The FDA head said the drug is in clinical trial and the result of the trials on patients will determine if it will be officially confirmed as a Covid-19 drug...so it is on trial on patients not that it has been confirmed.

A new academic study, published on Friday by US scientific researchers, also said that chloroquine appeared to be an effective treatment, and appears to align with the findings in France.

It said, “Use of chloroquine (tablets) is showing favorable outcomes in humans infected with Coronavirus including faster time to recovery and shorter hospital stay…

“Research shows that chloroquine also has strong potential as a prophylactic (preventative) measure against coronavirus in the lab, while we wait for a vaccine to be developed.

Well, let indulge once more.

Trump or any president has NO BUSINESS dictating when or if the regulatory body should commence clinical trial. The best he can is to make appeal for expeditious approval.

In fact one of the biggest credibility issues the body can face is if there an impression that it's decisions are subject to political influence, hence the immediate rebuttal by the head of the FDA.

Mind you, this is my field.

Pls let's give this a rest. He goofed (as usual) and was corrected.

Clinical trial? Yes
Drug for COVID-19? No

Until the clinical trials are completed, you can't confirm it. 6 weeks is still a long time but worth the wait. Let's exercise patience.

He approved and recommend chloroquine as being powerful and also pointed out that it is showing positive result and they would make it available immediately.

If he had said what was handed to him, the chief of the FDA won't have to correct him immediately.

The FDA have made their studies and they believe breaking protocol might save lives. They sent their findings to the President and he approved them taking a shot with the treatment.

Trump also claimed that the White House has “slashed red tape” to speed up approval for vaccines and other treatments.

Trump said it is a powerful drug. Not a powerful drug to cure coronavirus. Just a powerful drug. He stated what it could treat. Malaria and arthritis.

He clearly stated that if things do not go as planned, the drug will not kill anybody because it has been used for decades unlike experimental drug.

The FDA was clarifying Trump's statement to prevent people misunderstanding him. Not correcting Trump.

Trump's words were very clear and self explanatory.

Approved for clinical trials. Ethical approval is always a prerequisite before clinical trials are conducted. Because this is an emergency, the approval came from the POTUS directly and not ethical bodies. Of course, these bodies are carried along.

Kindly read up how South Korea managed to maintain a less than 1% mortality in this outbreak. It's via extended testing and the use of zinc and chloroquine. I won't bother you with the mechanism or action.

So, the said approval is for a wide scale CLINICAL TRIAL and not for use as definitive treatment.

I hope you understand now.

Trump did not try to take any glory but explained to the Americans the position of things at that time. They have decided to commence treating Americans with chloroquine because of good signs they have noticed.

The FDA have not confirmed Chloroquine a cure for Covid-19 but they are going to begin treatment with it due to beliefs from their research.

The Presidency have approved them to start the treatment.

Our problem in this country is just misconception of statements. Trump actually said that the drug was undergoing test but it was being hopeful for cure of the virus.
