Astronomers seek evidence of tech built by aliens An international team of scientists led by a prominent Harvard astronomer announced a new initiative Monday to look for evidence of technology built by extraterrestrial civilizations. Called the Galileo Project, it envisages the creation of a global network of medium-sized telescopes, cameras and computers to investigate unidentified flying objects, and has so far been funded with $1.75 million from private donors. Given recent research showing the prevalence of Earth-like planets throughout the galaxy, "We can no longer ignore the possibility that technological civilizations predated us," Professor Avi Loeb told reporters at a news conference. "The impact of any discovery of extraterrestrial technology on science, our technology, and on our entire world view, would be enormous," he added in a statement. The project includes researchers from Harvard, Princeton, Cambridge, Caltech and the University of Stockholm. It was announced a month after the Pentagon released a report about unidentified aerial phenomena, which stated that their nature was unclear. "What we see in our sky is not something that politicians or military personnel should interpret, because they were not trained as scientists, it's for the science community to figure out," said Loeb, adding that he hoped to increase the project's funding tenfold. The Galileo Project was announced a month after the Pentagon released a report about unidentified aerial phenomena, which stated that their nature was unclear. Given recent research showing the prevalence of Earth-like planets throughout the galaxy, "We can no longer ignore the possibility that technological civilizations predated us," Professor Avi Loeb told reporters at a news conference. Thanks once It was announced a month after the Pentagon released a report about unidentified aerial phenomena, which stated that their nature was unclear. Avi Loeb stoked controversy when he suggested an interstellar object that briefly visited our system in 2017 could have been an alien probe sailing on solar winds. Apart from studying UFOs, the Galileo Project wants to investigate objects that visit our solar system from interstellar space, and searching for alien satellites that might be probing Earth. Loeb refers to such research as a new branch of astronomy he calls "space archaeology," intended to complement the existing field of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), which mainly probes for alien radio signals. These endeavors will require collaborations with existing and future astronomical surveys, including from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile that is due to go online in 2023 and is eagerly awaited by the scientific community. The 59-year-old Israeli-American has published hundreds of pioneering papers and collaborated with the late Stephen Hawking, but created controversy when he suggested an interstellar object that briefly visited our system in 2017 could have been an alien probe sailing on solar winds. He laid out his arguments in scientific papers and the book "Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth," which placed him at odds with many in the astronomy community. The new project is accordingly named after Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei, who was punished when he provided key evidence for the Earth not being at the center of the universe. The project's co-founder Frank Laukien, a visiting scholar at Harvard's chemistry and chemical biology department, declared himself the "resident skeptic." But he said that, rather than dismissing the ideas outright, it was necessary to "agnostically record and interpret the data according to the scientific method." https://phys.org/news/2021-07-astronomers-evidence-tech-built-aliens.html Cc. Trevor012:Lols, it's better you read good books on the history of natural philosophy and science before commenting on a subject you know nothing about. |
Trevor012:This post shows you know little about the history of science. How could you say science and faith go well together when religious people, especially Christians and Muslims, killed thousands of early scientists and philosophers in different parts of Europe and Africa (especially Egypt)? In the past, religious people saw scientists as possessed people, witches and wizards. (Sadly, Africa is still in this dark age.) Then in Europe, every invention, not mentioned in the Bible and Qur'an, was seen as devilish. The world would still be in complete darkness today if not for the ingenuity and courage of these philosophers, freethinkers, atheists that opposed dogmas and superstitious beliefs in religion. Science and religion are opposites, and organized religion is a great obstacle to the development of science. |

donjazet:I suppose you mean the difference between athiesm and agnosticism. The former has to do with the rejection of belief in any god or deity, while the latter posits that God or Ultimate Reality is unknowable. IMO, atheists, humanists, agnostics are all freethinkers. |
Amoto94:Interesting discussion. But I'm not an atheist. I'm an agnostic or freethinker. |
The University of Ibadan (UI), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) have emerged as the best varsities in Nigeria based on the quality of scientists. AD Scientific Index, a leading global ranking body based in Turkey, recently released the list of its 2021 world scientist and university rankings. According to the list, UI ranked 19 in Africa and 1,350 in the world while UNN occupied the 25th spot in the continent and 1,522 globally. UNILORIN was also ranked 41 in Africa and 1,941 in the world. The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) came fourth while the University of Calabar (UNICAL) was named the fifth-best varsity in Nigeria on the ranking. AD Scientific Index said the ranking “reveals the competency of institutions to attract prized scientists and the ability of institutions to encourage advances and retain scientists.” Harvard University made the top spot on the list globally while the University of Cape Town was ranked the best institution in Africa. Amoto94:All these verses don't prove anything. Qur'an claims Adam was the first man on Earth; without scientific (archaeological) evidence, it's a mere claim. |
Amoto94:You didn't mention any benefit exclusive to Muslims. Adherents of other religions also believe these things. Amoto94:Can you quote the verse in the Qur'an where a religion called Islam existed before Muhammad was born? You know the Qur'an stated specifically how and when the religion was named "Islam". Apart from the Qur'an, you don't have a concrete scientific proof that humanity started in Asia (Saudi), even though the available body of archaeological evidence says otherwise. Amoto94:How is striving to practise Islam the way its founder Muhammad did, going "overboard"? Don't blame the extremists for following the footsteps of Mohammed. Amoto94:I understand you perfectly, which is why I'm surprised you condemn religious extremists, and you still believe "family ties means nothing if you don't share the same faith with a family member." No need to condemn what you practise. That's self-contradictory. |
Amoto94:I know that's what you would say as a Muslim. But I thought you would tell me the benefits of choosing Allah out of the thousands of gods in history. Do Muslims enjoy any advantage exclusive to them that others such as pagans, atheists, Christians don't enjoy? Islam was established only 1400 years ago by Mohammed. Do you know humanity (homo sapiens) has been existing for close to 300,000 years and that before the advent of Islam and Christianity, humans were pagans? I suppose you know all this. I see you as an educated and smart person, so I expect you already know that Muslims don't enjoy anything special that other religious or irreligious people don't enjoy as well. If you want to talk about reward in heaven, other religious people and even some irreligious people also look forward to enjoying a good afterlife. Besides, there's no concrete scientific proof that heaven exists as most people picture it. I have argued and interacted with a number of Muslims, and the sincere, rational ones among them admit the various issues with Islam, Qur'an, and Sharia. Some even admit they're only bearing the tag 'Muslim' for the sake of socialization and identification. The truthful ones can see the dangers of religious extremism/fanaticism in society, in a family. Even though there's a verse in the Qur'an that says there's no compulsion in religion, most Muslims (following the Sunnah of the Prophet) force, coerce others to practice Islam. A typical Muslim will deny their child basic human rights, maltreat them, and even disown them if they tell such a parent they want to leave Islam. Do you think a society that doesn't allow religious freedom can grow? How will a people grow when they keep on killing their thinkers (freethinkers, atheists, philosophers, potential scientists)? Can such a country become great when they demonize the irreligious as "possessed people", meant to be killed or locked in prison? It's sad Nigeria is still in dark age, where religious dogma and superstition stifles critical thinking. Amoto94:This doesn't change the fact that life is both deterministic and probabilistic. "Probability", as used in that context, is a mathematical/scientific term, different from "possibility". |
Amoto94:In the post above, if one replaces Allah with Odin, Olohun or any of the thousands worshipped in history, one will still achieve greatness in life if one is destined to do so. It all boils down to taking steps to achieve one's goals and luck. The harder one works, the luckier one becomes. Prayers are mere wishes. In my opinion, life is mostly deterministic and sometimes probabilistic. |
Amoto94:About the message in the picture: The same thing also applies to the foreign (imported) ones, be it Allah or Jehovah. Relying on any god/God is a waste of time. What works is science and philosophy (taking responsibility for one's life). |
erusen:Why do you think so? |
swiz123:Interesting. Personally, I have witnessed a similar scenario a few times that seems mysterious. I think a number of such demonstrations (by magicians and the likes) are performed using tricks. However, some others (of such shows) demonstrate certain properties of nature that scientists are yet to fully comprehend. When a magician does something that seems to defy the laws of physics (like chewing blade without getting hurt, for instance), I think they're applying the notion/principle that all heads (brains) in the universe are connected as a single matrix, according to Otematum. They have mastered this principle and, thus, know how to make their audience see whatever picture (things) they've imagined in their mind. One can understand this, at least theoretically, by applying some principles of quantum physics to the brain. If the brain is seen as a matter wave (a system of photons), it can experience entanglement the same way a typical quantum mechanical system does --albeit on a much lower scale. A definition of quantum entanglement: If you observe a particle in one place, another particle—even one light-years away—will instantly change its properties, as if the two are connected by a mysterious communication channel. Entanglement on such a relatively enormous scale (as applicable to the brain) has not been demonstrated yet by scientists. If you're familiar with optics in physics, you would know that what we see as reality isn't what really exists. When you look at any object, your brain forms a picture of the object based on a number of factors, including the amount of light entering the eyes, your mental state. Even your religious beliefs and cultural beliefs also shape what you see as reality. Due to the limitations of our senses, we can't see a sizeable part of reality (much of reality is filtered by the eyes). Even there are some parts of the electromagnetic spectrum (light in layman's terms) we can't see. Also, we can't hear or detect some waves within certain frequency range. Thus, we can't get a full picture of reality, but the (limited) interpretation our brain produces. The magician knows this: That what we see as reality is just an illusion, not what really exists. I think some of these magicians and priests of African traditional religion know a number of secrets about reality that the average person doesn't know. (Perhaps they learnt them from their ancestors they've deified as a god or goddess.) They (the genuine ones among them) don't see reality like the average person does. This quote from Nikola Tesla sums up this point: “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” |
