pro01: How important is numeracy in acquiring project management training? Is it necessary to have maths skills to successfully learn and implement project management?

Not necessarily anyone can learn project management regardless of their numeracy skills.

Travel / The 5 Most Expensive Places To Live In Abuja by Abujafood: 6:44pm On Sep 25, 2013
Abuja is rated the 4th most expensive city in Africa due to its high cost of living. A number of factors are responsible for this such as difficulty in accessing available land due to land grabbing by the elite, a very strict master plan, plus lots of money in circulation chasing very few goods as Abuja is still largely a Government run city. Here we present Abuja’s 5 most expensive districts based on living costs including rent and basic consumables.

Asokoro District

If you want to live in Asokoro because of its exclusivity and high brow status that’s a good thing to aspire to but be warned as you’ll discover that unless you’re a filthy rich money bag you can’t even rent an apartment not to talk of owning a house. Rents start from N4 million for 2 bedroom flats and that’s not also talking about the few expensive shops around where you may spend some people’s annual salaries on a single spree.

Maitama District

Most people who live in Maitama are diplomats, ministers, government big shots, former or serving governors and their families, senators or big time contractors but not regular civil servants or ordinary Nigerians like you and I. If you can cough out N2.5 million for a 2 bedroom flat for 12 months or spend close to N100,000 for regular groceries for a family of 4 at any of the expensive supermarkets (212 or Classic) then it’s no big deal to reside in this part of Abuja.

Wuse 2

Has most of Abuja’s upscale restaurants and hospitality centers. It’s where you’ll find the Exclusive stores, Juice Place 2, Quarter Café, Woks and Koi, The Nail Bar or Bloomsbury Plaza among other high flying places where the big spenders in town love to frequent. This district competes with Maitama for living costs but is more of a commercial district. The few residents in this area make you understand with their lifestyles the difference between high class living and well …. you know the rest.

Garki 2

While Garki 2 doesn’t fall into the league of Wuse 2 or Maitama for high living costs it however does make for an expensive town - compared to other districts in Abuja. For instance Garki 2 has some of the most expensive supermarkets and shopping malls in Abuja, just in case you're dreaming of purchasing regular consumables. Rent in this part of the city is quite high and a 2 bedroom flat could go for between N1.5 million to N2.5 million per year depending on which part you find yourself in.

Gwarinpa

The so called largest housing Estate in West Africa, Gwarinpa is home to many upper middle class folks who want a decent alternative to Maitama or Wuse 2. Houses here are quite expensive just as social hang-outs will quickly leave a huge hole in your pocket if you decide to socialize and entertain family and friends.

Romance / 5 Ways To Catch A Typical Nigerian Chic! by Abujafood: 2:56pm On Sep 25, 2013
Take it from me these methods have worked before, but don't come running back if a chic slaps you (may be you didn't follow the instructions well). If you're a guy wanting a relationship check yourself and see if you have any of these if you don't time to up your game.

1) Make it big!

This means get yourself a career that pays you well. It doesn't matter whether it's in the corporate world or in the hustling world of the street, if you have the spending power you're a hit with the girls.

2) Make a name for yourself

The girls wouldn't turn down a chance to have a BF that's admired and well known, it makes them feel lucky and every girl likes being lucky.

3) Dress right and tight

If you have an athletic physique and a fine face it won't fly with most Naija girls if you dress like a hard core born again (no offence if you're one) Your high class, fashionable dressing plus natural looks will sell you any day.

4) The Magic Word

Girls are sensitive to words and they're often moved to act based on them and many Nigerian girls have theirs. For some it could be Cash, others compliments. If you say her smile is very cute in most cases she'll be moved to think about you. Tell her you want to try out a game and need a partner. If she asks what's the game tell her shopping. Once again the magic words in reverse order; shopping, cute smile, cash to name a few. There are many more be creative.

5) Make her to feel envied by her female folk

Most women want other women to envy them. Buy a Nigerian girl an expensive item other girls crave for just as a gift and nothing more (while you're chyking her) telling her it's not a bribe, 95% of the time she'll give you her number if you ask her for it. The rest falls in place with time.

Has any of these methods worked for me? Your guess is as good as mine!

Health / 5 Abuja Hospitals You Should Know About by Abujafood: 5:02pm On Sep 24, 2013
We don’t ever pray to fall sick but sickness does indeed visit unannounced sometimes whether we like it or not. Whenever it comes however there is the need to visit a reliable hospital that would at the very least offer relief and healing of some sort. Here in Abuja City we’ve taken time to list out 5 hospitals that stand out among others and you should know them just in case;

Abuja Clinics (Maitama)
This is by far the best private hospital in Abuja. It is well equipped to handle treatment of all kinds of medical services that most standard tertiary institutions in Nigeria can run. Its services are however very expensive hence it’s specifically meant for the upper class.

Federal Staff Hospital (Idu District)
This hospital which is government owned is one of the few hospitals in Abuja that provides high quality but affordable medicare. The hospital has 6 consulting rooms with space for 2 doctors at a time meaning at peak periods it could have 12 doctors to attend to patients’ needs that is besides having well equipped laboratories, a well stocked pharmacy and suffient number of wards for patients on admission.

Garki Hospital (Area 3)
This used to be the popular Garki General Hospital until it was privatized by the Federal Government. The hospital is well equipped although not as large as the previous two but it can compete in terms of having well trained staff that would look after your loved ones or yourself if you ever need medical attention.

Maitama General Hospital
Located along Aguiyi Ironsi way in Maitama, it is one of the few Government Hospitals that is above board in terms of offering reasonable medicare to the general public. The hospital does have challenges such as service delivery, overstretched facilities among others but that is expected of public hospitals.

National Hospital Abuja
The most popular hospital in Abuja and also the biggest although not the best. Many people have had course to complain about this hospital as being unreliable with uncourteous staff, poor service delivery and exhurbitant fees. But the hospital still remains the number one port of call for many ill and injured people in Abuja requiring medicare.

If you have medical needs from any hospital in Abuja and want to be well catered for you should know these 5 and make your pick on which one you’d rather use.

Career / 5 Ways Project Management Skills Can Boost Your Career In Nigeria by Abujafood: 7:30pm On Sep 23, 2013
www.nairaland.com/attachments/1322382_Project_Management_phases_png93188154e04707e191bad293e5b9dcc4

Many Nigerian professionals aren't aware that they could gain a lot of advantages by merely receiving project management skills. In case you're wondering what is project management - as the name implies managing a project from conception to execution. That simply means from the moment an idea for a project is born till the moment the idea eventually becomes a reality. All the steps involved in managing this falls under project management.

Project management is not only for engineering or management professionals, it cuts across all fields as there is project management in every thing we do be it building a house to starting a business or even planning a concert. That brings to mind the second question - what is a project?

A project is a collection of tasks. A task is an activity that is designed to achieve a definite objective. Without taking much more time here are 5 ways project management skills can boost your career.

1) Improve your productivity

With project management skills you can achieve better results and faster on your job making you a more desirable employee.

2) Boost your Chances for better Opportunities

If you want to cross over to another field or job what are your odds of scaling through? Well that depends on many factors but your chances of moving on to a more lucrative job is enhanced when you can handle projects effectively.

3) Earn More

Do you know project management certified professionals earn more money than those who don't have it? Check the labour market pay figures and find out for yourself.

4) Help develop Nigeria

In Nigeria we're in need of expertise, unfortunately most people who handle big projects in this country are expatriates as few Nigerians haver required skills to manage huge projects. What stops government from hiring you to handle a major project if you have the required skills?

5) Become more versatile

Due to the nature of project management people skilled in it tend to have an eye for the big picture. So they may not have the technical skills or knowledge for a project yet they can manage it efficiently.

Still at a loss on what to do to boost your career? You now know don't you?

Good luck!

Education / French Classes In Abuja: The Best School To Study And Learn In Abuja by Abujafood: 11:51am On Sep 23, 2013
When it comes to learning French in Abuja for those in search of world class French Classes there’s only one place to look for it and that’s at the French Government owned Institut Francais du Nigeria otherwise known as the French Cultural Center in Wuse 2.

What makes this place a great learning center is not just the fact that it’s the best place in the whole of Abuja to learn French but it’s also known for having an enabling environment for qualitative world class learning.

You’re in good hands when you enrol for any program at the french Cultural center and here are 7 great reasons:

World class E-learning Center
The French Cultural Center boasts of a world class e-learning center where students can access information including tutorials and online lessons via the world wide web to add to their regular instructions from experienced teachers. This offers a window of opportunity for people who are serious about acquiring world class French lessons in Abuja.

French Trained Tutors
All the teaching staff at the French Cultural Center are trained in France so they have deep knowledge about the language and they have been trained on how to adequately impart this knowledge with 21 st century compliant lectures and modes of instruction. So you have access to western based teaching and learning methods making you better equipped to learn from people who know the French language very well and who can impart the knowledge effectively.

Opportunity to Study Abroad
If you desire to study abroad in France you’d be required to have some level of mastery of French. But that aside you’ll need to be counselled and advised on courses and institutions of learning you can actually receive this service for free if you’re enrolled at the French Cultural Center plus information about scholarships and financial aid where they apply.

World Class French Curriculum
The classes at the French Cultural center are prescribed by the French government and are in line with global standards for language learning. So you can actually study at your own pace if you so wish once you have a copy of the syllabus knowing that you’re following an effective tool to aid your learning. The curriculum is also customized to suit either diplomatic or business usage so if you want to learn French because you’re a diplomat you can be guided and taught accordingly or if you do business in French speaking countries and want to speak or write well you’re not left out either.

Very Flexible and affordable Tuition
Surprisingly studying at the French Cultural Center is very affordable as the fees are inexpensive because they’re heavily subsidized by the French government because of their desire to make the language a globally accepted one. But in addition to that you can also pay in instalments either weekly, or monthly as you commence your course plus there are home lessons too for busy executives who may not have the time to attend regular classes.

Free access to the Library to the Public
The French Cultural Center has a well stocked library containing a rich array of French literature and it’s open to the general public for free. But you have to register first with a valid ID in order to use it.

Free Week French Movie Show
The French Cultural center also has a cine club on Thursdays by 7 pm where the general public can come and watch a French Movie sub-titled in English at no cost what so ever. The environment is quite exciting in the evenings especially if it falls in the European Film Festival week where there’s a movie showing every night.

Food / Top 5 Abuja Fast Food Restaurants To Know by Abujafood: 5:00pm On Sep 09, 2013
Abuja Eateries are popular among the young at heart especially singles in their 20s looking to hook up with dates or hang out with friends. If you are looking for Fast food restaurants in Abuja for whatever reasons we’ll suggest these 5 based on our knowledge of which ones stand out from the rest.

Southern Fried Chicken (Maitama, Garki, Wuse 2)

This is perhaps the most customer friendly and most attractive fast food restaurant in Abuja. We’ve seen many restaurants but this particular one is different from many in terms of the neat and cosy ambience. An outing at any of their 4 outlets in Abuja is a fantastic way to enjoy an outdoor experience in Abuja as their menu is also slightly richer than the average Abuja fast food restaurant. They have outlets on Gana Street in Maitama, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent and Libreville Street in Wuse 2 as well as Dunikofia street in Garki Area 11).

Kilimanjaro (Maitama, Ceddi Plaza and Nyanya)

This is another popular Abuja fast food restaurant which to our mind is also relatively customer friendly. Although they serve practically the same items you’ll find at most Abuja eateries they are slightly more expensive. The ambience is okay but could be a bit better. Their main branch is at the 911 mall in Maitama but also have outlets at ceddi plaza in central area as well as in Nyanya.

Drumstix (Asokoro, Wuse 2 and Garki 2)

This is Abuja’s most popular fast food restaurant judging by the volume of business they conduct plus the fact that they have become a household name among many Abuja residents. They have outlets in Asokoro, two in wuse 2 and one in Garki 2 district.

Chicken Capitol (Wuse Zone 3 by neighbourhood center)

Chicken Capitol located in zone 3 wuse district serves the best Sharwarma in Abuja at least as of 2012. But in addition to their great Sharwarma they have a posh ambience and for a fast food eatery of their size we think they are resourceful and efficient but they need to keep up with maintenance as some of their furniture are showing signs for immediate replacement.

Chicken Republic (Wuse 2 and by Berger Bus Stop)

Chicken Republic is a national fast food eatery brand that you’ll easily take note of when you’re traveling through the capitals of many states in Nigeria but in Abuja they’ve come of age as a strong restaurant brand. They offer quality meals at slightly average prices and we reckon that given a little more time they might open even more branches. Like all branches in other states chicken republic has a nice ambience and customer service is average.

Health / 5 Healthy Reasons You Should Do More Walking by Abujafood: 3:23pm On Sep 05, 2013
Believe it or not walking which we so often take for granted is a very effective exercise that serves many purposes. In case you’re contemplating adding some healthy habits for your general well being we recommend walking at least 30 minutes a day and here are some reasons to do so;

Walking helps eliminate useless body weight

Walking like many other exercises is can help in weight loss management. It is a painless and stressless way to eliminate excess body weight that does little for your body’s health. When next you’re thinking of outdoor weight loss exercise, try walking around your neighbourhood for a start.

Walking can help Fight Diabetes

By burning glucose the body is forced to remove excess sugar in the blood, you might not realize it but each time you commit to walking the body converts stored sugars into ‘fuels’ that helps support you that way ensuring your blood sugar level remains within safe limits.

Walking helps Prolong life

A study done in Honolulu of 8000 found that walking 2 miles a day – roughly 3 kilometers – can considerably prolong your life at least by 50%. Want to live long? You now know one little secret.

Improves brain power

The mind works faster and sharper with a regular habit of walking so says a study in Nature magazine done in 1999. The study which targeted elderly folks in the 60’s showed that 45 minutes daily walking regime improves memory and critical thinking capacity.

Walking is a Stress Releaser

The naturally stressful work life of the average Abuja resident can be put in check with walking as it offers the body a natural way to release stress. Are you having a bad day at work or is your spouse making life difficult for you? Take a walk.

Fashion / How African Are 'african Fabrics' - Ankara, Lace, Hollandais, George, Hi-target? by Abujafood: 7:39pm On Sep 02, 2013

'African prints', popularly called Ankara, have over the past few years, declared their presence from the local to the
national, regional and global scene. Wherever you see the ankara fabrics, the first thing that comes to mind is 'African prints'. But how much of it is authentically African? Last week I went to Wuse market in Abuja to sample three particular fabrics that have been making waves in Abuja, at least for the past 5 years - Dutch Wax or Hollandais, George, and French lace. These fabrics are well known as the primary choice of
women when sewing the traditional shirt and blouse/blouse and wrapper/buba and iro. However, their origins are entirelly foreign.

George: The earliest George came from the UK.

Above; older version of George which reigned in the 1970s and 1980s. Costs about N2,500 (asking).

Above, the latest type of George; the Indian George. Worn below as a skirt or wrapper, it's a favourite for many trendy women and young girls. The price ranges from N10,000 to N15,000 and above (asking). Could be higher or lower depending on your bargaining power.

Hollandais/Dutchwax/Vlisco and Hi-Target:

Just as the name goes, Hollandais is from Holland, Dutchwax is from the Netherlands. Their biggest market is in Africa and the fabrics have been embraced to represent various events both in the continent and in Nigeria. Below is the famous jumping horse (left) and the round stool (far right) popularized byVlisco (The Netherlands) in the 1980s. They are highly coveted today and due to their quality, they are sold between N8,000 - N15,000 and above asking. Thanks to Hi-target, a Chinese brand, you can get these prints at N2,000 to N2,500, asking. The pictures below are hi-target.

The Gele: The head piece (below).

Most of them come from Europe and Asia. Prices range from N1,000 and above.

French Lace: Needless to say, French Lace is from France.

With the booming business for the European and Asian fabrics in the country, little can be said of how their Nigerian counterparts are faring. I will not be in a haste to call ankara 'authentically African' at this time, as I cannot say for sure how many of them are woven and processed at our local looms. Also questions that beg for answers: how many Nigerians are involved in the labour force of manufacturing these fabrics? are we only consuming? what is happening to the Nigerian textile industry?

Celebrities / Abuja Spotlight Personality For August 2013: Taopheek Babayeju by Abujafood: 6:02pm On Aug 27, 2013
For many young people in Abuja, the road to success in the business world starts with you getting a big contract or a connection to a highly placed person in society. The so called Man know man syndrome where success or access to opportunities is seen as something that only happens when someone else in a privileged position opens the door and invites you to be part of their league.

Not so however for a young enterprising Nigerian Taopheek Babayeju the founder and CEO of several companies including Phone Clinic and iCentra and an entrepreneur who started doing business with little resources and who also believes in creating businesses that outlive their founders. He is one of those few individuals who make you realize that life offers equal opportunities to all – although some have them more equally.

Taopheek Babayeju as he puts it is “an artist locked up in the body of a physicist” he’s an excellent artist who draws and makes sculptures although he studied physics. He designs his own clothes by sketching his designs which he sends to designers to make his preferred designs for him, he also designs his own corporate logos, branding concepts etc.

This is besides the fact that he has a professional background as a project management consultant, training and equipping young Nigerian professionals with skills that will make them more employable and productive in addition to offering businesses in Abuja cost effective IT enterprise solutions through his company iCentra.

Call him dynamic, industrious or multi-faceted and you’ll be very correct as Taopheek is; an artist, a scientist, a serial entrepreneur, an inquisitive problem solver and an excellent organiser of men and resources - the brain behind the Project Management Conference (@PROMACON) in conjunction with the globally recognised Project Management Institute (PMI) and Creative Entrepreneurs Association of Nigeria .

The road to entrepreneurial success started for the young but ambitious Taopheek in 2000 when he came to Abuja to start a career in Telecomms industry where he was posted to serve as a trainee Telecomms engineer in the defunct MTEL from where he discovered he could actually make a difference in the lives of others – he has a penchant for reading product information and using such information to solve people’s problems.

Taopheek talks about retiring from his work at an early age - a thought that is rarely shared among Nigerian CEOs - by building structures around his business to create a living brand that can exist without him just like the household brands whose owners have passed on but still continue to thrive.

He got this mindset learning from his greatest mentor – his father – whose mistakes included not bringing on board others who could share his business vision, associated risks and most importantly succession.

With the lessons learnt and the future looking like his oyster Taopheek isn’t hesitating to seize opportunities whenever they present themselves as he always searching for new ways to solve problems that people are willing to pay money for. Incidentally he shared his little money making secret with us – it’s actually a money formula; look for a problem, find the solution to it and monetize the solution. It’s a formula that hasn’t let him down since he began making money in Abuja as far back as 2000.

Taopheek does have a life outside of his work which more or less isn’t very different from his work life. He spends his weekends creating solutions that could solve people’s problems although once in a while he hangs out with friends, loves to dance, listen to music, write and draw. He’s not a foodie but he loves his local Amala so much.

He was Educated at Christ School Ado-Ekiti where he had his secondary Education and Lagos State University where he studied Physics and has certifications in project management and telecomms engineering.

His advise to Abuja is “Opportunities are everywhere, start with what you have, there’s strength in what you have than in what you’re looking for and you can use what you have to get what you want” A fitting advise indeed considering that the young Taopheek, a graduate of physics once actually worked as a barber at a Friend’s aunt’s salon and took up a small corner space in a plaza on his way to setting up the phone clinic.

It was an honour having Taopheek as our spotlight personality for the month of August and we wish him more success in his pursuits.

netbrilliance: OP....You are missing up Spiritual Truths of God's Word with Men's Logical Reasoning......God's Ways are entirely different from Man's Ways.....your POV is rational but is God seeing it the same way...that is an entirely different thing.........Remember he Said in his word....JUDGE NOT

This is another line often times abused!

Touch not my anointed rather means inflict no harm (physical) on my anointed and do my prophet no harm. By the way only kings were anointed in the Bible not even priests and Jesus Christ is the last anointed of God.

I think Christ actually means the anointed one so calling yourself anointed means your calling yourself Christ. That must explain why Jesus said in the last days there shall be many false Christs (anointed men of God).

It's blasphemous to call your pastor anointed man of God that's like calling him a Christ and nobody is above criticism except God so is your pastor God?

Fanatical Christians please answer this question?

By the way I'm a Christian although liberal!
