Adaptability is one of the major skills highlighted as a much needed requirement for the future of the workplace. Embracing uncertainty will make any professional invincible, so to speak. If you find yourself always rooting for the usual and little change, this is the time to brace up and welcome the unfamiliar waters of uncertainty. This is because, we live in a time when nothing is certain. Take the COVID-19 pandemic for instance, it all started off like a bad joke. A lot of people thought it would be contained in China, however, the pandemic spread quickly across countries on different continents and real people lost their sources of livelihood, real families were affected, real futures became jeopardized as a result of the quick spread of a virus that scientists initially knew very little about. It is for reasons like this that every professional has to be on their toes and stay teachable and willing to adapt to new methods and ways of life, so they do not get sucked into or get totally consumed by any uncertainty. Deyemi is an Engineer. He is one of our clients from Nigeria and the pandemic has hit him hard. He lost his job recently and given the fact that he is prepared for any uncertainty, he was able to look around his immediate environment and figure out what he could do for money during the lockdown, so as to provide for his family. At the end of the day, Deyemi was able to sell his skills as a home tutor to the children of his fellow estate occupants. He came up with creative ideas to help children stay busy as schools were closed as well as helping them improve their memory capacity, and after a month, his clientele grew and he started making good money from his tutoring. This is a clear example of someone not falling victim to uncertainty. As a professional, this is a skill that will help you avoid becoming a victim of life’s challenges. As you are growing every day in your career, try to learn adaptability skills by being more open-minded, let go of a strict outlook on life and how it is supposed to go, and be open to learning a lot from those around you. According to Harvard Business Review, Failure fosters humility, which is not only necessary for leadership but self-improvement. Failure does not mean you are defeated. Intellectual humility means recognizing that we don’t know everything. It allows us to acknowledge our limitations, seek answers and accept new ideas. Being defeated during one’s career journey is quite the common occurrence. It happens to everyone at some point. Experiencing setback is unavoidable. However, you can use the setback to re-strategize on how to make things better for your career. When you get to a certain level in your career and you feel you are defeated because of an incident, the more common sentiment is to give up. But, the question here is, are you really defeated when you lose something? Whether it is an opportunity, a valuable connection in your network, an important document, etc, losing is normal and should be expected. A few professionals would advise you to roll with the punches and come up stronger than before. Yes, this is easier said than done, but, at the end of the day, it is the only reasonable thing to do, if you do not want to get sucked into depression and the pity party lifestyle. Losing is a part of life especially in career journeys. What if you lose your job? What if you go broke after losing your job? What if you land a great job and you mess up your first task? What if you do not achieve all the goals you set out for yourself in 2020? All these questions are important because a lot of times, they happen to us and people around us. If any or all these things happen, does it really mean that you are defeated? Absolutely not! Losses will happen, you will not achieve everything you set out to do for yourself. It is very important to understand this and have the right attitude whenever failures happen. You can only learn from what happened and move on with your life, while applying the lessons you learned in the process. francisgodstime:A generic cover letter means a cover letter that is found on most cover letter template websites. It is common and popular. Same words, same style and outlook. It is always better to write your own from scratch, using the job requirements of the role you are applying for. |
