bigseank:Do you have to insult in other to get your point across? One thing I know for sure is that, that list is not sacrosanct. We have an Igbo adage that translates"you can never finish paying the bride price of your wife" that being said, that list is highly negotiable, and it also depends on the elder that follows you to go and meet your prospective in-laws. I've seen a list with a sum totally of 860k negotiated down to 120k. So please stop painting Igbos in bad light. 2 Likes |

/ I don’t think people are complaining about the bride price. The problem is the infamous list in which all the kindreds get together, write all their problems in life and hand it over to a suitor to purchase. I feel sorry for ladies from Mbaise. Some people are too scared to get close enough to know the truth. If she tries, the man will think he is being reeled in for the kill. / 5 Likes |

Igbochief001: Your insults mean nothing to me... I can see through to your frustrations. I understand how hard it can be to defend the indefensible. I have no Igbo In-laws sir, but if I did, it would have cost me a pretty penny!!! I have merely corrected the Op. I believe my point was quite succinct! I shall refrain from trading words with individuals who get unnecessarily touchy over tribal discussions. This is supposed to be a learning curve. Bye. 11 Likes |

One thing i could take away from my sojoirn of Nigeria is that the different regions dont seem to umderstand the way of the igbos, so they conjure up stereotypes. I keep explaining certaining cultural nuances to my colleagues here in lagos. they tend to tar the igbos with same brush - in what they percieve to be the collective Nigerian culture. Different regions for example, believe that since pidgin is spoken flently in their area, every igbo man they met must be fluent in it. - every igbo man from 30 must be married. no its not. - every igbo man is a spareparts or mechanic dealer - every igbo man must like money 1 Like |

What people don't want to understand is bride price is different from marriage list, marriage list is what's costly and huge chunk of marriage list goes to the bride's kindred or extended family not even her own family 2 Likes |

Farukshy: Fine yeah, character no....i have like 2 igbo girls basically begging me to marry them....I'm not going to try that, even my igbo friends, that didn't grow up in the east are breaking engagements and relationships with igbo girls to marry or date other tribes, i keep saying it, there's something fundamentally wrong in the up bringing of igbo girls, leave beautiful for who hasn't dated beautiful girls, be around beautiful ladies, you start to understand character trumps looks 8 Likes |

I would add that this 'list' of a thing is not obtainable in all parts of Igbo land. I hear about it in Imo but not in other states. Nigerians should have known better by now and not generalise. Culture always vary from one community to the other. |
Re: The Misconception About Igbo Bride Prices by VonSmallhausen: 9:52am On Dec 09, 2020 |
The article is on point. The bride price which is typically non-negotiable is typically quite low. The main issue is the list. However, the truth is that the list is generally negotiable and the negotiation process is typically driven by a number of factors like - The influence of the bride's family -- Generally if the bride's family is influential, they can waive most of the items in the list - The perceived wealth of the bridegroom (ask yourself, even in the parts of igboland reputed to make intractable demands, how come Policemen, security men, teachers, farmers etc. are all still happily married?) In summary, when the family and their kinsmen sense the groom can afford to pay they make ridiculous demands, once they realize the the groom cant afford to pay, they trim down the list to what he can afford. The key thing is the commitment of the bride to marry the man in question. Once she convinces her family and brings them to her side, they can always negotiate to something reasonable relative to the Groom's purse. 6 Likes 1 Share |
