ah there seems to be a lot of you tube guru's here. nna abeg am having issues with playing flv videos. they do not play but the audio works. av tried a lot of players and even almighty vlc does not do the job.

what may be the problem. and i have tried the videos on both windows and linux too. the video either does not play or plays and hangs like a scratched cd or a buffering video. av tried converting too and the result is the same

Nope, its sole boot, 1 hard drive.

U knw wat, iv an idea. Get a partition software, or rather even d diskpart utility dt comes wit vista. Partiton ur drive in windows, just specify a very large partition using most of d visible c drive leaving maybe 500mb or 1gb in d other partition. (Note dis shld be possible if ur recovery is in a factory partition n locked so as to be unaccesible in windows)

Restart so windows can register d partitions. U must hav labeled them while partitioning so u knw d large partition's id.

Then try d above normal way n try n install xp in dt partition u made. U still hav 2 deal wit sata issues etc.

Try it if u ready 2 let go of ur vista install. Am not vouching 4 dis o. But it works in theory/logic. I will try it myself n see.

@ all d lsof program did work. Its 236 kb in synaptic. D syntax is sudo lsof -i nP | grep 8080

Or wateva port u want 2 knw wat app is using. In my case it was a long 4gotten proxy app i pulled 4 some experiments. Funny though it was not running but it bind (bad english) 2 port 8080. I uninstalled it n problem solved

Hmmn, d loss was total o! Everything dt was on d drive except d ubuntu n installed apps. Dt was last week.
About 20gb. I was browsing n music n i minimised d browser n saw my wallpaper was blank n pc was sorta slow. I restarted n saw d thing had gone back 2 like a fresh install! Thank God d installed apps r still there.

oh d bloke has left my end jare. he wanted to yank the thing but i told him not to as i would solve it. Hmnnn, well i did check the alsa mixer in terminal and nothing was muted. dunno oh. lspci did list the card too. next time i see him i will continue that thing.

weaver wat do u think caused my data loss? really strange.

then id really appreciate help with that issue with ripping cd's. i pulled grip, asunder, audio cd extractor in terminal but they all do not work. for 1 they refuse to rip mp3's. i can play mp3's so i guess the codecs are present. whenever i start ripping into any format they simply close.

that port thing is realy annoying and av tried restarting and all that to no avail. been googling too. the closest av come to an answer is a prog called lsof. am yet to download it sha, will try that too. its supposed to be able to show u wat application is using what port.


i spend my lesure time with ubuntu dese days so am always full of issues. i was trying to co-opt a new desciple today and i suceeded only so fatr. his install had no sound so he was discouraged.

the thing is the sound card is an intel/ conexant ac97 audio thingy. the system actually sees the card.
lspci, lsmod | grep all give valid answers, even in the sound settings the card is right there as seen with its full name for alsa,

but no sound. iv tried to modprobe but i dunnowats happening o!n even terminal commands aint working e.g update-modules says no such cmd and so on and so forth.

PLS IF U KNW HOW TO WAKE THE THING PLS TELL ME

Hmmn well lynx extract d file open it and read d readme and install files! D key is usually there though i suspect u probably need 2 get cmake and checkinstall. Usually d prob when compiling is a pain. They inna synaptic.

But then d web page u got it from shld state if there are dependencies. N.b. Funny u mention qt, i was tryin 2 get qt4 dis morning and d page was missing frm nokia webpage. 3 shld already be installed anyway, it gets installed when setting up ur install/ its in synaptic too.

That shld work, if not look at d rootnoverify line, change to (1,0) from (0,0)
D chainloader line to chainloader +1
