His disciples didn't fast, because Jesus was with them, empowering them spiritually and covering their spiritual lapses.

But after Jesus left them, they began to fast for more spiritual power.

The same thing applies today. As disciples of Jesus, unless we fast, there are certain miracles or blessings we cannot receive because there are levels in the spiritual realm.
