Why do nigerians living abroad fail to come back to Nigeria even for Important things like their parents death, burial, brother's wedding etc? I also find it weird some remain there for 15, 20, 30 years without ever visiting home even if na just once.
They are struggling over there....shame won't allow them come back home

What is the relevance of coming to your parent's funeral when they are already dead? Your duty is to support them when they are alive and provide the funds to support the burial, prayers and the cost of burial. Why spend an extra 2000-3000 to be there?

Your children no go come your burial. Say amen.

The first reason is that it usually takes a while to get the right documents. Most times you have to settle down before you think of visiting your home country ( that’s why even for funeral of close family members they don’t come)
Another reason is money. You need some cash to visit.
You also have to understand that most employers won’t just allow you leave to visit home because they have company policies that may not be changed for anyone immediately.
Currently the security situations back home is another reason where families warn their wards not to visit for fear of certain circumstances.
Lastly some people want to make sure they have built their mansions and gather enough money before visiting home.
These are just the basic reasons why it may seem like some people take so long before visiting home.

All the write-ups here have been complete balderdash. I've been around the world and back again. All the Nigerians I did meet until 1990 around the time of the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union due to Gorbachev's perestroika and glasnost were in the academic world. In segregated USA, 9ja were always residing within the black community and felt at home. They didn't realise it was twilight any time. The educational pursuit was eluding them, what with low grades, whereas their compatriots were excelling. As students, money was coming from home because many relied on family incomes. Other than the initial annual tuition, room and board paid on my behalf, I recanted further assistance. Thus, one needed to achieve something to brag about during any visit home. I was always in Nigeria since 1976 excepting '79, '87 and '89. I could never stay away from 9ja. No place beats 9ja, I swear. I have been a full time scholar in 14 tertiary institutions around the world, stretching from 1975-95. I was living writ large, travelling within states, across borders, discos, legally got married three times (but not with any 9ja chic), had a Cadillac Eldorado, Pontiac Le Mans and Plymouth Fury III at the same time as a student in the USA, resided in dashing penthouses, always in western suit, never did any menial job, etc but always personally paid my fare and made sure that I spent my vacations in 9ja, and since 1991 alongside my nuclear family to be with my mother. There must be a need to be somewhere. The Love for my Mother and the variety that the Country, Nigeria has to offer, unequalled elsewhere.

We’re obviously not going forward as a country. This questions was asked before many Nairalanders were born and I am surprised in this day the question still lingers. No answer I type here will stop the same thread popping up in the next four years.

They are hustling. Home can wait. The frustration to find a good spouse can bring them back, but they’ll manage with the dating life that way. The life there is very different from here. Anyone with good money from a job will travel around the world for leisure as opposed to calling it a night in beer parlours here.

One story does not fit all. You Uncle is a 1 out of 100 storyline.
I hold a foreign nationality, yes I live in Nigeria cos I have my investments here. Unfortunately, I have to work to support my business. Not to mention the hundred of friends that I know who have had their lifesavings swallowed in this shithole.

I will never recommend Nigeria for someone without a support system here. Many Nigerians from diaspora who make it here have support line that enable them achieve success. A friend of mine got a good wife who built this empire in real estate. Another is into importation and doing well cos his family get involved. But, to rely on government projects to survive is a risky venture.

If your uncle had dared what he dared in the 90s today, he would be shocked. Those Indians and Chinese are given preferences over Nigerians. You can't compete with them because the hurdles are from the government and the culture. In Abuja, you can find a Lebanese Muslim achieve success faster and open more doors than you. They do not have the tribal hindrances that we have. Everyone identifies with them as opposed to you being denied a chance because you are Yoruba or Igbo.

If you have ever lived in a working system, the idea of Nigeria will surely suck. Nothing works. There is no control. Not to deter whoever wants to take the chance, but this your uncle's story is not advisable in this day and age.
I agree with you, different strokes for different folks. But I came back home after my programme without a back up or support in place. I started from the scratch, chased the likes of Chinese and Indians rendering my kind of service away. Now, my company has a great
share of the market. It wasn't easy but we fought hard, ultimately with God's help

Because this place is not for lazy people! We have to educate ourselves, find a job and be stable before thinking about visiting home. The family pressure at him is too much!!

Majority of them are very poor. Some of us here are better economically than them. Some are ashamed to visit home because they have nothing

There are high expectations from home, and they don't want to disappoint. Cos they feel ashamed

My uncle today is a multi billionaire. Cbn also installed the products at all cbn branches nationwide. Those mocking him back then in America are still struggling with life and living.

Similar story but not family.

Oga japa to US with family... left his homie in 9ja to pursue the American 'DREAM'. Several years later Oga pikin has to apply for federal loans to attend "PUBLIC" university. Oga's homie -(Mr. 9ja) e pikin got admission to St. John NYC; no scholarship .. Mr 9ja paid in full.. still escort pikin come American with e wife. Mr Japa regrets his life. Can't stop telling the story to anyone who cares to listen .. "After all these years in America my child still borrowed money to attend college".

Mr. Japa pikin dodge Nigerian poverty; go inherit American poverty. Some European countries offer free education, Nigerians with American citizenships are now getting their shit together - send to Europe as an American he/she will proly get into a tier 1 university. After graduation .. alele back to Nigeria. Give that kid 2 - 3 years e go blow for Nigeria. Lots of em in FCT, but as FCT be. People we "really solid" no like to dey show sey dem get levels nah until you get close. grin

Most are in the "abroad" not have not arrived the abroad.
What I mean is that they have not "arrived", they are still hustling financially. I fact when you see those your paddies shining for you over facebook etc you go shock say na normal hustle them de. They will avoid you sef once you call them that you are in town make you no decode them.
You then have those that have arrived abroad. Them don establish. Living fine. Those ones visit naija well.
So op, those you spoke about possibly do not have papers, are processing documents, don't have money or in debt and hence cannot stop work for a day to travel as the might loose their, cars, houses etc if they don't pay modgage, lease bills.

Everytime bills. Is Nigeria free of bills?

Or is Nigerian bills different?

Are Nigerian workers no paying tax?

Are traders selling free of tax?

At least, in abroad, you see what you are paying for. We can't say the same about my country, naija.

There is something called "mind your own business'. People naturally do what works best for them. There is no single reason.

Flights coming to Nigeria are almost always fully booked and most of the passengers are Nigerians abroad. Some don't even go to their parent's 'homes' outside of cities with airports and this is often with their parent's consent to avoid evil village people and plain users. I know someone that comes to Nigeria at least twice a year without stepping out of Lagos to his home state, not even for any family burial. Safety first.

Also, many Nigerians abroad don't make noise or do social media flaunting. It's the struggling ones that tend to do that to mask their reality. There is hardly a weekend you don't have multiple Nigerian destination wedding filled with Nigerians flying into the Carribean Islands especially Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Costa Rica etc.

Yes, some don't have papers. Some are struggling. There is no single bucket to fit all into. We have the rich, the okay, and the struggling as we have everywhere, being abroad does not change that.
Thank you.
You see Nigerians, we have so much inferiority complex issues. The pull them down mentality. Reading the comments, I begin to wonder why so many still want to travel out since its not always rosy out there. Everybody has his own reason for not coming home. Until they tell you, don't assume. Remove diaspora remittance and a dollar will be more than 1k overnight. They cannot allow them be with tens of calls everyday asking for money. Yet, they re here sarcastically insulting people who haven't yet come home and how they earn peanuts abroad.

Good Question. Part of the main reason why someone people decide to stay back abroad is simply because once you leave the shore of Nigeria, the normal Nigerian thinking is to acquire wealth back home, on getting there reality begin to to set in and not as expected.

Secondly, the shame of coming back not bringing anything back home is a problem in fact, a big one.

Thirdly, immigration issues change of statue from being a Visitor to an intending immigrants that one another big wahala what do you want tell your people back home of not granted?

Lastly, the good of side of travelling abroad is Social Infrastructure everything fall in other. But when you remember taxes you'll fear fear.

Add on.....

Abroad don’t leave life like Nigerians. They have good transportation systems sometimes they do not consider cars as a necessity plus the cost attached to owning a car like insurance etc .
The problem is too much bills and tax which most of us don’t pay here.
Maybe you're talking about the Europeans. (More emphasis on the Scandinavian countries, and the Core Germanic countries). Most US citizens dislike the US transport system.

As a MuMu on Bail that have stayed in 2 countries before porting back to Nigeria,
the major reason why so many Nigerian are stranded, and don't like coming to
visit their brethren back home, is because of only one reason which is ..............................SHAME!!! grin
