Some activists have demanded that the Lagos State Government must not allow Lagos to be burnt down again like it was last year. They say that they will do everything possible to prevent a repeat of the riots that led to the burning down of the Lagos DNA and Forensic Centre, the historic Lagos High Court at Igbosere Road, the Nigerian Ports Authority Headquarters building, several police and fire stations and several BRT depots, including newly acquired BRT buses, etc.

Here are screenshots of some of their messages.

EndSARS anniversary: Coalition urges protest organisers to have a rethink

News Agency Of Nigeria
October 15, 2021 6:26 AM

The Defend Lagos Coalition has urged organisers of the planned #EndSARS anniversary protest to have a rethink.

The coalition, made up of concerned civil society groups in Lagos State also said that such protest would be hijacked again by hoodlums to unleash mayhem on Nigerians and residents of the state.

Addressing Newsmen in Lagos on Thursday, Mr Nelson Ekujumi, spokesman for the coalition, said there was need for rethink, considering the losses incurred by Nigerians in 2020 when a similar protest was hijacked by hoodlums.

“As some group of persons and interests contemplate commemorating the anniversary of the #EndSARS protests with another protest, it is our conviction that such an anniversary ought to be a moment for sober reflection on the whole essence of the 2020 protest.

“While we recognise the inalienable rights of citizens to ventilate their grievances, we must admonish that it must be exercised with recognition of the fact that other persons' right must not be infringed upon in the process.

”In the EndSARS protests of October 2020 that blew across the country, though an agitation against impunity and lack of accountability in public office encapsulated in the activities of the disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), at the end of the day, it left a sour taste and sorrow in our hearts.

“The needless killings, looting, destruction of public and private assets that trailed it, most particularly in Lagos state which was the hardest hit, is an experience we will not wish to have again,” he said.

Ekujumi said that in the aftermath of the destruction during the protest, psychological trauma was also inflicted on people of Lagos state.

“We look backwards with pain and anguish over the unwarranted destruction of lives and property.

”Our major concern is lives and property of Nigerians. We are aware that the uncoordinated EndSARS protest led to anarchy.

“Assumed leaders of the protest lost their grip on the protesters which led to lawlessness.

”We will never again allow anyone or group of persons to destroy the Lagos state heritage,” he said.

He noted that at this stage, people should be asking questions regarding the panels set up after the protests.

“In obeisance to the government acceding to the five for five demands of the EndSARSs protests, state governments were directed by the National Economic Council (NEC) to set up panels of inquiry on the alleged abuses of citizens’ rights and where possible, award compensation and make recommendations

”These panels has been sitting nationwide. In Lagos state, the panel has sat for about one year and we have confidence in their ability to dispense justice in a fair and just manner just as it has already done with cases decided

“Therefore we need to decipher if the motive that propelled the genuine agitations of the 2020 EndSARS protest before it was hijacked, was not lost on Nigeria police, government and society at large and proffer the way forward,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Razaq Oladosu – Democratic Initiator, Mr Declan Ihekaire- Coordinator, Activists for Good Governance were at the event.

Others were Mr Elijah Ajanu-Ojo- Ideal Society Move and Mr Gbenga Soloki – Coalition of Oodua Self Determination Groups (COSEG) among others.

Instead of those posters on Twitter to urge the government and security agencies to monitor the planned protests and prevent a breakdown of law and order, they're discouraging Nigerians from exercising their fundamental human rights as regards organizing/partaking in a protest.

What we should all clamor for is peaceful demonstrations, not outright ban of protests like some political elements on Twitter are doing.

Brainless people.

The protest organizers need to ensure political thugs don't hijack the protests and thwart the patriotic efforts of brave Nigerians demanding good governance, accountability from our political leaders.

They've drawn your attention to the arson and attack on public and private property across the state.

This is evidenced, yet the phantom massacre has yet to produce credible victims 1 year later.

Many of you won't rest until the nation burns.

That Nigeria's political leaders place more values on cows than human lives, doesn't make what's wrong right.

Organizing or taking part in peaceful protests and demonstrations is legal anywhere in the world.

They should watch out for Ipob terrorists bingos in Lagos markets. The Lagos state government must mount surveillance in Igbo dominated markets like Ladipo and Alaba were Ipob terrorists sleeper cells are operating.

Stop this nonsense tribal comment. Most of the perpetrators of last year arsing are yoruba. Evidence are there. Please stop. It destroyed unity.
I'm a yoruba man. Born, school and live in Lagos all my life. I never support endsars protest. It will only lead to more destruction.
Falz, falana and Sowore promoting EndSars protest are all second citizen abroad. Their money are in dollar abroad. Don't allow them to destroy your Lagos. It's always easy to destroy but to build back is difficult.

Human rights are not constitutional rights.
So, "the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association," as stipulated by the UN, isn't part of Nigeria's constitutional rights?

Do you know what's called constitutional rights at all?

I know you have the right to protest, but your right stop when you hinder other people from going about their business like blocking the lekki tollgate or burning and damaging institutions.
I wish everyone that want to participate in this Endsars protest have their personal property damage if any institutions in Lagos is ever damage again, especially Falz, Falana and Sowore. Let them feel the pain too.
They are destroying many life's.

Escape from Mogadishu comes to mind, no matter how corrupt a govt is, uprising from the civilians can't topple them and restore sanity to the system, only strong institutions like the judiciary can do the job.

The reason why the govt won't stand by and fold it's arms is that protests like this can lead to uprising which can give the enemies (external forces) an opportunity to destabilize the country.

This democracy matter get as e be

The highlighted part of your post isn't what's called a peaceful protest.

I’ve been looking for where govt thugs hijacked the protest in this publication.

The govt want the protest to end by all means so they use one of their cards (political thugs), even when they know those ones only hear go.

The thug’s tried to intimidate peaceful protesters but they failed, the thugs then started damaging state property and looting businesses.

The govt knowing that they’ve messed up, sent the police but it was too late as the thugs they sent out are already after them. They used the last card which is Army.

govt that cannot enforce it’s own laws, that one na govt? Ordinary okada ban they no see am enforce, make dem never hear protest all dia pari go stand up.
