…say movie produced without consultation

Parents of the four students of the University of Port Harcourt killed in Aluu Community, in 2012, codenamed, Aluu-4, have urged the seasoned blogger, Linda Ikeji and Netflix, to suspend the planned premiere of their new movie titled ‘Dark October’ which centres around the murder of their four children.

The families through a rights group, The Integrity Friends for Truth and Peace
The initiative, TIFPI said Linda Ikeji made the movie about their late children without consulting them.

TIFPI, however, in a statement in Port Harcourt yesterday, the Executive Director of the body, Livingstone Wechie, said the movie that was produced without the consent of the four families has reawakened the already doused trauma caused by the tragic killing of their children.

Wechie said: “The attention of the four bereaved families of the ill-fated Aluu 4 incident have been drawn to a widely advertised movie titled “Dark October” which was produced by a known blogger by the name Linda Ikeji as stated therein.

“For the records and sadly so, Linda Ikeji produced the movie without seeking the consent of the affected families and parents of the unforgettable Aluu 4 victims.

“The question to Linda Ikeji is: Can you cry more than the bereaved or do you not have some conscience and humanity in you as a parent that you have become?”

He said Ikeji acted of her own volition without giving attention to meeting the families of the four killed innocent students, adding that Ikeji’s action meant that the victims had no families.

“For the umpteenth time, I have been instructed in writing through my organisation The Integrity Friends for Truth and Peace Initiative TIFPI by the four affected families, that is the parents of late Lloyd Toku-Mike, Chiadika Biringa, Ugonna Obuzor and Tekena Elkanah to represent them and ensure that justice is done in this matter.

“This is to the effect that Linda Ikeji acted both of her own volition and on a frolic of her own as she failed, refused and neglected to seek the consent of the affected and families/parents of these boys whose names and the story of the Aluu 4 incident form the entire essence of the said movie.

“It is important to state that the inexcusable and desperate action of Linda Ikeji on this blood-laced story in what is now christened globally as Aluu 4 or Uniport4 may falsely or arrogantly indicate that these innocent boys do not come from homes and this is not only illegal, it is both inhuman and un-African of one who should know better.”

Wechie emphasized that the movie is the story of a true event, noting that the families ought to be consulted before the production.

He charged the companies involved to stop the planned premiere and make effort to meet the families of the four late students.

“To this end, on behalf of the parents/families of the Aluu 4, we hold that the production and distribution of this movie by Linda Ikeji without the consent and consultation with the affected families/parents is insensitive, mischievous and unacceptable.

“We, therefore, demand that Linda Ikeji and her business partners including Netflix, FilmOne Entertainment Company, etc should by this notice immediately retract and suspend any further actions including the premiering slated for February 3, 2023, and any other date pending and subject to consultations and express consent of the affected families who are at the receiving end of the entire assault.”

It depends on how the narration goes in the movie. Story must be told.
maasoap:

Dumb people everywhere. Story must be told without contacting family members for permission and if given, to obtain credible information for the movie?
Wizard of knowledge. All the movies you watch you think they were all acted with consent? So long as no real name was mentioned, it could as well pass for a fiction.
DonBenny77:

You no get sense sha, and una type plenty for this country na why person like Buhari fit be president.
The population of idiots in this country is too much, my only fear for Peter Obi
Bala baba blu, i hail you. See as your sense dey overflow.
Agbegbaorogboye:

Don't be silly.
Silly master. Fire on!

Grupo:

What do you mean by story must be told.
If the people involved don't want you to tell their story, respect that and back off.
Whatever happens under the sun must be talked about, with or without your consent. The only issue here is that it is being used as a money-making venture, and to such a large audience. Someday if someone writes or acts a story of the most notorious armed robber in Nigeria who uses a Volkswagen car and a Peugeot, then he goes to Mid-western Nigeria to seek consent. All the stories you've heard in this life nobody consulted anybody before you heard them. History is unforgiving. .

If they can stop her and netflix, by all means they should do. But if not, life goes on. I hope the boys were not cultists too. We learn from history every day. No occurrence, no matter how pleasant or awful, pleases 100% of humanity. Even when an armed robber faces firing squad, though it is televised without the consent of his people, his people feel terrible about it and the memory never leaves them. But on the other hand, it entertains and cautions the public.
NB; It will disgust me if they are seeking to be let in on the share of the proceeds from the movie.

So Linda & Co made a movie on this incident without seeking the permission of the traumatised parents of the guys burnt to death? shocked

How about somebody beat and burn to death that Linda's only son, Jason or what's his name and then I go make a movie about it without considering her trauma or/and seeking her permission? undecided

Nigerians will always tag Buhari as evil and the personalization of everything that's wrong with this country. But the vast majority of Nigerians are desperately evil.. For them, money comes 1st, and any other thing or person can go to hell sad

So of all the things Linda & Co had to try to cash out from, it is that horrible incident that the family of those guys are trying as much as possible to forget?..After cashing out from immortalizing the terror these parents are trying to hard to bury, so Linda can comfortably go to sleep while these people are forever reminded by her movie of a a terror best forgotten?

How can Linda, being a mother herself, albeit an unfortunate and useless one, be so callous?

Good, they should not use that tragic event to make money.

None of them said anything about bringing the perpetrators to book since all these years.

This are sad memories to the parents. The incident affects everybody who has a conscience. The parents can sue. Reminding me of the event still got me more angrier. Nothing has changed since the unfortunate incident.
That the person that set those boys up is still a fictional character and yet unaccounted for alone is saddening.

All of us @ stand with the bereaved parents.

obam41363:
If Linda ikeji out of respect for those boys did not seek consent of their parents, then she bleeped up big time....LIKE BIG TIME. What will it cost you to seek their consent and possibly give them 15% of whatever profit the movie grossed. How would she have felt if same was done to her

safarigirl:

You think they will put a movie on Netflix if Netflix does not pay?
She sold the movie, she made it with money so her aim is to make more money, but the least she could have done was consult the families of the slain boys

Obam and Safarigirl,
Both of you have spoken well.
It is always good and refreshing to see we still have reasonable and sensible members like you guys on this forum.
God bless your wisdom sir/ma.

This is how Nigerians are, no iota of professionalism, or proper due process. Anything goes in the Zoo and most think they can just get away with anything.

How inconsiderate, improper and insensitive people can be amazes me.

It could have been a way to honor and tell a story in which lessons can be learnt for generations to come, but as usual the Nigerian I don't care mentality has made this decision by the family necessary
