Good evening, Nairalanders.

I hope you people are doing great.
So, I decided to go to a Lagos market, buy ingredients for stew and make a pot of stew.

This is what I could buy with over 8k.

Meat = 3k
Veg oil= 4k (King's oil - 2 litres)
Tomato and pepper = 600
Maggi = 100
Onions= 100
Tomato paste = 500 (5 sachets)
Curry leaves = 100

Total = #8400

I want to use this opportunity to appeal to Mr. Seun to incorporate into Nairaland bots that will track keywords used for online begging and block them.

Since some people have decided to foist on everyone bad leaders whom we clearly know have no plans for the country. Let's suffer together if they win but begging on Nairaland should be banned.

Wow,una dey enjoy for Lagos. Things are still cheap in Lagos, compared to South EAST. This food stuffs you bought for 8,500 in Lagos is worth over 15k here in the EAST.

We are really suffering here in the East. Buhari and UN should come to our aid. An average man can no longer afford to eat in the East. Price of everything has gone beyound the reach of the comon man in the East.

The media is not reporting the rate at which we are suffering here.

That meat is too expensive for 3k. Even live chicken (local) is 3,500 or 3,600. That meat shouldn't have been more than 1,500. Except maybe you live in high brow places like the island.

That meat is ok for 3k with today being weekend. Things are getting expensive by the day, its only someone who hasn't visited the market lately that will argue. Enjoy your stew.

By next week I still have to refill another 10kg cylinder that's another 9k if the price still remains at #900 .

Taking the total to #20,250 to fill my two cylinder under a month....

I hve done lots of calculations I have come 2 conclusion that it is better 2 eat at a small restaurant than cook it at home..

Although not all food... Food I eat outside. Rice, beans, yam, swallow.

Food I prepare at home noodles, fry eggs n bread, spaghetti, tea n bread..

OP with that ur 8k.. Am ok for 1 week..

You exaggerated the cost of preparing a meal by buying 4k oil when N500 oil would have been enough. The total cost of buying the stew ingredients should have been 5k.

That vegetable oil is branded and you will not finish it for this meal alone wink
So that is not an N8k meal and those who do not earn aa much as you will cook a similar meal for less. Luckily, apart from the vegetable oil, non of the other ingredients is imported.
There are some folks actually ripping off consumers who are giving them unjustified reason to do so. Government needs to meet with the traders and not warn them against taking advantage of the consumers.

FG, States and LGs must get a food price monitoring task force. I remember that the Buhari-Idiagbon administration had such in place and states like Ogun and Oyo even give standard measures.

The traders should not be allowed to fix price arbitrarily.
