Professor Idowu Olayinka, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan on Wednesday revealed that the institution would expel about 328 students for what he called ‘shameful academic results’ in the recently concluded 2016/2017 academic session. The UI’s Vice Chancellor, in a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan Wednesday blamed the situation on the absence of Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination test before the affected students were admitted. Olayinka revealed further that the university compiled the list of the affected students following the “meeting of the University Senate held on March 19 and 20 to deliberate on the 2016/2017 academic results of the final year and non – final year students.” He said the affected students did not meet up with the minimum condition approved by the university Senate. He said, “One out of every nine of the 100 level students did not meet the minimum condition to retain their studentship,” he said. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/poor-performance-ui-to-expel-328.html

The UN says it has allocated 11 million dollars (about N4 billion) to help 60,000 internally displaced people in Borno and other humanitarian operations in North-east Nigeria. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said nine billion dollars (about N3.2 billion) would be used to provide life-saving aid for some 60,000 people displaced by ongoing Boko Haram crisis in Borno. The UN relief agency explained that the money was an allocation from the UN-managed country-based humanitarian assistance fund. The UN quoted Mr Edward Kallon, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, as saying: “The crisis continues to displace thousands of vulnerable women, children and men every week. “Many have gone through unspeakable hardship and the UN and its partners remain committed to help alleviate their suffering.’’ Set up through the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF), the assistance includes two million dollars (about N720 million) in support to the UN Humanitarian Air Service for frontline responders in the region. “This UN fund give us the flexibility to prioritise those who are most in need of aid and act swiftly for the good of the people of north-east Nigeria,” Kallon said. The UN said the North-east region’s humanitarian crisis, sparked mainly by Boko Haram’s years-long insurgency, remained one of the most severe globally. “In the worst-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, at least 7.7 million people are in need this year, with about 80 per cent, or 6.1 million, targeted for humanitarian assistance. “The nine million dollars allocation will help fund 15 projects supporting humanitarian rapid response in areas affected by large-scale conflict-related displacements, particularly in the northern parts of Borno, along the Maiduguri-Monguno axis. “In just three months, the close to 30,000 people who have fled violence in hard-to-reach areas are in dire need of food, water, shelter, clothes and medical services. “Additionally, the funds will help scale up the response near the border with Cameroon in eastern Borno – Gwoza, Bama, Dikwa, Kala-Balge, Monguno, Askira/Uba – and northern Adamawa – Madagali – where approximately another 30,000 have arrived following military operations. “Finally, the funds will also help maintain UN Humanitarian Air Service operations, crucial to reach and deliver aid in remote areas of the North-east, especially where roads are unusable,” the UN said. It explained that under the leadership of Kallon, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, the NHF is managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This is to provide flexible and timely funds for basic life-saving support, the UN said, adding to date it has raised 48 million dollars (over N17 billion) in contributions and pledges. The NHF is one of 18 country-based pooled funds and was launched during the Oslo Humanitarian Conference for Nigeria and the Lake Chad Region in February 2017. The contributions and pledges were realised through the generous support of Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, Ireland, Switzerland, the Republic of Korea, Canada, Spain, Luxembourg, the Arab Gulf Program for Development, Malta, Azerbaijan and Sri Lanka. Of that 48 million dollars, 33 million dollars (about N12 billion), including this latest N3.2 billion allocation – has now been allocated to various organisations in support of the humanitarian response in North-east Nigeria. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/boko-haram-un-allocates-n4bn-for.html

Military high command has rubbished speculations that there was no troops presence at Dapchi, Yobe State, when the Boko Haram terrorists returned 105 of the 110 kidnapped students of the Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC), on Wednesday morning. Rather, the insurgents were allowed unhindered access and exit because of a ceasefire agreement. The military authorities which made the clarification insisted that troops were battle-ready but could not confront or challenge the terrorists because of the deal reached between the government, the military, the negotiators the terrorists and diplomats. Theatre Commander of the Operation Lafiya Dole, Major-General Rogers Nicholas, who made the revelation, said the girls were actually released to the military at various locations in the area. He made the clarification on a live television programme monitored in Abuja. “As part of the deals to get the girls out… there were alternative efforts. Military efforts were also going while diplomatic efforts were on. At a particular point in the discussion, a truce was reached and a ceasefire was organised so that these girls are not injured and so that these girls are not killed in the military efforts that we are embarking on. And the terrorists having seen the efforts we are making decided that it was time for them to release the girls because the girls were also inconveniencing them. “And based on the truce that was reached, they requested that we allow them pass through to drop the girls where they picked them. “It was based on that truce, which is part of all military operations the world over; even that is happening in Syria and other places, there were times that you have ceasefire either to allow relief materials or medicals or exchange of prisoners. That same (method) was adopted here. We had a truce and a ceasefire was organised and then we allowed them to drop the girls where they picked them. That was the situation. “And we also picked the girls from where they dropped them. While some of the girls went home to meet with their parents before we got to where they are, we were able to pick some of them and were able to get most of them back to the hospital for treatment.” Gen Nicholas, who noted that the counter-insurgency operations is ongoing, however, pointed out that there is a break for now because of the ceasefire agreement between the government, the negotiators and the diplomatic arrangement. “There is a time frame for the ceasefire after which our operations will continue. The ceasefire is actually that we put restrictions in some operational area but other operations are ongoing in other areas. The only reason the military operations would not continue is if the terrorists agree to surrender.Otherwise, there is no going back on fight against terrorism.” Still basking in the euphoria, President Muhammadu Buhari has assured parents of Liya Sharibu and Dapchi community that she will not be abandoned. Buhari in a statement by one of his media aides, Garba Shehu, said his administration was committed to the freedom of the only Dapchi schoolgirl still in captivity as he was to the girls’ freedom when all 110 were in the captivity of Boko Haram terrorists. The statement read: “The Buhari administration will not relent in efforts to bring Leah Sharibu safely back home to her parents as it has done for the other girls after she was held back by the terrorists over her decision, as reported, not to convert from Christianity to Islam. “President Buhari is fully conscious of his duty under the constitution to protect all Nigerians, irrespective of faith, ethnic background or geopolitical location and will not shirk in this responsibility. “The president is equally mindful of the fact that true followers of Islam all over the world respect the injunction that there is no compulsion in religion. “To this effect, no one or group can impose its religion on another. “His heart goes out to the isolated parents who must watch others rejoice while their own daughter is still away. The lone Dapchi girl, Leah, will not be abandoned.” On Wednesday, 105 of the girls were returned to Dapchi by some Boko Haram terrorists. While five of the girls were said to have died in captivity, Liya Sharibu, the only Christian among them, was detained for allegedly refusing to convert to Islam or wear the hijab. Meanwhile, the Federal Government has dismissed allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the abduction and release of the schoolgirls was stage-managed as erroneous and extremely dishonourable. In a statement issued in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said such postulation portrayed the PDP “as insensitive, unpatriotic and unworthy party.” Mohammed said since the release of the Dapchi girls were negotiated by friendly countries and reputable international organisations, it would have taken a conspiracy of global proportion to have stage-managed the adoption and release of the girls. “As we have said many times since the abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls, no government is exempted from its own share of tragedies. What makes the difference is the way such tragedies are managed. “Whereas it took the PDP all of 18 days to even acknowledge the abduction of the Chibok girls in 2014, the APC Federal Government acted promptly and responsively when the Dapchi schoolgirls were abducted on February 19, hence their quick release,” he said. The Minister said it was unfortunate that the PDP that failed as a ruling party had also failed as an opposition party “going by its insensitive and crude response to the release of the Dapchi schoolgirls.” The PDP had taken a swipe at the Presidency alleging that both the abduction and the release of the girls were stage-managed for political purposes The National Chairman and the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Uche Secondus and Mr Kola Ologbondiyan – had at different news conferences demanded the probe, arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the alleged saga. Also reacting, the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha ascribed the quick release of the girls to display of political will by President Buhari. Governor Okorocha, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, maintained that Buhari’s commitment to the schoolgirls’ release justifies his strength in dealing with such national challenge. He noted that since the president came on board, he has continued to match his words with action. “There is no other way to describe the quick return of the Dapchi Schoolgirls than to say that it was a demonstration of high level of political will and dedicated leadership, because if the reverse had been the case, the story would have been different. He added that if the previous leadership had also exerted same political will or leadership, the Chibok girls would have perhaps quickly regain their freedom. Notwithstanding, the apex socio-cultural Igbo organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, described the abduction and release as stage-managed deals. It said it was the height of serial, inglorious pathological deceit and hoax the country has ever witnessed in the recent time. In a statement issued in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, by its National Publicity Secretary, Prince Uche Achi-Okpaga, Ohanaeze maintained that the incident wa a “good plan” marred by poor execution, asking rhetorically: “Which paradise on earth were the girls kept so neat for three unfriendly weeks?” The statement partly read: “The latest drama of the Dapchi Schoolgirls’ release is the height of serial and inglorious pathological deceit and hoax. In their bid to make unfounded and unthinkable comparison (with the regime of Goodluck Jonathan), President Buhari and his hegemonic Fulani cabal become antithetic as they are contradictory. “Apparently, in a hurried orchestra to display their high dexterity of quick response to the manipulated abduction (as against the snail pace approach of the then Jonathan’s regime), the “good plan” was marred by poor execution. “Over 100 girls appearing in new and neat dresses with their big bags of different makes. The thought provoking questions are: “Did all the girls dress for a religious or social outing shortly before their abduction? Were they allowed to bring their new clothes on abduction or were they taken to a boutique for their fine “uniforms” before they were brought back? “For the first time in history, instead of dropping them in an undisclosed point, the abductors brought back their captives amid cheers and jubilation from observers and even security operatives who were said to have been on their trail for three weeks now. “Which paradise on earth were the girls kept so neat for three unfriendly weeks? So, the government knows the abductors and negotiated with them even as they are still killing Nigerians in tens and hundreds?” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/dapchi-school-girls-we-had-deal-with.html

Divorced former Nollywood actress, Georgina Onuoha is filled with mixed feelings as she celebrates the 11th birthday of her first daughter, Nicole Igwegbe. The USA based diva went down memory lane to recall all she went through in the hands of her ex-husband’s family members. She shared a before and after photo of the birthday girl on Instagram and this touching story follows: “1 and 11.. how time flies.. Lord I am humbled. Thank you for your many blessings upon her life. Lord you favored me and blessed me with the most gracious daughter in the household of the igwegbe’s. Despite the many battles from the enemies of Igwegbe’s household, you showed me mercy and gave me strength. I became a mom in the midst of a raging storm“ . I was threatened constantly that “you will never marry my brother, you will never be a mom, you will be barren, I will kill you, I will rather die than have you bear my brother’s kids or step your foot in my father’s house, you and your children will be bastards”. For no just cause. Simply because I was an actor, I was dragged to every police station in Lagos, assassins were constantly sent to my home. I was shamed on every national News paper/tabloids like a common thief and was made an object of caricature because I was in love with your father as he did me. My crime was wanting to settle down like every other young woman. Through it all, I remained silent and pleaded my case before God. You o lord covered my shame and gave your final judgement. You blessed me with Chigozie and it’s been endless blessings since then. Lord continue to silence every roaring lion and enemies of our household. May every stone thrown at us be the solid rock upon which we build our foundation. May your grace never depart from her for she brought me comfort, peace and many blessings. Continue to protect her from all who have been fighting tirelessly to deny her her due place in her father’s home and the joy of growing up with her father like every girl deserves. Chigozie Being your mom was the best Job I ever had and continue to do till the day I close my eyes in perfect peace. I Love you child of mine. Happy 11th Birthday Nicole. We love you and are proud to be your parents.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/georgina-onuoha-touching-story-about.html

In a bid to saturate the pressure mounted on it by the commander-in-chief, President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian Army has given marching orders to its field commanders to immediately bring to an end the wanton killings in Benue, Taraba and Adamawa and other trouble states or face court martial. The Army also warned arsonists and killers in the volatile states to desist from their acts or face decisive action by troops. This is coming just as Makurdi, the Benue State capital, has been beefed up with heavy security ahead of President Buhari’s visit to the state today. A statement by the director of Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen Texas Chukwu, yesterday noted that the Army and other security agencies are already working assiduously to identify and arrest all those involved in acts killings “regardless of their disposition in the society, including government functionaries. “We have warned our commanders on the ground to take decisive actions or face court martial,” the Army spokesman threatened. Chukwu said the attention of the Army had been drawn to the continued disturbing, senseless killings and wanton destruction of properties in the three states and that accordingly, the Army authority “strongly warns the perpetrators of these crimes to desist forthwith”. He further stated: “We would like to unequivocally reiterate that the Army Headquarters warns the arsonists and the killers to stop or face decisive action by troops. Our Rules of Engagement (ROE) are clear on arson and murder. “Therefore, no such criminal acts would be allowed in any of the aforementioned states. The public is please reminded that when troops are called out for internal security operations, they are not to joke or persuade anyone”. Meanwhile security has been beefed up in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, ahead of President Buhari’s visit to the trouble state today. LEADERSHIP gathered that there had been heavy security presence in the state capital since yesterday, with armed security operatives stationed at strategic areas. In addition, security helicopters have been hovering around the state capital since yesterday to keep the place under surveillance because of the president’s visit today. When contacted on the number of security personnel deployed to the state for the president’s visit, the state Police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, simply said, “the president is coming, so he needs every protection. “No need of asking for the number of personnel deployed. The president is coming and he must be protected and so security men are deployed. That’s all”, he added. Besides, the state capital is said to be wearing a new look, as the state government has renovated some of the major roads, which were hitherto dead traps. Governor Samuel Ortom, in announcing the visit of the president, stated that during the visit, the president will pay a courtesy call on the Tor Tiv and chairman of the Benue State Council of Chiefs, Professor James Ayatse. According to the governor, the president will hold a meeting with major stakeholders at the Benue Peoples’ House, Makurdi, after which he will also visit one of the eight displaced person’s camps. On his part, the president of Tiv Youths Organisation (TYO), Timothy Hembaor, insisted that President Buhari’s visit to Benue State is so much belated and of no significance to the people of the state. He queried: “Why is he coming now, after he refused to heed all the calls from Gov Ortom on the threat by Miyetti Alhah to occupy Benue valley and carry out mass eviction? He told us to go and learn how to live peacefully with our killers. Now that the threats have been fully implemented, of what importance is his visit to us? Is he coming to see whether the plan has been executed? “The only thing we are expecting from the president is to recognise the Anti-open Grazing Law and order for its full enforcement. That is the position of the Tiv Youth Organisation. The APC government at the federal level is yet to make us feel the impact of the beauty of this government, as no federal project is reflected in Benue since the inception of this administration. The Benue populace is in a moody state because of neglect by a government they believed in so much in.” But faulting critics of Buhari’s visit to the state in a telephone chat with LEADERSHIP yesterday, the chief press secretary to the governor, Terver Akase, said, “Benue is part of Nigeria and so the president can visit the state at any given time he wants. Even if other people are saying his visit is belated, for us, we are welcoming him with the hope that his coming will bring and end to the killings in the state. “We are also hoping that the visit will give displaced persons the assurance of going back to their ancestral homes, as well as the support to the full enforcement of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment law. “As the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, we are happy that he will come and see things for himself- the level of destruction, the untold hardship suffered by the IDPs as well as the orphans and widows”. President Buhari’s visit to Benue State today is part of his tour of trouble states, including Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara and Rivers as announced by the presidency last week. The special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, had in a statement noted that the president decided to undertake an on-the-spot assessment of the various occurrences and to meet and console the communities affected. According to the presidential spokesman, the president called on all Nigerians, especially those in the affected areas, to cooperate fully with the security agencies to enable them curb the spate of crimes, bring those responsible to justice and prevent further occurrences Adesina said, “In view of recent terrorist attacks, criminal activities and communal clashes in some states leading to tragic loss of lives and kidnapping of 110 schoolgirls, President Muhammadu Buhari immediately tasked the Armed Forces and other Security agencies to compile comprehensive reports on the various incidents. “Having received and studied the reports, the President has decided to undertake an on the spot assessment of the various occurrences and to meet and console the communities affected. “From today, March 5, he will visit Taraba, and subsequently Benue, Yobe, Zamfara and Rivers States. President Buhari has been receiving daily briefings, and has been in constant touch with the Governors and has been updated with situation reports” Adesina had said. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/end-killings-or-face-court-martial-army.html
