When Krause brought Phil in from the CBA I think, he was hired as an assistant and he spent more time with Tex Winter who is the originator of the triangle offense. Phil bought the idea after several months of understudying and learning the specifics with Tex. When Doug was fired and Phil hired, Phil introduced the Triangle to MJ and the team. MJ alluded that it was tough but he knew it was best for the team if the ball moved around. That was how Pippen blew up as he had more touches and with MJ supporting him, he felt more comfortable.
They were making progress but could not get over the hump with Doug because the Pistons knew they had to roughen up the Bulls and make sure Michael is all they worried about. All of that changed with Phil. Phil made the Pistons worry about more than just MJ, also, Phil convinced MJ to bulk up and man did he become immovable after he bulked up.
I think I would have agreed entirely if the Bulls were not winning while Scottie Pippen was in his prime. Then we can solely say the Triangle and Phil Jackson was the sole reason for the Bulls to become dominant.
Remember Pippen was drafted 87 season. 87/88 was his rookie year, 88/89 they made conference finals while Pippen was still an average Joe. And lost to the Pistons who were far and away the best in the league. In fact they were the only team that avoided a sweep

Roland17: Don't forget, transitioning from Doug Collins to Phil was not easy for MJ. Under Doug, Michael had the ball most times. The ball always found a way to Michael and that was Doug's strategy but Phil came in with the triangle which basically moved the ball around, meaning MJ was having fewer touches and his PPG dropped but he understood it was the best for the team and bought in.
I think it was part Phil and part Doug. I don't believe Phil would have done anything were he Bulls coach between 84 and 88. They were a terrible squad.
