and Alex could finally deal with the form that had grasped his attention. He barely took a step forward before he noticed her begin to leave the comfort and protection of the water, she couldn’t see him because she had her back to him as she left the water, but he could damn well see everything he wanted to of her in a scandalous orange bikini that looked incredible against her dark, brown skin. Damn! The last time he had seen an ass that good was in a porn magazine when he was a teenager. His mouth briefly went dry as his eyes devoured the sight of her magnificent derriere and spotless skin especially as droplets of water stuck to her form and the sun shone against her lovely skin, she looked like a bikini model in those mouth-watering ads that weren’t children friendly.

He had to reign in his thoughts which had gone haywire as he imagined all the ways he could bend that ass over and do the most sinful things to its owner, thoughts that had his pants tightening uncomfortably. It was about time he ended her party

“Is this part of the terms of your contract?” he asked

As soon as she heard his voice, she was screaming her usual “Jesus!” and jumping back into the water.

He smiled as he swaggered toward her, “Oh, if only Jesus could see you now.” He teased, he placed his hands in his pocket to hide his probably visible bulge

Her expression went from mortified to angry in a switch once she found that he was the one interrupting her afternoon swim, “You shouldn’t be home this early.” €she shot back at him

“I don’t understand, is there a stipulated time that I’m supposed to come back to my house now?”

“Your note said you’d be back by evening, it’s barely two.”

He smiled, “Oh, you read my note, that’s nice. I thought you’d just trash it to be honest” he said as he finally reached the spot she was floating. She was neck-deep in the water so that when he looked down, the water distorted her form, but he didn’t doubt her front would be just as impressive as her behind

“Maybe I should have, considering you lied.” She accused him bitterly

“I didn’t lie, I just changed my mind. And thank God for that, I could’ve missed this, I would never have forgiven myself.”

“You’re sick!”

“That may be true, I am my father’s son after all. However, I think you’re violating the terms of your contract.” He stooped lower and she swam farther into the pool, “Why don’t you come on out and we’ll discuss the likelihood of me telling on you. I mean, an old man like my father stands the risk of getting a heart attack or something if he woke up to a sight like I just witnessed, that can’t be healthy.”

She seemed to give it a brief thought, but was adamant, “I’m not getting out.”

He laughed at her stubbornness, it was both amusing and adorable considering the dicey situation she found herself, “Darling, hypothermia isn’t just a word, you know?”

When she wouldn’t budge, he looked around the area and sure enough spotted a towel folded neatly on a plastic chair, her eyes followed his gaze, but failed to give away her thoughts. He rose to his full height and went over to the chair. He picked up the towel and returned to the pool, “Let me help you out.” He said, unfolding the towel as she watched him cautiously, he spread it open, “Can you get out now? I don’t need Yvette accusing me of killing her employee.” She continued to watch him, but it was obvious she was strongly considering his offer. So, he sweetened the deal a little, “I’ll tell you what, I’ll be a gentleman and close my eyes.” He said as he closed his eyes and looked away as much as he would rather not.

She certainly wasn’t moving as fast as he thought she would at his offer, if she wasted any more time, he would have to break his gentleman’s honour and look. he heard her move in the water and smiled to himself. She wasn’t silly after all

Update....

What happens by the poolside.....

****

She should have been more careful.

It was a little too late to think that now, but as Martha hurriedly escaped the growing chill of the swimming pool to bask in the heat of the sun against her skin and the feel of the cotton towel, she couldn’t help but curse her lack of foresight and ill luck.

How the hell would she ever correct whatever notion he must have of her right now in future? She was mortified by this unfortunate incident, it would have been much better if Omari had been the one to find her in such a compromising state, not Alex, anyone would have been better than Alex.

She shivered slightly as she grasped the corners of the towel and forcefully dragged them from his grip to wrap around her body

“No need to be so aggressive.” He spoke into her ear, the intimate intrusion causing her to shiver once more, but this time, it had nothing to do with the cold that seemed to have vanished as soon as she realised he was standing close.

She tucked the towel and forced herself to take long, even breaths, he was yet to move an inch away from her space and she couldn’t move if he didn’t step away, he simply hadn’t given her that much leeway. Why wasn’t he moving? she gulped to wet her parched throat as a smoldering heat seemed to engulf her, what the hell was going on?, “I want to go inside.” She spoke softly

“What’s stopping you?”

Apart from the human rock blocking her movement? Was that a trick question? She had had just about enough with this man’s cockiness, she spun around swiftly to tell him off, but rather than cause him to lose his balance, she was the one who was almost tipped over. She yelped as she lost her footing, she was heading back into the water and closed her eyes just knowing the fall would be not so easy, but she never quite made it as a strong hand suddenly came around her waist and pulled her into the safety of a hard body.

Martha’s eyes flew open at the unwelcome contact, they widened slightly when she realised how close she was to Alex and whatever breath that hadn’t left her with the shock that came with almost falling back into the pool disappeared in that moment.

“You shouldn’t move too quickly, lest you hurt yourself.” He spoke evenly as his eyes roamed her face, the predatory look in his eyes making her even more aware of the fact that she was very much underdressed beneath the light towel wrapped around her body and even more that her breasts were pressed a bit too close against his chest. She could feel her nipples hardening but she preferred to think it was more because of the slight cold she felt than anything else. Her breath was ragged, how that could be despite the fact that he only had her in his arms was something Martha couldn’t understand. She had been close to other men before, maybe not as close as this, but close enough that it should have been uncomfortable, but none of those experiences were anything close to the battle her body was now facing.

“Let go of me…” she said, there was an edge in her voice that was birthed out of her frustration, something he either didn’t notice or couldn’t be bothered enough to acknowledge because he failed to even ease his hold on her, “….please.” she added in a tiny, desperate whisper. If he didn’t let go of her, she was genuinely afraid of what she could end up doing

For a moment, he failed to move so that she thought indeed, she would ended up doing some silly thing she would eventually regret. He suddenly began a slow descent downward and Martha forced herself to swallow once more, she could literally hear her heart beating erratically in her chest, her pulse raced as he moved closer, his eyes were trained on her lips and Martha swore she had never felt this strung up, every nerve in her body grew stiff, her head was telling her to move, to make sure this man’s lips didn’t get to hers because the consequence of such an action would be devastating to her and everything she had always thought she would stand for. But he body, this damned human flesh that was just as persuasive as her head, if not more, ached to know what it would feel like to have those lips against hers, if his kiss would be just as scorching as his words or his touch.

Her courage failed her and once again, her eyes fluttered close to avoid that damned beastly look in his eyes and maybe prepare her for the inevitable as she felt his breath against her skin. A light current zipped through her body as she felt his lips brush against the corner of hers, she shuddered at the contact, who would have thought a touch so little could create such a reaction? His kiss was sure to have quite the effect. The next thing she felt was his breath against her earlobe as he whispered, “Since you asked so nicely….”

What the….before the thought could be completed, Martha found herself alone. He had let go of her. Her eyes flew open and she had to blink a couple of times to assure herself that this wasn’t some funny dream. Her ‘dream man’ was standing a good distance from her and as if to solidify the fact that he had indeed uttered the words she heard, eh spoke again, “You should put something on, we wouldn’t want anyone else seeing you dressed in…..” his eyes took another long, animalistic survey of her body so that she knew all of the vibes he seemed to be sending her way were indeed true, “…that.” He completed simply. He slipped a hand into his pocket and walked away in that confident gait that usually sickened her, but this time, she was much too shocked to even conjure any other emotion.

In all her life, Martha had never felt this conflicted; she was so conflicted she couldn’t even decide on which of the emotions were engulfing her the most. Shock progressed into shame, she was ashamed of her reaction to him, even more ashamed of the fact that he probably knew that she was hopelessly attracted to him, that she had so easily given away her own emotions and his were still unclear to her, shame gave way to anger. Alex was such a manipulative bastard! He was too good at it, he looked like a man that knew just how to string a woman along, and she? What did she know about men and ways to get their attention even less control it? Absolutely nothing! That was why she was making an utter fool of herself in the presence of this slick Lagos boy.

She gripped the edge of the towel around her and marched into the house, she found Alex in the kitchen, leisurely munching on a slice of pizza and her anger charged up, she had half the mind to walk up to him and demand to know exactly what game he was playing, but she wasn’t about to give him even more reason to mock her. So, she kept her mouth shut and went over to the guestroom where she had dropped her clothes. He might have won today, but she would get back at him another day, she just needed to find out how
