Hello guys,

Since we got married it’s been one quarrel into another. Last Sunday I dressed in Jean and Long sleeve T shirt for Church and on sighting what I was wearing my wife yelled “Why will you be wearing this to Church?! We will not sit together ooh!!”

I felt dumbfounded but didn’t utter a word. On getting to Church I went to sit separately.

Is this right coming from a wife?
Op, i wld have suggested u let her have her way sometimes and see how it goes. Like the scenerio u painted last, ur response shld have been ' ok sweety, but what wld you have me wear?' . Then she wld give you an option, which might not be bad. Then both of u go to churh happily. Shikenah

LESSON 19

SUNDAY 7TH JANUARY, 2018

*TOPIC: GAMBLING*

OPENING PRAYER
Father, deliver me and my fellow believers from the evil spirit of covetousness. Help us to be content with our resources.

MEMORY VERSE: Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13:5

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Timothy 6:6-12

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

INTRODUCTION:

The word gamble means “to risk something of value on an outcome that depends on chance”. Other related activities to gambling are betting, lotto/lottery, gaming, casinos, ‘money doubling’ and ‘get rich quick’ programmes, among others. Because the outcomes of these activities “depend on chance” and doing them involves “risk”, then, by definition, they are all gambling. Although, the Bible does not specifically condemn gambling, betting, or the lottery, it does warn us, however, to stay away from the love of money (1Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5). Scripture also encourages us to stay away from attempts to “get rich quick” (Proverbs 13:11; 23:5; Ecclesiastes 5:10). Gambling most definitely is focused on the love of money and undeniably tempts people with the promise of quick and easy riches. Jesus warns us against letting riches get in the way of our spiritual benefit (Mark 4:19; 10:25) and that we cannot serve both God and money (Luke 16:13).

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Timothy 6:6-12

Lack of contentment or satisfaction could lead to dangers. Therefore, Apostle Paul warned believers beforehand:

i. It leads into temptation and snare.1Tim.6:9a

ii. It produce foolish and hurtful list. 1Tim 6:9b.

iii. It drowns men(women inclusive) in destruction and perdition. 1Tim 6:9c

iv. It leads the victims to err from faith. 1Tim.6:10b

v. It is like arrow that Pierces many hearts with many sorrows. 1Tim. 6:10c

How can believers be free from the problem of lack of contentment?

LESSON OUTLINES

1. Instances of gambling in the bible

2. Reasons for gambling and its consequences

3. Biblical counsel for believers

INSTANCES OF GAMBLING IN THE BIBLE

Staking of riddle or casting lot was found in the Bible:

i. Samson staked a riddle for thirty change of garment Judges 14:12-13

ii. The soldiers cast lot over the garment of Jesus John 19:24.

iii. Casting lot was used as option to select between the sacrificial goat and scape goat.(Leviticus 16:cool.

iv. Joshua cast lots to determine the allotment of land to the various tribe (Joshua 18:10).

v. Nehemiah cast lots to determine who would live inside the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 10:34).

vi. Although people cast lot to take decision but best decisions are those taking by the Lord or guided by the Holy Spirit.

vii. The lots is cast into the lap, but decision is wholly of the Lord. Even the event that seems accidental are really ordered by the Lord. Proverbs 16:33

viii. Lot casting here is synonymous to testing of luck or to gain material wealth.

ix. Lot casting has to do with making a decision from alternatives from the Biblical perspective and not for “luck” or “chance” or to make quick money.

The Bible message says. “Make your motions and cast your votes, but God has the final say” Pro 16:33

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Why do peoples gamble?

REASONS FOR GAMBLING AND ITS CONSEQUENCES

i. Love of money – people test their luck with numbers to get money. However such people are mostly empty (Ecclesiastes 5:10-15).

ii. Covetousness for material gains or what money can buy. Many gamblers and lottery player are deep in material gains which God forbids. (Exodus 20:17; 1Timothy 6:10).

iii. Those who engage in get-rich-quick schemes stand the risk of loosing everything. Do not set your eyes on that which is not real, riches certainly make themselves wings and fly away.

iv. Studies show that many lottery winners ended up in worse financial situation after the jackpot. Apostle Paul wrote”… And they Pieced themselves through with many sorrow. 1Tim. 6:10

v. Those who are desperate of getting rich quickly believe they will always win (1Timothy 6:9; Proverbs 1:32).”…. Drowned men in destruction and perdition 1Tim 6:9

BIBLICAL COUNSEL FOR BELIEVERS

i. God wants His people to prosper (Psalm 35:27; 3John 2) and to earn their money honestly by working hard (2Thessalonians 3:10). We ought to gain wealth through diligence, as a gift from the Lord: “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth” (Proverbs 10:4).

ii. Jesus teaches, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money (Luke 16:13). Do not join the multitude to do evil (Exodus 23:2).

iii. In 1Timothy 6:10, we find the famous warning that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Proceeds from gambling/lottery/betting do not please God (Proverbs 13:11). God is sovereign and will provide for the needs of the church through honest means.

iv. Money and material wealth should not be the primary pursuit of a believer, rather it should be the kingdom of God and righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

v. Money should not be wasted. Excess money should be saved for future needs or given to the needy and the Lord’s work, not gambled away (Proverbs 19:17; Exodus 35:5).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

What should believers do with excess cash/money at hand?

SUMMARY:

Do not gamble your money, materials and life.

CONCLUSION:

Be satisfied with your resources and believe God for increase.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Father, prosper me in your own way and time.

STRONGER THAN YOUR ENEMIES.Part 1.
(Majorly excerpts of message byPastor E.A.Adeboye at January 2018 HolyGhost Service 5,January at New Arena ,Shimawa,Redemption Camp).

“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:31‬ KJV.
“And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭105:24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Bible Passage:Luke 11:21-23.

The Lord is speaking here about two categories of people :
1.Strong man well armed and defending his own territory
2.Stronger fellow comes and plunder him
Joel 3:10 "Let the weak say I am strong"
Plan of God is for all of us is to be strong
Psalm 105:27.

Here are some areas of strength required of us:
1.Physical strength:Prayer of faith will heal the sick.You will live in divine health.
Exodus 15:26 if you obey God you will not be sick.
2.Materially:Genesis 33:4-9 Esau got crumbs of blessing from Isaac but he got enough.The least person in the house o God should have enough.
3.Spiritually :He wants every member of His church to be strong and bold.
2 Kings 1:9-12- only one single portion of anointing called down fire.

-It is good to be strong but it is better to be stronger.It is better that you become a carrier of miracles than just experiencing miracles
(Mark 16:18).
Peter: was a carrier of miracles :Acts 3:6-8..In the name of Jesus Christ and walk.
-It is good you have enough but better if you have more than enough to give and make others rich, be a blessing to others (2 Kings 4:1-7).
-"I decree your hand will never lack"
-Spiritually God expects you not just to be free but to command demons and they will obey you (Acts 16:16-18).
"I command every demon around you to be silenced in Jesus name"
Begin to lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.
God can even use your enemies to fight for you.
"Relax your victory is not negotiable."

What to do to be stronger than your enemies:

1.You must be supported by the Strongest Himself (Romans 8:31,Psalm 24:7-10).
Phil.2:9-11 at the name of Jesus every knee must bow.,not by your power but by the Spirit of God Zechariah 4:6.

2.You must be connected to the One who is never tired.1 Samuel 17:41-51
David was a giant killer,Rescued the sheep from Lion,Bear and rescued Israel from Goliath.
2Samuel 21:15-17- David grew faint and tired but for God.
Exodus 17:8-13-Moses' hands were held up because he was tired but God is never tired.
Isaiah 49:28-31 God is never weary and tired.
As you are connected yourself to Him, you will not know what is called tiredness again.Amen.

3.We must be inhabited by the Greatest ( 1 John 4:4)-When you are inhabited by the power of God, the power to do the impossible becomes available. Ephesians 3:20.
Demons will be hearing the voice of God in you.
1 Peter 4:11-speak as an oracle of God.What is inside of you will dictates what comes out of you.
God says to you:
(Forget the past, It is a new day)
(Keep knocking all doors will opened this year)

Procedure on this rescue mission:
1.Aggressive praise (2 Chronicles 20-25)
Praise alone gave victory to Jehoshaphat.
John 4:23-24-Worship in Spirit and in truth.
2.Aggressive prayers (Matthew 15:21-28).
3.Aggressive giving (Luke 6:38)
4.Your faith must be Aggressive (Mark 11:22-24)

Conclusion:
“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.”‭‭ Isaiah‬ ‭60:1‬.

ONLY BELIEVE

Memorise : He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.- John 3:18

Read : Romans 8:31-39

8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.

8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or unclothedness, or peril, or sword?

8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

MESSAGE :

Whenever I ruminate over the many-sided blessings embedded in the Good News that came through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, my heart is filled with great joy. I equally find it fascinating that no elaborate process involving complexities is required for us to access these blessings. Jesus did the hard work and made things simple for us.

One of such blessings is freedom from condemnation. The righteous judgment of God against sin has brought all of mankind under condemnation. This is the reason why no man can escape the pain of guilt that results from sin, or the consequences that follow it. Romans 3:23 says,

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God,”

Romans 6:23 further says,

“For the wages of sin is death,”

However, the Good News is that Jesus Christ gives us freedom from the condemnation that had put a seal on the destiny of all mankind. In Romans 8:1, this Good News says,

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Those who are in Christ Jesus can now live a life free from guilt of sin or the feeling of inadequacy resulting from past misdeeds. Their conscience is liberated from condemnation because they know their sins have been washed away by the precious blood of Jesus (Revelation 1:5). What does it take to access this blessings of freedom? Only Believe!

Believe in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, believe He is who He says He is, and believe in the work of salvation He has completed. How do you know you truly believe all these? When your actions and confessions reflect what you claim to believe, that is when you truly believe.

Another blessing of the Good News that you can have access to by faith is the truth that Jesus Christ, though rich, became poor, so that through His poverty, you might be rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). Your faith in this article of the Good News will prevent you from doing diabolical or criminal things to get rich, because you know that your prosperity lies in the sacrificial life that the Master has lived.

Believing in the words and works of Jesus gives us contentment, the absence of which brings many sorrows to those who want to be rich by any means (1 Timothy 6:6-10).

Beloved, do you believe all these? If you do, live your life by the ideas of the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will forever be free from condemnation, now and in eternity.

PRAYER POINT:
Father, please help me to live according to Your will, so that I may not be condemned with this world. Grant me grace not to lose sight of the words and works of Jesus. Amen.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR :
Genesis 8-10;
Revelation 3:7-22

HYMN 10: MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE

1. My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Saviour divine!
Now hear me while I pray,
Take all my guilt away,
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine!

2. May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire!
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be,
A living fire!

3. While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my guide;
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away,
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.

4.Whenlife’s swift race is run,
Death’s cold work almost done
Be near to me.
Blest Saviour, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove;
Oh, bear me safe above,
A ransomed soul!

THE OVERCOMERS

Memorise : And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call. - Joel 2:32

Read : Revelation 21:1-7

21:1. And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

21:2. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

21:3. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

21:4. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

21:5. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

21:6. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

21:7. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

MESSAGE :

Since the advent of sin into this world, life has become a battle for mankind. In the battle of life, one is either an overcomer or a victim. My prayer for you is that you will live the rest of your life as an overcomer in Jesus’ Name.

Today’s memory verse expressly reveals to us the secret of overcoming in the battle of life:

“…whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered:”

However, the truth in this verse of scripture throws up this question:

“How then shall they call on him whom they have not believed?” Romans 10:14

Therefore, before you can overcome by calling on the Name of the Lord, you need to first believe in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ and in His finished work on the cross of Calvary. When you believe this and you confess so with your mouth, you become “born of God”. Here is what the Bible, in 1 John 5:4-5, says about those who are born of God:

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

Living the reality of being an overcomer in this world means that you daily experience the victory that Christ has obtained for you over the enemies of your body, soul and spirit. It means living your life everyday as having been delivered from the power of sin, and when you overcome sin, you have invariably overcome death, which is at the pinnacle of the battle of life. James 1:15 says,

“Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

Are you under any siege in the battle of life? Has life dealt you so many blows that you do not have the will to go on? Don’t give in to depression, and don’t contemplate suicide. This is a great time for you to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, through genuine repentance.

In prayer, call upon the Name of Him That is able to save, and you will overcome! Are you saved but still living under the shackles of this world? It is time to realise who you are, shake yourself up from the dust of pity and begin to enforce the victory that Christ has won for you!

ACTION POINT :
Call on the Name of the Lord convening any area of life where you have been experiencing defeat.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR : Genesis 5-7;
Revelation 21:18-3:6

HYMN 3: WHAT CAN WASH AWAY MY SINS

1. What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Chorus:
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

2. For my Cleansing this I see
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
For my cleansing this my plea
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

3. Nothing can my sin erase
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
Naught of works, 'tis all of grace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

4. This is all my hope and peace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
This is all my righteousness
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

Only a fool would think that he or she can exist independent of God, who is the Maker of the heavens and the earth and all that is in them (Romans 1:20-22). Moses, the servant of God, knew this and he consequently did not make the mistake of doing anything without God’s approval. In today’s Bible reading, he insisted on the presence of God going with them as they journeyed through the wilderness to the Promised Land.

There is this story of three fishes in the sea living under the threat of sharks. They went to the Almighty God to ask for help concerning the danger of death looming over them.
The first fish asked God for many eyes so that it could see sharks approaching from any direction and escape to safety. The second fish demanded for wings so that it could fly away from the reach of sharks whenever they came after it. The third fish only asked for the presence of the Almighty God wherever it went. The Lord granted all their requests, and they swam away happily. Not long after, sharks came after the first fish, and immediately with its many eyes, it saw them coming! It took a jump into a nearby pond where the sharks could not go and began to laugh at the sharks. However, the water in the pond soon began to dry up and this fish died. The second fish also saw sharks coming for it, because it had been granted wings, it flew like a bird out of the water, but only to be caught in the air by an eagle flying by. So, the second fish ended up in the stomach of an eagle, which was happily surprised to have a delicious fish as its mid-flight meal. In contrast to these, the third fish, which had wisely requested the presence of the Lord, went swimming about without any fear of death from ferocious sharks. It was basking in the protection that comes with carrying the presence of the Lord. When the mother-shark would not go after it, the baby-shark asked its mother, “Why don’t we eat this beautiful fish?” The mother-shark cautioned it against entertaining such ideas, pointing to the shadow of the Almighty God following the fish everywhere.

Beloved, all that you need to succeed and have breakthroughs this year is God’s Presence in your life. I therefore encourage you to give your life totally to God through Jesus Christ. For His Presence to envelope your life, you need to walk daily with Him by fellowshipping with Him in the place of prayer and worship, and by framing your every thought around His Word. If you are faithful in doing this, He will abide with you, and you will live in safety throughout this year and beyond (Psalm 91:1-2).

KEY POINT:
The God that creates is the One that prospers, and He is the One that protects. Seek and ask for His Presence in all that you do from today.

I need Thee every hour,
Most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine
Can peace afford.

Chorus:
I need Thee, oh, I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee;
Oh, bless me now, my Savior!
I come to Thee.

2. I need Thee every hour,
Stay Thou near by;
Temptations lose their power
When Thou art nigh.

3. I need Thee every hour,
In joy or pain;
Come quickly and abide,
Or life is vain.

4. I need Thee every hour,
Teach me Thy will;
And Thy rich promises
In me fulfil.

Memorise : Bless The Lord, O my Soul, and forget not all his benefits: - Psalm 103:2

Read : Psalm 150:1-6

150:1 Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary:

150:2 Praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.

150:3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

150:4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

150:5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

150:6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.

MESSAGE :

King Hezekiah declared a profound truth when he testified that only the living can praise the Lord ( Isaiah 38:19 ). Children of God, as living spirits, we have many reasons to be thankful for.

Whenever I consider the lovingkindness of God and His tender mercies, demonstrated through protection, providence, love, forgiveness, healing, good health and, above all else, salvation of the soul, I always come to the conclusion that indeed the Lord has been very gracious to His children. No wonder the Holy Spirit, in Psalm 150:2, succinctly instructs us to

“Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.”

This is so important that in Psalm 103:1-5, David counsels his own soul to bless the Lord in thanksgiving, admonishing himself not to forget any one of God’s benefits. In other words, there is tendency for us to forget all that the Lord has done for us.

Nevertheless, we have no reason to be ungrateful to God, because His goodness forever flows to us. Prophet Jeremiah testifies of this truth in Lamentations 3:22-23, saying:

“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Moreover, what is our joy as children of God? It is the assurance of better tomorrow: the assurance of better year ahead of us. Only those who are saved by the grace that is in Christ Jesus have this assurance. Declaring this assurance, the Holy Spirit in Isaiah 3:10 says,

“Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. “

Who is the righteous? The righteous is the one who has accepted Jesus Christ as his or her personal Lord and Saviour. The righteousness of Christ is bestowed upon such person because they believe and have appropriated the ransom paid on their behalf by the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world ( John 1:29 ).

God is saying to you that you should be grateful to Him for all He has done for you in the past, particularly in the just concluded year . If you remain thankful, your tank of blessings shall be full as you go into the New Year. However, not giving your life to the One who paid the supreme price for your salvation is the greatest form of ingratitude.

Therefore, repent and give your life to Christ today! He will be your Shepherd and you shall want nothing throughout the New Year and in the years to come. Hallelujah!

ACTION POINT :
Thank the Lord for all His goodness and mercies over your life in the past; give your life to Him afresh and renew your commitment to serve Him in holiness and perfect obedience in this New Year.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR : Genesis 1-2;
Revelation 1

HYMN 1 : NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD

1. Now thank we all our God, With hearts, and hands and voices;
Who wondrous things hath done,
In whom His world rejoices;
Who, from our mothers’ arms,
Hath blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love
And still is ours to-day.

2. O may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever-joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us.
And keep us in His grace
And guide us when perplexed.
And free us from all ills
In this world and the next.

3. All praise and thanks to God
The father now be given,
The Son. and Him who reigns
With Them in highest heaven
The One, Eternal God,
Whom earth and heaven adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.

Lesson 18

Topic — The Fruit Of The Spirit: Meekness And Temperance

MEMORY VERSE: “What will ye? Shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love and in the spirit of meekness?.” – 1 Corinthians 4:21

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

INTRODUCTION:
Meekness connotes a calm temper of mind, not easily provoked (James 3:13). The word meekness does not connote weakness. Rather, it involves humility and thankfulness toward God, and polite, restrained behaviour toward others. The opposites of meekness are anger, a desire for revenge, and self-aggrandisement. Temperance means properly, self-control, continence. Meekness and temperance shall be studied extensively, as parts of the characteristics of the fruit of the Holy Spirit, in this lesson.

LESSON OUTLINES:
1. Meekness
2. Temperance

MEEKNESS
Meekness is might restrained, humility and grace displayed. Human power under human control is a half-broken weapon in the hands of a child. However, meekness places our strength under God’s guidance. Meekness constrains and channels the power of our words and actions. To be meek is to recognise that God’s ways and thoughts are high above our own (Isaiah 55:9). It is to accept God’s worldview, reflecting the truth about the spiritual and the material worlds. When we are filled with the Spirit’s fruit of meekness, we will correct others with ease instead of arguing in resentment and anger. We will forgive readily (Matthew 18:23-35). Competition and sectarianism will disappear (Philippians 1:15-18). We will accept God’s judgment on people and issues.
The Bible mentions some peculiar promises made to the meek (Matthew 5:5; Isaiah 66:2). The cultivation of the spirit of meekness is also enjoined (Colossians 3:12; 1Timothy 6:11; Zephaniah 2:3).
Meekness is exemplified in Christ (Matthew 11:29), Abraham (Genesis 13; 16:5-6), Moses (Numbers 12:3), David (Zechariah 12:8; 2Samuel 16:10,12), and Paul (1Corinthians 9:19).

TEMPERANCE
Temperance is the ability to control oneself. It involves a life of moderation and constraint against earthly desires and fleshly lusts. Salvation gives us freedom (Galatians 5:1) which includes freedom from sin (Romans 6:6). We need temperance as defence against forces of pleasure and lust (Romans 7:21-25). Temperance naturally leads to perseverance (2Peter 1:6). Temperance frees us from a guilty conscience (2Corinthians 4:2) and helps us to find the liberty to love and live as God desires (Galatians 5:13). Temperance includes the dominion over all evil tendencies and may denote continence, chastity, self-government, moderation in regard to all indulgences. The Holy Spirit in the heart makes a man moderate in all indulgences; teaches him to restrain his passions, and to govern himself; to control his evil propensities, and to subdue all inordinate affections.

CONCLUSION:
You can be like Jesus in meekness and temperance. Pray about it now.

QUESTIONS:
1. Describe meekness
2. What does it mean to be temperate?

YOUR LOCATION MATTERS

Memorise : “He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame." - Proverbs 10:5

Read : Genesis 3:7-10

3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were Unclad; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

3:8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

3:9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was Unclad; and I hid myself.

MESSAGE:

Although God is much very willing to help you, before you can receive help from Him, you have to first settle the issue of your spiritual location.

In today’s Bible reading, when God came visiting Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, and He did not find them where he expected them to be, He made a passionate call to them saying: “Adam, where are you?” If God will help you, He needs to know where you are. Do you want God’s help today? If yes, where are you standing presently? Are you where you were at the beginning of the year? Are you stagnant, unproductive, unprofitable, and not making progress? In the parable of the talents, the fellow who received one talent proved to be unproductive (Matthew 25:24-30). That is however not God’s expectation of you. Some people are unproductive because they do the right thing at the wrong time. Proverbs 10:5 says,

“He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.”

There is a time for everything. There is a time to work and a time to rest. Rest follows work and not the other way round. Today, quite a number of people unfortunately go on vacations even though they have not worked. Rest is earned. If you rest without deserving it, you will be showing to the whole world how unwise you really are. When many children of affluent people, who never worked one day to earn an income, are bequeathed with great wealth, the next thing they think of doing is how to go on a spending spree of the funds they never worked for.

Beloved, where is your present location? If you are located in laziness, disobedience, self-will or unforgiveness, receiving help from God may be a mirage. If you are sleeping when you should be actively engaged for the Master, you are a shame to the Body of Christ.

The harvest of this world is already ripe and gradually becoming overripe. This is harvest time. How many souls did you personally win to Christ this year? Is there any significant improvement to your life compared to last year or have you lost further grounds to laziness, procrastination and idleness? Can you say you are experiencing progress? Movement can be sideways, forward or backward. May you never go backward in Jesus’ Name!

Consider your location and take appropriate steps so that you can receive God’s help this season.

ACTION POINT :
Before asking God for anything make sure you are not located in disobedience or unbelief.

HYMN 9: ON THE HILL FAR AWAY

1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suff’ring and shame;
And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain:
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

2. Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

Refrain:

3. In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

Refrain:

4. To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.
