Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has described the killing of innocent Nigerians by suspected Fulani herdsmen as senseless. The former president expressed sadness over the gruesome murder of Benue people in their homes by the herdsmen, saying it was shocking. He was received at the Makurdi Airport by Governor Samuel Ortom and members of his cabinet on Saturday morning. The Governor led him straight to the graveside of the Benue 73 who were massacred by herdsmen on New Year Day in Logo and Guma local government areas of the state located at Genabe village. The former President said he was in the state to pay a condolence visit and to express his sorrow over the killings. Obasanjo said, “It is sad beyond description and that is why I have taken it upon myself, having been to Maiduguri where we had a meeting of Zero Hunger Forum. If circumstances were normal, the Benue governor would have been with us. “So, I am here to pay a condolence visit and share the sadness of Benue people with them. “I felt coming to the graveside and laying a wreath will express my sorrow and my sympathy and empathy with the family, the Governor, all the people of the state and indeed, all Nigerians without any exception. A Nigerian life lost is loss to all of us. “Hearing that aside the 73 buried here, more than 80 others have been killed in different parts of Benue is even more shocking to I believe it will be more shocking to all Nigerians who will be hearing that. There is no doubt that we haven’t got it right. We haven’t got it right because whatever is behind this, normally in any civilized society we must get to the root of it. “And until we get to the root of this we will be burying victims. We will be assuming what is not assumable, because we must know why is this happening and who we must put and end to it. And somebody must accept the responsibility to put an end to this. If it has to be a collective responsibility, then so be it. But there must be an end to it.” “We cannot talk of a free country, a secure country, a country where we will want development to take place, where we will want to invite investors from outside and from inside and we are suffering this type of senselessness. “I do hope that there would be an end to this. Gorvernor, please accept my condolence and do not give up trying to work with men and women that have the interest of this state and the interest of Nigeria at heart to find a permanent solution. “This to me goes beyond what is on the surface. And we need to find out what is at the bottom of it. And that is the responsibilities of leaders and of course, they must leave no stone unturned to find what the root cause of this and put a stop to it. “We must know why it is happening and we must put an end to it, someone must take responsibility to put an end to it. We cannot talk of a free, secure country where we will want development to take place and investors to come to be suffering this type of senselessness. “Nothing can be worse than what we have seen here; graveside of innocent people who should not have died that have died. The living still have hope, but those who have died are gone forever. Those who lost their loved ones, what do we say to them? Since I have taken time to come here, I will try to see anything that is worth seeing but finding solution is paramount,” Obasanjo said. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/herdsmen-killings-what-obasanjo-said-at.html

Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has alleged that leader of the Biafra Movement, BIM, Ralph Uwazuruike kidnapped the IPOB founder and also sold him to the military. In an interview with Daily Sun, Prince Kanu said that Uwazuruike’s evil intentions for Nnamdi Kanu led him to kidnap him [Nnamdi] in 2009. According to him, this time around, Uwazuruike has succeeded in selling the pro-Biafra leader to the Nigerian Government and its security forces, adding that there will be no reconciliation between the two if Nnamdi Kanu finally comes out. He said, “Well, if the Nigerian army will release Nnamdi Kanu from where they kept him, I don’t see any reconciliation coming because Uwazuruike is a saboteur; he sold my brother to the Federal Government. “He had a hand in the military raid of our country home because he collected huge sum of money by the Federal Government for that purpose. “Uwazuruike always has evil intention; that was why he kidnapped my brother in 2009 and I gave him 24 hours to release him and after releasing him, he invited the DSS to arrest my brother at the Ojukwu Bunker which they did, all in an effort to ensure he was eliminated. “Uwazuruike must go into exile whether he likes it or not for betraying his people and at the same time insulting them. Nobody in his right senses will insult his people the way he did, that tells you how far he has gone to rubbish his own people for the sake of money. “He is the man that will tell few of his followers to use Biafran international passport and Biafra vehicle number plates while himself will be using those of Nigeria, have you seen this type of human being before? Like I said, at the appointed time, he must go into exile because he is not worthy to live in Biafra land.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/biafra-nnamdi-kanus-brother-emmanuel.html

A member of the All Progressives Congress in Imo State, Okere Uzochukwu, on Friday, approached a Federal High Court in Abuja challenging the extension of the tenure of members of the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party by one year. The tenure of the leadership of the ruling party at the state, local government and ward levels was also extended by one year by the National Executive Committee, NEC, of the party on February 27, 2018. The plaintiff, who said he was an aspirant to the state chairmanship position of the party in Imo State, contended in the suit marked, FHC /ABJ/ CS/219/ 2018, that the tenure extension was undemocratic and violated the provisions of the constitution, the Electoral Act and the constitution of the APC. The APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission are the first and second respondents in the case. He argued through Nnamdi Okere, his lawyer, that the extension of the tenure of the officials of the party at various levels was “ the primary function and responsibility of the national convention ” by virtue of the provisions of Article 13 and 13 (3 ) (ii) of the constitution of the APC 2014 (as amended). He stressed that the tenure extension was unconstitutional and undemocratic since the national convention did not hold. The plaintiff urged the court to hold that the tenure extension for the NWC, the state working committees as well as the local government and ward executive committees of the party commencing from June 2018 to June 2019 “is illegal, unconstitutional , null and void and of no effect.” He urged the court to compel the incumbent John Odigie – Oyegun- led NWC and others to vacate their respective offices with effect from June 1, 2018 , when they would have completed their four-year tenure. Meanwhile, the plaintiff also sought an order compelling INEC “reject, cease to recognise and stop dealing with or having official communications with the Odigie -Oyegun- led National Working Committee” and others effective from effective from June 1 , 2018, “for having spent the constitutionally allowed tenure of office.” He sought an order declaring that he, as a registered and card-carrying member of the party, “has been denied the right to aspire and contest the Imo State Chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress, a position he is aspiring and canvassing for and has spent enormous resources, to warrant and justify the extant action.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/tenure-extension-apc-member-drags-party.html

Just when it seemed respite was coming the way of Benue farming communities from the incursions of marauding herdsmen after the flag off of Exercise Ayem A’ Kpatuma, or Cat Race, a military spike operation to end herdsmen killings in the state, armed herdsmen early in the week stormed Mbatoho, an Island community at Mbalagh council ward of Makurdi local government, sacking over 5,000 inhabitants of the vast Island. The invaders who were reported to have quietly ordered the locals to vacate their ancestral homes without putting up any resistance warned that their intent was not to shed blood. Scared stiff of the threat, the locals immediately fled their homes to the mainland after which the well armed herdsmen razed several homes on the island and occupied the territory which is less than five kilometer on sea from the Wadata area of Makurdi town. Majority of the victims caught refuge in homes of relatives and friends on the other side of River Benue while a handfull of others staged a peaceful protest to Benue Government House, seeking the intervention of the state government to save them from being homeless. It was gathered from some of the displaced persons that the armed herdsmen started the action of attacking and taking over the island some days ago. According to the Community Leader of the Island and tax collector of the inner segment of the Island, Chief Peter Tachie, “the armed herdsmen who are usually dressed in black started their action four days ago in our community. “They came in their numbers with their cattle into island from Guma local government area and other places on foot some weeks ago because the water level of River Benue has dropped significantly so they could easily assess the island on foot. “Four days ago they started destroying our houses, farmland and food barns and also taking over the LGEA Primary school in the island and converting same for personal use. “As we speak no Tiv person is on that island at the moment, they have taken our farms and also uprooted our cassava from our plantation to feed their cattle which are also grazing freely on our farmland. “They have destroyed all that we spent years to acquire, so we have all moved into Makurdi main town with our families to seek government’s attention. “You know that we do a lot of dry season farming on the Island and as we speak all that we planted in this dry season have all been destroyed by the herdsmen and their cattle.” On his part, the tax collector of the outer segment of the island, Chief Stephen Guntu, said the invaders had warned that it was in the best interest of the locals to vacate the island in order to avert a major crisis. “They warned that we should leave the island quietly in our own interest. And since we know that they could be ruthless we all fled with our families. “Some of us are currently taking refuge in the houses of friends and relatives while John Kyuka who is a politician that comes regularly to campaign in the island also offered to accommodate very few of us. “We need urgent intervention of the government because they have taken over our farmlands and all the food we harvested during the last farming season. “Moreover, we do a lot of dry season farming and as I speak all the crops we planted this season are now food for the cattle.” Head Teacher of the only Primary School on the Island, the LGEA Primary School, Daudu, Mr. Ephram Otave told Saturday Vanguard that close to 400 pupil of the school had been chased out of school by the invaders. “All my pupils who are close to 400 have been chased out of school and displaced due to the activities of the herdsmen who have occupied the entire island and chased out our people.” Confirming the development, the Benue state Information Commission, Lawrence Onoja Jnr. said the invaders had completely taken over the Island adding that the government had also directed security personnel to push them out of the community before the crisis would escalate. According to the Commissioner “our findings when the Security Adviser to the Governor, Lt. Col. Paul Hemba(Rtd.) led a team to Island indicated that for sometime in the last few days there has been serious influx of herdsmen into Benue especially along Agatu, Guma, Logo, Katsina/Ala local government areas and communities bordering Nasarawa state especially. “It was in the course of this influx that groups of herdsmen some days ago went to Mbatoho Island, at Mbalagh council ward of Makurdi local government area and sacked the locals from their homes. “The people fled from Island and the herdsmen took over the community. When the team got there it was discovered that the herdsmen were feeding their cattle on the farm produce of the people and all they had in their barns. “Governor Samuel Ortom has been in constant touch with security personnel who have mobilized to the Island and have been directed to to push back the herdsmen. “Unfortunately the Exercise Ayem A’ Akpatuma recently launched by the military in the state to end the herdsmen incursion in the state does not cover that area because it is an Island completely surrounded by water. “However, security personal have been mobilized to the island to move the herdsmen out so that the people can move back to their community.” When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Moses Yamu confirmed that the Special Forces of the Police had moved into the Island to restore order. “Just today, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni held meetings with some Ardos (Fulani Chiefs) and Chiefs from Agatu, Gwer West and others, after which they went on a visit to the Island. As we speak they are yet to return to Makurdi mainland.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/we-are-here-to-take-over-your-land.html

There is always this teary feeling that comes with being a new mother especially when the baby is about to go through some certain process of life. Popular gospel singer, Benita Okojie, has just had that part of the feeling and she could not hide how she felt when her boy was being circumcised at the hospital. She disclosed that she was feeled with tears and could not stay at some point on hearing how her boy was crying. In her words, “Hey mothers!! I’m back. So no matter how much a mother loves her child she can’t wish away certain things. One is CIRCUMCISION. There should be a class to prepare mothers on how to deal with circumcision. I’m not joking! The day we went for ours, I heard baby A’s cry where I was seated at the corridor. I couldn’t take it. ‘Ara n ta mi’ I had to take a walk cause if I’d stayed a second longer, I would’ve gone in and carried him . I was emosh ehen.. maybe because i ate a meal that had too much onions earlier. That too must have contributed to it abi? “The whole day was a quiet one. I fed him, sang, prayed, patted him, tried everything I could but I knew it was painful. I had to get reinforcement from my mothers. So imagine my joy when he finally slept… Thank God for the grace that comes with motherhood! I heard that for the girl child, ear piercing is close to male circumcision. Is that true? So, dear mother’s what was your circumcision or ear piercing experience like?.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/benita-okojie-in-tears.html

The multipurpose singer has said she doesn’t do music to compete; rather she does it to fulfill her purpose. In her own words she said “I had a tough but interesting 2017. I lost my dad midway through the year and I kept a low profile afterwards because he was dear to me. He inspired my love for songwriting and music generally. He was my number one supporter; so, losing him felt like I had lost a huge part of me. I had to take time to process it and to be with my family. I’m happy to be back to work and I know he would want me to forge ahead and keep following my dreams. I don’t do what I do to compete; I make music to fulfill my purpose. Balarabe Musa, former Kaduna State Governor, has observed that President Muhammadu Buhari remains the best option for Nigeria despite failing to live up to his campaign promises. The former Kaduna State governor said there is currently no “qualitative and relevant alternative” to President Buhari and that this could lead to his victory, if he opts to seek re-election in 2019. Speaking with Punch, Musa said, “The performance of President Muhammadu Buhari since he came on board in 2015 has fallen short of the expectations of Nigerians. “In other words, he has been unable to fulfil promises he made before he got the votes of Nigerians. I can reasonably say without fear that his government has failed. “Nothing stops him (Buhari) from contesting. After all, every elected public office holder in Nigeria has the right to seek a second term. “I won’t bother myself too much thinking about that because if today Buhari decides he won’t run for a second term, do you have a better person now in Nigeria who can perform better than Buhari? “Up to the end of the Second Republic, when (the late Chief Obafemi) Awolowo, Zik (the late Nnamdi Azikiwe), Aminu Kano and so on were there, you could say ‘if not Awolowo, Zik is competent’ and so on. There was, at that time, a clear alternative available for Nigerians; whether you liked it or not, it was a distinctive alternative. “But today, where is the alternative? We are now in a situation where there is no alternative or it is difficult for the alternative to emerge because this is politics and election in which ‘money power’ plays a leading role. “So, it is not possible to find a qualitative and relevant alternative to Buhari at the moment.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/02/2019-presidency-why-buhari-remains.html

Nigerian celebrities have also tasted the ignorance of many Nigerian hospitals have they have been forced to watch love one slip away from their very presence. These are the list of the celebrities below Report By Punch: Eucharia anunobi: This veteran Nollywood actress lost her dearest son to the cold hands of her in a Nigerian hospital. The actress blamed the doctor for the death saying the doctor’s mistake led to the son’s death. “God has said that I should not walk by sight but by faith. So I am not looking at the event that has surrounded me. If I begin to look at the event, like Peter in the bible, I would sink instead of walking on water. My son died in my hands because it was a mistake by the doctors. My son is gone physically but not spiritually, so casting blames would not mean anything. People have told me to sue but my faith in God and his spirit and his word that is in me say that nothing happens without God’s consent. The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed has said a dragon has made away with $486 million, a loan given to Nigeria by World Bank. This was revealed to newsmen by Mohammed minutes after the money was received from World Bank. He said on landing the Nigerian soil, the money was made away by unknown dragon. Briefing Newsmen after Plenary, Lai Mohammed said that since the money could not be accounted for, or on his bank account the money was transfer into, maybe this time Dragon have made away with the money. “I think, this country is becoming a huge joke. First of all, it was the rodents that drove away the president and then we now have snakes consuming about N36 million and now we have monkeys raiding farmhouse. So, they don’t want this to be said but I believe that we should be very clear.” This is coming after a shocking confession of an official of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, which claimed that a mysterious snake allegedly swallowed N36 million naira, from the Board’s vault, which she made from the sale of scratch cards, another that of a monkey which swallowed 70 million naira. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/02/lai-mohammed-says-dragon-disapear-with.html

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-corruption (PACAC), Itse Sagay, has revealed what government ought to do to stop herdsmen/farmers’ clash. According to him, the Federal Government should first brand killer-herdsmen a terrorist group then increase its fire-power in Benue State as a way of stalling further attack on innocent citizens by armed herdsmen. In an interview with Vanguard, Prof. Sagay said: “My take on the herdsmen-farmer clash is that the Federal Government should now increase its fire power in Benue state and other trouble spots, because these armed terrorists are people who have no fear of any form of government, government’s reaction or position; they have no respect for the sanctity of life. These are just animals, wild animals. They are not better than jackals and animals in the forest. They don’t have any human emotion at all. “The only thing they fear is if you come with fire power, you kill a few of them and the rest will run away. “I think, with the military being brought into it and their moving into those forests, we are going to see a very sharp drop in their criminal actions. “I absolutely agree that armed-herdsmen are a terrorist group, as far as I am concerned. What their objective is, if they have any, is to terrify the population, to kill innocent people, frighten them and make them submissive and totally broken. Yes, they are a terrorist group.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/02/fg-should-declare-killer-herdsmen.html

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has appealed to Nigerians to desist from tagging members of ethnic groups different from their own as criminals. The traditional ruler, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, made the appeal on Wednesday in Abuja at a book launch in honour of the Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Is-haq Oloyede. Mr. Abubakar’s remarks were in reference to the currently raging deadly conflicts of farmers and herders in Nigeria for which Fulani herdsmen are routinely portrayed as the aggressors in the Nigerian media. According to the Sultan, whose stool was founded by Fulani Islamic jihadists in the 18th Century, there are lots of Fulani in Nigeria who are not herdsmen. To therefore stereotype a particular ethnic group as criminal is totally wrong, he said. “Herdsmen crisis is simply economic survival which needs to be tackled and resolved. We need to take the negative thoughts away from us; our moral level in this country has gone so low,” he said. “It is so sad that tens of thousands of people are dying everyday while our governors, politicians are well-guarded by security men. “We do not have statesmen, we have men of the state. We have governors who only see their immediate environment as their own. It is no longer a state for all. We need to sit together and proffer solution on how to move this nation forward,” he admonished. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/02/herdsmen-killings-nigerians-should-stop.html

The Nigeria Police Force has disclosed that it has lost nine of its men since the beginning of its operation to end the herdsmen/farmers’ clashes in Benue and Nasarawa states. Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Joshak Habila, who disclosed this to newsmen yesterday at the Benue State Police Command headquarters, disclosed further that 17 suspects were arrested in connection with the January 31, 2018, Gboko mayhem and the murder of policemen in the two states. Meanwhile, the Yobe State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of three men by Boko Haram after an attack on a public school in Yobe on Monday night. Habila stated that no policeman was missing any longer as everyone deployed to the troubled areas returned, either dead or alive, adding that with the coming of the military into the state, it was expected that those who were internally displaced by the crises would soon return to their homes. He noted that, following the security challenges in the state, the IGP, who was asked to relocate to Benue to ensure security threats were put under check, had been doing everything in his power to ensure that security of life and property was restored in the state. “As we speak, the IGP deployed 15 units of police mobile force, special forces, who were trained in special ways outside the country, the intelligence platform and monitoring units of the IGP were deployed in the state. “You are aware that people resorted to setting houses ablaze and destroying communities and foodstuff. Police deployed its men in communities under threat. We decided to plant men in communities and to respond to distress calls. Some mobile police officers ran into ambush and counter-ambush but, rather than discourage us, we summoned courage and those who have been linked with the gruesome murder of these policemen have been rounded up,” he said. Habila, who noted that the list of suspects arrested was swelling by the day, revealed further that those who perpetrated the crimes had confessed, adding that, in no distant time, those who were yet to be caught would be brought to book. The Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Sumonu Abdulmaliki, told journalists that the insurgents abducted three men in Geidam Local Government Area after fleeing from a secondary school at Dapchi, Bursari Local Government Area, in the state. “They ran out of food and carted way foodstuff from the school,” the CP said. He denied the kidnap of any student at the school. He said the insurgents carted away foodstuff and gallons of petrol belonging to fuel hawkers (black marketers) as they drove away from Dapchi on Monday night. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/02/herdsmen-attacks-9-policemen-killed-in.html

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has said there would be no campaigns for the 2019 elections in the state, if there was no solution to the clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the state. Speaking in an interview on an online TV programme, The Osasu Show, in Makurdi, Benue State, the governor said he invited President Buhari to console the people of the state over the killings and destruction of their property but lamented that the President did not honour the invitation. He said, as President, Buhari was supposed to provide citizens of the country with security but had failed to take the required action to curb the killings. He said: “For now, my primary concern is to stop these killings; to ensure that the IDPs go back to their homes and live peacefully. Once that is done, we can talk about other things. “I don’t care about what happens tomorrow. Even if I am not governor, I can stay back and fight for the right of my people. “When we visited, we even invited the President to come to Benue State and pay his condolences to his people. We are members of the party (All Progressives Congress, APC,), he is our President. If these people are attacking us, we expect him to give us security. “He has done a number of things. He directed NEMA to provide relief materials; he also asked for security to be beefed up, but I am not satisfied with what the Presidency is doing on this matter. There is no doubt about that. I ask for justice for Benue people because we have not been treated fairly.” Ortom said the attacks on Benue was an act of vengeance by herders for losing the 1804 Jihad, stressing that Benue people stopped them from penetrating the state through Sokoto. He said though he did not know the level of “support the herders get from the Presidency”, he was sure that the press statements by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association were issued by people living in Abuja. “These people have gone beyond grazing, it is about invading the land and taking over. All the places they have attacked, they have chased the people away and they are using their farmlands’ produce as feed for their cattle. “They are conducting international conferences, issuing press releases and writing on social media and they have come out to say look, in 1804 Jihad, it was Benue people that stopped them from penetrating from Sokoto to the sea. “This time around, they are not going to stop. They will make sure that they mobilise all Fulani men across the globe, especially from the West African sub-region to ensure that they acquire arms and come and invade and take over the land. “Because they also said Nigeria is the only land that God has given them, so no other person will supervene on this land except them; that it is their own land, they got this land by conquest and we have no business staying on this land. It is unbelievable. The statement is coming from Miyetti Allah. “Well, I wouldn’t know about their patrons or the extent of their involvement. But one thing I know is that the people that have been issuing these press statements are known. They are living in Abuja, they are living with the powers-that-be,” Governor Ortom said. Asked why he has not met with the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, and Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, to call the herders to order, Ortom said it was the responsibility of the Federal Government to enforce the law. “Why will I sit down with them? We have constituted authority over this country. And it is the responsibility of the Federal Government to enforce the law. We expected them to have acted,” the governor said. Governor Ortom had been at daggers-drawn with the Federal Government since herdsmen killed no fewer than 73 indigenes of the state on new year day. The relationship between both governments was further soured by the remarks of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who, without any investigation, had concluded that the killing was a result of communal clash, though he recanted later, and the Defence Minister, Mansur Dan Ali, who blamed the killings in Benue State on the anti-open grazing law enacted by the state government. Since the new year day killings in the state, there had been several others, including those of policemen and operatives of the civil defence corps. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/02/no-2019-campaigns-in-benue-till.html
