Hey there! When was the last time you took notice of your immediate environment?

True notice, that is. What did you see or observe? Problems? Yes, there is never a shortage of problems in the world.

However, some people have been able to provide solutions to these problems and are making their living from these solutions.

In Africa, we have problems with employment. Whether employed or not, there are problems you can provide solutions to.

If the problem you are targeting is too big to handle, break it down and tackle one part of it. Look for collaborators and partners to join you.

Start from your immediate environment to seek out problems and offer solutions. Be consistent and loud (silence or whispers are no longer sustainable) and soon, your brand will kick off.

Not just hard copy books. It could be articles, newsletters, or eBooks. These can easily be shared to your social media platforms, and mailing lists.

The more people read from you, the more you would read and gather knowledge, so as not to disappoint your audience.

Some experts have said that if you want to become more knowledgeable in an area, you should write more.

Writing will help you articulate your thoughts for proper communication. It will also give you an audience, especially on social media.

This week on the Lingo Africa website, we featured a slightly long-form article talking about how to be a truly skilled worker. There are many different ways to be a skilled worker. One way is continuous learning, especially the kind that is done without the aid of any institution and is self-styled.

We all have our best ways of learning, some through experiences, others through focused groups, and the like. Regardless of your style of learning, you should ensure that you are learning something new at least every month. When was the last time you learned something new? Not just by taking online courses (that you may end up not using).

You can learn new stuff through workshop/seminar attendance, online networking groups, or just a stimulating conversation with peers. It's a new work week. Try to learn something new!

This is very necessary in the world we live in today. For every industry, there are thousands/millions of practitioners.

In order to stand out, you have to keep reinventing yourself.

How do you successfully reinvent yourself, so that everyone who sees your work will appreciate you for being different?

Let's look at the singer, Madonna, who has been an active entertainer since the 80's, but she's still relevant today.

Why? She is never stuck in any decade. There's a different Madonna for the 80's, 90's, early 2000's and even now. She understands what people want and she assumes the preferred personality.

Look at Funmi Iyanda of the defunct New Dawn on NTA. She captured her audience with her calm style of one-on-one interviews. This made her stand out at the time.

Then, look at Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and his style of delivery during the Big Brother Nigeria show, his interview style on Rubbin Minds on Channels TV, as well as his fashion sense - all these and more have built a solid broadcasting persona for him.

Yes, there are many people practising the same career as you, but what makes you stand out?

A lot of people make the mistake of not making career plans targeting years into the future.

They believe in the old ways of thinking - that all they need is to acquire a certain degree(s) and land a job in a specific industry and work for years, retire on a pension and that's it.

This is no longer sustainable. In this era, some industries are going extinct, new industries are coming to life.

As you make your career plans, ensure you educated yourself on global trends. Follow industry/career experts on social media, to understand what will be relevant in the next 20 to 40 years, so, you can make great plans according to what the world is looking for.

After all, why would you want to engage in work that nobody cares about?

Some important pages to follow for global career trends, include; Harvard Business Review, World Economic Forum, Forbes, Entrepreneur...

Imagine working at a great office, and you have two supervisors - one believes in you and the other merely tolerates you and it's very obvious.

What would you do in this situation? Quit and get a new job, or keep working diligently to prove yourself to your dismissive supervisor?
