The African continent with all it's human and natural resources is still backwards, despite advancement of the times.

This is 2020, and the continent's population consists mostly of people between the ages of 18 and 35.

But, nothing really favors them. Educational standards are still not up to par, unemployment figures are rising daily and sit-tight leaders are making things more difficult for young people.

Surviving Africa as a young person, now depends on three things;

1. Take advantage of scholarship offers in sane countries. Travel, study and excel, so, you can build your career outside Africa.

2. As a fresh graduate, look out for graduate internships at organizations like KPMG, Oil & Gas companies, Banks and Multinational FMCGs. When you find their vacancy adverts, apply and study hard for the examinations, so you can be selected for a job, where you can start getting promoted. Age limit for graduate internships is usually 27.

3. Use your social media (especially LinkedIn & Twitter) wisely. Carry out advocacy campaigns in your field of expertise. Soon, you'll become a thought leader, and, this way, you're likely to land collaborative opportunities with established brands who have an interest in that field.

I know this topic has been discussed several times on a plethora of platforms, but, I think it's important for us to keep reminding ourselves of why it's a relevant topic.

When sending in job applications, it is best to use a resume, which is a direct answer to the advertised job.

A resume contains your contact details, education details and work experience as it relates to the role you are applying for.

HR managers will only look through your application for about 6 minutes. A resume is better suited for this purpose.

If you're applying as a project manager, it's better to send a resume showing your previous experience handling projects.

Instead of sending a CV, showing work experience that is unrelated to project management.

Your CV is a more comprehensive document, showing everything you have ever done, including, conferences attended, awards/recognition received, affiliations, etc.

Your CV is appropriate for scholarship, fellowship applications as well as consideration for honorary positions.

Active job seekers sometimes complain about companies/organizations that ask for years of work experience before hiring even for entry level jobs.

The truth is many of these companies value experience a lot and will never go for people without it. They do this to cut training costs, especially when they're yet to break even in the market.

Whether you are still in school or already a jobseeker, you can beat this system by volunteering in your chosen field during your job search, school holidays, or school strike action.

Non-profit organizations usually hire those who have volunteered with them in the past. Some financial institutions also do the same.

Be consistent and ensure you document all your responsibilities and achievements. When you are ready for the job market, you will have some level of experience.

There are countless opportunities for career growth out there. Aside from pursuing further studies, many organizations sponsor fellowships, trainings, and workshops, especially for those from third world countries.

Sometimes, the best way to become a beneficiary of any of these opportunities, you will need to network with more people.

Attend events, reach out to people on LinkedIn, talk about the importance of your work. You should also document everything.

No matter what you achieve in the course of your career, note it down. You will need the information when you meet new people on your networking drive.

What you say, will give way to opportunities in that regard. You should also be intentional when attending events online or offline. Don't attend events just for the sake of it. You must have goals in mind.
