Education / NEC Meeting: ASUU Embarks on Total, Indefinite and Full Blown Strike by 9jaBlogger: 9:15am On Aug 29, 2022
Baring any last minute change, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will on Monday (today) declare a full blown, total and indefinite strike, CAMPUS GIST reports.

Recall that National Executive Council (NEC) of the striking university lecturers met yesterday to decide on whether to continue the strike which is currently in its sixth month or call it off.

ASUU embarked on strike on February 14, 2022 and has extended it several times due to its inability to reach substantial agreement with the federal government.

CAMPUS GIST had reported how ASUU branches held their congresses nationwide recently, and majority voted for another rollover or an indefinite strike.

A meeting of the National Executive Council of the striking lecturers started in Abuja on Sunday, and lasted into midnight at the ASUU national headquarters at the University of Abuja.

Amid anxiety amongst students and parents, ASUU is expected to brief media this morning on its final decision on whether to continue its industrial action that entered the 196th day on Monday (today).

A member of the NEC, who did not want his name in print because he is not the union’s spokesman, noted that most local congresses voted for strike extension.

“We expect nothing less. Most of the congresses voted for an indefinite strike. The NEC takes decisions based on the reports from branches,” he said.

Another member said, “I can confidently tell you that the majority of ASUU branches across the country voted for an indefinite strike. Over 90% voted for an indefinite strike.”

When contacted on the telephone, ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, told this Online Medium that the Union would address press any moment from now, declining further comments.

Politics / FAKE NEWS: UNIBEN RAPPER, OREKIS, NOT DEAD by 9jaBlogger: 9:47am On Aug 25, 2022
Our attention has been drawn to a viral story making the rounds on social media, which is believed to have originated from a fake news-laden online platform, Nairaland, to the effect that a "popular Uniben rapper, Orekis is dead."

We wish to formally debunk the fake and misleading story and state categorically that the UNIBEN-breed artist is alive, hale and hearty.

It is true that Orekis was recently involved in an accident alongside two other popular UNIBEN stars - AY and Reeze. Sadly, Reeze, unfortunately, couldn't make it. cry

This is not the time to spread unnecessary panic or add to the emotional and physical pains the "accidented" artists are going through, having lost one of their colleagues.

We advise the purveyors of the fake news to desist forthwith from spreading unverified reports capable of causing mental and physical harm to people and their loved ones.

To friends, well-wishers, admirers and fans of the "broken" artists who have since inundated their phone lines with calls, kindly continue to pray for full recovery for them, and repose of soul for our late colleague, Reeze.

Thank you.

•Alumni body donates Recreation Centre to Ekehuan, to revamp Transcript Issuance Process at Ugbowo

By Ogochukwu Isioma

It was a gathering of “who is who” in the society as hundreds of alumni of the prestigious University of Benin (UNIBEN) reunited recently in the United States of America (USA) for the University of Benin Alumni Association, North America (UBAANA) 16th Annual reunion.

The ceremony brought together different sets of former students of the great citadel of learning from far and wide and provided a platform to share old stories, achievements, connections and how they can work together for the benefit of their alma mater.

Some of the dignitaries who graced this year’s reunion were the University’s top echelon including the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Olor’ogun Dr Sonny Kuku; Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami and Bursar, Mr Victor Imagbe.

The reunion also attracted top alumni from far away Nigeria including President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata – who was the keynote speaker; and the Chief Medical Director, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Professor Darlington Obaseki.

Speaking at the auspicious ceremony held in Chicago, United States, President of the UBAANA, Alex Imuetinyan Eronmwon, reeled out some of the achievements of his “dream team” led executive committee since their inauguration on 31st July, 2021.

He said, “We focused our energies on renewing our membership drive…we now have more active members. Additionally, members have been paying their dues within the stipulated timeframe. This is an added advantage for growth and development.”

President Eronmwon revealed that all standing committees have been reconstituted, adding, “new chapters are already in the pipeline. On June 26, 2022, we inaugurated the Northern California chapter. We plan on launching the Massachusetts chapter in a couple of months.”

He said UBAANA has continued to support the University Management, donating projects, including the construction of the UBAANA Recreation Centre at Ekehuan campus of the University, which has now been completed and awaiting commissioning. Eronmwon revealed that a similar but much larger project would be executed at the Ugbowo campus by UBAANA.

“Based on the great need and long-standing challenges with obtaining transcripts from the University, we were able to come up with a plan to revamp the transcript issuance process at the Exams and Records Division and consequently, UBAANA will be supporting them with desktop computers, printers and scanners to expedite retrieval of transcripts”, he added.

On the recent loss of two illustrious former Vice Chancellors of the University, President Eronmwon disclosed that UBAANA engaged in providing support during the passing of Professor Grace Alele-Williams, and will be doing same for Emeritus Professor Osayuki Godwin Oshodin.

Mr Eronmwon reiterated his committment in moving the Association forward, for the good of UNIBEN; while expressing profound gratitude to his team and members of UBAANA for their dedication, sponsors for their magnanimity, and dignitaries for taking time off their busy schedules to grace the reunion.

For the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, it was another golden opportunity to laud the Alumni body for its unwavering support towards her Administration since inception in 2019, and seek for a more cordial relationship and support for her Administration’s success, going forward.

Mounting the podium, in her goodwill message, Professor Salami said she was pleased to be part of the 16th Reunion, being the first physical reunion in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and her first physical attendance since becoming Vice Chancellor.

She lauded UBAANA and her members for always having University of Benin in a good place in their heart and for showing “significant desire” and “committment” toward the growth and development of the University, both individually and collectively.

Professor Salami noted that the UBAANA Annual Reunion has become an international event which UNIBEN Alumni worldwide look forward to attending, adding, “This feat is not unconnected with your ability to live up to the University Moto, ‘Knowledge for Service’, in all areas of your public and private endeavours, which has made you winners. Everybody wants to identify with winners.”

The Vice Chancellor commended UBAANA for her contributions towards her alma mater, noting, “Indeed, your numerous breakthrough and achievements in your profession or vocation and your contributions to the growth and development of the University of Benin are worthy of commendation.”

She listed some of UBAANA and her members’ support towards her Administration to include the donation of 10,000 face masks at the heat of COVID-19, renovation and painting of the common rooms and reading rooms of the Halls of Residence, construction of the UBAANA Recreation Centre, to the donation of computers and audio-visual equipment worth N2.8 million in support of digital education and entrepreneurship laboratory.

Professor Salami said despite the challenges facing Nigerian Universities, management under her leadership has judiciously used the available human and financial resources to carry out various projects and activities in the University since she assumed office in 2019. She went ahead to list some of the projects that have been undertaken during her tenure which ran into 37.

While thanking UBAANA for her past and present contributions to the University of Benin, the Vice Chancellor craved an increased and continued contributions of the Alumni body both individually and collectively as “able and trustworthy partners in progress.”

Professor Salami called on all UNIBEN Alumni worldwide to participate, promote and sustain their individual and collective interests in the activities of the University of Benin in a “mutually beneficial manner”, even as the University continues to live up to her mission statement.

CAMPUS GIST reports that, the University of Benin Alumni Association, North America (UBAANA) 16th Annual Reunion held from Friday 29th to Sunday 31st July, 2022, at the Sheraton Suites, Chicago, United States of America (USA).

Members were treated to a nicely packaged activities lined up to spice up the reunion including Golf outing, Boat ride, Leadership forum, Picnic and Gala night. It is noteworthy to mention that so many UBAANA members from the United States and Nigeria honoured this year’s reunion.

Major highlights of the UBAANA’s 16th Annual Reunion was the presentation of a posthumous award to the first indigenous and late former Vice Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Osayuki Godwin Oshodin, who recently passed away after a brief illness at age 71; and presentation of awards to some alumni by UBAANA’s President, Alex Imuetinyan Eronmwon.

Nigerian youths in diaspora under the aegis of the Nigerian Diaspora Youth Coalition (NDYC) has announced a seven-member Presidential Campaign Council ahead of next year’s general elections.

Recall that the Diaspora organisation had recently announced and endorsed Mr. Peter Obi as its sole Presidential Candidate in the election at a meeting of the group held in Dallas, Texas, United States of America.

In a statement on Monday, the NDYC said the campaign council will direct, coordinate, and mobilize support for Mr. Obi of the Labour Party (LP), its sole Presidential Candidate in the upcoming elections.

“Furthermore, the campaign council will execute and coordinate the existing campaign strategy and shall be at liberty to initiate and implement new strategies geared towards galvanizing support for our chosen candidate,” the statement said.

Edo College of Nursing Science
“The campaign council will closely work with the Board of Directors and shall present monthly updates to the Board on the actions and directions of the campaign,” the NDYC added.

The Campaign Council, which was approved by the NDYC Board of Directors, has Prince Ulame Erese as Chairman of the team, and Dr. Governor Godfrey Ameh as Executive Secretary.

While Mr. Basil Okpara shall act as 1st Vice President, Vanessa Osariemen Ojo-Igbinoba was named 2nd Vice President, and Mr. Kevin ‘Kaka’ Omokaro appointed UK Coordinator.

Other prominent diaspora Nigerians who made it to the seven-member team are Hon. Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor and Dr. Gift Orukpe. Both were named Members of the Campaign Council.

The NDYC, which is the umbrella body of Nigerian youths in diaspora, took the decision of adopting Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) as its sole presidential candidate at the extraordinary special meeting held in Dallas, Texas, USA, in July.

“The Nigerian Diaspora Youths Coalition projects, supports, equips, and prepares youths to take their rightful place in the politics and governance of Nigeria. The organization was established in 2020 as an aftermath of the EndSARS movement in Nigeria to promote and support good governance; in line with that vision, the organization recently adopted the candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, after intense scrutiny of all candidates participating in the forthcoming general elections.

“The organization has promised to massively support and campaign for the Labour party candidate. To this effect, the organization is setting up a campaign council to direct the campaign activities of the organization for Mr. Peter Obi,” the NDYC added.

Education / NANS Official Accused Of Drugging, R@ping FUTA Student by 9jaBlogger: 10:35am On Aug 10, 2022
An official of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest zone, Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, has been accused of druggIng and r@pIng a female student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

Twitter user, Samzy (@SamzyVG), made the allegations in a series of tweets sighted by CAMPUS GIST on his Twitter handle late Tuesday night.

According to him, the victim who earlier got the accused arrested and detained at the police station later settled for “out-of-court settlement” where she demanded for a Ten Million Naira (N10,000,000) compensation for damages.

He said the suspect bargained for a Three Hundred Thousand Naira (N300,000) compensation which he claimed was paid to the victim and the accused was thereafter granted bail and allowed to go home.

CAMPUS GIST gathered that the accused person is an alumnus of FUTA and Public Relations Officer of NANS in Zone D, which covers Southwest; while his alleged victim is a 500-level student of Animal, Production, FUTA.

Samzy said: “R@PE: An Alumnus of the Federal University of Technology Akure identified as Awoyinfa Opeoluwa who is also a NANS Executive has been accused of druggIng, R@pIng and Blackmailing a 500L female student from the department of Animal, Production & Health…

“The Victim who proceeded to arrest the accused & had the Suspect detained at Wesco Police Station, FUTA Northgate Akure. Reportedly the Victim demanded for Compensation of #10,000,000 naira due to Damages out of the Court premises to settle the case.

“Reportedly she was Paid a Sum of #300,000 naira Compensation while the Suspect was granted Bail and allowed to Go home.”

The trending story which was told under the hash tag, #FUTAR@peStory, appears to have been collaborated by other tweeps who seem to know the accused person and familiar with his reported “escapades”.

A Twitter user, Flora Oladipupo commented: “Always in the news for something bad from his days as a futarian and now outside of FUTA. What scares me is one day he’ll apply for a delicate political position and might win cos people outside of FUTA won’t know the menace he was from his student/SUG days.”

Another user, Adetutu, wrote: “Does he not get tired, he probably just enjoys preying on girls, almost everybody has heard about him before now, I just don’t get how he’s still walking freely. Boya won de shepe fun ni”.

For Oluwaseun: “Why would that lady in #Futar@pestory space say the victim is supposed to know about opiano because she’s in 500l?! Hello there’s no sense in that pls. How is she suppose to know everyone in Futa?,” she queried.

Another user, Sole Joseph wrote, “We were in same faculty tho and never heard of this his side of life. But with my few findings now I heard his popular r@pe trend began when he got a car and some of us already graduated before he got his car. He’s got to pay for his sins anyway and others like him. Dem plenty.”

For Ife, “Lol, a friend of mine has given me this gist before, he slips something in their drink and has his way with them and no be only him dey do ham. it’s crazy.”

Meanwhile, a group, Female National, the apex body of female students advocating for the “legitimate interest” of every Nigerian female student, has since indicated interest in the case.

Taking to Twitter, while commenting under the r@pe post, the group wrote, “Thank you for blowing the whistle, please note that the leadership of @FemaleNational both at the national and Ondo state level has taken this up since yesterday.

“But till this morning, the state Chairperson who’s also the former SUG VP of futa couldn’t get in touch with victim.

“We will update you under this tweet as we progress. Thanks.”

Meanwhile, all efforts to speak with the accused person to hear his own side of the story proved abortive. This online medium was yet to establish the veracity of the report as the identity of the alleged victim remain largely unknown as at the time of filing this report.

For the second time in two months, the University of Benin is in mourning again following the passing of the first indigenous, and former Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Osayuki Godwin Oshodin.

Leading the team of Principal Officers to the bereaved family on a condolence visit, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, described the occurrence as shocking.

She eulogised Professor Oshodin as a great mentor, a compassionate father, erudite teacher and astute Administrator whose tenure witnessed a great turn around for the University in terms of infrastructure development and welfare of staff as well as students.

Professor Salami, on behalf of the Uniben community, urged the Oshodin family to be consoled that the loss is a general one affecting the family, the University, and the Benin nation because Professor Oshodin loomed large as a great unifier of his people.

She prayed God to grant his soul eternity. In the meantime, a condolence register is being opened at the Vice Chancellor’s Office while the Uniben flag will again fly at half mast. The same protocol was observed recently following the passing of Professor Grace Alele-Williams, the first female Vice-Chancellor.

The immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on Saturday emerged as the senatorial candidate of the party for Edo North Senatorial District.

Oshimhole was returned unopposed as his rival, the incumbent senator for the district, Francis Alimikhena, had on Friday resigned his membership of the party and stepped down as an aspirant of the party.

In Edo south, the former State Youth Leader of the party, Valentine Asuen defeated former deputy governor, Mr Lucky Imasuen, with 216 to 158 votes while four votes were voided.

In Edo Central, Monday Okpebholo was returned unopposed as he was affirmed by 242 out of the 244 accredited delegates.

Conceding defeat, Imasuen said he entered that race late and accepted the outcome of the result, saying “we need to now work together to ensure that we win the general election.”

On his part, Asuen promised that he would work with all members of the party to ensure victory.

Politics / BREAKING: Deborah’s Main Killer not Nigerian, says Police by 9jaBlogger: 10:56am On May 15, 2022
The Sokoto Police Command has said one of the prime suspects in the murder of Deborah Samuel is a foreign intruder from the neighbouring Niger Republic, Peoples Gazette reports.

The police said the suspect could not be found in the metropolis despite being captured on camera proclaiming his role in the lynching and burning of the 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education.

“We started looking for him immediately we saw his video on social media because he is fundamental to our investigation,” a top police source told Peoples Gazette on Friday evening.

“We are now learning that he is not even a Nigerian but only came in illegally from Niger Republic to cause chaos in our country.”

The official said Interpol might be enlisted to help arrest the suspect, even though many officers still hold that the suspect is a Nigerian and remained within the country’s borders.

“Some officers are saying he is a Nigerian and we need additional time to find him,” our informant said.

“We have no facial recognition database, but we are following all available intelligence on the matter.”

A spokesman for the police in Bauchi said he could not immediately provide additional updates about their handling of the crisis.

Commissioner Kamaldeen Okunola told The Gazette he was in a strategy meeting and was not in a position to comment on the investigation.

The police have already announced that two suspects are being held over the murder, which continues to grip the country for the third day.

On Saturday, violence broke out across the metropolis after thugs stormed the palace of the Sultan to demand the release of suspects from custody. The main Catholic secretariat in Sokoto was attacked during the rampage.

Education / ASUU Strike: Protesting Students Storm Benin Airport by 9jaBlogger: 5:27pm On May 09, 2022
By CAMPUS GIST, Benin City
Monday May 9th, 2022.

Hundreds of students from public institutions in Edo State, on Monday held the Benin Airport by the jugular, as they protested the continued closure of their schools due to the warning strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

Vehicular movement on the busy road was temporarily paralyzed for some hours, as the situation forced commuters to remain at the spot, resulting in long queues of vehicles on the Benin Airport road.

The protesting students urged the Federal Government to resolve the ASUU strike permanently and invest in education, noting that government-owned universities are the only system that serves the children of the masses.

They chanted solidarity songs, stating that they were tired of staying at home doing nothing and want immediate resolution of the crisis between the striking university lecturers and the federal government.

The students, at the Airport gate, also displayed banners with various inscriptions lamenting that the disruption to their academic calendar has affected their plans, while security personnel had a busy day trying to prevent the protesters from gaining entry into the Airport.

CAMPUS GIST reports that, ASUU on Monday announced the extension of its three-month strike by additional three months. The union blamed federal government for the decision, because of failure by the government to address issues in contention.

ASUU’s demands include the non-implementation of the Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed with government in December 2020 on funding for revitalisation of public universities (both federal and states), renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ ASUU Agreement and the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

Other outstanding issues are earned academic allowances; state universities, promotion arrears, withheld salaries, non-remittance of third-party deductions and rejection of UTAS that ASUU technical team developed to replace the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

Education / FLASHBACK: Chrisland School Official Jailed For Rape by 9jaBlogger: 6:21pm On Apr 19, 2022
Chrisland Schools has been lately on the news for a similar wrong reason recorded in the past.

The Lagos State Government has shut down all branches of the school over a rape incident involving its pupils.

A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her schoolmates during vacation in Dubai.

The issue generated heated controversy, with some blaming parents of the children involved for undue exposure.

Three years ago, Adegboyega Adenekan, a supervisor at Chrisland School, Victoria Island, Lagos, was sentenced to 60 years in prison for defiling a 2-year-old child.

Justice Sybil Nwaka of an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court handed down the sentence, convicting Adenekan on a count charge of defilement.

She held that evidence before the court showed that the supervisor was guilty as charged. Adenekan was a supervisor at the Chrisland School, Victoria Garden City, Lagos State.

“This defendant is conscienceless, wicked, an animal, and not fit to walk on the streets. I hereby sentence Adegboyega Adenekan to 60 years’ imprisonment. This is the sentence of the court,” the judge held.

Seven witnesses, including the pupil and her mother, testified for the prosecution, which closed its case on March 14, 2019.

Reacting to the conviction in an interview, mother of the victim said she trusted the school with her most prized possession but Chrisland failed her.

“Chrisland is not just any school. The only reason we took our kids there, leaving behind so many other school was because we had a lot of trust in the school. We believed they could give our kids the best education, we believed they could keep our children safe. It never crossed my mind that her class teachers would carelessly allow someone to take her out of the class to his office to molest her.

“The pre-school 2 class teacher didn’t mention the family friend part until she was speaking with the police. I was extremely surprised. I mean, what kind of relationship existed between my daughter and this man that would warrant her class teacher assume we were family friends? Maybe if she had told me that, that would have created a spark, a reason for me to be worried.

“I trusted her, I trusted the school. I gave you my child to care for, with all due respect, I didn’t expect you to let anyone take her out of the class. I trusted Chrisland so much, that was why my kids attended the school in the first place. We trusted them with our most prized possession. We were living in our own nightmare. We never imagined this could happen to our daughter. We were not careless with watching and protecting our kids at all. In our wildest dreams, we never thought our daughter could be abused in school, the one place we could not follow her to.”

UNIBEN VC Performs Groundbreaking for Construction of Danjuma Hostel

By Ogochukwu Isioma

Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Lilian Salami, on Thursday, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Senator Daisy Danjuma hostel for female students at the Ugbowo Campus of the Institution.

Speaking during the event, a visibly elated Professor Salami thanked the donor, General TY Danjuma for the wonderful gesture and appreciated all who have continued to demonstrate goodwill towards her administration.

She prayed for the grace to complete the project.

The Senator Daisy Danjuma hostel, is a two three-floor hostel for female students, which was graciously donated by General TY Danjuma to complement the Vice Chancellor's massive infrastructure drive, and the project is expected to be completed in less than ten months.

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, only recently completed three new hostels for the University. This was followed closely by the award of a fully-furnished two hostels - male and female - as well as office complex at the University by the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).
