Various Igbo bridges

Bridges in Igboland ranged from step bridges to suspension bridges and differed in complexity and size depending on the waterbody to traverse.

Igbos have always been staunchly agriculturalists being that they allegedly descended from the first West African farmers. This meant that they often looked down on both pastoralists and hunter-gatherers.

Despite this, it is almost certain that ancient Igbos would have preferred hunter-gatherers far more than pastoralist groups.

The focal point of a hunter-gatherer's mindset is giving back what you take in. Due to their lifestyle, they are usually more insular and keep to themselves. Again due to their societal structure, their beliefs generally warn of the destructive nature of greed.

The mindset of a farmer is sowing much to reap bountiful rewards. Everywhere they go, they build up settlements and bring development. In the forefront of their mind is the drive to innovate and improve to continue to reap in abundance.

For Pastoralists, the nature of their lifestyle can often promote encroaching on other people's territory and generally causing a nuisance. It's no secret that historically, annoyances that farming settlements often faced such as kidnapping, theft and land troubles tended to stem from more nomadic groups.

Igbos was not an agricultural society, an agricultural society means they had cows to plough the fields and created Sophisticated farm tools to farm. There is no evidence of that in pre colonial or in present day igbo society.

The igbos were Horticultural society that use simple tools like cutlass, hoe, rake and other simple tools to farm, though they were wealthier than the hunter gatherers but were in the same stages of development with the pastoralists.

On your point of land encroachment, land encroachment was not only a pastoralists problem but also was very common in the horticultural society which always lead to land grabbing or inter ethnic conflict that still persists till today.

In a way. In some areas they are.
Even though we have all been made to fit in the farmer society which has been promoted as ideal it doesn't mean there aren't people in the farmer society who exhibit the hunter gatherer behavior they don't necessarily have to live in the Amazon forest or isolated away from the world doing their thing.

And if you've noticed people with the hunter gatherer behavior in farmer societies are the ones who usually revolutionize the world example Albert Einstein and Jesus Christ.

Sorry to say this is trash.

The jews were never an hunter gathering group, they were a nomadic groups, even abraham, Joseph were all nomadic and pastoral people that owns cows, goat and sheep, they were moving for one place to another.

So what made Abraham and lot go their seperate ways, wasn't it because of green lands and water for their cattle.

Jesus christ was from the pastoral linage.

Semetic people generally are pastoralists and not farmers even till today.
Re: How Igbos Lived In The Olden Days by Shiver99: 8:16am On Jun 29, 2021
The unique egalitarian and democratic style not only inspired independence but an unshakeably high sense of self-esteem.

Igbos saw no one as their superior. If there were qualities about you that they admired, they simply sought to emulate it and eventually overtake you.

This was a shock for more retrogressive mindsets as we can see throughout the course of Nigerian history, as well as Igbo interactions with other African groups. The thought of a people who had no mental barriers that hindered their pursuit of success was frightening.

While in Igbo society this quality was admired, in feudal cultures, this sort of progressive behaviour could damage the very fabric of their societies.

An excerpt from a European traveller:

"True democrats, no one was better than themselves but yet they were somehow better than anyone else. This self-assurance was sometimes a little frightening. The Ibo men and women are so continually in the right and so busy proving that everyone else is in the wrong. They want to learn from us but only such things as may be materially productive as soon as possible. They tolerate us because they need us. They do not look upon us resentfully as conquerors but complacently as stepping-stones. What will happen when they can, or think they can mount it alone and no further use of the stepping-stones, no one can tell."

If i may add, you are writing like a manipulator, if i had not pointed out the naked dressing in the old igbo culture, you wouldn't have written about it or you would have said that igbos invented clothes.

Nsibidi is a system of writing.
I did not say they didn't walk around naked, yes most of them walked around naked but you're making it seem as if they all walked around naked and nothing else as if many of them didn't drape a cloth across their bodies which is wrong.

In the jungian cognitive functions the most intelligent type is the NT type and they are more likely to behave like people in Hunter gatherer societies or tribes. Just because the hunter gatherers rarely plant their food does not mean they are stupid, yes they maybe primitive but their hunter gatherer skills are still very valuable up to this day.

Valuable skills such as intuition, empathy and creativity which is the driving force of every great civilization and which is not very abundant in the farmer/pastoralist society.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAGjuRwx_Y8

It has been proven times without numbers that nsibidi isnt a writing language but a pictogram which is very commonly used among secret societies in the calabar region, it is indigenous to the efik people.

The NT type is not a personality traite only common among hunter gatherers but also among every human society.

The hunter gatherers were mostly using crude tools like arrow and bow and also their bare hands to get food.

Every human society have the hunter gathering trait in them because that is the first stages of development without which some of the richer countries in the world wont be rich thanks to tha traits.

My point is simple, the African society generally have failed to leave the hunter gathering stage of civilization

You are wrong, igbos are not conservative in nature. From history they v been liberal. I gues you are referring to the Nigerian state and those appointed by the Nigerian government.

If there is anybody else that wants to add or contribute something in the meanwhile, feel free to do so.

Unfortunately there is little investment in collating Igbo historical accounts in a comprehensive manner, so excerpts and images often have to be pieced together from hundreds of historical texts.
Thanks alot for this great work. Indeed Igbo culture is one of the best in Africa. If allowed to be alone, the Igbo nation will rival great nations like china, USA, France, UK ,Israel, Indian etc.

The Igbo sophisticated egalitarian system made social life dynamic and Igbos themselves very progressive and adaptable.

Ancient Igboland was an agriculture and trading hub, but many often don't emphasize that it was a manufacturing hub as well. Igboland was a land of numerous trained smiths and artisans, and their dexterity and tenacity often scared more timid neighbours.

Igbo smiths were actually known for destroying an entire local smithing industry in modern day Norther Nigeria in the past simply because of superior business tactics.

A British traveller compared the speed, detail and finishing of Igbo smiths manufacturing needles to the work of machines.
Another noted that the dyes that they used for their clothes was comparable and at times superior to that of the British.
Igbo products ranged from furniture, swords, various clothing to guns and so on and so forth.

The fact that Ancient Igbos covered less, didn't mean they went naked or didn't know what modesty was. It was just what they considered as unclothedness was different.

This is the mistake that for example, Mohammedan groups make of societies such as America. They look at young people wearing shorts and t-shirts or speedos and bikinis on the beach and wonder why they are 'naked'. However, those people certainly don't think so.

Igbos had a strict sense of modesty, but it was not the same as the lopsided sense of modesty that could be seen in western nations or Arabia, where men could go topless to stave off the effects of hot weather while women were left to stay in oven-like burkas and the like.

Igbo fashions were completely adapted to their environment the same as Eurasians, and their sense of modesty developed from there.

No need to yab them biko just give them fact.

Some ancient African civilized culture did not cover put totally in those days.

Nubian women and great Queen's moved around topless

Ancient cush didn't wear top

West african civilized women did not wear top

South African women didn't wear top

The only African women that wore top those days were north African women.. The Berbers, tuaregs,Arabs and co.Who later introduced there Arab culture to there southern neighbours and arabized them.

Women been topless in ancient Africa is not a sign of not bin civilized. The Nubians were the most civilized black Africans those days but there women moved around topless.

If the igbo society promotes the individual then why are there igbo unions and igbo monopoly ( commualism)

Individualisms does not work with unions of which igbo people are experts in creating to put their society in order and in check.

You need to go and understand liberalism philosophy.

This high self-esteem that characterised the common Igbo person was something that many people outside of Igbo society were unable to understand. Igbos believed that they were a blessed breed and this mindset drove their every action. This was something that they would simply not yield on even under threat or attack of invasion.

In the modern Nigerian political arena, this confident mindset is labelled as 'arrogant' while more slave-like and dependent personalities is seen as progressive or sophisticated.

Eastern Africans did not wear cloth but were the most civilized of all blacks.Eg the Nubians, black kushites, shiluks and co.Those that later wore clothes amongst them were the arabized ones and those that were later defeated by the Axum's.

West African women didn't wear cloth but were civilized

South African women didn't wear cloth

Only north africans wore cloth.which they later introduced to there immediate southern neighbours who spread it down south.

Wearing of cloth those days should not be used to measure civilization. The Mayans,Aztec and co were not fully clothed but had one of the best civilization.

Even under the onslaught of British Invaders, armed with vastly superior technology and numerous African allies, Igbos refused to bow. This way of thinking was just fascinating, once again stemming from the fact that they considered themselves a blessed race or chosen by god.

Do you know the meaning of civilization.

Aren't you civilised than the tribes not wearing clothes today.

How can you write that people who are naked are more civilised than people who were not, it is like writing that the society who invented bicycles are more innovative than the society who invented cars.

Is that not confusion and an attempt to distort history
