After getting a first degree, a lot of people believe that applying for further studies in the same discipline and sometimes, the same institution, is the best way to go.

However, the fourth industrial revolution has proved this to be wrong. This is especially true if one got a first degree in a country where the curriculum hasn't been updated for years.

The best thing to do in this age of the fourth industrial revolution, is to work for some time after a first degree, and watch out for upcoming industries and sectors.

Then, pick an industry that will stay relevant for years to come and seek further education in that industry. This will help you stay relevant in your career.

The bitter truth is a lot of industries are dying and are being replaced by new ones. Always look out for global career trends and adjust accordingly.

Why is this important?

We live in a time when skills will get you where qualifications will not take you, especially if you got qualifications from countries that are still making use of educational curriculum from 1976!

Yes, qualifications matter, but skills will show employers that you stand out from the rest.

The reason why professionals may change careers are varied. Some of them include;

Earnings - If for instance, a clerk wants to earn better than s/he currently does, an upgrade in new skills is the best bet. A new career in an in-demand industry will certainly make the person earn better.

Interest - As one grows in a certain career, they may begin to develop interest in another field. As this interest grows, they may decide to learn more about the field and look for a job in that new area.

Coincidence - Sometimes, a professional who has worked in a general interest field like Media/Communications, or Law, may find themselves thrust into a field through a job and due to the success they have recorded, could decide to switch full time and become fully involved in the field.

If you find yourself transitioning to another field, it is important to seek out mentors in that field, so, you can learn more and gain access to work opportunities.

Due to the Covid19 pandemic, webinars are kind of the rave right now. Organizations and even individuals are putting webinars together for the benefit of professionals around the world.

As much as it is great to attend webinars to increase your knowledge, you should take into consideration, the fact that not every webinar will be for you.

Before committing to attend a webinar, ask yourself;

Is the webinar theme related to my area of expertise or an industry I intend to transition to?

Does the webinar theme include any lessons that can help me resolve some unanswered questions I have about my field of interest?

Don't attend a webinar just for the sake of it. Always have something valuable you would get from attending and apply it to sustaining your amazing career.

Gone are the days when you list out the job responsibilities you had for each role you have occupied.

The receiving organization already knows the job responsibilities. You should only focus on achievements recorded.

It is important to talk about your achievements because it helps the receiving organization, see the value you bring to the table.

In the past, I have focused mainly on personal branding using social media platforms.

Although it is true that posting on social media can strengthen one's personal brand, it is not the only tool for self promotion.

Do you find yourself in groups of any kind, whether online or offline?

How many of the people in those groups are aware of your skills/expertise?

If they're still unaware, please, understand that you are not promoting yourself properly as long as those groups are concerned.

How about the events (webinars, seminars, conferences) you attend?

Whenever there is a chance to contribute to discussions, do you hide or refrain from making your voice heard? If you are fond of doing that, please, fix up!

The truth is that personal branding should not only be done through social media posts.

If you are knowledgeable about stuff, and you get a chance to show that you do, take that opportunity and attract more attention to yourself.

When you do that, you gain more confidence, and you allow others give you more opportunities to excel.
