Raft foundation transfer loads to the soil below through the help of the slab. Hence the slabs are designed as an inverted floor slab ( that is, instead of the load acting downward, the soil pressure will exert an upward force on the raft-slab This particular raft-slab is 200mm thick, reinforced with the span reinforcement on top @ 200mm centre to centre with 12mm and the support reinforcement placed at the bottom, in areas where the beams are located, reinforced with 12mm @ 250mm centre to centre
|
These are the questions that lots of people do ask about the Raft foundation. What is a raft foundation? How does the raft foundation transfer the building loads to the soil below? What are the components of a raft foundation? How do we size these raft foundation components? Why do we even use raft for foundation work instead of the strip, reinforced strip, pad and even pile footings? These and more will be answered as practical as possible as you follow us on the journey to deliver this beautiful building. |
Akosmusdecor:The building is one of our ongoing construction @ Surulere Lagos |
Kingbeewillsee:A kilometer of the road of two-lane each of 3.75m with a shoulder of 2.5m costs an average of 200m/km($0.4m/km), excluding bridges. When you compare this to the USA's average of $1.87m/km, you will accept that is far cheaper to build roads in this climes. Note: there are so many variables responsible for the cost of roads; things as topography, soil condition, the hydrological condition of the area, and location such is rural and urban etc. |
Badgers14:Nigeria currently produces 1.6m barrels/day of crude for a population of 200m people; this will amount to 0.008barrel/capita per day compared to UAE which produces 3.5m barrels/day for a population of 9.5m people; this will amount to 0.368barrel/capita per day compared to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which produces 12.5m barrels/day for a population of 36m people; this will amount to 0.346barrel/capita per day In summary, the UAE is 46times richer per capita than us and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is 43times richer than us. It will be unwise to compare these two countries to Nigeria. Also, Oil is Nigeria's export accounting for over 90% of our foreign exchange earnings while UAE and KSA export substantial gas, tourism and other products. |
PresidObi:Abuja has been the capital of Nigeria for 31 years, Is Abuja looking like Dubai today? Tinubu can lay claim to being the brain behind the establishment of the Lekki Free Trade Zone, a zone that currently housed the largest refinery, fertilizers, deep seaport and so many other factories in Africa. Tinubu can be said to be the brain behind the Eko Atlantic city real estate masterpiece. Tinubu was paramount to the improvement of the internally generated revenue in Lagos that allows the state to be able to modernise and finance other laudable projects. He can also be said to be responsible for developing a template called the master plan of Lagos, a political structure that provides a platform for technocrats to do their thing in making Lagos on of the most developed metropolis in Africa. |
Badgers14:Nigeria is a relatively poor country. It has a huge population but very small revenue and budget to meet up with the responsibility of providing infrastructure at record time to its people. You will agree with me that Hongkong and Macau are one of the richest and most developed parts of China, as such I'll never compare the ability of these two semi-autonomous regions of China to build infrastructure with ours. You can't argue that the Nigerian government has not taken the job seriously because there are no comparable projects in the other parts of Nigeria. No project of that magnitude has been undertaken by the ministry of works and housing in the other 5 regions of Nigeria. |
PresidObi:In all seriousness, I love the zeal and the tenacity of our Igbo brothers. This is how you play politics. You congregate around an individual push him and possibly forced him down people's throats using propaganda and other lawful means possible. The truth still remains that Peter Obi is not the best person to lead the country in the year 2023. judging by track records and achievement alone, Tinubu is a better fit. Tinubu understands the economy better, he has instituted more reforms than every political office holder in Nigeria. He'll hit the ground runnings, he has eyes for performers and technocrats alike. These are the qualities needed to lead a country. All you need is a man with the political will, the understanding of the private sector, a man open to reforms and taking difficult decisions, a man open to institutional reforms and who can assemble the right team to initiate such reforms. It's a no-brainer that Tinubu was able to transfer Lagos and also laid down a framework and political structure that actualize this. Tinubu is the right person to lead this country at this time. |
bishopkay:Let us agree to disagree. So, please tell me the ways you develop your people? I would hear things like compulsory primary and secondary school education. Which is largely the primary responsibility of the state and local government I would hear the provision of social infrastructure like pipe born water supply to homes which is the responsibility of the state and local government I would hear the provision of enabling environment for investment and industries which is the responsibility of the federal government but the discussion here relates to the construction of an important bridge which is the purview of the Ministry of Work and Housing. Don't you think bringing this up here amount to a diversion since what you said has nothing to do with Fashola's point of view? |
Great2017:Okay. Noted and thanks |
Great2017:Monster of work and housing! I know and I used it interchangeably with infrastructure. The point still stood. |
PresidObi:You are right! But Fashola's job is limited to the provision of infrastructure, in particular, road infrastructure. He is not saddled with the responsibility of providing security and the management of the fiscal policies of the country. Hence, the provision of easy loans, stable interest rates, and strong security should be directed at the appropriate people responsible for them. Furthermore, road infrastructure is an important ingredient of production. It enables the movement of goods, services, and raw materials from rural areas to the center of production. Finally, The second Niger bridge is a crucial infrastructure, an asset that the southeast has been craving for decades. The question is why is it been greeted with a lot of cynicism by people from the region? Is it because it is been built by the wrong party and the Afonja they hate so much? |
Valkrie:Fashola has proven to be a better administrator than Peter Obi. Leadership is not about throwing numbers around, especially when those numbers have no bearing on the subject matter. I've taken my time to look at Peter Obi's achievement as the governor of Anambra. Watched and read some of his interviews. I've not noticed anything impressive about the man. He throws around numbers when not needed. He gave examples from other climes when he had 8 years to lead a state. If he was so impressive, he would have used Anambra as the template of growth he wants to institute in Nigeria. He would have told us how he transforms Anambra in his time as the governor of the state. |
logicalhumour:It's not the obligation of the government to " work on producing your steel". Gov't is responsible for formulating business-friendly policies, building infrastructure, providing incentives to private entities, and providing education to the teeming population to get them ready for the job market. Also, Fashola is talking in his capacity as the minister of Infrastructure and Housing. His primary mandate is to deliver infrastructure to Nigerians, infrastructure that will make life more meaningful to Nigerians, and make the country a competitive destination for industries and investment. He is not the minister of steel and mining. Finally, many of you throw logic out of the room whenever anyone criticizes Pete Obi. No one is stopping you from supporting the man but never assume that he will not be criticized, even if his suggestions are novel. |
mufutau55:Thank you sir and thanks for all the good recommendation sir. |
Before I forget, the filling and compaction took us almost three weeks. Simply because we have to compact in layers of 150mm to achieve adequate compaction. The question is why is compaction so important for this type of foundation ( raft slab built on fill)? It's important because the fill will receive and carry the weight of the whole structure. Though, the beam will help to prevent shearing at column points. I think, this is the common mistake or misconception with this type of foundation. It's wrongly believe that as long as the raft beam is well done and reinforced, that the slab can be reinforced with wire mesh or lightly. This is wrong. Slab in a raft construction are design like that of solid or flat slab and the reinforcement is opposite to that of the suspended slab (i.e, span reinforcement ontop and support reinforcement at the bottom)
|
The building is on a site of a demolished building. We have to excavate to 500mm, blind for 100mm before setting up a beam of 1200mm. Why do we need to excavate? Excavation is required to prevent the building from overturning due to wind uplift. Since the building needs to be anchored into the ground . For this project, we'll be using 3Y16 top and bottom and 4Y12 both side of the beam. The 4y12 is provided on both side to prevent cracking in other to meet up with the rules of detailing in accordance to BS codes.

Simbrixton:Thanks boss |
after a detailed soil analysis was carried out, the geotechnical engineer recommended a raft foundation for the building. The raft was 1.2m deep with a raft slab of 250mm deep.

Project #1. four units of one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms and two units of three-bedroom flats on a single two suspended floors building. client: contractors/consultant: weBuild (abdulwastecx) Location: surulere type of foundation: raft |
here are some of our ongoing construction work at different locations within Nigeria |
EgunMogaji2:Baba, you have done an excellent job here. I love the attention to details, empowering of the local artisans with acquisition of tools that will make their job better and the general eco-friendly nature od the build. I salute! For doors, I love the idea of a composite between wood and MDF board. You can get a nice timber (like Omo, Afara or Malaina) to do a 5" wide frame and then embed the MDF board that blend with the wood colour in between. Here you get structural integrity with the wood frame and then get aesthetics with the MDF. |
EgunMogaji2:Thank you sir |
DUNKA:Thanks boss |
EgunMogaji2:We'll make it happen sir |
EgunMogaji2:Baba Egun, for the door, I'll advice you to get a draft man, pay him to get you a detail design of the wooden door you need. I mean working drawings. Take these drawings to a good carpenters around Ibadan, let him promise to interpret the design properly. Buy the materials and let him fabricate the door for you. You can do thesame for both your kitchen cabinets and others. |
KolaShangOne:Bro, there is no way we can blame the clients because no one is forcing people to under quotes work just to end up messing up. |
seankim:It's easy to paint unrealistic pictures and defraud people of their hard earn money. Building construction is not magic and no amount of thinking out of the box can make you execute a 40m project for 30m (a tleast at carcass level). What you get is a guy without the most rudiments idea of how structural engineering works under valuing jobs that he knows will not work but still went ahead to do because he has the intention to defraud and run away with peoples money at the end of the day. Contractor do have issues with client but such issues should not be as a result of incompetence or fraud and must be resulted mutually without being taking to the public. Because anyone using the social media space to solicit for work should never allow bad publicity that will sow seed of doubt in their mind. |
