Are those modular refineries online presently? Because if they are not, just consider them another yahoo-yahoo promise from the Buhari/Tinubu stables.

No wonder Obi is considering issuing those licences to people who are currently refining illegally. At least there's a proof they can refine

Obis proposal remains the best

Try and make a little research, it won't hurt. Government already gave licenses in 2019 for both modular and large scale refineries... despite that, it has not helped in any way. You fail to realise that, a typical Nigerian takes advantage of every situation, rather than create competition that drives prices low, they instead compete for highest seller that drives prices up. See how many cement manufacturer, they still have a way of driving the price up, at the expense of Nigerians. These people are Nigerians, and every Nigerian businessman seeks to steal from the people.

Peter Obi additionally proposed granting licences to modular refineries. That would have been a game changer as
1. They will be operating in naira
2. The fact that there will be a number of them will automatically guarantee competition with the resultant low price of fuel, perhaps even around the N100 per litre level or less

Peter Obi is a dumb liar.

There's no way the price of fuel will come down to ₦100 even if refinery is sited in every local government

Well, considering that 20 other refining licences were issued the question is, why didn't the other refining licences start work?

The cold reason is because subsidy meant that there won't be profits made from selling the petrol refined at any refinery. It is the main reason why we lost all our NNPC refineries...because we were cutting corners to keep costs low....and by extension subsidy costs low.

Dangote was the only one who took a risk. And he got loans from the banks to do so...because the banks know that in case of failure, they would just take over his businesses and pay themselves their money back. Simple.

The cold fact is that keeping petrol at a cost below the production price is why most of the refinery licence owners...except for the one in Edo, the BUA refinery and a few others, did not start work,

Hopefully, things will change with the refinery coming up.

There are above 40 modular refineries in Nigeria. What stops the govt from licencing all, deregulating the price and allow for competition?

Borders were closed to force Nigerians produce locally what they consume, why not implement same for crude?

Reference:

How is he partisan. Is he doing what other labour leaders have not done before.

I am fully for subsidy removals and have been even before principals of this government protested against it years ago but I am also completely for labour's kickback because government must be responsible and held to account.

The battle ground is clear. Trillions of naira will be saved this year and going forward. How this savings will be utilized is what labour and the vast majority of Nigerians knowingly or unknowingly are fighting for.

If it will be put to productive use to reflate the economy, then this country will survive. However if it will be wasted or stolen like we have witnessed this past regime then inflation will bury this country.

So this government had better watch out. It has done the easy part in removing subsidy. What comes next will make it mar it and labour wants to be on top of the situation, to be vigilant, because government simply cannot be trusted with resources.

Left to it's devices no Nigerian government ever does what is right.

And I repeat again without fear of sounding like a broken record.

'Practically the same day Nigerians were called to make a sacrifice of a lifetime government announces that parliamentarians will be receiving a welcome/pension package running into billions of naira', folks widely considered to be overpaid, underworked and certainly not pensionable.

Thus kind of attitude will define this government and will once more make or mar this country.
Nigerian always want leaders to be saints when most of us are small devil's ... Agree the leaders should be saints but let it starts with us, they're so many things wrong with our systems in terms of been accountable, that's why someone would be justing for position in Abuja not necessarily because they want to serve this nation like gallant men , but because they want to suck the motherland breast dry and to what end, to pile up unintelligent wealth in some swiss vault.

This subsidy removal is bad and it end up reducing the life expectancy of poor and middle class nigerians. The nigerian elites with the political elites want to kill off all poorest of the poor nigerians by trying to annul the effect of about 75 trillion naira borrowed by Buhari's administration by removing subsidy. Nigerians better rise and fight off this new govt.

pay rise will lead to inflation. The government needs to provide social support for citizens to reduce the impact. Once salaries are increased prices of goods and services will skyrocket again, so it makes no sense.

Often times I laugh when they say succession cos I know deep down they hate anything that would take them back to their villages because of evil village people and are only hoping to immigrate to south south and take over the oil.

Monopoly does not mean only one supplier exist, it means one supplier dominates the markets.

Also, in the cement market, dangote controls about 60% of the market with the other guys sharing the bit left. That gives him control of price.

So he is right on both counts. You need to refresh your economics

Your kind of thinking is what got us to this mess. The crude belongs to Nigeria as such Nigerians don't have to buy it at international price. The actual cost of extracting crude can't be more than $8 while the cost of refining the crude and profit per liter is $0.023 . In other words a litre of fuel in Nigeria should be N20. The reason cost of petrol is this expensive is because of the exchange rate N460 . At an exchange rate of N127 petrol will be much cheaper. The question is why is our exchange rate so poor and the answer is because we use 70% to import fuel in dollars there by leading to a scarcity of the remaining dollars to meet other importer requirements @N460. This lead to a harmonious price of N745 as a balance between the demand and supply . So N550 is still not a final price of petrol as NNPC is the sole importer because the marketers will have to source the dollar at @N745 which unfortunately is the price dollar is available . At such an exchange rate petrol will be N1100 per liter. Don't forget with each request to import at N745 the Naira keeps loosing value something like this N745, N780, N850, N950, N1000............etc the reason for that is also because Nigeria is import dependent and NNPC is the largest foreign exchange earner. The solution to all this is to fabricate local refinaries and produce the petrol locally while exporting extra refined products to earn additional foreign exchange. If we do this the Naira will appreciate to say N80 to $ . Local fabrication means 90% of the maintenance cost will be in Naira so no need to look for dollar for that.
N3TRAL:

Prices of Petroleum products are governed by OPEC. As a member state of OPEC , for instance, an oil company in Nigeria should not be selling lower than Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia.

The oil prices are fixed by OPEC. They're international. If a barrel of crude oil is 10$, Dangote won't be buying it from Nigeria at $5. He'll be buying it at 10$. When we bring the factors of comparative advantage and the economies of scale, the cost of production in Nigeria should ordinarily be higher.

Dangote's refinery is projected to export its output to African countries and he cannot sell to them below the international prices. The refinery cannot also sell to Nigeria at a lower price because Nigerian smugglers will benefit from such arbitrage system which could see neighboring countries get more supplies than Nigeria as neighboring countries would be getting cheaper fuel from a Nigerian refinery than anywhere else in the world through the backdoor.

If the price from Dangote refinery changes from the price of imported fuel, it would be because of logistic and transportation reasons. Like elimination of the cost of shipping which would mean not more than 30 to 50 naira difference. Dangote's refinery is to improve our balance of payment as a country and prevent a balance of payment deficit but not to make fuel cheaper through another form of subsidy.

The NLC chairman is empty and his opinion is not without prejudice.

1.Qatar produces 1.8 million barrels of crude a day and shares it among 1.2 million people.

2. UAE produces 2.2 million barrels of crude a day and shares it among 15 million people.

3.Saudi produces 10 million barrels of crude a day and shares it among 40 million people.

4.Nigeria...produces 1.8million barrels of crude a day and shares it (the revenue from the oil) among 220 MILLION people.

We produce the same amount of crude as Qatar and have to share it among .......200 times the population.

That's why we are poor. The per capita oil wealth is too low to make us a rich nation....which is why we got to diversify this economy self.
