Kanade21:According to the facts you posted here, what the Germans pay is nearly double what Nigerians pay for. But when you factor in the value of both the Euros and the naira you will discover that what they pay is by far lower and insignificant. 1 Like |

obi58: That's ok, and don't call me sir. Nigerians will pay for power if they enjoy what they are using. Till now, people are still being yoked with monumental estimated bills for very poor power supply in many areas and they are paying! In other areas, Discos are allocating their supply to metered areas where they are sure of generating their revenue but this is few and far between because in spite of the cries and pleas from Nigerians everywhere prepaid meters still remain a scarce commodity. Well, the problem is, power has been privatised, but the money needed to fix the porblem is massive. Also, as someone said here...out of 200million people, 6million Nigerians pay their power bills. That makes the money pot look a bit lean so to speak. And why won't DISCOS allocate the power to metered areas? Because that's where people pay regularly. Plus, we are generating 4000mw. We need at least 80000MW for 24 hour power. It costs $2.21 billion to raise 1000mw of power. What we are paying barely covers costs. As for the issue of bypassing meters, there will always be deviants so the onus remains on the discos to devise effective monitoring strategies to block those leakages if they are serious. Just visit any thread on this site...and see how people abuse DISCO workers attacked trying to stop people bypassing their meters. And it is a national epidemic. How much has been spent by the government in transforming the power sector in the last 5 years? Why is there no appreciable improvement in the power experience. You guys need to remember, POWER HAS BEEN LARGELY PRIVATISED. All government runs these days is the transmission sector. And the transmission sector is dependent on cash they get from the DISCOS....just like the GENCOS. NEPA has ceased to exist. Government did secure a deal to raise power to 11000mw , but so long as they keep on with the law that prevents DISCOS from controlling the way they charge for power...nothing is going to change. (It's just like government telling you how much you should charge for your goods if you were in business...and the price they force you to set is lower than the cost price..because people are poor) What is our current power generating capacity compared to 2015? Why has there not been a significant impact? Do you have these figures? Bad. And it is because DISCOS are only allowed, by the laws governing the whole privatisation thing, to charge for power below production cost. Thus no money to improve generation capacity. The fall in oil prices too hasn't helped us either. Why did the Minister for Power assure the power issue would be resolved in 6 months what he has been unable to resolve in 5 years? And you beleived him? See why some of us say Nigerians cannot read?? You people cry about APC lies, yet you can't see them clearly. 1 Like |

charliboy654: No, the fact is, you cannot pay N30 for someting costing N40000 NAIRA. It costs $2.21 billion to increase generation by 1000MW. Lagos needs 10000MW for 24 hour power. Do the math...and then you will see why power was privatised, and why I say the responsibility for paying for it falls more on our shoulder. |

Kanade21: The problem we are currently facing as a nation in the power sector is a self-caused problem. As an engineer, nothing stop us to generate minimim5000 megawatt every year but some powerful people will make sure it does not happen. We have the money, we can hire expatraite with our own engineers to generate and have well structured orgnisation that will put the nail on the coffin for black out in this country but the demons will not allow that to happen. Can you what dangote is doing in his refinery, if it federal govt doing that, it will not see the light of the day till now, my God help us oh! 2 Likes |

Thankful for social media and for the utility companies caring enough to tell consumers the reason behind the power outage. The solution to our power challenge will never be solved by the government. In the United States the government does not generate a watt of electricity. The government regulates and approves of rates that consumers get charged. The US enjoys a very robust capital market and the utilities use them. If you want an income paying investment you either purchase a bond or stock issued by a utility. Nigerian utilities don't have that access. The rate that utilities charge consumers are too low to make investors want to lend money to the utilities. This is the reason why the Federal Government has intervened time and time again. The consumers have very poor habits. They don't like to pay and they consume electricity that they don't use. Utilities in some instances have taken matters into their hands. They offer certain customers guarantees in exchange for higher rates and that has enjoyed some success. A nice start but we need better ideas. There has to be a collective will by us the consumers, the providers and the capital markets for the power situation to be resolved. The Government has spending priorities, the includes healthcare, Education and infrastructure. Without expanding the income collection rate and revenue base they will always struggle to meet meet ongoing obligations. Add power and you can see that the deficit gets even worse. The solution will come from the private sector. We can think Uber or even Amazon and apply lessons to power delivery. The demand exists and if we are willing to think out of the box we can make this a problem that existed only in our past. 1 Like |

Davefate: Well, Lagos alone needs 10000MW. for 24/7 power...plus a 1000mw of power costs $2.21 billion dollars. 5000MW would cost 12billion dollars. Our budget is 20 billion dollars. Plus, Dangote refinery was built for 10billion dollars. 3 billion came from Dangote himself., the rest came from loans sourced with the help of the GEJ and then Buhari government. |
Re: Darkness pervades the country as national grid collapses again by chris81964(m): 11:55am On Nov 09, 2019 |
Kanade21: Dangote Group has said that Standard Chartered Bank was arranging funds for the project. “We will end up spending between $12 billion to $14 billion. The funding is going to come through equity, commercial bank loans, export credit agencies and developmental banks,” Dangote said in an interview in Lagos on Tuesday. “Hopefully, we will finish mechanical (construction) by next year and products will start coming out in the first quarter of 2020.” Nigeria’s central bank would provide guarantees for about 575 billion naira in local currency for 10 years, with African Development Bank providing a $300 million loan. Trade banks from China, India and some European countries are also in the mix, Dangote said. |

Re: Darkness pervades the country as national grid collapses again by Nobody: 12:05pm On Nov 09, 2019 |
PrecisionFx: At the end of the day, the money still needs to come from the consumers...and having the states generate their electricity means that people living there are going to pay higher prices for power. Because I doubt any state or region can afford to pay for power without charging high prices for it.(and that includes oil prodcuing states.). It does not matter how much we rearrange the furniture...the issue of paying for power is going to be there...like the big fat elephant in the room it is...glaring at us. |

Kanade21: Aren't we saying the same thing??!... Follow the blueprint of GSM by bringing forth prepaid meters, setting up tariffs that will match up to provision... The issue here is lack of will to do the right thing... Citizens don't rule themselves. That is what leadership is all about... A good leader takes bold steps, regardless of blowbacks. 1 Like |

And I hope u are aware the reason why the Network Investment flourished Is because There Is no Alternative. Unlike Electricity which there Is an alternative OIL And Generator "Nigeria Exclusive" I can bet my balls that If Network was a Natural Resources, We will never have a good Network until the World Ends because those Bastards would sabotage It like they are doing with electricity. The WHITES are Inventors, They think critically before they created the NETWORK unlike your mumu people who Just sit down spending "Natural Resources Stipends" The thing Is Black People are Cursed and Gullible Wicked Entities, Which You are at the Front Row Seat from your Comments, Most especially NIGERIA. Kanade21: E be like say you be NEPA. Just for the mention, I use prepaid meter and my bills are crazy but I still recharge monthly irrespective. If you want us to talk about rights, all the power distribution companies will have more bills to pay if those who genuinely pay their bills rise against them. I can't count how many times I've had to dispose electronics because of bad power supply. I don't know how many times my wife had to throw food away because of someone's negligence. These are done without any form of apology from those concerned. The most the consumer do is to shout and keep quite. You and I can't deny that there is corruption at the top otherwise, how come it's taking forever to fix power in Nigeria despite the zillions been pumped into that sector. Someone is definitely profiting from our national tears. How do you expect righteousness from majority of the consumers when there is no assurance of a working system even if the consumers maintain there integrity? I have not even talked about the evil thing called 'estimated bill'. As for me, we have a long way to go if policy makers won't do their job without passing blames. |
